Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2016-09-25

15:00 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Slow loading of surroundings in this end
15:00 Wordsmith Jarvinen Hi Carl.....
15:01 Carl Metropolitan Hello
15:02 Wordsmith Jarvinen Welcome, to the Oxbridge Deans' Q&A.
15:02 Carl Metropolitan Where we A and you Q. But we talk first :)
15:02 Wordsmith Jarvinen Phrynne, what have ye for this day?
15:03 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) hiya jorge
15:03 Phrynne I have finished decorating for fall -- so far -- at Oxbridge,, with 700 free prims remaining. I should be able to move a few things and add some ghosts or Halloween decor when that's appropriate.
15:04 Phrynne Other than that, much of this week has been spent offline, so I haven't done a lot more on paperwork or the Advent Calendar.
15:04 Phrynne And I've been helping new people in the Plaza when I've been here.
15:04 Phrynne that's it
15:04 Carl Metropolitan We need to keep some free prims. I talked to Desmond this week and he does not think that Oxbridge Village has enough free prims for us to use the land near the university. So any build contest (which I think is a good idea) will need to use a sky platform here.
15:05 Phrynne How many more do you think you'll need?
15:05 Wordsmith Jarvinen That and a few normal "attitude redirections" to elsewhere, Phrynne.
15:05 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) how many do you need?
15:05 Carl Metropolitan I will have to ask Samm
15:05 Carl Metropolitan It is her baby.
15:05 Phrynne Yes, Word, a few 'attitude redirections'
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen This is Oxbridge Village, Carl. You mean prims on this parcel then rather than the one just to the north?
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Phyrnne, I really like the idea of limited duration bans you have instituted and have been using for lesser offenders. I just wanted to mention that.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Right
15:07 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) wonders if a platform can beused like the sandbox, have some on one side and some onthe other
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Sorry. I was thinking this was Oxbridge.
15:07 Phrynne Thank you, Carl.
15:07 Phrynne If you need more prims on the campus, I can shuffle plantings a bit.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan We can use a sandbox like platform over Oxbridge
15:07 Phrynne but I"m not sure how many more prims I can free.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan We should be okay. I will let you know after I talk to Samm
15:08 Phrynne ok
15:08 Phrynne that's the downside of using low-prim plants -- add or take away a few and it almost makes no difference in land impact
15:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen Still more than what we have here, which is 130 prims.
15:10 Carl Metropolitan We should be fine. I just want to make sure we don't get tight when we roll out the multi-lingual tutorial signs, as those will be more primmy
15:11 Carl Metropolitan Not a lot, but when you go from 1 to 2 for nearly a hundred signs it adds up.
15:11 Phrynne Are you talking about the signs themselves or the notecards inside them? I thought the notecards would be without weight.
15:12 Wordsmith Jarvinen The notecards are without weight.
15:12 Wordsmith Jarvinen The question comes in how the sign determines to switch displays.
15:12 Carl Metropolitan Don't the signs have extra LI from where you can click to change signs?
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen A small number of flags can be done with materials on a mesh display, although the extra associated mesh complexity could change LI.
15:14 Wordsmith Jarvinen But the total number of materials per mesh prim is 8, including the rest of the object texturing.
15:15 Carl Metropolitan I'm assuming that we will need an extra LI per sign, maybe 2, so I'm just keeping that in mind. If we don't, cool.
15:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen Adding just a sensor of who is close, doesn't add prims, but has other constraints.
15:16 Carl Metropolitan Increased script load on the sim, I would assume.
15:16 Jorge Serapis Negligible, Carl. Rav and I tested it out.
15:16 Wordsmith Jarvinen To some extent, and the avatar has to be right at the poster.
15:17 A8ch What if two or more of different language are same proximity?
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen Much easier to set the timing to detect an incoming avatar than an incoming bullet. Avatar movement times are slow.
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen The one that got there first wins for an interval.
15:19 Kerhop Seattle not to get too techy, but I've found VolumeDetect to be more reliable than sensors if you're looking to temp-rez things
15:20 Wordsmith Jarvinen Not so much temp-rez but just detect and change the displayed texture. The point you make in terms of detection still applies, however.
15:21 Wordsmith Jarvinen That, however, does add primmage.
15:21 Carl Metropolitan You know how in the Charlie Brown animates specials, the adults all talk in weird distorted voices that you can't understand. I'm there now :)
15:21 Jorge Serapis Would it be possible for me to acquire a kiosk to see what I can do, buildwise?
15:22 Wordsmith Jarvinen We should be able to do that, Jorge.
15:22 Kerhop Seattle sets out a football for Carl to kick
15:22 Jorge Serapis Thank you.
15:23 Wordsmith Jarvinen And that basically takes us to a logical place to talk about what you've been doing, Jorge.
15:23 Jorge Serapis Ok.
15:23 Carl Metropolitan He's almost finished with the spanish translation!
15:23 Jorge Serapis So, I got up to 6.XX in the textures, when I was informed by Lindal she would be updating txtures.
15:24 Jorge Serapis I decided to stop to see just how much I'd have to redo, but to date I haven't noticed any changes. Phrynne told me about one extra tutorial in the 2.XX series, but I think that's it for the moment.
15:24 Jorge Serapis So I've started back up, aiming for a more sedate pace of 2 a day.
15:25 Jorge Serapis I've just finished up to 6.07..
15:25 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yes, I'd think a limited amount would change.
15:25 Wordsmith Jarvinen Possibly an addition here and there, but that's not a re-edit.
15:25 Jorge Serapis .. I have a bit of work coming up this week... but I'm guesstimating to be finished with the full tutorial Spanish translation in a couple weeks.
15:26 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I can't emphasize how thrilled I am to see this happening here. Thank you, Jorge, Phrynne and all the rest who have worked on this.
15:26 Jorge Serapis As to my Portugese translator, apparently she's been testifying before Congress sub commitees and moving house... so she's had some other things pressing her for time.
15:27 Jorge Serapis She's got the English notes and will work on them for me as soon as she can carve out some free time.
15:27 Jorge Serapis As for the French translations, Miss Stereo's also has had her flippers full, but is keeping them in mind.
15:27 Wordsmith Jarvinen As long as those other activities don't destroy her, it still should happen.
15:28 Jorge Serapis It should, yes.. and they won't.
15:28 Wordsmith Jarvinen And with the benefit of any experience you've gained along the way.
15:29 Jorge Serapis So I calculate about approximately 108 hours of work so far on the tutorial textures to date.
15:29 Carl Metropolitan My sympathies go out to your Portuguese translator for having to endure politicians. That's even more horrific than moving house.
15:29 Jorge Serapis Y'all have copies of everything I've done so far.
15:29 Wordsmith Jarvinen You're doing an amazing job with them, Jorge.
15:29 Jorge Serapis Thank you...
15:30 Jorge Serapis ..and once I get my hands on translations, it should go faster.
15:30 Jorge Serapis *ends transmission*
15:30 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) looks around for the outer limits
15:30 Wordsmith Jarvinen And this becomes more important than ever with the instability of many of the non-English help places.
15:31 Wordsmith Jarvinen Carl?
15:32 Jorge Serapis Oh, and last, but not least important, thanks to Phrynne for her proofreading.
15:32 Carl Metropolitan No. I don't have anything interesting or important to say.
15:32 Carl Metropolitan We should take questions though.
15:33 Wordsmith Jarvinen Phrynne, are you a multii-lingual proof-reader?
15:33 Phrynne I have some knowledge of French, German and Spanish; also four years of Latin and two years of German and one year of classical Greek studies. It's more a matter of looking at word patterns, and looking up words to check spelling.
15:34 Phrynne I'm very glad we're not translating into Latin, though; it has been too long since I studied it.
15:34 Wordsmith Jarvinen Nods....
15:34 Phrynne is a part-time language junkie
15:35 Wordsmith Jarvinen I so gather.
15:35 Carl Metropolitan A latin translation would certainly be in them, but of little actual use :)
15:35 Carl Metropolitan theme, I mean
15:35 Jorge Serapis I was a bit alarmingly happy when I used an ATM for the first time at the Vatican to see the prompts were in Latin.
15:36 Wordsmith Jarvinen There is something rather "neat" about that.
15:36 Jorge Serapis Ya. I stayed with it, just coz I could.
15:36 Ave (averager) Greetings, everyone
15:36 Carl Metropolitan Hello Averager
15:37 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Hi Ave
15:37 Wordsmith Jarvinen Not a lot from myself this week. Was a bit under the weather, that left me "meshing around" but not much cognition.
15:38 Aylaria (emberell) With any luck, you'll be in prim and proper condition soon enough
15:38 Wordsmith Jarvinen I think so [ :) ]. And good to see you here again, Aylaria.
15:38 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I hope you feel better soon, Dean Over-Committed.
15:38 Aylaria (emberell) grins, and waves a wing
15:39 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, let's open for questions.

15:44 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) ewell the floats are there
15:44 Carl Metropolitan Any questions for us?
15:44 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) i hear crickets
15:45 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) .lol now i do hear crickets
15:45 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) fails to see cricket umpire.
15:46 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) I can adds mah caroling book and carol for uyus all
15:46 Ave (averager) (Um, now when happening finally encounter here to see ou all, my questions may have escaped onto coffee moment...)
15:46 Carl Metropolitan I once worked at a place that was built on a huge concrete slab--over a mile long. A military aircraft assembly structure. Once a year all the crickets who lived under the concrete would come out on to the parking lots to mate. They would cover the parking lots. And get run over. The company had to hire people to sweep dead crickets.
15:47 Phrynne sounds like the 17-year locusts we get
15:47 Crashy (ceallachancashel) That sounds like some sort of moral lesson analogy...
15:48 Tiny Carolers ~*~ Here we come A-waffling please feed us Breakfast Food! Here we come A-hungering so help our Starving Mood!~*~
15:48 Ave (averager) Hmm, if actioning, am interested to hear o f things overall, as being listening, but then what might be my possiblities to *add* to the environments I happen to be.
15:48 Tiny Carolers ~*~ Knives & Forks Come to Me, And a Warm Butter Patty, And please Serve us some Syrup & Chopped up Pecans Tooooo...~*~
15:48 Carl Metropolitan These were crickets; That's what was so odd about it.
15:48 Tiny Carolers ~*~ And Please Sprinkle some Berries on them Toooo! Here we come A-waffling please Feed us Tasty Treats!~*~
15:48 Carl Metropolitan I think that it was the huge building they could live under created a perfect environment for them.
15:48 Badass Fae (larkylouz) LOL - love the lyrics.
15:48 Phrynne Some probably lived inside it, too
15:48 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, if nothing else, then we adjourn.
15:49 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thank you all for coming.
15:49 Sage Willowbark (annmarie1956) Thank you
15:49 Wordsmith Jarvinen Oh, one further annoucement.
15:50 Wordsmith Jarvinen Betram Keith will be taking over Samm's basic building class and moving to Thursday's at 9pm.

15:51 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yep.
15:52 Wordsmith Jarvinen "Speaker for the Crickets".
15:52 Carl Metropolitan Can I get a copy of the cricket box?
15:53 Carl Metropolitan Thank you
15:53 lovejoy2199 Base Jumping Time.
15:53 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Mr. Lovejoy, I sometimes wonder if you come just for the base jumps?
15:53 Badass Fae (larkylouz) ;^)
15:54 lovejoy2199 LOL...LOL
15:54 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I suspect the same...
15:54 lovejoy2199 Just like the challenge.
