14:59 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
this is the Deans' Q&A. Part staff meeting (open to the community) and part time for all of you to ask questions |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was trying to upload that chart |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But for some reason nothing I'm uploading is showing up as texture. |
15:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I see the chart. |
15:01 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, so do I |
15:01 |
Satanico Marquis |
yes |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh good |
15:01 |
Flameless |
If you're on the stage i cant see you. |
15:01 |
Satanico Marquis |
Carl needs some new glasses |
15:01 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
it shows on both sides of the prim |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We are on stage. Sometimes things are slow to appear. Sometimes a relog helps. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The big news for this week (even bigger than my experiment in minimal policing) is that "Newcomer traffic took an astonishing leap last week. The First-Day count climbed 91% to 323 from 169, while the broader First-Week rose 44% to 483 from 335. This abrupt change makes me suspect that the Lindens have tweaked their intake process once again." (Marion Questi) |
15:02 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
who is flameless? Are they here or down below? |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See chart behind us |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That everyone can see but me. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will just have to have faith |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the actual meeting is being held in the alternate lecture hall in Village. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Caledon Oxbridge Village (14,171,2003) |
15:04 |
Gronk Seriman |
I met Flameless, a small dragon, just before comming up here. I don't see Flameless here now.... |
15:05 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
She may have been downstairs. I IM'd her and asked if she wanted a TP; she's now far away, I guess. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will start with a report from me today. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First off, we are conducting an experiment in minimal "policing". We are only banning and ejecting clear cases of griefing. This does not mean we should not be ARing people who break LL's G-region rules; we can and we should. We should also consider using any lower-threat jerks as a way to teach new users how to file ARs and use their Mute options. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We had an uptick in bad behavior this week. It may be related to relaxing enforcement, or it may be related to the doubling (apx.) of new users. We will have to keep an eye on things. |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which we are also doing. |
15:10 |
Cross-Sim Repeater End |
Now transmitting local chat. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The reason we are doing this, is that even though Oxbridge is a Duchy like all the rest, and we pay our own tier, lots of people perceive us as part of "official" Caledon. We are in an ambiguous situation. Thus what we do, reflects on Desmond. Sadly, some of our rules enforcement, has caused Desmond blowback. He is concerned that he is likely to lose significant rentals if we are too strict on the wrong person. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This matters because Caledon rentals are part of Desmond's RL income. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They are helping put his kids through college. |
15:11 |
Samm Florian |
Or more to th'point, Des doesn't wanna hafta have negative income from payin' to keep sims open that don't have enough renters. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But close enough of a balance that the flow can also go the wrong way. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thus I have to take his worries seriously. He has had stuff like this happen in the past (not related to Oxbridge) where the wrong person said the wrong thing to the wrong person and he had a chain reaction where he had to drop multiple sims from loss of renters. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This sucks for everyone on all sides. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What I am hoping, is that the lower level jerks can be contained by ARs/Mutes/just ignoring them, while we concentrate on active griefing. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope--and I have no proof this will work long term--that we can spend less time on enforcement and more time helping new people. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We will see. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hiya, Samm. |
15:13 |
Samm Florian |
Hi! |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I appreciate how much work all the helpers and staff have done with tempers on edge from the extra stress. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. End of my bit. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's go over to Larky for Commons. |
15:15 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Please, everyone. focus on keepiong Oxbridge going and try not to get into ranting in public about what you think of all of this. I know we all need to vent (Larky is very greatful for Wordsmith), but please don't do it in the middle of the Commons. And give this a chance. We want and need all of you. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I've spent most of the week putting out fires and trying to deal with my own stress and that of my co-workers. Phrynne is taking a break, but she has continued to work on the Advent Calendar when she has time. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
As for the new avatars, the biggest problem I have found with them is that I'll put on a shirt, and my pants take off for Tahiti. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
The fix seems to be to ADD rather than WEAR, if you're having problems. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
To join Darwin? |
15:17 |
Samm Florian |
Eep! |
15:17 |
Agatha Macbeth |
0.0 |
15:17 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
To join Darwin? |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
My announcement noted that on this date in 1835, Darwin reach Tahiti. |
15:18 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Ah, yes. You *are* the one who gave my pants that idea, yes. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
A lot of new user nudity is accidental |
15:18 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Even before the new avis. Probably the issue I help people with most often |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know that LL's G-rated rules prohibit it, but I think they don't take into account the learning curve for avatars. Please try to direct them to the changing rooms. |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I think that's it for me. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith? |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Oh, absolutely, Carl. And we do help people right in the middle of campus, if we have to. Just part of the agony of being a newbie. :( |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Partly a week of some hours of discussion over what Des has seen in complaints, versus what we log in terms of actions taken, versus specifics of when we take actions. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
An example being that if an avatar is disrupting a class, apart from just being there, we will take an action. Similarly with verbal or physical abuse that is not momentary and not accidental. |
15:22 |
Samm Florian |
We can eject class-disrupters from th'lecture hall, then? I was wonderin'. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, if you're on staff, don't just block a person, because you then can't hear what's being said to others. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If we don't we may as well wrap the class whenever there's a disrupter. |
15:23 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
No, but I do recommend teaching bystanders to block, as an alternative to other possible actions |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But the purpose is to protect the class, not to keep the disrupter out of the sim over a longer term. |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
We don't want to encourage the Heckler's Veto. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Desmond believes that a lot of the griefers are kids who get encouraged by our interactions with them. He may be correct. That's part of what we are trying to find out. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But this experiment in minimal enforcement also launched during a week that LL decided to double our traffic. They hate us. That's the only explanation. |
15:25 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
This is news? |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The other piece of work this week is that most of the infrastructure code I've done, including the webpages and work on the CAT system scripting is now backed up on bitbucket. |
15:25 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) claps her hand over her mouth and shuts up |
15:25 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Samm, want a flower? |
15:26 |
Samm Florian |
That's ok, I'm comfy. :) |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The other aspect of this is that the webpages are now device responsive -- you should be able to read them on a smartphone. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh! That's a quite a fix. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Since many now access the internet via phone, that can make them a lot more accessible. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I just looked at it. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As a side effect, there's now more flexibility and room on the navigation bar to add new pages (looks at Samm meaningfully). |
15:28 |
|
Samm Florian blushes. Sorry, NaNoWriMo |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes a lot of the SL world slows down during National Novel Writing Month :) |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
nods |
15:29 |
Samm Florian |
I oughta move my "proposed classes" page over there though, eh? |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Word, I have a question for you. A semi-regular at Oxbridge, Nympy, expressed an interest in teaching an Avatar-Makeover type class. Did she ever get in touch with you and follow through? |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can set up a template page -- then you just drop in the contents in the middle. |
15:30 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Is that Nymph? She's very new |
15:30 |
|
Samm Florian nods. Or I can probly figure it out from th'pages already there. |
15:31 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
she asked to be Tutor, but I told her to learn more about SL first |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
She did, and I got a proposal notecard from her just before the policy stuff blew up. And want to get a copy to Samm to look over. |
15:31 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
kk |
15:31 |
Samm Florian |
Ooh, an actual proposal! :D |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Am I correct that being a tutor is not required to teach a class, though? Those are two separate paths? |
15:32 |
Samm Florian |
I ain't never been a tutor. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
She's thinking an extensive curriculum as well as not completely English fluent, so some things to discuss and work out. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Excellent. She seems to know her stuff, up to an including, how to work with the new mesh avatars. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope she follows through. |
15:32 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
no, tutors and professors are different jobs, Samm. |
15:32 |
Samm Florian |
Yah, ya really can never fit as much stuff into an SL class as ya think ya can. |
15:32 |
Samm Florian |
Yup |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh I know. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, being a tutor is one pathway that checks how aligned someone is with Oxbridge's goals and Caledon's culture. |
15:33 |
Samm Florian |
Oh I get it, you were sayin' "No reason she can't teach a class even if she ain't ready to be a tutor yet" |
15:33 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
yes. different skill sets |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I get the feeling she is also thinking of a multi-week program. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, I want to consider and discuss it, but not something I feel can just be dropped into place. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Agreed |
15:35 |
Samm Florian |
She could do a one-shot lecture as a trial run |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We've probably gone on long enough. Let's take some questions. |
15:35 |
|
Samm Florian had a couple things she's been up to this week. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Let's here Samm's report, Carl. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. Please tell us. I thought Wordsmith had covered your area. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
My mistake. |
15:37 |
Samm Florian |
Well, this ain't Education stuff really. |
15:37 |
Samm Florian |
'Cause of th'no-ejection policy and th'danger of th'main sim fillin' up, I've been thinkin' about how to use this space as a backup for th'main lecture hall, for overflow crowds. |
15:38 |
Samm Florian |
There's a chat repeater in each lecture hall…they're the truncated pyramids with the Caledon tartan on 'em. If a COU member clicks on it down in Oxbridge, it'll relay chat up to here and vice versa. |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
Also I set up this purple block as a demo; if ya sit on it, it'll redirect yer camera down into the main lecture hall. |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Has to be a COUG tag on up here. |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
Yup. |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
But th'one in the main hall will activate and deactivate both of 'em. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I like the rabbit ears :) |
15:39 |
Samm Florian |
This purple block is just a demo, but if we need to we could do somethin' like this with th'benches up here. |
15:40 |
|
Samm Florian grins. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Is that camera redirect range dependent Samm (depending on a person's view distance)? |
15:40 |
Samm Florian |
You hafta disable camera constraints fer it to work. That's a seting in the Advanced menu. |
15:40 |
Samm Florian |
But with that and th'chat repeater it would almost be like bein' down there, even from a differnt sim. Kinda creepy, actually. :) |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
A reminder: Disabling Camera Constraints is fun. You can look inside people's heads and see the backs of their eyeballs! |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Carl, you're weird. |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
;^) |
15:41 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
would the owner have control of there camera once there samm? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I was wondering if it would still work for someone who needs to run at a view distance of say 128m? |
15:42 |
Samm Florian |
Yes, though it's not quite as intuitive as normal? They'd hafta experiment a little bit. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Amateur perverts look up skirts. Pros look inside skulls! |
15:42 |
Samm Florian |
Yah, I don't think it depends on yer view distance. |
15:42 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
LOL |
15:42 |
Samm Florian |
Yer whole camera jes moves down to th'room. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. It just limits what is drawn around that point where your camera is to 128 |
15:42 |
Samm Florian |
Right. |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Good. |
15:43 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
and does the esc key return the camera to the alt hall? |
15:43 |
Samm Florian |
You could move yer camera down there yerself, it would jes take a while and you'd hafta find th'lecture hall and stuf. |
15:43 |
Samm Florian |
No, you hafta stand up to return yer camera. |
15:43 |
Samm Florian |
Escape will reset it to th'default position in th'lecture hall. |
15:44 |
Samm Florian |
It's a funny property, you can't turn it on or off while yer sittin' on it via script. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And for large crowds that move us up here, I'd assume that those who require a G-rated sim could use it to see up here, or is that limited? |
15:44 |
Samm Florian |
Which is sad 'cause it would be great if evrybuddy was sittin' in th'benches here, and I could jes throw a switch and BOOM there ya were |
15:44 |
Samm Florian |
That I don't know. |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Perhaps we could create a test 17 year old alt? |
15:45 |
Samm Florian |
That's a differnt issue though, 'cause we probly won't need an overflow venue for classes that meet here. |
15:45 |
Samm Florian |
Can underage folk look into non-G sims? |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, it's the issue that there are those who can't come here. |
15:45 |
Samm Florian |
If they can't, then no. |
15:45 |
Samm Florian |
They can still get th'chat though. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
For Q&A, there's not a lot to see. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
We could set up slides both places if we wanted. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
Fer Trivia, I dunno. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Charts and the like. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
Right. Wouldn't be hard to set up a synchronized chart system. |
15:46 |
Samm Florian |
Well ok, it'd be a LITTLE hard. |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Best we leave some time for questions. (at least check if there are such) |
15:47 |
Samm Florian |
Sure |
15:47 |
Samm Florian |
(Give th'purple block a try though, see how ya like it.) |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
Just an observation. I don't think hte Tower Clock "Fell back" when it needed to. |
15:48 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Looks around. Maybe we need door prizes? |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Rather like a virtual world in a virtual world. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. Someone is cosplaying Harry Dresden by the stone circle. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't have edit rights to it. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will ask Desmond if he does as Desmond Magic |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We may have to replace that clock if no one is left that does. |
15:49 |
Gronk Seriman |
Hey! Don't we have a class on that? |
15:50 |
|
Gronk Seriman smiles |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do. |
15:50 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Is it mesh, on of revallis? |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is prim based |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Mesh was not an option when the clock was created. |
15:51 |
Samm Florian |
Yay prims! |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Samm, are you suggesting that prims are proper? |
15:52 |
|
Samm Florian is a prim kid. :) |
15:52 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
I understand Ravelli is taking a break form SL. Who would do the rebuild? |
15:52 |
Samm Florian |
Weird that th'clock wouldn't be based on SL time directly. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It could be, but getting UTC time from the LL routines and converting to local time. |
15:53 |
Samm Florian |
Sure. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ravelli may have already done one. I would need to log on to his opensim to check |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we can't fix the tower, we would just implement a temporary replacement. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I can do that. |
15:54 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Do we need a clock tower |
15:55 |
Samm Florian |
Sure! |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's a university. |
15:55 |
Samm Florian |
Though havin' it show th'wrong time is kinda authentic. |
15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
Heh! |
15:55 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
<grin> |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
True. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But confusing to new users, though. |
15:56 |
Samm Florian |
Mebbe it oughta run backwards. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:57 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
How about a announcment |
15:58 |
Samm Florian |
Dah da da daaaaaah! |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Feel free. |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
My ice pond is ready for visitors. There will be some more additions over this next week. But if anyone wishes to use it. it is ready. there are feree skates there by the train station. |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
on sec and i'll have the slurl |
15:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
Fantastic! |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Caledon Oxbridge Village (211,209,22) |
16:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
I still have a chat system to install. |
16:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
And some decorations |
16:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
but it is done. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nice. |
16:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
end announcement |
16:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We will be having a smaller one here when winter hits, as Martini has given me a copy of hers, too. |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Great. |
16:02 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Sounds good |
16:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions tonight? I think our time is officially up |
16:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And there are more deans on the stage than audience in the seats :) |
16:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
I noticed that. Wverybody snuck off! |
16:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perhaps we need better jokes. |
16:04 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms2) |
Or door prizes. |
16:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you all soon. |
16:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Q&A Dismissed |
16:09 |
|
Carl Metropolitan rings a school bell. |
16:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
Good evening, everybody! |
16:10 |
Samm Florian |
Feel free t'test the purple peeper block! :) |
16:10 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Take care all! |
