15:02 |
Brace Coral |
woo Deans droppin from the sky lol |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Here's Lindal now. So, A just in time Dean night. |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
whoof! |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Do you want to run this Carl? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I can. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
By all means then. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. This is Oxbridge's combination help, questions, open staff meeting, and general announcements meeting. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First I'm going to ask the various deans for their reports, then make some announcements, then we will open the room to any questions you might have about Second Life, Caledon, or Oxbridge. |
15:05 |
|
Carl Metropolitan Phrynne, can you start for us? |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
Sure. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
In the last week I've set up a conversation area under the big gazebo near the Rose Garden, so people can gather there whenever they wish. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I saw it. It is very nice. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
I am hoping to have better refreshments than coconut milk available soon. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
I'm also continuing to add freebies to the Railroad Station and the small gazebo behind it, and should have a couple more there in a day or so. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We should talk about instrumenting those, Phrynne. |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
The Rose Garden gazebo has been underused...that's a good idea, Phrynne |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
I've thought for a while that it would be a good place for discussoins. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
*discussions |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
or small meetings |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
And that's all from Commons for now. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal? Anything from your area? |
15:09 |
Lindal Kidd |
Not much this week, Carl. I'm continuing to work with Jenya, updating tutorial posters for textbooks |
15:09 |
Lindal Kidd |
and that's about it from here! |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Did you ever find a use for the Avoiding Scams posters I did for the Hall of Money & Commerce? Or did those not fit? |
15:11 |
Lindal Kidd |
hmmm...did you send those to me? I'm not seeing them in my inventory. Checking local files... |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. Maybe I screwed up. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will send them again. |
15:12 |
Lindal Kidd |
ty! |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, on to you? |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nothing major. Had some RL deadlines this last week. Preparing to run some statistics plots for the panel next Friday. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I put in local teleports between the chat circle down below and up here. Posting today's events on the SL calendar it dawned on me that the event calendar just links to the parcel, not something 2000 m in the sky. |

Brace Coral gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If anyone has good ideas for drumming up more students to some of the good classes, please notecard them to me. Lindal, for example had good turnout this week, but I've seen classes with one attendee. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or less. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Several bits of news from me. First, I've been building and have completed a new Oxbridge display for VWBPE 2016. Many thanks to Martini for her Stained glass and Ravelli for his poster stands. VWBPE stands for Virtual Words Best Practices in Education. This is an inworld academic conference that's been taking place annually for about six years now. The VWBPE Oxbridge display will be open to the public tomorrow. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In other VWBPE news, the Featured Panel on Friday will be Caledon Oxbridge. It will be Friday, March 11, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. 3:50 p.m. SLT |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Conference website: http://vwbpe.org/ |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
Huzzzah! |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
An announcement with a LM will be sent out close to the panel. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The panelists will be: myself, Wordsmith, Larkylou, Aevalle Galicia (who will talk about her PhD dissertation that was partially about Oxbridge), Andrea Jones, and Nyree Rain |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have finally gotten a contact from the moderator and will be forwarding stuff from him to the participants. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In sort of related to Oxbridge news, my Basic Builders Grid is now up free on Marketplace, so people won't get ripped off by freebie resalers: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/180336 |
15:21 |
Phrynne |
that's a very handy tool for building. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Another announcement: Please notice that Brace and Dove are now wearing Oxbridge Adjunct as their roles. That's a sanctioned title -- not someone trying to spoof newbies. |
15:21 |
Brace Coral |
Yay! |
15:22 |
Brace Coral |
hehehe |
15:22 |
Professor Jack (professorjack) |
Yay. |
15:22 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
㋡ |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or, if they are, it's with permission. |
15:22 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
:-) |
15:22 |
Brace Coral |
yup :D *beams at Phrynne* |
15:22 |
|
Phrynne beams back |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She will not be wearing that Oxbridge Adjunct title for long. Brace Coral will be officially joining us as the new Dean of Development (fund raising and publicity) starting next Friday. I'm going to work with her to bring her up to speed on our existing fundraising efforts and transition stuff to her over the next few weeks. |
15:23 |
Brace Coral |
Thank You! |
15:23 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
Yay, Brace! |
15:23 |
Phrynne |
hurray! |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hurrah! |
15:23 |
Gronk Seriman |
Congratulations! |
15:23 |
Professor Jack (professorjack) |
Congratualtions. |
15:23 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Looks great, Carl. Thank you. |
15:23 |
|
Brace Coral blows kisses to the roaring crowds! |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
ty Brace. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She singlehandedly brought NCI from the point of having less than 3000L$ in the bank to their current cash flush position last year, so she's not only an amazing teacher and helper but also a kick ass fundraiser! |
15:23 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Hey, Congratulations and welcome, Brace! |
15:24 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I'm just worried that she's shy, Carl. |
15:24 |
Brace Coral |
LMAO |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She will get over it :) |
15:24 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
Yes she is :)) |
15:24 |
|
Brace Coral WINKS at Larkyyyy ;) |
15:24 |
|
Lindal Kidd snorts |
15:24 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) grins |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Larky, it is a good coincidence that I wasn't drinking my tea at that moment. |
15:24 |
Brace Coral |
lollll |
15:24 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
HAHAHA |
15:24 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I'll try harder, Word. |
15:24 |
Brace Coral |
I'll come out of my shell eventually :D |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That, I believe. :P |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This is sort of a soft launch of her new position. I will be making a formal announcement at the VWBPE panel next week. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's all I have for this week. Let's open the floor up to questions. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any help you need, Brace, just holler. You don't even have to stalk me, although ..... |
15:27 |
Brace Coral |
ha! |
15:27 |
|
Brace Coral likes stalking Word :) |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And since I coded the ad boards in the lecture halls and outside the one below, I can explain those. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Designed to be easy to use. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The picture behind me is the VWBPE display for this year |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It will get recycled for SLnB, too |
15:28 |
Brace Coral |
gorgeous! |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And do look at the stained glass pieces. Those go with the different tutorial halls down below. Done by Martini Discovolante. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I added a "Stained Glass by Martini Discovolante" to the display as the final touch last night :) |
15:30 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
the whole thing is grand, and I do love the stained glass. Thank you to Martini, please. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Questions? |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh, I have a request. If you buy one of my (free) builders grids from marketplace, could you please leave a review, so that they go higher in the search engine there and push down the guy selling the texture further. |
15:31 |
Brace Coral |
Just a quick comment :) |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/180336 |
15:32 |
Brace Coral |
I have a couple of ideas on how to boost class attendance, so I'll be communicating with Lindal/Word on that soon :) |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Cool. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Questions? Comments? Complaints? Consultations? Communications? |
15:33 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
GuillerminaEscudero gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I commented some time last week that I though of sending out the Huns to pillage villages and impress people into the classes, but I suspect that's just not viable as a long-term strategy. |
15:33 |
Brace Coral |
lol |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
It's two weeks or so before Easter-- I suspect that a lot of university students are buried under midterms instead of exploring Oxbridge. But spring break is coming. |
15:35 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) adds some mustard to a Hun before chewing him up. |
15:35 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
`Most of th eHuns we have around here call each and every Hunny, so they may not be very effective. |
15:35 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Anna (aughra) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank everyone for the donations to the coin today, too. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and when Spring break comes ..... |
15:36 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) polishes the nerf bat |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
... we will get griefers who are frustrated they are not on the beaches of America getting drunk and laid? |
15:36 |
Phrynne |
It's possible. |
15:36 |
Brace Coral |
prolly |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
BTW, I've put up an ad for Andrea's Caledon Nights, for all that she's done running events that help Oxbridge both directly and indirectly. She's also got one coming up on the 8th. |
15:36 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
yes..... |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yep. About my thoughts, Carl. And maybe UP returns. |
15:37 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) checks his shoeshine |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
UP = Ugandan Prince, a person of many names who comes and claims to newbies to teach a required course. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That seems quite appropriate. |
15:38 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Using very similar body shapes... |
15:40 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
and speach patterns |
15:40 |
Brace Coral |
THAT dude.. |
15:40 |
Brace Coral |
he gets around |
15:40 |
Phrynne |
but generally only during university vacations. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've put Guillermina (who is in the back row) in contact with Des regarding her offer to create Steampunk trains from mesh. |
15:40 |
Phrynne |
or holidays |
15:41 |
lovejoy2199 |
Trains!!!!!! |
15:41 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ooo! |
15:41 |
Brace Coral |
:))) |
15:41 |
Phrynne |
cool! |
15:41 |
Professor Jack (professorjack) |
In Caledon, the trains always run on time. |
15:42 |
GuillerminaEscudero |
Thanks by the comment Mr. Wordsmith.... |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Like wizards. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh excellent news. |
15:42 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
㋡ |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Guillermina |
15:43 |
Lindal Kidd |
Pardon me Chancellor, everyone...Real Life is hollering for attention. |
15:43 |
Brace Coral |
HUGGS Lindal :)) |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, Miss Kidd. tc. |
15:43 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you, Guillermina (and Jenya, if she is here) Two nifty projects. I'm happy to see you both contributing so much to Oxbridge! |
15:43 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
bye Dean ㋡ |
15:43 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Take care, Lindl |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any news on the CAT, Wordsmith? |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Should be thinking of routing by next week. Another good evening and the script updates will be done, including commenting. |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, pinged Jorge to see if he could find any data on the old routes. |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I had been wondering. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Phrynne is still collecting ideas for "What to do in Caledon" |
15:46 |
Phrynne |
I'm continuing a region-by-region tour, taking notes of what is interesting and fun |
15:47 |
Phrynne |
There is a *lot* out there. |
15:47 |
Brace Coral |
yes :) |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Rainy and I have talked through to having her create and animate a walking horse for the carriages in Blender (including bone articulations), which I can then measure angles and positions for in Blender and use to script in SL. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or just write a Python script for Blender to output that. |
15:50 |
GuillerminaEscudero |
Mr. WS, Carl, and Ms. Phrynne: I see the grid of classes, all are about SL help for users, i dont see it as a bad thing, but do you try to include some classes about other things like: "Steam power history" or "Victorian Architecture" or another class non related to SL? |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To be honest, we've had a hard enough time getting just the SL basics going. There have been some one-off lectures on other topics, but no regular classes. |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I had one person contact me about teaching a class (or seminars) on Steampunk culture and variants, but I haven't had enough daggers to pin her to the wall on that (her RL seems to interfere). |
15:52 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) senses a tad of frustration in Word's imagery today. . . |
15:52 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
;^) |
15:52 |
Brace Coral |
hehehe |
15:53 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Steampunk Convention: A sci-fi con with absinthe in place of vodka. |
15:53 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Occasional lecture, maybe? |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not at her per se, but there isn't a Caledon directory of people's diverse knowledge or willingness and time to teach it. |
15:54 |
GuillerminaEscudero |
Thanks by the answer, free time is a valuated resource... |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Memo time, I think, and I will include such things among the possibilities. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, Elf. Occasional lecture rather than weekly classes. |
15:56 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
"Guest speaker - One Night Only" |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yep. |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Another idea might be to have guest lecturers on unusual bits of SL culture that many newbies might not be familar with. |
15:57 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
The hard part is always getting the class to a presentable state. Once they're written, on can conceivably recycle them as long as they're current. |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lucky we have the lecture hall up here. For the M rating. |
15:58 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
*one can |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good point. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, yes I'm open to ideas or those with the ability to present who want a venue -- as long as it's clear that the direct benefit is to the student. |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, it is four pm SLT, so that's all the time we have this week for Q&A |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you all soon though. |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks for coming, thanks for your questions, and thanks to those of you who hit the tip jar :) |
16:00 |
Gronk Seriman |
SL sports is an example. I never realized how many sports you can play quite well here until recently. |
16:00 |
Brace Coral |
Thank You! |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
M I C K E ... oh wait... wrong time and venue. |
16:01 |
Brace Coral |
yeah Gronk :) |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
16:01 |
Brace Coral |
I stumbled on this huge soccer arena and was like woo |
16:01 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you for all your hard work, everyone. There's been ample evidence of it tonight. |
16:01 |
Dove (dovelady88) |
Thank you very much for the informative hour you have all given |
16:01 |
Brace Coral |
HUGGS to the Deans :) |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
Thanks for coming, everyone |
16:01 |
GuillerminaEscudero |
Thanks Deans! |
16:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Okay, bedtime for me. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |

16:01 |
Brace Coral |

16:02 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:02 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |

16:02 |

I really do love it here :) |
16:02 |
