Welcome Gronk and Ingo |
14:53 |
Ingo (tkb158) |
Greetings Word, Phrynne, Gronk, Elfbiter. |
14:53 |
Phrynne |
I just noticed, that's a jumping saddle, Gronk |
14:54 |
Phrynne |
for steeplechase or show jumping. Very nice! |
14:54 |
Phrynne |
hello Ingo! |
14:54 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you! I can give rides if one wished. |
14:54 |
Ingo (tkb158) |
Gronk took me for a ride once . . . just to see if we could do it. |
14:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
I can even hand the reins over to the rider if they want. |
14:56 |
Phrynne |
There's a group inworld somewhere that does dressage. I saw them at SL15B last year |
14:57 |
Phrynne |
I have no idea how that works, except that someone must have worked overtime on the animations |
14:58 |
Ingo (tkb158) |
Wish I could get some lion dance animations |
14:58 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
With or without blood? |
14:58 |
Phrynne |
I haven't seen good dance animations for any quadrupeds, so far |
14:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, Aria |

Welcome, Frigid. |

Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) nods hello to the good people of Caledon |
14:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
This horse and some of my dragons have dances built-in. But of course no-mod and no-transfer. |

Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
You're very welcome, Dean :) |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Welcome all to this week's Oxbridge Deans' Q&A. This is an open meeting; all are welcome except for those with the intent to misbehave in a disruptive manner. Non-disruptive misbehavior is up to you. |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Transcripts will be posted after the meeting. |

Welcome, Lovejoy. |

Lina? |
15:06 |
lovejoy2199 |
Hello Chancellor |
15:07 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
Is throwing peanuts at Mr. Elfbiter considered disruptive behavior? |
15:07 |
lovejoy2199 |
Greetings everyone |
15:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
:-) |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Depends if you can do so subtly . |
15:07 |
|
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) nods seriously |
15:07 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
Thank you :) |
15:07 |
Frigid Cryotank |
Might I suggest that peanuts are okay.. but she cleans up the shells? |
15:07 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
It will be done |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If she left the shells on, I guess she would be shelling Elfbiter. |
15:08 |
Frigid Cryotank |
Good one. |
15:08 |
Frigid Cryotank |
Need a peanut shooter. |
15:08 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
hehehe |
15:09 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) is allergic to all nuts but peanuts in RL |
15:09 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
(This technically was a disruptive intervention. Sorry) |
15:09 |
Brenda (brendaharden) |
Right |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Okay, I'm going to start off with various statistics, making it easier for Phrynne and Andrea (?) to comment. |
15:09 |
|
Brenda (brendaharden) smirks |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Above the sign about communication, I've place one showing the quarterly cash flow for Oxbridge last year. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The green column is the surplus or, if negative deficit per quarter. |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
Down is bad, up is good, I'm guessing. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We started off the year, pretty much at my nominal (desired) balance and incurred about a 12k $L deficit. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
Why are the third-quarter costs so much higher? |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
over the first two quarters. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
More classes actually taught. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
ok |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The tier is 74,750 per quarter. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The third quarter was interesting. Toward the end of July, the deficit had increased to about 20k. |
15:15 |
Gronk Seriman |
And "tier" means rent for land. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. Money paid to Desmond Shang who then pays tier to Linden Lab. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The Instructor stipend is 250 $L per class, with something like a nominal 10 classes per week. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So an estimated 2500 per week in stipends. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So July looked gloomy, and then Andrea and team put on the August and September fund-raisers. |
15:18 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Yay |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, the 3rd quarter surplus not only canceled the deficit but brought us into a surplus. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Fourth quarter continued to build on that. After paying a couple of weeks of stipends in January, we're about at a surplus of 55k $L, which should ride us through the spring downturn. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's still the need to raise funds, despite RFL, but we are far from critical. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Questions on any of the above? |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hearing none, then onward |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
RFL is the monster of SL. Do they offer any kickbacks to donor groups? |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Another three graphs, now visible |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do get donations during the year from those highly involved with RFL |
15:26 |
Aria (testing10989283) |
Pardon me, what is RFL? |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The upper graph is the timeline of our visitors. The dip at the left isin't real -- data outage. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Relay for Life, Aria. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They have lots of events between April(?) and July and do a substantial push for donations. |
15:27 |
Aria (testing10989283) |
Thank you. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's a good cause, but my responsibility is to ensure that Oxbridge is financially stable. |
15:28 |
Aria (testing10989283) |
That makes sense, pardon the interruption. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not a problem. Happy to answer questions. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So in terms of visitors, you can see last year and this year the increase due to the Advent Calendar. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Even a little higher this year. |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The bottom two graphs are from touches to the 24 gift boxes. |
15:30 |
Phrynne |
That's more than 1800 people on the 24th, the last day of the Calendar. |
15:30 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Woot |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I think Phrynne asked me if I was getting data about the 10th and I checked and realized the data accumulator had crashed under the sudden onslaught. I changed some parameters to dump the data earlier (in terms of memory) and started getting 25 emails per day. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The total touches recorded between the 13th and 31st was 13,835. |
15:33 |
Gronk Seriman |
Wow! |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
On the lowest graph, the 15th box is low. That box had an earlier version of the monitoring script that developed a time convergence problem back in 2016 (worked before that). |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
I swapped the scripts in and out of boxes and apparently missed that one |
15:35 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Happens |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So I suspect that proper recording would have had it up by days 14 and 16. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We still got a lot of good data, even with the glitches. |
15:36 |
Phrynne |
The Calendar was announced and part of two public lists -- Teleport Hub and one other I can't recall offhand. The second one started a little late. |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
That may account for part of the jump part way through. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's it for me, and Phrynne's got the floor. |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
I have three items for today: |
15:37 |
|
Agatha Macbeth hangs on to the seat |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
First, after consultation with Tasha and Word, we are raising the age requirement for beginning tutors to a year inworld. You need to be in Second Life for a year before applying. We've had a lot of people who were younger apply in the past, and become tutors, but many walk away after a few months because they've become more interested in something that isn't at Oxbridge. |
15:38 |
Phrynne |
In some ways that's fine -- Oxbridge exists to help people find their own Second Lives -- but it leaves us shorthanded when people drift away like that. So we are raising the minimum time in the hope that applicants will come to us already with a wider and deeper appreciation of the rest of Second Life and an interest in sharing that with others. |
15:38 |
Phrynne |
Second, those of you on staff may have noticed that you've been given COU Staff Medallions. People put a lot of time and effort and energy into helping others here, and sometimes it's fun and sometimes it's not. You all deserve recognition for the work you do -- so here's a medal that I hope will remind you that what you do is valued, and valuable. As far as I'm concerned, you're all heroes, and I am grateful that you are here. |
15:38 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I have seen many new tutors just vanish. |
15:39 |
Agatha Macbeth |
And some deans too |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(looks at his photo and is reassured that it's not fading away). |
15:39 |
Agatha Macbeth |
:P |
15:39 |
Phrynne |
It's a lot of work to learn about SL; it helps to have people who already know quite a bit. |
15:40 |
Phrynne |
And that's part of why there's a COU Staff Medallion in the COU notices today. |
15:40 |
Phrynne |
What you do is appreciated. It matters, and not just to me. |
15:40 |
|
Agatha Macbeth applauds |
15:40 |
|
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) claps warmly |
15:41 |
Phrynne |
Third, I'd like to take a moment to honor someone who stands out as a tutor, who has been here nearly every day for years, |
15:41 |
|
Gronk Seriman smiles |
15:41 |
Phrynne |
He has helped countless thousands of people find their feet as newcomers, and helped returnees and people with questions find answers. |
15:41 |
Phrynne |
For all of this, and for dancing the Time Warp better than anyone, thank you, Mr. Elfbiter. |
15:41 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |

15:41 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Haha |
15:41 |

Gronk Seriman applauds |
15:42 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
And the man can take a peanut! |

Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you, Elfbiter. Well earned. |
15:42 |

Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) claps loudly |
15:42 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
"Your feet? They are just sunk to the pavement" |
15:42 |
Lina Lyndon (ladylyndon) |
hehe |
15:42 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
"Hm. Wrong footwear alphas. Contact the creators" |
15:42 |
Phrynne |
I've just sent Mr. Elfbiter a medallion of his own, one of a kind, just as he is. Thank you for being at Oxbridge. |
15:43 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Medallion man! |
15:43 |
Gronk Seriman |

Those show that our normal age split with high values for both the newest and older avatars shifts somewhat more to the older ones during the advent calendar. |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
People like peanut here. Overripe fruit, not so much. |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Unless the fruit is hachiya persimmons, which are too astringent to eat before they are quite soft. |
