Carl Metropolitan |
Hello. I've not been in world much this week for personal reasons. I'm just going to stand out of the way here and let the deans talk and answer any questions I'm uniquely in a position to answer. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal, please go first. |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
OK Carl |
15:04 |
Lindal Kidd |
We had a student point out that a kiosk in the Appearance Hall was giving out landmarks to the village dressing rooms that were not valid |
15:04 |
Lindal Kidd |
I replaced that kiosk with a new texture and the correct landmarks |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hee. |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
our students can be our best editors! |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
I also did a special off campus offering of our Avatar Safety class |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
at the request of Morgan Micakalobe and the Hope and Care Center |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
it was well attended, although we had more trolls than I was used to! |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope you got to demo the eject and ban tools for the class. |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
Next week, I'll do two offerings of Safety for Virtual Ability too. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Have you updated the class to mention the recent "gift card" scams? |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
I have, yes! |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
and I am doing further updates to the phishing section |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I know that this isn't your motivation for doing classes at Virtual Ability, but I'm glad COU is giving back to them. they've come through grandly with two of our visitors this week. |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
to call attention to some of the latest tricks |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
VA is good people, yes! |
15:07 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
yes, they are |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
that's all from my department, Carl |
15:07 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) wonders what's "new" in gift card scams since he has seen them for some years... |
15:08 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I don't have much to report. Phyrnne has been out for a few days. We have had several new tutor applicants, including Johann and quantum Mechanique |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is just back. People stand around at stores and tell shoppers they have "won" a free gift card. And the gift card when attached does a Permission Debit window, and if the person doesn't know better, they will click "Yes" and get their L$ balance drained. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
New twist on an old scam. |
15:09 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
awful |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I used to do an hour class just on scams in SL |
15:10 |
Lindal Kidd |
I encountered an Evil Soda Machine once...the scammer convinced a noob it was a profitable business. She rezzed it, gave it permission, and it took her money. |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Particularly, since it's likely aimed at those relatively new to SL -- it's going to make a strong impression. |
15:11 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
absolutely - not a huge profit for the gangsters, but a huge image loss for SL |
15:11 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
And it does come to Oxbridge. Phrynne helped a new visitor who had been around for several days when he lost his L$ this past week due to a scam. |
15:11 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
oooughhhhh |
15:11 |
Lindal Kidd |
oh! |
15:11 |
Lindal Kidd |
also! |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you think a "Beware Scams" tutorial poster in the Hall of Money and Commerce might be useful? |
15:12 |
Lindal Kidd |
we had, I believe, one of our students fall for a phishing scam |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If we have room, which I think we do. |
15:12 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
That was what it was, Lindal. I forgot details. Sorry. |
15:12 |
Lindal Kidd |
all of a sudden, his account started posting phishing links in various groups, something I would not have believed this person would do |
15:13 |
Lindal Kidd |
even if you get a link from someone you know, be careful |
15:13 |
Lindal Kidd |
that person might not BE that person! |
15:13 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
And don't assume that a link posted to a group like the Scholar's group is necessarily safe. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will do a draft of that "beware scams" poster and run it by Lindal |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am feeling functional tonight |
15:13 |
Sandie Harbour |
Raises Hand |
15:13 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
well, SL is just repeating what does happen in RL all the time |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And particularly abort if you do click on such a link and it wants sign-in information. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Miss Sandie? |
15:15 |
Sandie Harbour |
Do we have the material for a scam class? |
15:15 |
Lindal Kidd |
I cover a LOT of scams in Avatar Safety. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, it falls under Lindal's "Avatar Safety" class. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm just talking about a tutorial poster in Hall of Money and Commerce |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just one |
15:16 |
Sandie Harbour |
thank-you |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As for an entire scam class, I think Lindal covers it all well. |
15:16 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Avatar Safety is *such* an important class. I wonder if it should be advertised in the orientation at least once? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
A lot of the scams I used to teach about are no longer relevant. |
15:16 |
Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) |
What kind of scams are no longer relevant? I thought most scams were timeless. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First Land scams :) |
15:17 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
SCammers might try old tricks if they become unknown. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ad Farms |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'm sure glad THOSE are gone! |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you like I can dig out my notes and give you a list of now gone scams. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Rigged Casino Machines |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
SL Banks |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'd like that, Carl |
15:18 |
|
Carl Metropolitan remembers when Ginko Financial was a thing. |
15:18 |
Brian (mannadrop) |
If I might, what if you added the "& Scams" catch Phrase to Dean Kidd's class title? It might garner more attention to a new user. |
15:18 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
That particular class fills the sim to capacity at times anyway. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Should we move it here? |
15:18 |
Lindal Kidd |
"Avatar Safety and Scam-Proofing"? |
15:18 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
That's why we have this hall! |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Keep with the simple title. |
15:19 |
Brian (mannadrop) |
something like that |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's a good title. |
15:19 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
I do have people assume that it is just normal internet safety. "Don't meet someone from online except in a public place." |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do have an extra line for the title. Ping me with what you want, Lindal. |
15:20 |
Lindal Kidd |
ok, I'll give it some thought |
15:20 |
Lindal Kidd |
thanks for the suggestion, Brian |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, do you have any stuff to announce before we go to questions? |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nothing this week other than Samm is collecting/collating input for wanted classes and potential teachers. Ping her or me with suggestions. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So questions? |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We can answer questions about SL, Caledon, Oxbridge, or anything else we can Google :) |
15:24 |
Lindal Kidd |
Google makes you seem like a Schmott Guy! |
15:24 |
Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) |
That's a good idea Dean Fae. I think a lot of experienced internet users will think that there is nothing meaningful that they can learn from a "basic" safety class. |
15:24 |
Sandie Harbour |
raises hand |
15:24 |
Glorf Bulmer |
(The big notice in the doorway) |
15:25 |
JasperJag |
cool!@ |
15:25 |
JasperJag |
thanks :) u too graygarth |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sandie? |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oh, Lindal, I was serious about asking you to note and cultural / audience differences you see in teaching elsewhere. |
15:26 |
Sandie Harbour |
I have been using Word's translator quite a bit. And people have been asking me for a copy. I know that is reserved for this group. Are there others people have been using |
15:26 |
Lindal Kidd |
I will send you my observations, Word |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks. |
15:26 |
Lindal Kidd |
I use Q-Translator. It's rather expensive, though. |
15:27 |
Sandie Harbour |
takes a note |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Larky, there was Q and I think one other when you were looking. |
15:27 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
There's an MH Translator. I believe it goes for around L$400. |
15:28 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
there's also another one, but it is a command-line tool. Not very user-friendly |
15:28 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Sandie. I'll send you LMs. Anyone else? |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith's Oxbridge translator is limited to a certain number of free characters per month. If we go over that limit, we get shut off. |
15:28 |
Sandie Harbour |
I think the one Word wrote is brilliantQ |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They are going to be costly if they are general distribution. They have to capture the lifetime cost to be paid to Google or Microsoft in the sale price. |
15:30 |
Sandie Harbour |
thank-you |
15:30 |
Sandie Harbour |
I have not shared ours |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I don't think I've distributed it with mod permissions AND it only works for those I register. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sorry, with trans permissions. |
15:35 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
hmm |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I guess we have no more questions this evening. |
15:38 |
Lindal Kidd |
Why are there eight hot dog buns in a package, but hot dogs only come five in a package? |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The Illuminati, Lindal |
15:39 |
Lindal Kidd |
ahhhh! |
15:39 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Now, Lindal, we don't allow buns here at Oxbridge. They must be covered!!! |
15:39 |
lovejoy2199 |
Which country Landal? |
15:39 |
|
Lindal Kidd falls off her chair laughing! |
15:40 |
JasperJag |
I reakon its the Bilderberger Group - they're behind everything ;) |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Do hot dogs have to have a metallic aftertaste by some degree? |
15:40 |
Sandie Harbour |
I just learned the difference between a cat and a comma? |
15:40 |
Lindal Kidd |
a cat won't comma when you calla him? |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Okay, Sandie, I'll bite. What's the difference? |
15:41 |
|
Badass Fae (larkylouz) giggles |
15:41 |
JasperJag |
the spelling? |
15:41 |
Sandie Harbour |
A cat has claws at the end of its paws. A comma has a pause at the end of the clause |
15:41 |
Lindal Kidd |
!!! |
15:41 |
Jujue |
hahhahaha |
15:41 |
JasperJag |
:) |
15:41 |
Sandie Harbour |
blushes and giggles |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A good word play. |
15:41 |
Badass Fae (larkylouz) |
Heee - good one, Sandie |
15:42 |
Jujue |
I was thinking catatonic and coma, buts thats different altogether....hehe |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you all soon. I have no good jokes this afternoon. |
15:43 |
Menta Black (mentadent) |
Americans use a meter to measure inches - Germans use an "inch-stick" to measure meters |
15:43 |
|
Brian (mannadrop) wants a hot dog now... |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Gin goes better with tonic than do cats. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye |
15:43 |
Jujue |
lol |
15:43 |
Lindal Kidd |
woot! |
15:43 |
Lindal Kidd |
point for Word |
15:43 |
Sandie Harbour |
sorry |
15:43 |
Sandie Harbour |
giggels |
