Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2015-12-06

15:04 Wordsmith Jarvinen That was an interesting act of staff togetherness, Lindal.
15:04 Lindal Kidd no, it was a case of hit the wrong button-ness
15:04 Phrynne lol
15:04 Wordsmith Jarvinen Welcome to the weekly Q&A everyone. Many thanks for attending.
15:04 Brian (mannadrop) warms my heart to see such closeness
15:04 Phrynne I didn't think my perfume was quite that come-hither
15:05 Phrynne *ahem*
15:05 Wordsmith Jarvinen Any of the deans likely to need to rush off?
15:05 Phrynne no
15:05 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Not unless Auntie Esmerelda sees her paramour in the plaza!
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen heh!
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen Let's start then with Lindal. Anything from Information?
15:06 Lindal Kidd Phrynne tells us that the French help area isn't very helpful any more
15:07 Lindal Kidd thank you, Phrynne!
15:07 Lindal Kidd also
15:07 Lindal Kidd I have made these posters
15:07 Lindal Kidd in full color and lovely antique sepia tone
15:08 Lindal Kidd they give out COU landmarks on touch
15:08 Lindal Kidd I will send them to the staff via Notice
15:08 Wordsmith Jarvinen Any specific targets or events in mind for them?
15:09 Crystal Edelmann We could put one in the Builders Corner if you'd like.
15:09 Lindal Kidd the trigger event was an inquiry from a nice lady with a young persons' help area
15:09 Lindal Kidd but they can be placed anywhere
15:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen And nicely catch the sense of the place.
15:11 Wordsmith Jarvinen I noticed someone asking for G-rated sandboxes earlier. I know we have a list of sims, but a list of sandboxes (that are both G and monitored) would be nice.
15:11 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I like them, but may I suggest that the lettering on the sepia one be a bit darker? It is difficult to read.
15:11 Lindal Kidd ty Larky. I'll fix it
15:12 Lindal Kidd we do have a list of G rated sandboxes
15:12 Lindal Kidd it does not say whether they are monitored or not
15:12 Wordsmith Jarvinen That's already in the faculty kit?
15:13 Lindal Kidd the list is in a giver prim by the sandbox teleport pad in the plaza
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen Okay. Thanks. Anything else?
15:13 Lindal Kidd nope, that's all from me!
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen On to the Deans of Common (in common). Phrynne?
15:14 Phrynne I have a few things-- first, it's officially winter, so you may see a few different trees and shrubs around the campus
15:15 Phrynne I am still decorating -- not done yet. Also, we are working on getting a skating rink set up but that is not ready at the moment.
15:15 Phrynne Second, the Advent Calendar is open -- and appears to be a huge success.
15:15 Phrynne We have three to four times as many people coming to campus as usual.
15:15 Badass Fae (larkylouz) We're getting lots of extra traffic for it!
15:15 Brian (mannadrop) I've already had many many compliments in it from visitors
15:15 Brian (mannadrop) *on it
15:16 Phrynne And a great deal of this is because it is listed in FabFree's blog listing of Advent Calendars: https://fabfree.wordpress.com/december-advents-2014/
15:16 Phrynne so we are seeing people who had no idea Oxbridge existed before, who show up and explore and look us over.
15:16 Phrynne I think it will bring us more people in the next year, from referrals, and more people to come to classes.
15:17 Phrynne And I am very grateful to all the generous and creative people who spent time and effort making and donating gifts to be given away.
15:17 Phrynne However -- sometimes SL has lag and has other problems.
15:18 Phrynne If you hear of anyone on Oxbridge chat or in Oxbridge, who is having trouble getting the gifts out of the boxes, please ask them to contact me directly and I will make sure they have them.
15:18 Phrynne And that's all.
15:18 Badass Fae (larkylouz) looks down to her lap, then looks meekly out at the audience.
15:19 Wordsmith Jarvinen Worth mentioning that you've taken an unconventional approach to keeping things available for the month, once out.
15:19 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I am afraid I have nothing to report. You see, Auntie Esmerelda has met a man, and oh, such a man. The Florid Brazilian is keeping her awake nights.
15:19 Badass Fae (larkylouz) sigh
15:19 Phrynne Yes -- I know from experience how frustrating it is to miss the Big Thing (whatever it is) by one day. Some shops are charging for other days than the current one, but I think the gifts should just be available.
15:19 Wordsmith Jarvinen So the advent "Calendar" is an accumulating set of boxes.
15:19 Phrynne yes
15:20 Phrynne they will start to pile up into a recognizable shape by later this week
15:20 Dusty (dustybunns) Oh tannenbaum
15:20 Phrynne ja vohl!
15:21 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, Auntie (Badass) Esmerelda, I don't know what to say other than to remember that Oxbridge is a G-rated sim. :P
15:21 Brian (mannadrop) Horray for Auntie Esmeralda
15:21 Badass Fae (larkylouz) blushes mightily.
15:22 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Mentions that she has a few private places tucked away should you need them
15:22 Brian (mannadrop) maybe the suave Brazilian will soften her caning a bit
15:22 Brian (mannadrop) :D
15:22 Wordsmith Jarvinen Or inspire it.
15:22 Brian (mannadrop) good point
15:22 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) Ja wohl!
15:23 Phrynne well, Auntie's friend is very well-spoken and says good things about Oxbridge to people, too :)
15:23 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Yes. We are all angels, princesses and Queens. He's most generous
15:23 Wordsmith Jarvinen Good for taking a bit of the chill off of winter.
15:23 Badass Fae (larkylouz) I'm finished. (in more ways than one)
15:25 Wordsmith Jarvinen Mostly procedural for me. I'd asked Samm to ping (aka nag) Tali a bit. The result is a beta version of the new scheduling interface she's been working on. It's basically a two week schedule with a separate list of lecture that can be placed on the schedule.
15:26 Wordsmith Jarvinen The scheduling also has week to week persistence.
15:26 Badass Fae (larkylouz) persistence?
15:26 Dusty (dustybunns) weak persistance
15:26 Badass Fae (larkylouz) It stays the same until you edit it?
15:27 Wordsmith Jarvinen So Samm and I can look that over and Tali has placed the source on our group Git repository on Bitbucket.
15:27 Wordsmith Jarvinen Right. The lectures aren't inherently tied to a time and day but the scheduling will copy from week to week unless changed.
15:28 Wordsmith Jarvinen So it means actually being able to schedule for two weeks rather than just being able to add a cancel for the second week.
15:29 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Great!
15:29 Wordsmith Jarvinen A couple of tweaks are needed, but nothing major.
15:30 Lindal Kidd I had a question today about Professor Charisma's roleplaying class...it's not shown on the schedule boards, but is in the event calendar. Is it on?
15:30 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Many people have actually asked about it and roleplaying class in general.
15:30 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) she was here last week?
15:30 Lindal Kidd yes
15:31 Wordsmith Jarvinen As far as I know, but she wasn't in place last night or two weeks ago.
15:31 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Yes, I caught some enterprising students trying to teach themselves. Unfortunately, it isn't a class where I can just wing it.
15:31 Wordsmith Jarvinen It is up on the calendar here. 7pm Fridays.
15:31 Lindal Kidd snickers
15:32 Lindal Kidd ("enterprising students " :)))
15:32 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, as far as I know, it is shown on all the schedule kiosks.
15:33 Lindal Kidd aha! I missed it. There it is!!
15:33 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Actually, they were sweet. They weren't doing anything wrong.
15:33 Wordsmith Jarvinen Time change from when it used to be.
15:34 Wordsmith Jarvinen One other surprise for Phrynne. She asked for a more general means of searching our "incident" tracker.
15:35 Phrynne oh?
15:35 Phrynne great!
15:35 Wordsmith Jarvinen Up behind me I have the lexical analyzer (text to tokens) tested for a search much like Medline
15:37 Wordsmith Jarvinen So either words or quoted strings, optionally followed by a field specifier in square brackets, and combined by AND, OR, NOT and parenthesis.
15:37 Wordsmith Jarvinen The parser that implements it comes next.
15:38 Wordsmith Jarvinen In the example, UN stands for user name and RD for rez-date.
15:39 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, part-way there, Phrynne.
15:39 Phrynne that's great.
15:39 Phrynne thank you!
15:39 Badass Fae (larkylouz) :^)
15:39 Wordsmith Jarvinen And Samm is here.
15:40 Phrynne waves to Samm
15:40 Samm Florian waves discreetly
15:40 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) yay sammy
15:40 Samm Florian Probly hafta leave fer dinner at any minute.
15:40 Wordsmith Jarvinen Anything you wish to report quickly then?
15:40 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Hey Samm
15:40 Wordsmith Jarvinen Successful schedule interface nagging?
15:41 Samm Florian Tali let me see th'code for th'Oxbridge website and I discovered I weren't as much of a programmer as I thought I was…
15:41 Samm Florian grins.
15:41 Samm Florian But nuthin' to report, no.
15:42 Wordsmith Jarvinen Tali relies on a number of Javascript libraries That simplify use and manage "packages".
15:43 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, open for questions.
15:43 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) announc3ement
15:43 Wordsmith Jarvinen That too.
15:43 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) The mist of Winterfell and several other homesteads in that sim will be closing soon. The mists will be cleared tonight. So if you wanted to see it for one last time. Tonight is it.
15:43 Wordsmith Jarvinen Awww.
15:43 Lindal Kidd :(
15:44 Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) Will we still connect?
15:44 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) no
15:44 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) the ferry will stop as welll
15:44 Phrynne so it will be impossible to sail or fly to Winterfell any more :(
15:44 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) That will be up to des I believe
15:45 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Hourbour and arora will be closing as well
15:45 Phrynne Unless someone up there moves a region south to connect...
15:45 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) so no more sailing on those
15:45 Lindal Kidd If Europa could move to the east...
15:46 Wordsmith Jarvinen I guess we'll have to see if they can reorganize land to keep the connection, but sad to hear of the loss of sims and yet sadder if the connection is lost.
15:47 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Nods they were newer homesteads and the costs th lindends put onthem made them unaffordable
15:47 Samm Florian If th'relocation cost is a problem, folks might chip in t'keep the connection.
15:47 Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) Mieville(sp?) closed some sims as well.
15:48 Samm Florian Who owns Europa? Wulfenbach?
15:48 Phrynne Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, I think
15:49 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thanks for that notice, Andrea. I may have to ply the skies on an aether-board tonight.
15:49 Wordsmith Jarvinen Other announcements/questions?
15:49 Brian (mannadrop) Chancellor, if I might?
15:50 Wordsmith Jarvinen Brian, you might and you may.
15:50 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) With all your might
15:50 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) might does does not make right
15:50 Brian (mannadrop) I have had a couple of questions I have posed to several of the staff here about the staff od instruction in Oxbridge
15:51 Brian (mannadrop) the gist being that I wonder if there shouldn't be some apprentice instructors in Oxbridge
15:52 Brian (mannadrop) I have talked to several people, and there seems to be some interest, both from the instructors(who are exhausted) and some of the more knowledgable tutors
15:52 Wordsmith Jarvinen At one point, some tutors gained experience and skills and took on instructing.
15:53 Badass Fae (larkylouz) That's when I started teaching. The photography instructor needed to quit teaching, and I took over for her.
15:54 Brian (mannadrop) I would have little idea how to proceed, and I suppose it isn't my place to, but I wondered what would need to transpire to move it forward?
15:54 Wordsmith Jarvinen Others were knowledgeable, could organize a proposal, and were consistent with Caledon culture.
15:54 Lindal Kidd Word, may I comment on this?
15:54 Samm Florian has t'go, sorry. Good idea though.
15:54 Wordsmith Jarvinen Of course, Lindal.
15:54 Badass Fae (larkylouz) g'night Samm
15:55 Lindal Kidd I teach three of our classes. I'm sure any of our professors or tutors could teach them too, but not coming in cold
15:55 Lindal Kidd I would be happy to have anyone sit in on the classes, and give them the script and the materials
15:55 Camden McAndrews What does it mean to be consistent with Caledon culture?
15:56 Brian (mannadrop) I honestly think Dean Kidd's comment would be the only way to proceed
15:56 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, let's go direct to the Caledon motto, which translates to Civility, Tolerance, Innovation, Cake.
15:56 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) cakes? looks around
15:57 Brian (mannadrop) there would have to be some training time for that specific class, or it would end badly I believe. It would be okay right up to the point that a student asked a question
15:57 Wordsmith Jarvinen And the Oxbridge perspective that classes are given for the benefit of the students.
15:57 Gronk Seriman Cake being a Virtue matching the importance of the other three.
15:57 Badass Fae (larkylouz) That's definitely the hard part, Brian
15:57 Brian (mannadrop) agreed
15:58 Brian (mannadrop) That is why I suggested is as more of an apprenticeship approach
15:58 Lindal Kidd I think a three step process. Prospective teacher audits the class, gets the materials. Prospective teacher teaches the class, with the Professor there as backup. Prospective teacher teaches the class solo.
15:58 Wordsmith Jarvinen Oxbridge does not enforce Victorian garb -- we're more like a space port.
15:59 Brian (mannadrop) let the apprentice learn and teach under the guidance of the sitting instructor for a time, until that instructor felt comfortable truning them loose
15:59 Lindal Kidd nods
16:00 Camden McAndrews I was curious because I used to teach in SL. I taught my own classes, though; don't know if I could teach to someone else's lesson plan.
16:01 Gronk Seriman smiles. Heard the clock chime properly.
16:01 Wordsmith Jarvinen We have room for those who create classes.
16:01 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Samm has a list of ideas for other kind of classes.
16:01 Brian (mannadrop) I don;t see that it would have to be someone else's lesson plan so long as it was approved by the Chancellor
16:01 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) And I still kind of miss the vehicle class. And no, I cannot teach that....
16:03 Camden McAndrews Some folks were asking for a class on MLP in the MLPv2 group just yesterday. I don't know if the audience justifies the effort to develop the courseware, though.
16:03 Gronk Seriman The Atelier goes wanting for classes, too.
16:03 Wordsmith Jarvinen So, I'm happy to encourage an apprentice program, which also provides a back-up program. I'm also willing to consider proposals outside of that, from seminars to weekly classes (and the new interface when it's up will make that a lot simpler).
16:04 Camden McAndrews New interface?
16:04 Wordsmith Jarvinen And we had a suggestion for a skin applicator class (which had me thinking of repairing surfboards).
16:05 Wordsmith Jarvinen For scheduling on a two-week basis.
16:05 Brian (mannadrop) That ends my question. I simply wanted to get a dialog started and wheels turning
16:05 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I did meet one guy who asked me how to make skins. Unfortunately I could not help him...
16:06 Badass Fae (larkylouz) It takes quite an artist to make a good skin....
16:06 Phrynne I think those are mostly made offline.
16:07 Wordsmith Jarvinen What I don't want are instructor's who see Oxbridge classes as just another means of marketing something.
16:07 Badass Fae (larkylouz) yes
16:07 Phrynne agreed
16:07 Camden McAndrews Is there a way to get some survey data on whether enough folks would be interested in a topic to make it worth the time to develop a class? It can take a couple of hundred hours to get all the courseware ready, so to do that for a single one-hour session can be discouraging.
16:07 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) so no doit yourself head replacement kits.
16:07 Dusty (dustybunns) If he/she googles for Eloh Elliot he/she will get some do-it-yourself info and files
16:08 Wordsmith Jarvinen Right, her PSD files are available freely. They layers in them are a sizeable instruction in creating skin by themselves.
16:09 Wordsmith Jarvinen *the layers in them.
16:09 Brian (mannadrop) I agree. The integrity of the curriculum should me of first importance, regardless of who teaches it.
16:09 Brian (mannadrop) *me=be
16:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen We don't however preclude tip jars and we do give a slight stipend per class taught (which I need to catch up on again).
16:10 Camden McAndrews Oh, good point about wanting to teach versus using the school as a means for promoting a commercial business.
16:11 Wordsmith Jarvinen And what Brian stated as "the integrity of the curriculum" is also part of what I lumped under culture.
16:11 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Jujue gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
16:12 Wordsmith Jarvinen And, we still need to come by a Dean of Development and a Dean of Engines.
16:13 Camden McAndrews What would those deans do?
16:13 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Dean of Development is fundraising
16:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen I've been doubling as the latter as well as Education, and in a sense camp counselor.
16:13 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Dean of Engines is scripting
16:13 Dusty (dustybunns) Engines in infrastructure scripting
16:14 Lindal Kidd Help Wanted: Computer Nerd
16:14 Wordsmith Jarvinen Oh, and webmaster.
16:14 Camden McAndrews Fund-raising definitely is not my strong suit. I have only broken even in one month in Second Life, out of all the years I've been here. :)
16:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen (is the other part I cover). And we could use an editor to further the Oxbridge Guardian..
16:16 Badass Fae (larkylouz) There was someone in ISC the other night wanting to start a newspaper.... Anyone remember who? Raymond or something like that?
16:16 Wordsmith Jarvinen One was started for Caledon not long ago.
16:16 Phrynne David Raymondson was the one in ISC
16:17 Wordsmith Jarvinen I think Samm knows more about that.
16:17 Lindal Kidd David Raymondson
16:17 Lindal Kidd aw, Phrynne beat me to it
16:17 Wordsmith Jarvinen kk Thanks.
16:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, we've run over a bit. Any last quick question?
16:18 Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) But listed as in Hiatus.
16:18 Camden McAndrews Thanks, folks! Lots of food for thought there.
16:18 Brian (mannadrop) unfortunately RL is dragging me back kicking and screaming, but anything I can do to assist, as always, if it is in my power, all you need do is ask
16:18 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Dusty (dustybunns) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
16:18 Brian (mannadrop) bye
16:18 Badass Fae (larkylouz) Thanks for coming, everyone! Be safe and have fun!
16:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thank you all for coming and participating.
16:18 Lindal Kidd in that order
16:19 Dusty (dustybunns) ty deans
16:19 Gronk Seriman Thank you, Deans!
16:19 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Gronk Seriman gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
16:19 Lindal Kidd whew. Off I go, dragged by RL
