Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome all. This is the Oxbridge Deans' weekly Q&A session, our chance for some brief statements on what we're up to and then opening it for questions, on Oxbridge, SL, and beyond. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(I noticed Lindal just came online, so I suspect she'll be joining us shortly). |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Larky, do you want to start-off for the Deans of Commons? |
15:04 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Sure. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, Dean Kidd. |
15:04 |
Lindal Kidd |
whew! Thank you Word. Sorry I'm late |
15:04 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I've been working on revising notecards related to Tutoring in preparation for the next edition of the Faculty Kit. Also all the usual stuff we do. |
15:04 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Hi Lindal |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What sort of notecards (i.e topics)? |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I also have tendered my resignation as Dean of Commons, effective on the New Year. I'll still be around, and have several projects to finish up, but I'll be working at a slower pace and having a bit more fun, I hope. I'll let Phrynne talk about her plans for the future of Commons. |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
she sure has! I got about a dozen notecards from Larky a day ago |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
thank you, Larky! I think. |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Well, instruction on "How to be a Tutor" and related topics, Also I collect intersting notecards and pass them on to Lindal to keep her busy. ;^p |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
At this point the only announcement I have in that regard is that Tasha has kindly agreed to take on the post of Assistant Dean of Commons for Tutors. |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
that's all for me. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
And we are still working out the details. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
In other matters, the Advent Calendar has worked out very well -- people who have not been to Oxbridge since they started, or may never have been, have come as well as more familiar faces |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥ |

Lindal Kidd |
♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥ |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
And I notice that a few shops in the grid are also leaving their gifts available for the month, so let's hope it starts a trend |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yeah, Phrynne! |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
The visitors have been great, with very few difficulties. |
15:09 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) has been ignoring quite a few people who have more goosebumps than clothing, but all in good fun. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which is all helpful to the viability of Oxbridge as part of the Caledon community. (and new visitors are up about 20% this week). |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
I am hoping to start *earlier* on it next year -- not this moment of course -- but if in the next couple of months you have any ideas about what you could contribute -- or what you'd like to see in it, please let me know. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
I will be taking it down late on Dec. 31, so let people know it's still there till then. |
15:10 |
Lindal Kidd |
Airships, please! |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
We had hoped to have some this year, but there were scripting problems |
15:10 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) whispers |
And Phrynne, you plan to incorporate the Advent gifts into Oxbridge's stock of freebies, as well, yes? |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Working on that, Lindal. |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
Yes -- the majority of them will go into the Railroad Station as freebies |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
sometime in January |
15:11 |
Lindal Kidd |
(I meant for the Advent Calendar next year, not CAT...though that'll be nice too) |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
And that's all for me |
15:12 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
You really did an awesome job on that Calendar, Phrynne. Folks, she deserves a round of applause! |

Indeed she has. And on the holiday decor of Oxbridge. |

15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lindal, anything from Oxbridge Information? |
15:13 |
Lindal Kidd |
I second the compliments on the campus decorations. I did add some lights to the Christmas trees in the arrival plaza and the classroom. |
15:14 |
Lindal Kidd |
I must remember to remove them when those come down |
15:14 |
Lindal Kidd |
I got some suggestions on changes to the foreign language translations in the flag placards, thank you Jorge |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
To step back for a second, while we are on applause, I believe Dean Larky also deserves a hand. She's has worked hard to bring organization to a number of areas. |
15:15 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
thank you, Wordsmith |

Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) picks up two vuvuzelas but thinks better of it. |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
lol |
15:16 |
Lindal Kidd |
I am also going over the giant data dump Larky sent me, and checking landmarks in a huge number of notecards for the Faculty kit update |
15:16 |
Lindal Kidd |
oh, and Elfbiter sent me an update of his landmarks for newbies card. Thank you, EB |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ahh. Translation corrections can be important. There are numerous signs in the world that mean other than what was intended. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Lindal, feel free to weed out what's useful in that collection! |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
I will, and I'll run it back by you when I've read/edited them all :) |
15:17 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
No, please no! LOL |
15:17 |
|
Lindal Kidd cackles evilly |
15:17 |
Phrynne |
I'll look at them if you want, Lindal. |

Lindal Kidd nods |

Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No good deed goes "unpunished". ;) |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything else? |
15:18 |
Lindal Kidd |
nope. 30. |
15:18 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Are we making unpuns now? |

Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Smiles at Lindal and Phrynne's 30's. |
15:19 |
Phrynne |
Doesn't Word get to say anything? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yep. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not long. I've continued on with scripting for the CATs and the schedule. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Looked over some nuances of Javascript to add further search capabilities to our "incident" manager. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and, been reading up on "appliers" and applier scripts following a class suggestion we received. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(and some of the arguments involved and a proposed standard) |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's pretty much it, for the week. Open for questions now. |
15:24 |
Jackson Drechsler |
In land option settings, what does "Object entry" do? |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Basically can allow or prohibit already rezzed objects from entering the parcel. |
15:26 |
Jackson Drechsler |
if not work by avatar? |
15:26 |
Jackson Drechsler |
worn* |
15:27 |
Lindal Kidd |
It does not stop worn objects. Someone can come in and drop an object. |
15:27 |
Phrynne |
Shouldn't it return a dropped object? |
15:27 |
Lindal Kidd |
that's handled by parcel autoreturn, I believe |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And it has a couple of levels, whether everyone or only group member owned objects can enter. |
15:27 |
Jackson Drechsler |
ok |
15:28 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
Which option do I have to set where, so no outsider can look at people inside my parcel? |
15:28 |
Lindal Kidd |
About Land/Options tab, uncheck the box |
15:28 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
Thank you |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's a writeup on managing parcels here: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-your-parcel/ta-p/700113 |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You can also manage sounds crossing parcel lines. |
15:30 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
great - just what I was looking for |
15:30 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
Thank you very very much |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(These are all under the tabs of the "about land" window) |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I believe that one still sees the green dots on the minimap even when the avatars themselves are not visible from outside a parcel. |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
nods |
15:32 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
That's no problem - I can live with that |
15:32 |
Lindal Kidd |
Word, do you know if it would be possible to script the viewer so that you could highlight a person's objects and it would automatically move your camera to them? That would be a cool feature. |
15:33 |
Lindal Kidd |
I spend a lot of time looking for people's lost or misplaced things |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are features in the standard view that are supposed to highlight a person's objects. |
15:33 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
area search in firestorm |
15:33 |
Lindal Kidd |
yes, but that doesn't work if they aren't in your view |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've used that successfully to some extent. |
15:33 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Are you familiar with Build > Pathfinding > Linksets? |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
I've used Linksets as well as Area Search to find prims up a couple thousand meters. |
15:34 |
Lindal Kidd |
I use Area Search, but I haven't tried looking for linksets. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've also got a finder script that works if you have parcel powers. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can take a look at that and then give you a copy. |
15:35 |
Lindal Kidd |
thank you, I'd like that |
15:35 |
Lindal Kidd |
if it's half as good as your translator it will be fantastic |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(I use a hacked version on the library parcel to look for anything that's not JJ Drinkwater's) |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I haven't gotten into private viewer modifications. Simply haven't had world enough and time. |
15:38 |
Lindal Kidd |
Maybe I'll pass it on as a feature request to LL and the Firestorm people |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At least supposedly, if you have parcel powers, use the parcel tool to list those who own things on the sim, and highlight an owner name, it's supposed to highly their objects. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, if it's up overhead somewhere, you don't see it. |
15:40 |
Lindal Kidd |
exactly! |
15:40 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
the linksets trick TPs you too an object. You still have to look up, but it is helpful at times. |
15:41 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'll try that too, Larky. Thanks! |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions? |
15:42 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
linksets trick?? |
15:42 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |

15:42 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
thanks |
15:42 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Ping me after the meeting and I'll try showing you how it works. There's a lot in that window, but I have found it handy sometimes. |
15:42 |
Lindal Kidd |
I have that window open now. Wow, this looks great |
15:43 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Martini showed that to me. |
15:43 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'll try that the next time someone leaves a plane stuck at 3500m |
15:43 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
grin |
15:44 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I learned it because I kept losing my prims when I tried to move them. She showed me out of self-preservation, I suspect! |
15:44 |
ELO (eloelephant) |
lol |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That basically come out of the characterization of objects for pathfinding, including whether they are movable or static. The default categorization may not be accurate on the latter. For example, the Women's dressing room is categorized as movable. That's only true if you consider the floor relative to certain deans. :P |
15:47 |
|
Lindal Kidd stifles a giggle behind her hand |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But the list seems to apply, even if pathfinding isn't enabled on a sim. |

I did, ty much Red. |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |

15:50 |

15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And perhaps. In the sense that if Carl were unavailable, it could become a problem. |

Yes, I'll talk to him about that. |
