Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Tis time to welcome you all to this week's Oxbridge Deans' Q&A |
15:03 |
|
Phrynne waves to every one who has just come in |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This is an open meeting, all are welcome to attend. |

Agatha Macbeth throws Phrynne a carrot |
15:04 |
Eva Gaelle (jucastt) |
Thanks, Wordsmith! |
15:04 |

Phrynne puts carrot aside for dinner |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We cover any reports first and then open it up to questions unrelated to the reports. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, anything to comment on or report? |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
For a while I've been working (very slowly) on making a new wishing well for Oxbridge. For this one, if 1L or anything more than that is donated, it repays the donor with a notecard with a quotation on it from arts, literature, history and so on. |
15:06 |
star (astarynite) |
that is nice |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
It is slow work -- you cannot imagine how many quotes I am discarding because they are racist, biased, or otherwise unsuited to Oxbridge. |
15:06 |
DorisE1 |
Good. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Does it get to randomly whoosh out a stream of water? |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
I have about a hundred. I want to have several hundred, or as many as a notecard will hold, when I put it together -- that will also help keep people from getting the same thing twice, even though the quotes are chosen randomly |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
No stream of water that I know of. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
I have a mesh well, and I have some scripts that I have not worked on yet or looked at or tested. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
I'll keep you all up to date as I continue to work on it |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
More seriously, search the internet archive for compilations of quotes. They have a sizable collection of public domain texts. |
15:08 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Or read peoples' profiles ;-) |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
I'll look there also. It would be good to have more historical quotes from women; if you look at Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, you'd think no women lived in entire centuries. |
15:09 |
DorisE1 |
I have been having real bad issues. |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Doris, we're still on reports from the deans and that isn't directly related. We'll open to general questions in a bit. |
15:10 |
DorisE1 |
Ok |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
Profiles are not a bad idea, but they often don't say where the quote is from -- Ideally, I would want the work and the author, such as "EArly to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." -- Poor Richard's Almanac, Benjamin Franklin |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Scripts I can provide as needed Phrynne. |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
So many quotes have been requoted later that I am trying to find the earlies version. |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
I have a script that Taff Nouvelle kindly made a while back, but I haven't looked at it y et. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
And that's all I have. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Proto-Indo-European quotes. |

15:12 |
Phrynne |
Alia jacta est.- The die is cast - The Civil Wars, Julius Caesar |
15:13 |
DorisE1 |
I have a hard time understanding the scripts. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
For foreign-language quotes, I am looking for more recent translations whenever possibel. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Forget the exact Latin, but "who will guard us from the guardians". |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
*possible. |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
Give me an hour and I may be able to remember that |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Most of my week went to the yearly tribute of time to the government(s) tax bureaus, but started a script for the monitoring of general avatars using Oxbridge. I also have managed to be able to view who's on the Oxbridge sim even when I'm offworld. |
15:16 |
star (astarynite) |
neat |
15:17 |
Kara2016 |
fantastic. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This next week, I plan on putting out a general call to the faculty group to see if I can pull in more instructors with detailed skills in both SL and communication plus ability to organize and present. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We are still short on a Dean of Development (funding, not avatar physics), and a Dean of Engines (scripting), plus an editor for a Wordpress blog. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Pretty much summarizes my week (I don't have to winterize until next fall). |
15:20 |
DorisE1 |
What is a blog? |
15:20 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Agatha Macbeth gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A blog is a place for writing articles on the web. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Agatha, did you have anything on the event Calendar (or otherwise)? |
15:21 |
DorisE1 |
Do you mean like on facebook? |
15:22 |
Phrynne |
Or Advent Calendar :) |
15:22 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Event calendar? |
15:22 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Eva Gaelle (jucastt) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, advent. |
15:22 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Ah |
15:22 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Just in the opening throes so to speak... |
15:23 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Deciding on a theme and such |
15:23 |
Agatha Macbeth |
(Or trying to) |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, for others, Agatha will be coordinating donations for the 2017 Advent calendar. |
15:24 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Only seven months to go :p |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's time. Not implying pressure, Natural Red. ;) |
15:24 |
star (astarynite) |
YAY Agatha |
15:24 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Danke schön :) |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Bitte. |
15:25 |
Agatha Macbeth |
No pressure then |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
or Eben (I'm rusty -- got left out in the rain too many times) |
15:25 |
|
Phrynne hands Word an umbrella |
15:25 |
|
Agatha Macbeth oils you |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Okay, open to questions. |
15:26 |
DorisE1 |
I have a question. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ask. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Doris? |
15:28 |
DorisE1 |
Hoow can I get my voice to work in secondlife here because in one group we are supposed to use voice. My voice does not even work? |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You first have to be on a parcel with voice enabled. If you look around and see white dots near peoples' heads, that's an indication that voice is enable. |
15:30 |
Kara2016 |
Do you have a microphone for your computer, Doris? |
15:30 |
Agatha Macbeth |
I don't see a dot over Doris |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You then have to work between SL and your computer that they are using the same device. |
15:31 |
DorisE1 |
Firestorm 5.0.1.52150. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Under preferences and the sound & media (or the equivalent in Firestorm), the should be a button labeled Input/Output devices. |
15:32 |
lovejoy2199 |
Preferences-Sound & Media-Voice Chat |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That allows you to select individual devices detected on your computer or system default. |
15:33 |
star (astarynite) |
now it is not |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's also a selection for if voice chat is enabled. (up with other volume controls) |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
On the other side, if (in windows) you right click on a speaker icon on the task bar, you can select the devices the system believes it is using. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
My experience is that sometimes you have to disable a competing device (that's a right click option). |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But the system input/output and SL have to agree that you are using the same devices. |
15:36 |
DorisE1 |
Where is the task bar? |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Also when you log in, sometimes SL will post a notification that it can't start the voice program, which is a separate program. If that happens, relog. |
15:37 |
|
star (astarynite) traises her hand |
15:37 |
star (astarynite) |
raises too |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The task bar is at the bottom of the screen. On the right had side are a number of system tasks. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Aye, star? |
15:38 |
star (astarynite) |
I'm sorry I thought there was a break there in the conversation |
15:38 |
star (astarynite) |
I wanted to bring up my MAZE |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I don't have anymore on the maze of getting sound to work, so go on to your maze. :) |
15:39 |
star (astarynite) |
ok |
15:39 |
star (astarynite) |
thanks Word |
15:40 |
star (astarynite) |
I have build a maze in Caledon II, it is almost 64x64 and considered hard, I am also building an easier one and an impossible one, they will be on different levels |
15:40 |
star (astarynite) |
any and all donations will go to the Relay for Life |
15:40 |

she is doing a great work. |
15:40 |
star (astarynite) |
there are lots of prizes at the entrance, dead ends, and the exit |
15:40 |

Can you give us the LM for it? |

If you stop to read, it may take a long time. |
15:42 |
star (astarynite) |
yes |
15:42 |
star (astarynite) |
the maze is made out of book shelves |
15:42 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Amazing |

15:42 |
star (astarynite) |
it is called the Carpe Librium Library Maze |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There may be wall to understanding as well as physical walls. |
15:43 |

star (astarynite) grins |
15:43 |
star (astarynite) |
please visit and tell others |
15:43 |
Phrynne |
but if you seize the books, won't the maze fal apart? |
15:43 |
star (astarynite) |
lol |
15:43 |
star (astarynite) |
hopefully not |
15:43 |
star (astarynite) |
there are books to be had at the entrance and other books inside which are cool |
15:43 |

15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As and added aid and a response that SL default camera positions can be non-optimal particularly in tight places. I'll toss in this from my pack-rat tendencies. http://sl.governormarley.com/?p=483 |

thanks |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Also, if you have camera constraints turned off, you may want them back on. Drifting through walls can make keeping your bearing a bit tough. |
15:50 |
star (astarynite) |
it will drift most likely when you turn the corners |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions, tutor comments, announcements? |
15:51 |
Gronk Seriman |
Would using Mouselook help? |
15:51 |
star (astarynite) |
I do not use mouselook, I do not know |
15:51 |
star (astarynite) |
you want as wide a view as possible for when there are different paths in the maze |
15:52 |
star (astarynite) |
you have choices1 |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm not sure either. |
15:53 |
star (astarynite) |
give it a shot Grink and let me know, I can put some tips on a board |
15:53 |
Gronk Seriman |
Allrightie. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I did notice an SL announcement that, for entering sims, LL is going to give an extra 10% avatar allotment to premium members. |
15:53 |
star (astarynite) |
thanks |
15:55 |
star (astarynite) |
more avatars per sim? |

15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
Allotment for what? Avatar rendering ddifficulty? |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Entering the sim. Even full sims can become full. |
15:57 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah. So I just read. |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That statement would give a natural language processing program "heartburn". |
15:57 |
Phrynne |
perhaps we need unnatural language processing |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perhaps. ;) |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
With that, it seems time to adjourn. |
15:58 |
Phrynne |
Thank you all for coming |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all for coming and participating. |
15:59 |

Thank you Phrynne and Word |
15:59 |
Eva Gaelle (jucastt) |
thank you! Have a good night |
15:59 |

Oh, one addendum, Orange Planer's likely first class is on SL communication, including voice. |
15:59 |

I crashed. |
