15:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome to our weekly Q&A |
15:01 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
LOL - oh, they're so bad that I would never ask good money for them! |
15:02 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Mr. Elfbiter, there is an awesome Finnish woman on one of the British talent shows. Saara? I enjoyed listening to her last night. |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Reports or absence of them first, and then we take general questions. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Our general areas of responsibilities are given at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/admin.php although I realize a couple of changes are due. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any word from Brace, Carl? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
BTW, I'm having financial troubles in RL, not SL. I have L$ because I have a year long prepaid membership to SL and get the old 500L a week stipend. So that's why I was able to dump a 2500 monthly contribution into the coin just now. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I hope that improves for you, on the RL side. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't think Brace is coming back, I'm sorry to say. I've been unable to find her. She has not responded to any of the Oxbridge emails she was copied on. I can't get her on Skype, and she has not replied on twitter. I know her RL blog, and from reading it, I believe she was very upset at the election results, too. |
15:05 |
RainyDayRecess |
:( |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I could press a bit further, but I don't think that would be appropriate. |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
She's so fun though |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Could we get together and send her a RL appreciation gift. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't have a RL address for her. |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
Oooooo, great idea |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At least it sounds like she is alive in RL. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She is. |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
that's good to hear. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
That's good. I was worried. |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. |
15:07 |
|
Gronk Seriman sighs in relief. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I check her blog and twitter. I can't tell anyone what those are, because they were told to me in confidence. |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you, Carl. |
15:07 |
Holly Gaavin (hollydeni) |
tell her we love her |
15:08 |
RainyDayRecess |
Yes, please let her know we miss her very much :) |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I might be able to use the various facts I know about her to find her RL address, but I think any gift sent over would be perceived as "creepy-how-did-you-find-me" rather than "we love you" |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I'm sure it eases your heart to have a way of knowing she's alive. |
15:08 |
RainyDayRecess |
Right |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It does. |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Ah, okay. Well, perhaps when she's ready, she'll show up one day. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'd rather not try to find someone's RL info anyway. It is kind of creepy, even with the best of intentions. |
15:09 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Thanks for for Bracies... er... mercies... |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If she comes back, it will be in her own time. Sounds like she has other things to manage for now. |
15:09 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, Wordsmith |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But it's a relief to know that if she was tossed under the bus, it was figuratively and not literally. |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks, Carl. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, what have ye? |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
We have an Advent Calendar that is a success -- with a lot of good comments on the gifts. |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, they're awesome! |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
Lots of new visitors, and many returnees |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I got the first eight so far. They are very cool. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
More good ones to come. |
15:12 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Excellent work Ms Phrynne |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can we send out an announcement of the advent calendar to the ISC group? |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
I sent one on Dec. 1, but feel free to send another. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I did get one that some weren't aware that a set of gift boxes was one of the gifts. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
one comment. |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
I notified Caledon, Winterfell, Mieville, Babbage, and every other connection I have |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
Yes, that was a bit confusing for some. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
In the past we have put out wrapping paper -- textures -- for people to wrap their gifts in, but this time it was boxes. |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
And in connection with the Calendar, I have a job opening: Assistant Dean for Special Projects. I am looking for someone to run the Calendar next y ear. |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
I'm not going anywhere -- but it is a lot of work, and I have had to put other work aside to do it. |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
It would be very helpful to have someone to help out with the organizational matters. |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
Think about it, please. This doesn't need to happen now -- any time before April would be good. |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
And it has nothing to do with this year -- we are set for this year. :) |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
That's all I have. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks, Phrynne. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
WE are still down several positions, as well. Dean of Engines (scripter extraordinaire), possibly Dean of Development (fundraising). What am I forgetting. We also need someone who loves doing simple research and data entry. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We do need a new Dean of Development, I guess. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Aww that reminds me. With Brace taking over Development, I was transfering sponsor ships to her. With that not happening, I'll be contacting past sponsors and trying to bring everything there up to date. |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Carl, if Brace comes back, and wants to work with us, I know we can find a place for her. Dean of Entertainment, if nothing else! |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
These are sponsors with advertising on the ad boards. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. That will work. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There other thing I have for the week, is that I have the new translator account set up and have verified that I can get a token (good for 10 minutes and needed to request a translation). There's some minor coding differences I still need to do, but I'll likely be shifting to Microsoft's new portal later this week. |
15:23 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Best of luck |
15:23 |
Phrynne |
How will this affect those of us using the translators? |
15:23 |
Phrynne |
Will we have to switch to a different HUD? |
15:24 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Wordsmith, what do you mean about a token? 10 minutes for tech support? |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not for the change of portals. They may be a new version with added languages if needed. MS is switching to translation using deep neural networks and has added Australo-Pacific languages to their set. I've generally waited until I see something live in SL to add it. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It will be interesting to see if we get better translations for some languages. |
15:27 |
|
Gronk Seriman They are having to compete with Google. |
15:27 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) has his doubts as far as certain languages are concerned |
15:27 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I discovered recently that even Spanish and Portuguese are pretty inaccurate. Although people do seem to understand me. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I don't think they currently handle slang well. The current portal has used statistical techniques, but apparently that's not state of the art anymore. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have noticed problems with Google when I translate text from the web. Machine translation has a long way to go. I hope Microsoft's new approach helps. |
15:30 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) wonders if they have stopped translating "helsinki" as "London" |
15:31 |
RainyDayRecess |
:D |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Something to try, Elf (after the changeover). |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What I'm talking about is discussed here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/translator/translatorapi.aspx |
15:32 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
The last time I checked, the translator still ranslated "oxbridge" as "kirsikkapuu" ("cherry tree") or "laitosten" (of the institutions") |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I like the second one. |
15:32 |
Phrynne |
That's poetic |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
Too bad we can't combine them: Cherry Tree of the Institutions |
15:34 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
"laitosten" is plural genetive of "laitos", meaning certain kind of organizations, like hospitals. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That might fit, if they are rude enough to get sent to the sharks. |
15:37 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) goes all politically incorrect and opines that some days it feels like a looney bin here. |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
Some of the sharks have lasers now |
15:37 |
RainyDayRecess |
:D |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I think we can open to questions, at this point. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and announcements. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Elfbiter? |
15:39 |
Jackson Drechsler |
The Planetarium is open in Caledon Southend |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Still hosting the Writers' Meeting. Anybody want a writing prompt? |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Have a link? |
15:40 |
Jackson Drechsler |
It's in my picks, I have too much lag to pass them out |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Notecard for prompt. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions? |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Caledon SouthEnd (115,189,28) |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This is the SL map link for the planetarium Caledon SouthEnd (115,189,28) |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
That looks like the link to the planetarium |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Great (on the planetarium). |
15:43 |
Jackson Drechsler |
Thanks |
15:44 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
sounds like a very interesting project, Mr. Drechsler |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've heard something, that sounded like more of the CATs might be running, that's unconfirmed. Still, watch the Caledon skies. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have seen one. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't know if it was a test or not. |
15:44 |
Phrynne |
I have seen one turning near SSC |
15:44 |
DorisE1 |
I never saw it before. |
15:44 |
Jackson Drechsler |
I've ridden two so far |
15:45 |
RainyDayRecess |
There's a few running I believe |
15:45 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I heard someone on ISC say that they are bringing one online at a time. There has been a fair amount of talk about them |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk Then we have some confirmation. |
15:45 |
Gronk Seriman |
I saw one tonight, sitting in the Plaza, over the Hall of Caledon. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A phantom escapee? |
15:46 |
DorisE1 |
DANG IT I AM HAVING VIEWING ISSUES!!!! |
15:46 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Okay, Doris, let's talk about this in IM. Yelling isn't the way to go. |
15:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
It seemed to know where it was going. Made a manoever. |
15:47 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Not the small test airship? |
15:47 |
DorisE1 |
WELL I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THESE ISSUES. |
15:48 |
Holly Gaavin (hollydeni) |
I saw one fly over our house! |
15:48 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
doris, if you yell again, I'm going to send you out of the meeting. Please ask your question calmly |
15:48 |
Phrynne |
I've also seen them flying while I was in the Plaza. |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
No, it was a CATS. With the cavorite exhaust and everything. |
15:48 |
Phrynne |
It was the white CAT airship, not the gold ones. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Wow! |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Maybe they've updated the route. |
15:49 |
Holly Gaavin (hollydeni) |
ours was gold |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Beautiful ships. |
15:49 |
DorisE1 |
Wordsmith are you the one in charge her? |
15:50 |
DorisE1 |
oops here |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
I saw it OVER the Hall of Caledon. I didn't chase it to see where it really was. |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I am the one running the meeting. |
15:51 |
DorisE1 |
Well how come I am having one issue right after another? |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything else (not of an individual hardware nature)? |
15:51 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Not our fault |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Try updating your graphics card driver. |
15:51 |
DorisE1 |
Well it is not my fault either. |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also try clearing your SL client cache |
15:51 |
DorisE1 |
It is updated. |
15:52 |
DorisE1 |
I did do that. |
15:52 |
RainyDayRecess |
there is a lot of lag right now :( |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Then try downloading a new version of whatever SL client you are using. |
15:53 |
DorisE1 |
If I take pictures or dance I crash everytime. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, check your Graphics settings to make sure they are not turned up too high for your computer an graphics card. |
15:53 |
RainyDayRecess |
(Make sure 'Freeze Frame is unchecked) |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Reducing draw distance and maximum number of avatars rendered can help with stuff like that. |
15:54 |
Gronk Seriman |
Doris, are you using only one viewer? I suggest trying a second viewer. |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sounds like we can adjourn the general meeting. |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all for coming. |
15:54 |
RainyDayRecess |
Thank you Deans :) |
15:54 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, DEans! |
15:54 |
DorisE1 |
I only have one viewer. |
15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
I suggest trying the Firestorm viewer. |
15:56 |
Gronk Seriman |
I prefer it. |
15:56 |
Holly Gaavin (hollydeni) |
buy a new computer |
15:56 |
RainyDayRecess |
:D |
15:56 |
Phrynne |
Thank you, everyone |
15:56 |
Gronk Seriman |
That might help, too! |
