Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome to this week's Caledon Oxbridge Deans' Q&A. This is an open meeting; |
15:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
all are welcome apart from those who intend to misbehave in a disruptive manner. |

Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Non-disruptive misbehavior is at your discretion. |

The bells. The Bells!! |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It wouldn't be hard to get me going Poe-etic, Gronk. :P |
15:02 |
|
Gronk Seriman smiles |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, what do you have for today? |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
The Advent Calendar is open, with new gifts daily through the 24th, and all gifts available till the 31st. |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
And this is the last Advent Calendar for a while. |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
I will not be doing one next year. |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
There are a few reasons for that. First, you need to know that it doesn't take 24 gifts, one a day, to make the Oxbridge calendar. It takes anywhere from 40-45. |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
It takes eight months of effort to collect those gifts, to talk to donors, to check things out, to make sure what is donated will work, will be General in nature, and so on. |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
And this year nearly half a dozen of the wonderful donors who have helped out immensely the last five years were unable to do it because of RL matters. |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
Job changes, moving, health issues. |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
So, I had to scramble to find replacements, or to make replacements, or to ask others to make replacements. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
This is the fifth year for an Advent Calendar at Oxbridge, of this type. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
The other reason has to do with the evolution of building in SL. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
More and more, things are being moved into mesh -- but fewer people know how to make mesh than make things with prims. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
And there are restrictions on things made with mesh, often as not, that do not work with the Calendar. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
For example -- the kind person who has made t-shirts each year looked everywhere for a mesh shirt that could be textured with the Oxbridge logo -- but the requirement for that shirt was that it only be distributed free to fewer than 50 people. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
We get that many a day. Many many more than that many. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
So, discrepancy in the way things are built, not enough builders, not so many donors as to make it easy, and you get an exhausting situation. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
I think my energy can be used more usefully in Oxbridge on something else next year. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
This does not mean that there will not be some kind of event or events to bring in people from around the grid. We've been discussing various kinds of building contests, for one thing. I'm open to thoughts of other kinds of events as well. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
But that is where it stands as of now. |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
So sorry to hear! |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
Thank you for donating to the Advent Calendar, for coming and getting gifts, and for being supportive. It all means a huge amount. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
to me, as well as to Oxbridge. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
And that's all from me. |
15:11 |
|
Phrynne looks back at Word |
15:11 |
RainyDayRecess |
Thank you Phrynne for working so hard for so many years on the Calendar ;) |
15:11 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes! Thank you. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you, Phrynne, for the report and for the 5 years of doing the Calendar |
15:11 |
|
Phrynne takes a small bow |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Andrea? |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What's between your antlers? |
15:12 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
We will be having our Christmas party fundraiser on the evening of the 21st. A little later than I wanted. But I don't think I will be ready for it by this coming sat. So it will have to be the Saturday after |
15:13 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Will be setting up a DJ and such tonight hopefully. |
15:14 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Caledonian Nights will be hosting DJ Patty Poppy on Thursday nights now at the blues Juke Joint, Tuesdays will continue as long as I can find a Dj for it. DJ Piper is still off line. |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I'll set out a box giver in just a min in front of the stage. it has the Christmas cards I made. Or you can look at notices in the COU groups, ISC, or CN nights |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
should be it for me. looks back at Wordsmith |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you, Andrea |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The last few days have been numbers work for me. The weekly and monthly visitor statistics are up to date at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/statistics/index.php |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've some other summary data behind me against the wall. [which I'll leave up for a while] |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The upper one is the weekly visitor count timeline, including the advent calendar upswing in the last week |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The big dips are data outages, not data (i.e. something killed the monitor script) |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The second graph is a record of the freebie touches from the first of November to the morning of the 7th. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Have the freebie touches gone up since the new freebie area was put out? |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The vertical axis is a log scale, to make the large differences in touches visible. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Definitely Carl I can answer that just from the increase of the emails of data to me. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the start of the advent calendar means groups of 5 emails about 4 times a day. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good to hear. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The accumulator can acquire data from the various freebies, and can't send it all in one email because of SL limits |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And much of what you see as items in the horizontal are the result of Carl's work on the freebies. |
15:25 |
RainyDayRecess |
Thank you Carl ;) |
15:25 |
RainyDayRecess |
Nice work |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have another question: How many people per day hit the Advent Calendar here? |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are also a few entries for his new info pylons, one ranking just under the advent entries. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'd have to extract that, but I can. Another Excel pivot table. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have to go back and check how I named those. I thought I gave each a unique name, but sometimes changes don't "stick" in SL if the asset server burps. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are several in that graph. One at 30 counts, next at 11 |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The advent columns will continue to grow, since people back collect prior days |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It would be interesting to know. When Phyrnne was talking about how hard it was to assemble the gifts, then I looked at that chart, it occurred to me if the traffic was high enough, it might be possible for next year (not that Phyrnne would be expected to do it!) to actually _sell_ space in our calendar to merchants who wanted to promote their products but could not do an advent calender on their own. |
15:30 |
Phrynne |
One of the requirements for the Calendar now is that it not advertise anyone's shop. That would be a big change. |
15:30 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Hi Diana. |
15:30 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Welcome |
15:30 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Aside from people seeing who created the item, I assume |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
I have had to remove obvious advertising from gifts in the past; not so much this year. |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
People can always look at an object's properties, find the name of the creator and look up that person. That's fine. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, it would. But this might be able to turn a time sink in to less of a time sink and a fund raiser for Oxbridge. I will want to get a total of the clicks through the end of the calender to see if a good business case could be made to sell it, but it looks promising so far. |
15:32 |
Gronk Seriman |
I would not object to a freebie being a promotion to the giver. As long as the giver made appropriate things for Oxbridge and Caledon. I jut\st opened up a can of worms, didn't I? |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. It was my idea, Gronk. My worms wiggling all over the place. |
15:32 |
|
Larky (larkylouz) releases a flock of robins in the Lecture Hall |
15:32 |
Phrynne |
Well, I wish you both well with it. |
15:33 |
|
Phrynne corrals worms and sends them back to Carl |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am just trying to think of a way we can afford to keep doing it from a time and cost perspective. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Carl, the count for day 6, was essentially one day of being out |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Thank you. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So a rough estimate of how many come in during a single day |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
There is a little slop-over, since I put gifts out the evening before the day. so as to not disappoint people getting there before I wake up. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It seems a pity of have to give it up, if a way can be found to do it that does not constitute a huge time sink for whoever is in charge of it, and Oxbridge can always use the money. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, you put day 6 out in the late afternoon before, and I collected data in the late morning. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Both average daily hits and cumulative hits are useful measures. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But a rough estimate |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
Oxbridge is listed on two Advent Calendar collective lists, which bring in people from all over |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
many of whom I've never seen before. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'll recap the financials that I got to Andrea last week. Last fundraiser brought in about 5k $L, leaving us about 13k below my nominal float, with stipend payments current. |
15:39 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Considering their costumes, you may prefer it that way! ;^) |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Our tier runs about 821 $L per day. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And open for general questions, comments, announcements, .... |
15:41 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
My Christmas house is open for visitors |
15:41 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I will post the LM later in a notice |
15:41 |
Agatha Macbeth |
:) |
15:41 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
cards are all over the lower floor |
15:41 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Still persisting with the Writers' Meeting |
15:41 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And now there is Soup's Readers' Meeting as well :-) |
15:42 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Mr Johnson is having his readers meeting on sat at 2 |
15:42 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
yes what he said... |
15:43 |
Diana B (glial) |
I would love to see more on opening SL up,are there more big events scheduled? I only got here by word of mouth, just luck to happen upon a resident and ask the right questions. |
15:43 |
ConKipcha |
Question about the Writers' Meeting, from a new player: when/where? :) |
15:43 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I'll give you a notecard |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Along those lines, I caught up on the archive of the sci-fi short-story discussions that we collaborate on with the community virtual library group. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/cvl_caledon/index.php |
15:43 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Diana, if you join the Scholar's group, you should get announcements of events and classes. I'll send you an invite. |
15:43 |
RainyDayRecess |
Welcome to the Q&A Diana ;) |
15:44 |
Diana B (glial) |
thanks. But, I was also thinking of driving new people here. |
15:45 |
Diana B (glial) |
I am doing a lecture in January on teaching in virtual worlds, I hope to drive the doctorate students here first to get their SL legs, |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I post the Deans' Q&As both to the Independent State of Caledon (ISC) group and to the Oxbridge' scholars group (COUG) |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Carl, I assume you are posting the General Q&A's? |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the transcripts for both the Deans' Q&As and the General Q&As are in the navigation of the Oxbridge home page |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/index.php |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I post announcements in COUG and ISC for the General Q&As |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Should I be posting them as events, too? |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You could, but reading the LL blogs, they are going to start charging for event postings, 10 $L for premium members, 50 $L for non-premium. |
15:50 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Sounds like the Janitor should go premium! |
15:50 |
Phrynne |
how... chintzy |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
Geez! |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That was put out here: https://community.secondlife.com/blogs/entry/3016-the-return-of-last-names-and-changes-to-marketplace-events-premium/ |
15:52 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) has no particular desire to pay for a last name that has to be selected from a list |
15:52 |
Diana B (glial) |
Can I post an advert in my education center? |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sure. It's your center. |
15:53 |
Diana B (glial) |
I think maybe make a resource kiosk..maybe a teleporter to the front steps?? |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You could also get a class schedule poster? |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We appreciate people alerting others to our presence and purpose. |
15:54 |
Diana B (glial) |
Well, I may need help with that. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I could do a version of my floating kiosk that subs in a link to the class schedule and a LM for Oxbridge? |
15:54 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Updateable one may be bit complex... |
15:54 |
Diana B (glial) |
But, that would be a nice add. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Teleporting is hubbed on the main parcel, so newbies end up in the arrival point in the entry building where the info posters start. |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, the schedule kiosks contact the server for the UUID of the current schedule inworld, and send requests to deliver notecards to those who touch a kiosk. |
15:57 |
Diana B (glial) |
I'll have to play around with these options. Perhaps will put my Oxbridge scholar cap back on. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can check my kiosk inventory and give you one a bit later. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They generally take an hour or 2 to come current. |
15:59 |
Diana B (glial) |
thanks all. I hope we can do some good work and keep Avatars engaged and interested |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
ty, Diana |
16:00 |
RainyDayRecess |
Thank you Diana for your efforts towards Oxbridge ;) |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any last quick questions, the clock chiming 4pm |
16:01 |
Diana B (glial) |
Oxbridge t-shirts??? |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And whether or not I look formal, I'm not. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
They are some of the gifts in the Advent Calendar; a box of previous ones is in the Railroad Station. |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
May have to make our own unrestricted mesh. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
This year's are not out in the boxes yet |
16:02 |
RainyDayRecess |
We might be able to do that together Word? maybe |
16:02 |
Diana B (glial) |
I want a real one...I would totally throw away my Stanford shirt. |
16:02 |
RainyDayRecess |
:D |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Might could, Rainy. (grins) |
16:03 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) has a Miscatonic University one.... somewhere.. |
16:04 |
|
Wordsmith Jarvinen Watches Gronk type. |
16:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In the early days of the internet, before everything was so formalized, someone managed to sneak miskatonic.edu into the DNS system. So it is a real domain for a fictional university |
16:05 |
Gronk Seriman |
Oxbridge so needs a fictional football team. So we can sell all the things. Doesn't even need to to differentiate between round football or pigskin football. |
16:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hmm... Just tried it on the web. It does not resolve now. Maybe it was caught out after decades |
16:05 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
There is lost of mentions of Necronomicon in the library records, with a note "missing"... |
16:05 |
|
Phrynne is looking toward the kitchen in RL |
16:05 |
Larky (larkylouz) |
Instead of football, we could have bowling for mushrooms.... |
16:06 |
Diana B (glial) |
fencing... more fitting the school. |
16:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Football? I think cricket might work better with Caleodn... |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is till in the DNS registry! |
16:06 |
Phrynne |
Except, no weapons on Oxbridge campus because it's a General region. |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I like that, Diana. That way people could get the point. |
16:06 |
Diana B (glial) |
fencing with large feathers... |
16:06 |
Phrynne |
so I teach En Garde at the Fencing Center in Caledon Oxbridge Village. |
16:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And, puns begin :-) |
16:07 |
Diana B (glial) |
hahaha |
16:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So yes, time to |
16:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
It's just so we can have the t-shirts, jersies, sweatshirts, etc. |
16:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think there is already an Oxbridge Fencing Team |
16:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
adjourn. |
16:07 |
RainyDayRecess |
Thank you Deans;) |
16:07 |
Phrynne |
thank you all for coming |
16:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
