Welcome all. I'm going to wait another couple of minutes for Andrea, who is inworld. |

15:02 |

Of course. |

Kara2016 |
Your welcome, Wordsmith. |
15:02 |

And she's in the room |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome to this week's Oxbridge Deans' Q&A. This is an open meeting. All are welcome unless an individual insists on proving personally otherwise. Transcripts of the meetings are posted. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna/qna_index.php |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We start out with reports from the deans. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne (dean of commons), I'm sure you have things today. ;) |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
It's winter! We have snow and an ice rink! And decorations! And the Advent Calendar! |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
YAY!! |
15:06 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
Yay |
15:06 |
Kara2016 |
fantastic. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
I am very very pleased at how well the Calendar is doing -- Oxbridge made it onto three Advent Calendar lists, including one that provides people with a HUD to get them here. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
We have a lot of visitors and the vast majority are polite, kind, friendly and enjoy their stay. |
15:06 |
Kara2016 |
cool |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
Very nice |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
Some have never been here before and ask about classes. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Say a bit of how the calendar works, Phrynne. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
Every day from Dec. 1-24, a new box is put into the stained-glass gazebo -- the trail of luminaria lights takes people from where they land in the entry to the gazebo. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
Touch the box, and you get what's in it. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
And unlike other Advent Calendar locations, once the boxes are there, they are available until Dec. 31. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
If someone starts visiting the Calendar late, they will still be able to get all the gifts. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
The gifts were made especially for the Calendar each year, by a group of generous and kind people. Since I am not running it this year, I have no idea who they are. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
But I would like to say that Agatha Macbeth is doing a wonderful job of running it all. |
15:09 |
RainyDayRecess |
Is she here? |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
Not in the room. |
15:10 |
RainyDayRecess |
That was a lot of work |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
And not online at the moment. |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, if people backtrack along the luminaria to just outside the entry building, there's a teleport to the sandbox where they can rez things.. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
Yes. Work on this started in April or May with brainstorming and contacting creative people as potential donors |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any decor changes? |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
And then it progressed from there. I want to mention, also, that with the possible exception of wrapping paper or boxes, there are no repeats in terms of gifts. |
15:11 |
Gronk Seriman |
I hate to bring it up, but I was in the gazebo just a bit ago. I could find no boxes there. Nor could the few people there. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
Gronk, Oxbridge has lag but the boxes are there. From here I could see you walking on them. |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
I thought I was stepping on them. But I couldn't see them. I'll try again later. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
We do have pockets of lag going on, and all I can suggest is shut down other programs running on your computer while you're inworld -- such as browsers. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
That helps a lot. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
We will have some holiday decorated trees when Andrea and I get together on that. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I just had a confirmation that 1, 2, and 3 are down there in place (Thanks Star) |
15:13 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
nods |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
Last year I designed a 24-point star floor for the gazebo, for the Calendar. Ultimately there should be a place for each of the boxes there. |

Welleth |
i have one question..... who is actually in charge of Oxbridge? Who is the main supreme leader? Is it one person or is it a group of people |
15:15 |
Welleth |
who owns the place? |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oxbridge is run by the several deans, in effect a board of directors. |
15:16 |
Welleth |
thank you for your answer, are you one of them? |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The land is rented from Desmond Shang, Governor of Caledon. |
15:16 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
*Holds up hand* |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As Chancellor (dean of education, acting dean of scripting) I'm the outside spokesperson -- effectively chair of the board. |
15:18 |
Welleth |
I really appreciate how accurate and fast are the answers of my questions. you guys are awesome |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
ty, Welleth. |
15:18 |
Welleth |
i am a new guy in SL |
15:18 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
Question unrelated to Welleths. But is there a place to rent here, aimed at tinies and Dinkies please? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
While I sometimes have the last word on policy, I don't do that without discussion with other deans and advisers or without considering prior policy. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, Oxbridge is essentially owned by senior faculty and run most times on consensus. |
15:21 |
Welleth |
does Oxbridge make any profit or do you have to put there your own money to keep it going? |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Here's what appears to be a current admin list. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/admin.php |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I think the deans make donations as well as many others. We basically have been able to break even quarter to quarter from the total of donations, with some variance. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
James, As I recall Caledon Tanglewood had a tinies village. Phrynne may be able to say more. |
15:26 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
Thank you Chancellor Wordsmith |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Andrea, Have anything for this week? |
15:26 |
Phrynne |
It has had a Tinies village in the northwest of the region for a long time, though I have no idea how much use is made of it by local Tinies. |
15:26 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
Thank you Dean Phrynne |

one technical question ....:) if I use in this chat Fword, Bword or Nword will it be censored in your website? (don´t worry I am not going to do it) :) |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Star comments to me that it is used a "tiny bit" (which seems appropriate). |
15:27 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I've been offline since Wednesday night. RL sickness I'm afraid. From the one calender I looked at. The 16th should be available for a winter /Christmas fundraiser. |
15:28 |
|
Soup Jonson boos the Chancellor's pun with a big smile |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hate speech will get censored. I'm not inclined to censor expletives apart from that unless the become a rant or griefing. |
15:29 |
Phrynne |
Hate speech, however, may result in you being removed from this place. |
15:29 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
outside of that. I don't have a lot on the table. Rainy is nearing completion of the pin for the new 1000l membership level of the patron program. |
15:30 |

and this sim is rated General, so there may be children around as well |
15:30 |

The decorations are gorgeous thus far |
15:31 |

Sorry Andrea, get some good rest ;( |
15:31 |

I have a lot of land in the village, those are my concerns. Phrynne handles the COU itself |

15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And everyone do thank Phrynne and Andrea for decorating Oxbridge and its environs, respectively. It makes it feel a lot more like community. |
15:32 |

I also want to mention that Jorge Serapis has helped me find garlands when I couldn't find what I wanted. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's okay Welleth. Your questions were to the point without rambling. |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
so, many thanks to Jorge for his research and help. |
15:34 |
Sandie Harbour |
Jorge is a wonderful man |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And I hope Jorge is also getting to a point where he can continue with the tutorial translations. |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
Stereo Nacht is continuing to work at translating the tutorial into French; I have seen her in the buildings. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Great! |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've mostly been working on other data analysis this week, but one side effect of that is I have the Q&A RSS feed current again with summaries. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna/qna_rss.xml |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Firefox does a good job in displaying that formatted; Chrome shows it unformatted. Dedicated RSS readers will show it formated. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So another way to keep up on the transcripts. |
15:38 |
Sandie Harbour |
raises hand |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Okay. Open for general questions. |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sandie? |
15:40 |
Sandie Harbour |
I just opened your RSS in Chrome. It says it's looking for a style sheet. perhaps that's why it's not formatted |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's because chrome doesn't recognize RSS as anything apart from XML. |
15:40 |
Sandie Harbour |
I see |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Whereas Firefox does along with RSS readers. |

15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, we have earlier time-slots and I'd be happy to place classes in them. I just need some instructors who can manage the times to propose classes to me. Basically those who know the material, can communicate, and understand that the classes are for the benefit of the students. |
15:45 |
ツ נαмєş ツ (jamesfannon) |
Thank you very much. There are many classes I have missed and would like to attend |

Is it possible to start up the dorms so people like me can rent and stay here? |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not anymore, since Oxbridge is now a homestead sim (20 person limit; 1/4 the prims of a full sim) |
15:56 |
Soup Jonson |
Whom does one contact to rent on Caledon |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, you were keeping track of availability? |
15:57 |
Phrynne |
I have not checked which regions have parcels open in the past week -- things change quickly -- but Mari Moonbeam would know, and might be able to help you with rental as well, in Des's absence. |

15:59 |
яσdяιgυєz (sinnerkillz) |
Thank you |
15:59 |
Phrynne |
The best suggestion I can make is to wander around Caledon, see what areas you like and what size of parcel suits you, before talking to anyone. |
16:00 |
Soup Jonson |
okay |
16:00 |
Phrynne |
That way, you will already have a sense of what will work for you personally. |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And there are meters for every parcel. If they say occupied they are. If the don't say occupied, check with one of the above. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
Sometimes the meters look like streetlights, but in a few regions they look like rocks. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
So if you don't see one, look for the other. |
16:02 |
RainyDayRecess |
Great point Phrynne |
16:02 |
Soup Jonson |
I will do my best to do this searching |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They generally have a clear parcel number on them |
16:02 |
Phrynne |
It also helps a lot to go to the World drop-down menu and turn on Show Property Lines. |
16:03 |
Phrynne |
That makes it a lot easier to see how large a parcel really is. |
16:03 |
Phrynne |
especially if the shape is slightly irregular |
16:04 |
RainyDayRecess |
Also, some parcels look occupied but are very late on paying tier, so check the days left |
16:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And parcel boundaries are always on coordinates that are multiples of 4. |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
