Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The is the Oxbridge Deans' weekly Q&A. Our opportunity to report -- your opportunity to ask questions re Oxbridge, SL, and beyond. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, all. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lindal let's start with you, since your time is limited. |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
thanks! |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
from our point of view, one change this week is that LL has opened all 8 Social Islands to residents |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
I've provided a set of landmarks to the staff via a notecard |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That' |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
also, for you would be land barons |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's weird. |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
what about land barons? |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
the cost of setting up a private sim has been decreased by 40% |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
oh, I follow. Okay |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
from $1000, now it's $650 |
15:06 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
O.) |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
Homesteads and OpenSpace sims are also reduced |
15:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
Wow! |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
and grandfathering can now be transferred |
15:07 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
wonders aboutthat whole where amber was |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
although you'll have to pay $650 up front to get it |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
I've updated my classes in several minor ways to incorporate these changes and other new information |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hmm... I wonder if they are getting nervous about a too-quick exodus from the cash cow (SL) to the unproven property (SL2/Sansar). |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
and I'll be looking at the tutorial posters to see what needs changing there |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
that's all from Information, Carl :) |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, decreases in the rates to acquire a sim, but apart from grandfathering, tier rates stay the same? |
15:10 |
Lindal Kidd |
correct |
15:10 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Hmm my own sim....... |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please don't pull all your land out from Caledon at once, Andrea :) |
15:11 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
andreas world, come at your own risk. |
15:11 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
lol |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Deans of common, what have ye this day? |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
I have been venturing in the far land of Real Life this week, so I come without a report. |
15:12 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Well, with a lot of help from Word and Phrynne, we got out a revised Tutor Guidelines document, which should ease some of the confusion with all the changes. As always, I'm very open to comments, questions, suggested edits. |
15:13 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Most of my focus this week has been on that. |
15:13 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Hi Beccha! |
15:13 |
Beccha |
Hello Larky |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything else? |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have been out this week |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As some of you may know, my father has been very ill since late August |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He come down with a very bad case of West Nile virus--a neuroinvasive case. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Out with good reason. |
15:15 |
Gronk Seriman |
ooo. |
15:15 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
My condolences. Lost my father more than twenty years ago. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I hope he continues to recover well. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He had been recovering and moved to a rehab hospital, but last Monday became ill and had trouble breathing. He was transfered back to the main hospital for Fort Worth, and diagnosed with pneumonia caused by MRSA. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He has been in intensive care all week and on heavy antibiotics (there are still some that work against MRSA). |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The good news is that he appears to be recovering now. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was able to talk to him a bit this afternoon |
15:17 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
Good! |
15:17 |
Phrynne |
that's very good |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Good. |
15:17 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Good |
15:17 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I'm glad, Carl |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am hoping I will be in world a lot more this week |
15:17 |
Beccha |
good to hear |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Take what time you need, Carl. Such RL matters come first. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was just mentally unable to deal with the extra stress of Oxbridge (on top of RL job) last week. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm sorry. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's all for me. |
15:18 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) looks sideways at Carl and promises she didn't eject anyone. ;^) |
15:18 |
|
Beccha smiles to Larky |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A bit of a scattered week for me. Partly writing on and editing the new guidelines, partly reassuring staff. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Working on a minor glitch in the now media responsive website affecting the pop-up class descriptions. This shouldn't affect smart phones (no scroll bars) or full-size windows. |
15:21 |
Lindal Kidd |
RL calls! My apologies for fleeing precipitately! |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A little attention to the CATs, looking at information on the dynamic directory name server that Kaluura Boa set up. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
tc Lindal. |
15:22 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I noticed that I received some CATs departure messages... |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You would if you are close enough to the landing point. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As I recall those are whispered into local chat. (the current vehicle being the Caledon Oxbridge Little Testship, or COLT). |
15:24 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I was in a skybox. |
15:24 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
over the old trainstation lot by the moutnain |
15:24 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) grins at the acronym |
15:24 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
perhaps there is a old link there |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No idea at all then, since the fleet CATs aren't running yet, and the COLT just whispers. Sometimes SL is just strange. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Maybe we could adapt COLT to give tours of Oxbridge after the test run? |
15:26 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
great, the reading room is in the twilight zone. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Caledon Oxbridge Little Tourship |
15:26 |
Gronk Seriman |
"Ghost Airships in the Skyyyyy!" |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, I hadn't originally through of that, but the little ship touring Oxbridge has rather caught on. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No sense discontinuing something that's become a enjoyable feature. |
15:29 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
How will that affect prims when the cats are running again? |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's it for reports. We're open to questions. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The CATs never routed into Oxbridge. The submarines do. The current testship isn't many prims (6, I believe). We can keep any replacement low prim. |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
I thought they landed behind the train station |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
guess i wasn'tpaying attention |
15:32 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
The subs do. Not the CATS |
15:32 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Never saw the subs |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's were I decided to land the test ship, but the CATs have the fancy landing points. |
15:32 |
Phrynne |
They haven't been there for a while |
15:33 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Subs also sometimes went through the entrnace hall... |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the lecture hall. |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
so did the train, a few times. |
15:33 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And multiplied behind lecture hall. |
15:34 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
I saw that once |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Much of the recoding for the CATs is applicable to the subs. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, CATs first, then subs. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And for any that haven't a clue what we're about, CAT stands for Caledon Air Transport, and are large, beautiful airships that in the past could transport one throughout Caledon. |
15:39 |
Gronk Seriman |
The tall CATS Staion in Oxbridge Village was one of the stations. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's not strictly an Oxbridge project and it's not that I'm short of things to do, but the system has a definite affect on the feel of Caledon as a place and thus of Oxbridge itself. There simply should be airships in the sky. |
15:40 |
Gronk Seriman |
And the one beneath Steam Cloud City. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And a few more. |
15:41 |
Phrynne |
The route map that is in the Railroad Station will need to be updated, eventually. |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The routes themselves as well as the route maker/recorder will have to be updated. |
15:42 |
Gronk Seriman |
Does Steam Sky City still have the ornate station it used to have? Or was it lost in the downsizing? |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, it has a very nice station. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's at the center of the SSC |
15:43 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah. Good! |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Jorge Serapis has the parts. The problem has been with the scripts and the routes. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions? |
15:45 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
could this system you have developed be used to rebuild the horse carriage nthe village? |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, perhaps the routing and monitoring parts. |
15:46 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
nods |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The horses themselves could not be done with fewer mesh pieces. |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, yes, but then scripting of the gait cycle as well as the pieces. |
15:49 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Quadripedic animations needed |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's certainly doable. |
15:50 |
Phrynne |
Would it be possible to animate a rezzed horse avatar? |
15:50 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
something for much later then. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The original horse and carriages are lost sadly. The creator has left Second Life. |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
I guess the hope that the buggies went to Des's item return bucket has faded away. |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Those were 56 prims, BTW. |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They weren't owned by Des, so they didn't return to him. |
15:51 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah. |
15:52 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
A vendor has a horse to pull wagons. I'll look it up. I have their slaigh and reindeer. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks. |
15:54 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
No landmark. The name is "Out on a whim". |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I may also talk with Red about the animation, but it has to come down to emulating what horses actually do (pacers versus trotters, for example). |
15:55 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
The sleigh can be set to owner or public acsses. |
15:55 |
Phrynne |
I think you could assume trotting -- pacing is fairly rare. |
15:56 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Standardbreds pace. Also gaited horses like Tennessee walkers. (I've ridden a pace. Like a camel, I imagine) So it is not so odd to have a harness horse pace. |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One of those subtleties of whether the horse uses both legs on a side at the same time or diagonal pairs. |
15:57 |
Phrynne |
It would be smoother for the people in the carriage if the horse doesn't lurch from side to side. :) |
15:57 |
|
Wordsmith Jarvinen Smiles and thinks ebil thoughts. |
15:58 |
Thunderstone (jeffrey0thunderstone) |
Camels are evil. One bit me and the owner wipped me for not giving in to extosion. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
https://bigpicturereport.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/cartoon.jpg |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other quick questions? |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
? |
15:59 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
LOL Word |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Just inspired by considerations of smoothness ..... or not. (grins) |
16:01 |
|
Beccha laughs |
16:01 |
Beccha |
that is evil |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, yes, but better than no horses and carriages. |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If there aren't other questions, then it seems time to adjourn. |
16:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we make new ones, we need to sample the clopping coconut sound from The Holy Grail for the sound of the horses :) |
16:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
Pf course! |
16:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, and can get into entire discussions about how they got here. |
16:03 |
Phrynne |
by swallow, of course |
16:03 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And there was much rejoicing |
16:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
African or European? |
16:03 |
Agatha Macbeth |
European or African? |
16:04 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Snap |
16:04 |
Gronk Seriman |
heehee! |
16:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And thus, thank you all for coming and for those new to this also welcome to the Caledonian sense of humor. |
16:05 |
|
Beccha smiles |
16:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Please don't panic and keep track of your towel. |
16:05 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you for coming, everyone! |
16:06 |
Gronk Seriman |
I love the story behind that. They assumed they would all have horses. But when the budget for the film said otherwise, they had to think fast |
16:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
BEdtime for me. |
16:06 |
Phrynne |
good night, Mr. Elfbiter |
16:06 |
Agatha Macbeth |
Much like the balloons in the Prisoner |
16:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Goodnight |
16:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
take care all |
16:06 |
Beccha |
Good night every one |
16:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
Good night! |
