Andrea never horns into the conversation. |
15:04 |
Eveplumb |
thank you |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Normally, the Deans would start by giving a short report from their areas. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But we don't have any tonight. |

15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So Wordsmith, anything you want to report? |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sure, re the CATS. I'd finished up going through and commenting and working on the scripts actually used to run the system and handed those over to Jorge -- full perm, no restrictions. |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
Yay!!! |
15:06 |
Gronk Seriman |
Wow! |
15:06 |
RainyDayRecess |
Nice work Word :) |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Cool! |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are they CATS airships running yet? |
15:07 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
excellent word |
15:07 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
good to hear\ |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's allowing him to see if he can get someone to map the routes faster than I can get it done. At the same time, I've about got a script that collects which parcel every 4x4 meter square belongs to along with info on the parcels. Something I want to apply a route finding algorithm to (Djikstra's or A*). |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, they still need routing, Carl. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
How is the routing done? Waypoints? Or is it programmed in? |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
Is this something that can be done simply by flying a possible route and recording coordinates? |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I also created a new dynamic directory name server under Google apps, since we have no ability to update the one Kaluura Boa had set up if needed. |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
Wow! |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So the current system is pretty much 100% your creation. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It basically read a notecard with locations or directions and the action to be taken. There's both a direct "move to" option and one that does bezier interpolation between given points. |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
I noticed you rounded out the little airship's route recently. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, it still owes much to Kaluura. I commented a lot and did some cleanup. The biggest change came in the watchtower/rezzer script. It now self-checks that it's URL is still working and won't rez a new ship unless it is. |
15:13 |
Eveplumb |
I got a question when building on a sim how can one measure a distance from one item to the next? |
15:13 |
RainyDayRecess |
(Kaluura would be proud Word:) |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are scripts you can buy that will return an exact distance. |
15:13 |
Eveplumb |
thank you |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I often rez a small object at one point and then move it to the other, recording the coordinates at both places. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or you could just rez a prim of the distance you want and put one end at the center of the first object. |
15:14 |
Eveplumb |
ok that sounds great |
15:14 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
rezz a cube, make sure the grid function is on. stretch it hold the stretch you will see the lines likea measure tape |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
lessa curate but functionall |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
acurate |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can buy one of these (free) on marketplace and apply to a prim for rough measurements |

15:18 |
Eveplumb |
why does a full sim cost so much ? |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Because LL can get that much money for a sim. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Linden Lab sets the pricing. |
15:20 |
Eveplumb |
do they ever give free land away? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One can run OpenSim on your own box or rent land on one of the OpenSim hosts for far less, but you generally lack the people. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Land on the mainland is close to free if you put in a ticket to claim some abandoned land. But then you have to pay monthly "rent" to Linden Lab to keep it. |
15:22 |
Eveplumb |
caledon has many sims how can you afford all of it? |
15:22 |
Gronk Seriman |
No. But there are many ways to get free use of land. On the Linden Main Lands, there are plenty of empty parcels to hang around in. There are art places that will let you build silly things on free lans. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Caledon is owned by Desmond Shang |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Everything in SL requires maintaining and running servers. Nothing is really static or permanent. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
People rent parts of sims from him and pay him in L$ |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He changes those L$ to RL US dollars and pays Linden Lab |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge rents this sim from Desmond Shang like anyone else in Caledon. |
15:23 |
Eveplumb |
wow i need to meet him |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
He is actually an unrelentingly cheerful guy. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He is |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Be on in the late evening. He chats in the ISC group. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He almost always has land for rent in Caledon, too |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you decide you want to live here. |
15:25 |
Eveplumb |
i have small parcel i rent |
15:25 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
can i give a suggestion ? |
15:25 |
Eveplumb |
abandon sim is the way to go i guess |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course. |
15:27 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
where i live have a lot of not used ground, th owners did a big castle with many rooms/apartments and rent it for low price |
15:27 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
50l - 50 prim |
15:27 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
this is the solution ro earn money and help with maintenance of sim |
15:27 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
to* |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Rental rates vary a lot throughout second life, tooo |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
too. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Land in Caledon is relatively more expensive than land on many estate sims, or land rented on the mainland. |
15:28 |
Eveplumb |
yes i noticed |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's also variance in the number of prims on a given size parcel. Caledon parcels tend to come with double prims, taking prims from the commonwealth land designed to be low in prim use. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The best way to compare rental rates is to also look at price per prim per month as well as land size. |
15:30 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
well... it was just a suggestion, the price have to be up with maintenance costs |
15:30 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
but works very well where i live. Star know my home the island |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, ultimately LL has to be paid their monthly tier, but there are different ways of achieving that. |
15:31 |
|
star (astarynite) smiles to Vesper, it is very big and nice |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We also have a weekly class on land here, too. |
15:32 |
Eveplumb |
besides sex what is the best way to make money on sl? |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
5pm SLT on Fridays |
15:32 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
welll... we are living a world wide crises, to emergent countries like mine |
15:32 |
Agatha Macbeth |
:P |
15:32 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
dollar its very expensive |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Buy it with RL money |
15:32 |
Gronk Seriman |
Make things to sell, or just simply buy Lindens. |
15:32 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
so many people its suffering with that fact |
15:32 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
here in Sl |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Unless you are a successful content creator (which takes a lot of skill and software now that things are all mesh), you are better off using money from a RL job to buy L$ |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The one's actually making money are those who can create product that others will buy. Likely mostly clothes, but not exclusively.. |
15:34 |
Martin (eccles58) |
some people host events for tips |
15:34 |
Martin (eccles58) |
dances |
15:34 |
star (astarynite) |
there are so many stores and manufacturers, I imagine they put out more money creating for the pennies they make in the long run |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It depends on how good their work is and how good their marketing is. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just like RL |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Events take land, so tips help pay tier. |
15:35 |
Vesper Lynd (jucastt) |
royal opera house earn money with spectacles tips |
15:35 |
Martin (eccles58) |
yes, i was thinking of dances in small places |
15:36 |
Gronk Seriman |
SL is one of the original Free to Play, Pay to Have Fun "games" online. |
15:36 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, SL does not have "takes months to complete"-tasks... |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Apart from creating things. |
15:37 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Like lots of "free to play, pay to win" FB games... |
15:37 |
Gronk Seriman |
I dunno. Just ask Wordmith. |
15:37 |
Gronk Seriman |
That was not a shot. That was mentioning the size of the task. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Creating something significant and well-done in mesh takes time, as does scripting and creating animations. |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yup. |
15:39 |
RainyDayRecess |
Especially when you're learning as you go :D |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm always there. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions or announcements? |
15:40 |
Agatha Macbeth |
I can confirm that reports of the CDS's imminent demise are unfounded...they are in fact very much alive and well |
15:41 |
Eveplumb |
no i should get back to my little house on the praire |
