Carl Metropolitan |
It is three pm SLT, and I'd like to Welcome you to Q&A with the Deans. This is a session where the Oxbridge staff reports on anything that they need to tell everyone about and you all ask questions about Oxbridge, Caledon, and Second Life in general... |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm going to start with Phyrnne, since we are short on Deans today, the first part should go quickly :) |
15:02 |
Phrynne |
I have one announcement, which probably doesn't apply to anyone here, but since the transcript goes on line and can be ready by anyone, I'll say it: |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
If you are making a gift for the Oxbridge Advent Calendar, it is due to me by November 1 unless you have already spoken to me about getting a week more. If you need more time, or won't be able to do it, please let me know because I will have to find something else for your day on the calendar. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Phrynne. Anything else from Commons? |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
I have the vast majority of gifts in already, and I know of several that will be late a day or two. This is just in case there is anyone I haven't managed to contact. |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
Nothing more today, Carl. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I don't have anything specific to announce, either, and our other deans could not make it today, so let's open the floor up to questions... Anything you ever wanted to know about Second Life, Caledon, or Oxbridge. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We will do our best to answer. |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Has anyone ever had a quirk where they couldn't enter an area others can enter - as if there was a force field in place? This is something that I've experienced across viewers and alts in a couple of locations. |
15:07 |
Martin (eccles58) |
I am getting that a lot if you mean a small area, not a sim boundary |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That can happen if you are banned from the area, or if the sim is full |
15:07 |
HunterRDahl |
No ban lines? |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also areas can ban people under a certain SL age |
15:07 |
Martin (eccles58) |
my prob is different |
15:07 |
HunterRDahl |
What the Chancellor said. I've had it happen if a location was full. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And if your RL age is under 18, you can't enter M-rated or A-rated sims. |
15:07 |
Agatha Macbeth |
The parcel maybe only open to a certain group? |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, Martin. A houseboat on a sim. The sim owner can't find the problem. I've also had it happen at Unihispana, I think? |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's possible, Agatha. |
15:08 |
HunterRDahl |
If it's a group limit, I think you'd see ban lines, though. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
At Unihispana, they had accidentally set their land info to allow only group members. |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
And it is only happening to me, on this house boat |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
And they changed this. |
15:08 |
Martin (eccles58) |
i get like a random invisible wall, which usually disappears shortly |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Oh, okay, Phrynne. That's good to know |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are the other people who can enter a member of a group? |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That you might not be |
15:09 |
Martin (eccles58) |
yes, same group |
15:09 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
that's possible. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, people can restrict entry so people who don't have payment info on file can't enter. |
15:09 |
|
Agatha Macbeth nods |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
It might not even be on purpose -- it is very easy to click or unclick a box on a page by accident while trying to do something else. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Very easy! |
15:10 |
HunterRDahl |
Having a houseboat in SL sounds awfully fun, though. That is, if the invisible walls don't ruin it. |
15:10 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Right |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I once blocked one of the Deans here by mistake. I could not see or hear them. |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Tranquil Bay (98,146,22) |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
very pretty sim |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I can take a look after the Q&A |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you have time to show me. |
15:12 |
HunterRDahl |
Oh! I just realized another way an invisible wall might be thrown in your way! If you've accidently derendered something. |
15:12 |
HunterRDahl |
(Have accidently done that to entire shops during hunts) |
15:12 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
It's The Trace, Carl. They're pretty experienced, and haven't had any other complaints. But sure, maybe you'll see something we don't |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
You're right -- I derendered a sign on campus once and kept walking into it. |
15:13 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
announcement? |
15:13 |
Martin (eccles58) |
Is there any way to get a forewarning before entering a place with a security orb? |
15:14 |
Agatha Macbeth |
The orb should be the warning Martin :) |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. Security orbs are annoying. That's one of the reasons their use is restricted in Caledon |
15:14 |
Martin (eccles58) |
yes ok i meant before being thrown out |
15:14 |
Martin (eccles58) |
i would rather have a ban line |
15:15 |
Agatha Macbeth |
They do give a period of grace before booting you usually |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Security Orbs should give a warning, but with lag and reaction times and ten second warnings, its often not enough. |
15:15 |
Martin (eccles58) |
not enough |
15:15 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
usually you get a warning. Although the warning time is usually so short I get tossed out anyway |
15:15 |
Martin (eccles58) |
you don't know which way to go |
15:15 |
Agatha Macbeth |
But if you are lagged that often doesn't help |
15:15 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
ask the owner/maker to re-script the orb |
15:15 |
Martin (eccles58) |
ok |
15:15 |
Martin (eccles58) |
thanks |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Andrea, do you have any social even announcements you would like to make today? |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Please join us this coming Tuesday night the 1st of November as we dance to the coming of fall. We will start the festivities at 6 PM and run till sometime after 8. Ms Cyhnthia Farshore will be our DJ for the evening as we celebrate. The music will be mix of tunes on the general theme of fall. We will be at the pumpkin patch to celebrate. No real theme except fall colors and dress. There will be a bonfire, snacks and drinks available. Caledon SouthEnd (120,45,861) |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... Let's take more questions... |
15:16 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Any word from Brace? |
15:16 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Is the fundraiser on for the 2cnd? |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Not as yet. I am sorry. I would assume the fundraiser is canceled. |
15:17 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Brace for acceleration? |
15:17 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Hope she's OK |
15:17 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I will look at another fundraiser for this month then. |
15:17 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Any ideas? |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would like to do a Caledon Photo contest again. The last one was several years ago. People took and submitted photos, and there was a voting period, where people "voted" by donating to the photos they liked best. The photo with the most donated to it won. |
15:19 |
HunterRDahl |
Pumpkin bowling? |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Turkey roll? |
15:19 |
Phrynne |
There are rideable or flyable chickens, but are there any rideable or flyable turkeys for racing? |
15:19 |
HunterRDahl |
If there aren't, there should be! |
15:20 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Oh my |
15:20 |
HunterRDahl |
"As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!". |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Search marketplace. There probably are. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question? |
15:21 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Hm, just wondered...is anyone aware of a conscious policy by LL to 'run down' the old welcome areas? |
15:21 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Some of them are real deserts now |
15:22 |
Phrynne |
I have seen nothing. |
15:22 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Ah Ok, it just makes me wonder where the noobs are all going, that's all :p |
15:22 |
Phrynne |
I know that some privately run welcome areas have come on harder times -- White Tiger Island is down to one region now. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't think it is a policy. I think Linden Lab turns over employees so often they have people on their community teams that have no idea what they have. |
15:23 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I think that LL is focussing on some of their newer places. Rather than their old welcome islands, I mean |
15:23 |
Agatha Macbeth |
And yes sir, I agree |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
LL has very little institutional memory. And they tend to get mad when people who have been in SL for much longer than them, tell them, "no, that did not work the last time you tried it back in 2007" |
15:25 |
Phrynne |
And, from what I've seen, little understanding of either inworld cultures or community-building -- or even the fact that they exist. |
15:25 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
Aren't they all focused on that second generation SL nowadays? |
15:26 |
Phrynne |
I feel about the second generation much as I feel about the Easter Bunny -- when I see it, I"ll believe it. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
About 2/3rds of the staff is focused on Sansar/SL2 |
15:26 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
what I thought, Carl .. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know it is alpha testing now. I suspect it will be so different from SL (based on what they have said) that there will be little crossover of users. Which would be good for LL. They would have two different profitable platforms. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am also skeptical whether LL can pull it off. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We will see. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:28 |
|
HunterRDahl raises her hand. Is Oxbridge going to have classes on jewelry making. And, if not, is there someplace that you would recommend? |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We used to, but no longer have a teacher. I would suggest Builder's Brewery |
15:29 |
HunterRDahl |
Okay. Thank you. :-D |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, note that nearly all jewelry making has now gone to mesh, so you will need to have skills in either using purchased full perm mesh or making your own to be competitive. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If there are no other questions, I guess we all get to leave early :) |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Anyone? |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming. I guess this concludes todays Q&A with the Deans |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
Thank you, everyone |
