15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We are here to answer any questions you may have about Second Life, Caledon, and Oxbridge. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We also start out by giving short reports from the areas of the various dean's responsiblities. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So let's start out with Phyrnne and Larky, our co-Deans of commons |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
It's autumn! |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
You might notice that because there are more trees on campus whose leaves have turned |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
and more trees, in general. |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
(I've been decorating.) |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
Also, I have sent out notecards to a lot of people asking for items to go into the Advent Calendar we hope to have in December. |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Be careful on those ladders. Don't "Fall". |
15:05 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Leaf it alone, Wordsmith |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
If you would like to give me something for that, please contact me and I'll let you know what's needed. |
15:05 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
The puns of oxbridge seem to be rooted quite firmly in place... |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
they do branch out sometimes |
15:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
You can pun and I cannot hide... |
15:06 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
The delivery is a tad wooden at times. |
15:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Just be sure to save the bows for /after/ the performance |
15:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Or, boughs, even. |
15:06 |
|
Phrynne is eating shrimp dumplings with XO sauce with wooden chopsticks, if that helps any |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky, do you have anything to add? |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Some members of Photo Salon met last night to discuss an oncampus memorium for Meora. Is memorium a word? |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
yes |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Memorial is more common. |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Anyway, With Lindal's and some other folks help, I'm putting together a slide show. And I'm open to donations of pictures of Meora. Lukn4tacos has already donated some lovely ones, and I'm hoping to get some of Meora's photos to include, as well. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I suggested setting aside a small park area as a memorial which could be used as a memorial location for the future, too. I'm going to try to find a good place for it. |
15:10 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
We also had a report of an off-campus sexual harassment incident, involving someone who is known on campus, although they are not a staff member. We've been working to add wording to notecards that encourages people to report such incidences, and makes it clear we take them seriously. |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I think that's it for me. Oh, I will be out of town for a long week this coming week, so I may not be around much. I'll stay in touch with Phrynne, however. |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
RL out of town |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
and I may be offline much of next weekend also. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do we have any grounds to control what people do off-Oxbridge? |
15:11 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Was this incident reported to LL? |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
If the incident starts when someone on campus invites a newcomer to a less-than-savory situation, yes, I think we do. |
15:12 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
In this incident, there is no proof in text chat or anything. I don't think we can do much except keep an eye on the people involved. Larky defers to Phrynne |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would be uncomfortable trying to adjudicate stuff that didn't even occur under our purview. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. That's different. If it starts here, then it is our business. |
15:12 |
|
Samm Florian nods. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
I am concerned that new people who are here should be able to trust whoever they encounter at Oxbridge, as much as possible. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's soliciting or recruiting on campus. |
15:13 |
Phrynne |
And I don't want them to be upset by mistreatment by someone they meet at Oxbridge. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And without disclosure of intent. |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
If people who first met at Oxbridge meet elsewhere and then things happen... that's not our business. But if it starts here, it is. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Aylaria has an announcement to make about the Fall Event. |
15:14 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Agree - just make sure there's real evidence |
15:15 |
|
Aylaria (emberell) nods. |
15:15 |
Samm Florian |
Has th'perpretator been warned? |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
We are handling the situation. |
15:15 |
Samm Florian |
'k |
15:16 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Speaking of the fall event - due to RL issues, I need to step back fro mcoordinating the event. As things are, I think the best thing to do is to put it on hold until we can come back to it - so I've made the announcement to everyone working on it that for now we do not actively plan on continuing it. Originally we had planned for it to be from the 30th to the first, with dances on the 31st, but as of today everything on my end has been cancelled there. There are a few other events being held by Nyree, and other hosts on those days instead, I believe |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would like to note that, the RL stuff that came up for Aylaria was completely unanticipated. |
15:17 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
RL is like that a lot, unfortunately... |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, I could not do anything on it due to RL matters either. And the only reason Aylaria was in the position of having to take over, then forced to step back, is because the originator of the festival fundraiser quit herself |
15:18 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
If there are any questions about the event itself and what is going on, feel free to send me an IM on the subject. I'll be happy to answer as I can |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Many thanks to Aylaria for even trying to take it over. |
15:18 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I'm glad Aylaria and Carl are taking care of themselves! |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm just sorry this fizzled |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We will try to do another Winter Auction again this year, however. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But that's for the future |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've managed to be in world more often this week, but still not as much as I should have been, and I have a lot of catch up to do. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
My father is out of the ICU and into a long-term care area of the hospital, and is very slowly doing better. He's more responsive, and breathing on his own more. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm still not coping well, as I've been unreasonably angry about random things. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... oversharing that last bit :) |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith/Samm, any news from the world of Education and Vice Chancelloring? |
15:23 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
We understand, Carl. I'm sure I don't speak for myself when I say our warmest wishes and thoughts go out to you and your father, for a swift and unworrisome recovery |
15:23 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
agree - best wishes |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, Samm's got a list of class ideas or teachers going. I went through some of my various notes and sent additions to her. |
15:24 |
Samm Florian |
Here's a website with some ideas fer new classes, or classes t'bring back: http://samm.nfshost.com/Oxbridge/ |
15:25 |
Samm Florian |
I've grouped 'em into categories, and I also included th'current classes jes fer completeness. |
15:25 |
Samm Florian |
I still gotta add Word's suggestions. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can I send you some of my suggestions? |
15:25 |
Samm Florian |
Please do! |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, after getting behind on instructor payroll with travel and subsequent high fever, that's all current up through last night. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can you take one now? Brace Coral teaches a very good class on Creating Your SL Profile at NCI, and has told me she would be happy to share the notes with us (she owns it; not NCI). |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I did send her your full-perm mesh class in my list, Carl. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She might even be able to teach it. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I saw that. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
These are all great ideas. |
15:28 |
Samm Florian |
I hafta go now…dinner time. NC/email/IM me with ideas, evrybuddy. :) |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know a former Oxbridge teacher and friend of mine (Deyanira Yalin) teaches a series of Jewelry making classes at Builders Brewery. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks, Samm. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let's got to questions now! |
15:28 |
|
Samm Florian waves and poofs. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any questions. We actually know quite a bit between the four of us. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And we can google good, too :) |
15:31 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
How goes work on the CATs? |
15:32 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
And puns - although we look to Aylaria for a headstart on those! |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've finished modifications to the engine script. Put the watchtower script (rezzing and over sight) on hold while I was traveling and then sick, but am strengthening its monitoring and recovery from loss of its URL. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And having it so it only will rez a new ship if it both has a valid URL and has registered it (DDNS) so a rezzed ship can communicate back to it. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And I bet your scripts are well organized and throughly commented, too. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I am commenting Kaluura's scripts as I go through them and modify them. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Cool |
15:37 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
So it sounds like they're coming along well, in building and commenting |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, it's work around other things, but trying to make it more resilient and fail-safe. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The engine script, btw, is what's running the small ship active at Oxbridge (which lands behind the rail station). |
15:38 |
TeeLu |
CATs are catamarans? |
15:38 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Caledon Air Transports |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Large and beautiful airships. |
15:39 |
TeeLu |
Oh ok |
15:39 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Is anything about their design being changed before their reimplementation, or will they be as good as new? |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The have routes (which have to be redone) around Caledon and are public transport. |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Would the subs be included later? |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, Elf. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In SL, the subs are always a factor :) |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The scripting is being changed. The design, as far as I know now, will continue to work. |
15:41 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
subs? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They weren't using the hack that allowed turning child prims phantom while leaving the root prim normal. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Submarines. |
15:41 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
TY |
15:42 |
Phrynne |
A small fleet of submarines connected several regions |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Down below, underneath the CAT landing platform, there's a place for the sub to dock. SW side of Oxbridge Villiage. |
15:42 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Never got to see those. would be nice to see them up and running |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It would. I miss their occasional trip through the lecture hall. |
15:43 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) giggles |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, they did. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I found a bit of train off the west coast the other day. |
15:44 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
LMAO - was it very rusty? |
15:44 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Oh, I'll never forget the day I saw the train coming out a second story window. |
15:45 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I remember when the minisub was running _through_ then Oxbridge entrance hall.. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, I've a few scripting projects in the task list. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh, speaking of underwater stuff, I have a shark with laser beams on its head, if we want to use that instead of the ordinary one we have :) |
15:47 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Would it be blasting krakens? |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Be fine with me, Carl. |
15:48 |
Phrynne |
cool! |
15:48 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Do we really want to introduce lasersharks to the waters...? I mean, they're good griefer repellant, but i swear they'll team up with the flying kraken to cause some apocalypse or another... |
15:48 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
You just want to eat all the griefers yourself, Aylaria :-) |
15:49 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
That's neither here nor there! |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
With no sims to the west or north now, ejected avatars tend to stack up (sometimes literally) in the NW corner. So I added a couple of sharks up there. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions today? |
15:50 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
What is the highest avatars can stack, if balanced correctly? |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne, what were you seeing in stacked avatars? |
15:51 |
Phrynne |
Four, most of the time |
15:52 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Just like Legos! |
15:52 |
Phrynne |
I think five once, standing on each other's heads |
15:52 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) winks at Ayla |
15:52 |
Phrynne |
but it made Oxbridge lag terribly since we were near 18 people at the time. |
15:52 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
hehe |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which, should still be counting against our 20 avatar limit. |
15:53 |
Phrynne |
Yes. When people are ejected and go to the east, they generally end up in waters of Oxbridge Village. |
15:53 |
Phrynne |
but where someone is ejected to depends on where they are in Oxbridge, and it's up to the script in the region to decide that. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which is a full sim. |
15:53 |
Phrynne |
yes |
15:53 |
Phrynne |
The Village can handle a few extras |
15:54 |
TeeLu |
When someone is ejected, don't they go "Home"? |
15:54 |
Phrynne |
Not necessarily |
15:54 |
Phrynne |
It's possible for some of us on the staff to return people to their Home spot, but that is not what the region script does. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Will a ban, cause them to be ejected from the sim? |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, eject is supposed to move them off the nearest edge. But there is no "off" to the north or west of Oxbridge. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We can TP them home. |
15:55 |
Phrynne |
A ban, in the NW corner, just puts someone up in that corner, and at that point they have to be sent home. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That an EM power and Phrynne can do that via a script I own. |
15:56 |
TeeLu |
Is that a Second Life thing or just here? Seems if you have a troublemaker they should be gone. |
15:56 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Sometimes it seems they end up falling and jumping up and down in the corner.. |
15:56 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
does it cause problems if their home /is/ Oxbridge? |
15:56 |
Phrynne |
Yes, that can be an issue, but people who cause trouble rarely have their home here. |
15:56 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
that's when I whistle for the sharks! ;^) |
15:57 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Ah, hehe good call ^.=.^ |
15:57 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some idiots want to disrupt especially the newcomers... |
15:57 |
TeeLu |
I've been sent "Home" by accidentally landing somewhere looking for a store. |
15:58 |
Phrynne |
So have I, at times. |
15:58 |
Phrynne |
especially when checking old landmarks to see if a place is still there -- when it's not. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That kind of "sending" isn't allowed under Caledon's covenant. |
15:58 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some areas also have "security bots" that send people away. |
15:59 |
TeeLu |
It surprised me. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But sending someone home for cause is. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Caledon Covenant does not allow security bots. |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
below 512m |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, if you are AFK/asleep at Oxbridge and the sim is filling, there's a high likelihood of being sent home. |
16:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If there are no more questions, I think that we're at the end of our time this afternoon. |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ignoring rules or staff directives eventually will get a person removed. |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But a person will first get greeted, asked to correct whatever the problem is, given a behavior at Oxbridge card, and then removed if they insist or harass the staff. |
16:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I keep reminding staff to state that we have rules, they have choices, and choices have consequences. |
16:05 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I like following a three point scale, for minor offenders - politely inform thwm in IM, then again in local if they don't respond. It gives them a chance to learn why that behaviour is wrong, if they're willing to listen |
16:05 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Three strikes, you're out |
16:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
some folk do need to be more immediately removed, but a diplomatic approach can work wonders |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At least wrong for Oxbridge. |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming today. |
16:06 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
night mr sky smith |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Goodnight |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
16:07 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Thank you all, as always, for taking the time to keep us informed and to answer our questions |
16:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me. |
16:07 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sleep well. |
16:08 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I do hope so... |
16:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Good night, Mr. Elfbiter |
16:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you for coming, everyone. |
