Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2016-02-14

15:01 Carl Metropolitan Welcome to Q&A With the Deans
15:01 Carl Metropolitan First we will give brief reports on our areas, then we will answer questions from you all about anything you want to ask.
15:01 Carl Metropolitan Let's start the reports with Wordsmith
15:04 Wordsmith Jarvinen Not a lot this week. Was working on communication between objects in different sims. Things seem to be working this morning, but at least for several days received emails (both subject and body) would get truncated when a script was initialized and then come across okay after that.
15:05 Wordsmith Jarvinen Phrynne and I both got notecards from Jenya Willowshade, one offer to make inworld texts and one to glean more freebies for the train station.
15:05 Phrynne I'm going to be talking with her this week about particulars.
15:06 Carl Metropolitan Make inworld texts? Like we discussed last week?
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen Vinnie performances is up as a sponsor on the ad panels in front of the lecture hall. Webpage will follow shortly.
15:07 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yes, it was a response to last week, but not notecards. Actually graphic simulated books.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Those could be nice too, but would not work well for a new user
15:07 Wordsmith Jarvinen I've passed that on to Lindal also Phrynne.
15:08 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Seems like using the books could be a skill we focus on teaching.
15:08 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yes, definitely things to discuss on what might go into such matters.
15:08 Phrynne What would it take, one more signbaord?
15:08 Lindal Kidd sure...one for each segment of the tutorial. A textbook giver.
15:09 Wordsmith Jarvinen Relatedly, we still could use an editor for the "Oxbridge Guardian". (person, not software)
15:09 Carl Metropolitan A request I from last week I would like to pass on. If you are a dean up here talking, consider activating your typing animation so people are not waiting for you to say something you are not actually going to say.
15:10 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Phynne, do you have anything to report?
15:11 Phrynne I've been offline in RL most of the week, because of illness, but in my limited time here I have been helping Word to update the information for the class on Things to Do in Caledon When You're (Not) Dead.
15:11 Carl Metropolitan Thank you.
15:11 Carl Metropolitan Lindal?
15:12 Lindal Kidd As Word said, Jenya Willowshade offered to help make textbooks
15:12 Lindal Kidd I've been in contact with her, and we're going to get together this week to discuss particulars
15:13 Lindal Kidd Attendance at my classes the last two weeks has been down. I'm considering changing my mouthwash.
15:13 Carl Metropolitan I have an idea I want to propose. I would like to steal an event that has been quite popular at Builders Brewery and NCI—Newbie Show & Tell
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen Traffic was down this last week.
15:14 Lindal Kidd I only saw one of the RL students that Larky noted were likely to be coming through this week, and she didn't respond to my greeting
15:14 Wordsmith Jarvinen Can you tag someone to run it?
15:14 Carl Metropolitan I will try to find someone.
15:14 Carl Metropolitan I think I can get the few bits needed to run it together.
15:14 Wordsmith Jarvinen I saw about 3 or 4 with the class nametag, Lindal.
15:14 Lindal Kidd a show n tell sounds like fun. Maybe it could alternate with Trivia
15:15 Carl Metropolitan I know it seems hard to believe, but when I was in my first two years of SL, I did trivia shows twice a week every week at the Shelter :)
15:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen Which I was going to note that if you're back to having time and can find a day that works......
15:15 Lindal Kidd nods eagerly
15:15 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Brian is always looking for ways to help, Carl. He might be worth contacting.
15:15 Carl Metropolitan I will check with some people, including him.
15:16 Carl Metropolitan We are now up to two doctoral dissertations written prominently featuring Oxbridge. You all have heard about Aevalle's, but last night I found one in Greek about us.
15:17 Carl Metropolitan Sadly, it was all Greek to me, but the abstract was in English :)
15:17 Lindal Kidd oh...we got a request for a cloak making class. Maybe Cymbal could consider that?
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen We can ask. It's not directly related to what she's teaching and she does have RL commitments; but we can ask.
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen (and I will)
15:19 Wordsmith Jarvinen Carl, I also came across another paper on virtual world education. http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.470.8608&rep=rep1&type=pdf
15:19 Wordsmith Jarvinen Specific to SL.
15:20 Carl Metropolitan Thank you.
15:20 Carl Metropolitan I am downloading it now.
15:20 Lindal Kidd (I'm done with my report, BTW)
15:22 Wordsmith Jarvinen Any reports, announcements, etc or observations from the tutors+.
15:22 Phrynne None that I am aware of.
15:22 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Only couple of Brazilians this week. Strange
15:23 Wordsmith Jarvinen Maybe that was the traffic decrease, Elf.
15:23 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Quite possible.
15:23 Carl Metropolitan Let's move on to questions. I don't worry much about week to week traffic trends.
15:24 Carl Metropolitan Questions from the audience?
15:24 Carl Metropolitan About Oxbridge, SL, Caledon, anything?
15:24 Lindal Kidd vegetables from the audience?
15:24 Brace Coral I have a question :)
15:24 Carl Metropolitan Go Brace!
15:25 Brace Coral Can folks who aren't "offically" tutors/helpers help newbies here at Oxbridge courtyard?
15:25 Carl Metropolitan Phrynne, can you take that one?
15:26 Phrynne People who aren't official can and do help in the plaza -- but it's something we try to keep an eye on. Some are excellent.
15:26 Phrynne Some are ...less so.
15:26 Phrynne And some like to play tricks.
15:26 Brace Coral nods
15:26 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, Yes, with provisions.
15:26 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) And some just weird
15:26 Brace Coral lol
15:27 Phrynne That too.
15:27 Carl Metropolitan Brace are there any people in particular that you are thinking of?
15:27 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) _We_ know they are weird but the newcomers may not...
15:27 Badass Fae (larkylouz) We also have some people who regularly bring newbies here and shepherd them through the orientation.
15:27 Brace Coral Yes, Dove and some others I've trained in Helping
15:27 Elenabeth Portal I've helped people on ocassion when they asked in Oxbridge Chat here, no one ever complained.
15:28 Carl Metropolitan Let me get with you and Phyrnne after the Q&A on that.
15:28 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I primarily see what the others do and act accordingly.
15:28 Phrynne The only real problem I've seen is with someone who gives out incorrect information, contradicts a trained tutor, or interferes with a tutor helping someone. That's not good.
15:28 Wordsmith Jarvinen It's much the same as becoming an "apprentice tutor". Can you work as a team and not lead newbies into the wilderness.
15:28 Brace Coral yes.
15:28 Phrynne But, again, those are few and far between.
15:29 Carl Metropolitan Unless the newbies are asking for the wilderness.
15:29 Brace Coral that makes sense :)
15:29 Wordsmith Jarvinen (Unless the tutor is wrong, and then we need to address it at a staff training level)
15:29 Carl Metropolitan If they want the wilderness we abandon them on the mainland :)
15:29 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) hahaha
15:29 Brace Coral lol
15:30 Phrynne There's always the Portal Park, where they can find dinosaurs to chase
15:30 Lindal Kidd I've had Orange Planer,. from White Tiger Mentors, drop in on my Avatar Safety class and provide many helpful observations.
15:30 Carl Metropolitan Is that class still extremely popular, Lindal?
15:31 Lindal Kidd hmm...well, NONE of my classes has been heavily attended lately
15:31 Lindal Kidd but Safety is probably the most popular of the three
15:31 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yes, a good example. As I've had some knowledgeable in specific aspects of mesh drop in from time to time and contribute.
15:32 Carl Metropolitan I was wondering because that is a class that might be good to offer a second session of at another time to catch people who can't be on when it's offered.
15:32 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) It's an excellent class - and it's a good idea to offer a second one
15:32 Lindal Kidd a good thought. I could do an offering on Friday, I am usually working from home that day
15:32 Carl Metropolitan Would you be willing (if there is demand) to have someone else teach a session from your notes
15:33 Carl Metropolitan It is just something I'd like to think about because it's a really valuable class. I wish we could make new users take it.
15:33 Lindal Kidd and certainly someone else could do an offering. I'd like them to sit in on at least one presentation first.
15:33 Carl Metropolitan It would be nice to offer an evening session perhaps.
15:33 Wordsmith Jarvinen Of course.
15:33 Carl Metropolitan Just a suggestion.
15:34 Carl Metropolitan More questions?
15:34 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I wonder if you could tap Tasha to teach a session in the middle of the SL night?
15:35 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Perhaps every other week, so we don't overload her?
15:35 Lindal Kidd I'll discuss that with her!
15:35 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Not in her bathtime
15:35 Brace Coral lol
15:36] Badass Fae (larkylouz): Has she been bathing with the fish again? That girl!
15:36 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) No, I meant her RL bath time..
15:36 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) Dumb question .. why would "midddle of SL night" be a good timing for a class?
15:36 Brace Coral *muffled giggles*
15:36 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Because it would be day in the other side of the planet
15:36 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Because Europe is wide awake!
15:36 Lindal Kidd catches the Europeans, if we make it the middle of the USA night.
15:36 Carl Metropolitan To catch people in non US time zones
15:37 Phrynne We get people here from all over the world -- Australia, Asia, Russia, Europe among them
15:37 Phrynne For some this is the only time they can be in SL
15:37 Phrynne and they do come through Oxbridge in what for us are the small hours
15:37 Phrynne Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! :D :p :D :p :D
15:37 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) Europe is 9 in the morning - people are at work, or still sleeping
15:37 Phrynne oww. sorry
15:37 Carl Metropolitan We have nothing in the 9pm time band for example\]
15:37 Phrynne did not know about that gesture!
15:37 Lindal Kidd LOL!
15:37 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) :-)
15:37 Brace Coral fun one!
15:38 Brace Coral I did have one other Q
15:38 Wordsmith Jarvinen nods
15:39 Brace Coral I know theres horse drawn carriage rides. Is there a place to catch them from here?
15:40 Wordsmith Jarvinen Not currently. They were inadvertently returned during a griefing and the creator is long from entering SL.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan "long?"
15:40 Brace Coral aww ok
15:40 Brace Coral Thank You!
15:41 Wordsmith Jarvinen I do have someone with an art background and Blender skills and am working toward scripting the movement.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan And speaking of Blender, Ravelli continues to work behind the scenes perfecting his mesh for Oxbridge
15:41 Wordsmith Jarvinen Gargoyles first, and then horses. Meanwhile practicing the scripting on a mesh shark.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan Yes! Gargoyles!
15:42 Lindal Kidd Personally, I'd rather see Caledon Air Transport back in service. You don't have to clean up dirigible poop.
15:42 Wordsmith Jarvinen Oh, that's on the top of the list.
15:43 Jorge Serapis you forget the glory days of the CATs spawns.
15:43 Wordsmith Jarvinen Part of the intersim communication reliability I was working on.
15:43 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Gargoyles without miniguns, one hopes..
15:43 Badass Fae (larkylouz) But, but, Wordsmith, you promised me slug-drawn carriages!!!
15:44 Carl Metropolitan Word is hard at work on CAT
15:44 Lindal Kidd snickers!
15:44 Phrynne does not want to have to clean slug slime from the walkways
15:44 Wordsmith Jarvinen And Señor Jorge and I were conversing on the CATs this last week. And about avoiding rerouting through sims which might disappear.
15:45 Lindal Kidd ARE any more likely to disappear?
15:45 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, Rainy did like the idea of perhaps creating private slug-drawn carriages....
15:45 Phrynne We have lost Rothesay, which causes problems with at least one railroad line
15:45 Brace Coral slugs :)
15:46 Wordsmith Jarvinen That was partly me stressing the importance of learning whose objects belong on the sim BEFORE a griefing.
15:47 Wordsmith Jarvinen What the replacement might be if I cobble together a somewhat replacement.
15:47 Brace Coral I was thinking of the giant snail races... :)
15:47 Lindal Kidd those buggers are FAST
15:47 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Without or without pouring salt on them?
15:47 Brace Coral they are!
15:48 Carl Metropolitan Any more questions for us?
15:49 Brace Coral /me glances at her list
15:50 Brace Coral only two things today :)
15:50 Carl Metropolitan someone is playing crickets I see
15:51 Wordsmith Jarvinen Aye.
15:51 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I have good howls...
15:52 Carl Metropolitan If there are no more questions, we shall just adjourn ten minutes early
15:52 Carl Metropolitan Thanks for coming everyone.
15:52 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:52 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:52 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:52 Carl Metropolitan If you two can spare the time, I'd like to talk to Brace and Phyrnne in my office.
15:52 Gronk Seriman Thank you, Deans!
15:52 Phrynne sure
15:52 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thank you all.
15:52 乇๓เ (emilykathrinedubois) Thank you.
15:53 Lindal Kidd have a great week, everyone!
15:53 Carl Metropolitan See you all soon
15:53 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Okay, bdtime for me.
15:53 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Be seeing you
15:54 Lindal Kidd runs out the door and flings herself off the edge!
