Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, this is the Caledon Oxbridge Deans' weekly Question and Answer session. It is open to all and all are welcome (unless they demand to be considered otherwise by their actions). |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's our change to tell you what we've been doing and your chance to ask questions in general. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do capture the chat transcripts and post them. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Do any of the other deans have to rush off? |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
no |
15:05 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
What is the latest information about Project Sansar? Where can I go for real information and not hearsay or speculation? |
15:05 |
Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |
where do you post them |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
They're organized by date, too, if you have a particular one you want to review |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
LeeLee...the LL official blog contains most of the factual information released so far. Inara Pey's blog, "Living in a Modem World" also often carries reliable news about Sansar |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, do you want to start? (thanks Lindal) |
15:07 |
Chezee |
hi all :D |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
The Advent Calendar is rolling along, and doing well, I think |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome Chezee. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
If anyone has problems, contact me directly. |
15:07 |
Chezee |
christmas next week |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, I ascribe most of the increase in tarffic in the last week to the Calendar. It is very popular. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
Also, we now have an ice rink and free skates, in the cottage next to the rink. |
15:08 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
It's been rather popular since it was first announced. I hear lot of good feedback from the gifts |
15:08 |
|
Phrynne prrrrs |
15:08 |
Chezee |
ooouuuuuoooo |
15:08 |
Chezee |
woff |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The "calendar" is a set of boxes, and once out a box is available until the new year. |
15:09 |
Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |
Is there a list with all of the places with things to do and see on campus |
15:09 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Not that I'm aware of, but I'd be happy to create such a list. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's a map on the web, Aylaria was working on a more recent one. |
15:09 |
Chezee |
yeah it shuold be fun |
15:09 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I've been working on a map that documents everything of interest on the campus - though it doesn't include the advent calendar right now |
15:10 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Good idea. |
15:10 |
Chezee |
ooppss damn keyboard |
15:10 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
If you'd like a copy of the work in progres I have, it works rather well! |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
An online, http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/campus_map.php |
15:11 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Been meaning to confer with you and Lindal on that. If I can borrow some time after the Q&A, that'd be lovely |

Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |

Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One thing that's been added at the dock behind the railroad station is a small airship that tours around Oxbridge and back to the dock. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything more Phrynne (btw, Phrynne and Larky (aka Badass) are the Deans of Commons) |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
Nothing more at the moment, thanks. |
15:13 |
Gronk Seriman |
For things to do and see in Caledon, try viditing the Hall of Caledon. |
15:13 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I don't have much to add. Same old, same old. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/admin.php |
15:13 |
Lindal Kidd |
I second Gronk's suggestion. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ms Badass? |
15:14 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I don't have much to add. I've just been doing the routine sorts of paperwork and such. |
15:15 |
Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |
thank you for the map |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What might be called "incident tracking". |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lindal? (who is dean of information) |
15:16 |
Lindal Kidd |
Not much this week, Word. I've been working on an update to the Faculty Kit, and hopefully that will be ready before the end of the year. |
15:16 |
Lindal Kidd |
Most of my time this week has been away from COU, creating winter on my home sim |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Good. Can you mention briefly what the faculty kit is? |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
it's a series of notecards, and some other items. Many of them can be distributed to our visitors, if they have questions |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
others are official policies for the faculty to read and (hopefully) heed |
15:18 |
Lindal Kidd |
lots of the notecards have many helpful landmarks |
15:18 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Some are helpful things for working with people who speak different languages, or tools for the average tutor/dean/professor to use |
15:19 |
|
Lindal Kidd nods |
15:19 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Ther'es a lot of brilliant stuff in the facultykits |
15:19 |
Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |
I would like one when they are ready. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Including foreign language help areas (although the Spanish one moves quickly from loc to loc) |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Generally, the Faculty kit is for staff, Ms. ImaLuckygirl |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
It contains tools and information for us to do our work here. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But the distribution folder can be given. |
15:19 |
Ima Luckygirl (imaluckygirl) |
oh! ok |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ask back after the first of the year. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything more, Lindal? |
15:20 |
Lindal Kidd |
that's all, Word |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
ty |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
My stuff for the week. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Samm had nudged Tali Rosca about the new two-week scheduling interface. Other than minor things that might arise, Tali now has that interface functioning and I'm adapting the schedule, catalog, and class tracker to that. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One aspect is we will now cache the schedule JSON files (two weeks) on our website. When I query Tali's interface I also send a key (aka eTag). If the eTag matches the lastest schedule Tali has, her interface sends back a status of 304 (no change), otherwise she sends back the full schedule. This will minimize depands on the free limit. |
15:25 |
|
Samm Florian waves quietly, so as not t'interrupt. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've got this aspect working and test. For the class tracker inworld, I summarize just for the day, and the LSL script grabs that summary so it knows when classes should occur and who is teaching them. |
15:26 |
|
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) hollers out HIIIIIIIIII SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMM >.> |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What that summary looks like for today is up behind me. |
15:26 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Ms. Rossini, this is a meeting hall, not a playground. Please remember to mind your manners here. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One change from the current process, is we now have a location field. |
15:27 |
|
Lindal Kidd's eyes cross as she tries to read Computerese |
15:27 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Ah, and the location is listed on the schedual! How handy |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's also a couple of field name changes, I've got to do. But this will all be functioning in the next couple of weeks and will turn of the old interface system. |
15:28 |
Samm Florian |
I've got another idea fer a field if yer still open for it. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Unlike now, I'll be able to do more than cancel a "next week" class and don't have to hack the location into the coding. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Want to add more Samm? |
15:29 |
Samm Florian |
I would add a way t'mark a class as "one-time only", with th'default being "every week" |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
BTW Samm and Tali are now my back-ups should I be Mack-Truckized. |
15:30 |
|
Samm Florian pretends t'look confident. |
15:30 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
what a subtle and gentile way to say that, Wordsmith. |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We have the note field now, for special conditions. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They both have access to the respositories on which all of this gets backed up. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Samm continues to impress me as Assist Dean of Education (and Asst shadow dean of engines). |
15:32 |
|
Phrynne looks carefully at Samm's shadow |
15:32 |
Samm Florian |
I'd like t'see one-time classes become more than a "special condition", but somethin' the schedule could handle automatically |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Basically it just needs to not replicate. |
15:33 |
Samm Florian |
Izzit there? I might need t'sew it back on |
15:33 |
|
Alex Godard silently stands, nods to the Deans as he moves to the exit |
15:33 |
Samm Florian |
OK, jes thought I'd mention it |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
Still there. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The upshot is that we'll have more flexibility in managing classes, regular, several session, or one-time. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Samm, you might nudge Tali about a "don't replicate" check box. |
15:35 |
Samm Florian |
'k. :) |
15:36 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
ARe you guys still offering advanced building class or can you recommend to me where I might take something beyond your basic building? |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've been wanting to have "seminars" for a good while. |
15:36 |
cuteandsassy (cuteanddirty) |
sorry im late tho |
15:37 |
Lindal Kidd |
LeeLee, have you visited the Ivory Tower Library of Prims? |
15:37 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
yup |
15:37 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
A couple of time :) |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We don't have one on the schedule at this point. We hope to again. |
15:38 |
Chezee |
it´s a big place |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Are there particular aspects of building you were interested in? |
15:38 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
There's also Builder's Brewery. |
15:38 |
Phrynne |
And Happy Hippo |
15:38 |
Lindal Kidd |
NCI is worth a look too |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Recalcitrant Rhino? |
15:38 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
And Sandie's Clockmaking class is more advanced than Samm's wonderful Hat class. |
15:38 |
Samm Florian |
True. That's a good second class. |
15:38 |
Chezee |
a hippo which is happy....i like that :) |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
I oughta make a syllabus fer an advanced class even if I can't commit t'teachin' it |
15:39 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Mostly I am having trouble with making prims look exactly the same only 'mirrored' ... like if I have one that goes like < and I want one that goes like > I can't really figure that out too well. |
15:39 |
Lindal Kidd |
ooh |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
That's a pretty specific question. :) And it'd depend on th'prim. |
15:39 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
It's kinda easy if you only need to do it on one angle but if you have a rotated prim in more than one angle I get all mixed up. |
15:40 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Well that is what I am interested in learning about :) |
15:40 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
i want to do a basic scripting class myself |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've encountered that also, and cheated by using scripting to rez the prims. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
BTW, Sandie Harbour, who teaches the clock class has messed with that kind of scripting to rez structure. |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It also can be a problem to get things to "look" exactly the same (even if they physically are) because of how SL renders lighting on separate prims. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That does help give me an idea of a specific interest, however. Thanks. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions? |
15:44 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
what would i have to do to teach a scripting class |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Class suggestions? |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Things you would like to see? |
15:45 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
...vehicles..... *ducks* |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
42 |
15:45 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
interactive scripts |
15:46 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
i can do simple things, rotate objects, color changing, etc |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Tell me a bit more about what interactive means to you. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
@azn: If ya could give us a notecard with a proposed outline for th'course, that'd be a good start. |
15:46 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
ok. if anyone has suggestions on what they would like to learn that would be great |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or just jotted down interests. |
15:47 |
Lindal Kidd |
I have a basic Sailing class about half completed. I'll get back to it when the water thaws out. :) |
15:47 |
Samm Florian |
Neat! |
15:48 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
I will let you know if I think of anything else I want to learn. |
15:48 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Actually a class that would be useful is a class in how to use the LL viewer. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And for teaching a class, jot down a proposal for a class, what skills you have that would enable you to teach it and send it to Samm and myself. |
15:48 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
i just started making objects move around on their own. that's fun |
15:48 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Like there are Firestorm classes. Ther eneeds to be LL viewer classes |
15:49 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Tutorial is based on the official viewer |
15:49 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
ok Jarvis |
15:49 |
Lindal Kidd |
Mr Skysmith beat me to it! |
15:49 |
Samm Florian |
We have a Firestorm class? |
15:49 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
jarvin sorry |
15:49 |
Lindal Kidd |
no, but the Firestorm group does |
15:49 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Samm, nope, Firestorm support does Firestrom classes. |
15:50 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
A bunch of them. |
15:50 |
Samm Florian |
Oh ok. |
15:50 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
I just think a lot of things are being missed in the LL viewer. It's a lot better than some give it credit for, you just have to get to things in a kind of convoluted way. |
15:51 |
azn min alnnufus (itoibo) |
like having to go to a location jst to save it in your places? |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's also the viewer that LL sends people inworld with. |
15:53 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
I'm not sure what to recommend to teach about it. LIke "this is how you start a group chat. this is how you start a conference call. this is what you do when you need to block someone .." just basic viewer functions. it's good to be talked t hrough it |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions? |

No worries. I keep sweeping the platforms clean of snow and leaves to keep them ready. :_) |
15:55 |
Chezee |
woff woff ggr |
15:55 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Samm, exactly. Or things you do know but maybe there are fast3er ways to do it .. |
15:55 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
Well thank you for the Q&A I am going to go to one of thsoe Firestorm classes now :) |
15:55 |
Samm Florian |
That would be great as a blog, actually. :) |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk Journey well, thanks for coming. |
15:56 |
Lindal Kidd |
I think Torley's videos are a good resource for that sort of thing |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Samm has a page of collected class ideas. |
15:57 |
Samm Florian |
http://samm.nfshost.com/Oxbridge/ right now. Best add some though… |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That, hopefully, short of another crisis, we can start implementing. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(the deans suffer from a limited elasticity index) |
15:59 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) streeeettttccchhhhes and moans like a sleepy cat. |
