Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome all, to Oxbridge Deans Q&A |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This is our weekly chance to keep you in the loop on what's happening at Oxbridge and your chance to ask us questions. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, Carl. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I guess we should start with the Dean reports? |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
yes. Phrynne has an item. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't know if we have a lot to report this week, but let's see. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
A while back, some students reported to me that they could not watch the machinima of Caledon the Musical in the Hall of Caledon. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
I looked into it, and discovered that the copyright holders to the music in that video had blocked it from viewing in certain areas -- namely, North America. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
It was still visible in Britain, as its creator, Mr. Oolon Sputnik, verified for me. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
We considered various ways to make it available here again but did not have an answer. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
I checked today, and if you are in North America (or wherever else it is blocked) and you click on the screen there, you will be given the URL for a webpage -- which will tell you that the video is blocked, but it will also point you to YouTube, where it *is* visible. |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
So it is still available, though not where we would like it to be. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
And perhaps we can find a way to bring it back. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
That's all I have. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It sounds like the original URL was blocked but that there's a new copy available. Which may just mean changing the url for media on a prim. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The only other option would be to replace the sound track with some public domain music, and I think that would be a huge pain in the ass and something the creator would have to do. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
The creator has declined to do it. |
15:10 |
Phrynne |
and it would be a huge and horrible job to have to recut the film to fit another score. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That does not surprise me. |
15:11 |
Phrynne |
It was made ... 8 years ago? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Perhaps we can replace that with a poster that clicking on it links to the YouTube page in an external viewer. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Anything else to go over Phrynne? |
15:12 |
Phrynne |
No, not today, thanks. Larkylouz is detained in RL but had nothing to add for the moment. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have a report from Lindal, who can't make it this afternoon. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- Wrote and distributed a giveaway notecard on RLV. Thank you, Meora, for the suggestion! |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- Wrote and distributed a giveaway notecard on Land. This note is also in a revised kiosk in the College of Money and Commerce. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- Wrote and distributed a giveaway notecard on Lag. This will be placed in a new kiosk in the College of Camera Control as well. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- Discovered that LL has stopped sending newbies to Social Islands 1,2, and 3. Social Islands 4, 5 and 6 are full of newcomers, however, and they are now accessible to Residents. Sent out a notecard to this effect. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- LL News: The Lab has reduced the cost of a monthly Premium membership from $9.95 to $9.50 USD/mo. In addition, they are no longer charging VAT on Premium dues, and monthly members now have access to Concierge level live chat support. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
- Safety news: This has been posted in many groups, including COUG. There is a phishing scam which leads to a page promising a $L2500 reward for completing a survey for Linden Lab. Don't fall for it, it's a phishing scam. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I sent out a warning about that scam too last night |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As for myself, I just want to remind anyone who's a Patron that the September payment is coming up, and thank you all for your continued support of our tier. |
15:15 |
Josain Zsun |
That website was taken down last night. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, but we don't know if it is permanent. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which one Josain? |
15:16 |
Josain Zsun |
The link in the bogus survey |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope it is down for good |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can find a brief warning tutorial about it in the notices for ISC or COUG last night. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lindal had mentioned that newbies coming into Social Islands 1, 2, and 3 had decreased and the number of those partying had increased. Has an eerie echo to the history of the help islands. |
15:19 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Gathering griefers, possibly. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, a number of people have commented on your tiny airship circling Oxbridge. I told people I thought it was testing for a new CAT script, but that I was not sure. Can you comment on that? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, that's my main report item for the week. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That test ship is running on the engine script for the CATs -- a slightly modified and now commented version I've done, but the basic logic is still that of Kaluura Boas. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The little ship is a bit of a cobble together but it verifies that the script is working and that I have figured out how to write trajectories for it. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It now lands behind the rail station and does a circle around Oxbridge. Anyone is free to ride it. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
To take a line from Fogwoman. It's perfectly safe. Perfectly. We're sure that this time we've solved the problem of the catalytic fuel exploding. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Did Kaluura Boas die in RL? I noticed a CAT flag at half staff in honor of him in Steam Sky City. |
15:24 |
Phrynne |
Yes, he did, some months ago. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
He did, a while back. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I rode it for about half an hour yesterday while I was in IMs. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm sorry to hear that. I did not know. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yay! |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Jorge had tried to get it going with another scripter but it used a different approach, wasn't working well enough, and he didn't have full permissions on some of the scripts. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm slowly going through now, the scripts for communication between the rezzer and the ship it watches over. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I thought it would be both encouraging to Jorge and a bit of visual interest at Oxbridge to just let the text vehicle run. We 'need' airships in the sky. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope that the two of you can bring back CAT soon. |
15:29 |
Gronk Seriman |
Do we still have the old airships in a hangar somewhere? |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Knowing that the engine works is a big step. I can reinforce the communications to better handle failure and then I have to work out with Jorge how to create trajectories. |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oh, yes. Those are creations of Jorge's. It's the scripting and the routes that were problems for different reasons. |
15:30 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah! Good! |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I even have one of the to work with. It pretty much takes up our entire sandbox. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's take questions and comments from everyone now. (I'd like to start with one to Wordsmith) |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
nods. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, I've been considering and talking to people about whether we should have some non-class events here, such as dances or building contests or show & tells. Do you want these to run though the Education Department? Or should I just go ahead and work on them, and coordinate scheduling with you? |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've been telling those I've talked to that they don't have to commit to a class. Propose an event, a seminar, or a seminar series and we'll make it happen. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The main coordination I'd do is just to make sure there aren't schedule conflicts and that it's of interest to Oxbridge and Caledon. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That last I'm sure you handle well. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Right now I'm considering a weekly new resident dance (over Village) and a "Show & Tell" contest. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And putting Trivia back on the schedule. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Those would both be good. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You up to Tuesdays for trivia again or need a new time? |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Then I will poke around on theose too |
15:37 |
Garret Black (pantau) |
We could consider having a belly dancing contest too - - sorry - could not hold that back ;o) |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I need a new time. Trivia on tuesdays was not working. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm not sure when yet. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Okay. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I did have someone suggest that we have a best outfit contest for people who's talents were limited to shopping, but I think that's out of our mandate :) |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Cala Mondrago is good on the belly dancing, I believe. |
15:38 |
Garret Black (pantau) |
hehehe |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I think Miss Gronk had talked to me of a show and tell for those making items they wear. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
A show & tell would not be limited to items built. So if someone makes oufits, they could shot and tell them. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or even assembling a "look". -- motivations, coordination, getting items to work together. (no mid-thigh gaps) |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It would depend on the interest level. |
15:41 |
Gronk Seriman |
That was my plan. Just simply Show & Tell about your Avatars. How you made, got or bought them, ets. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
While I think of it, Josain has combined his tour class into both personal inventory and library. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Gronk would you perhaps be interested in hosting something like that? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So you might see help/collaboration with Gronk. |
15:42 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have been thinking about that topic for a long time. Thinking hasn'e advanced to doing, yet. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
How about other questions? |
15:45 |
Phrynne |
*hears crickets* |
15:45 |
Garret Black (pantau) |
needle falling down |
15:46 |
Gronk Seriman |
I hate to ask after the wonderful news about the CATs, but is there any hope for the horse-n-carriages? |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That is owned by Desmond, I think. Does anyone know for sure? |
15:47 |
Phrynne |
I believe Des has one more set of them, which he is working on getting in usable form -- but it is the last one. There are no more inworld or on Marketplace. He mentioned it when he was online recently. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Des had rezzed his last carriage. I think he didn't set the group and it likely returned to him (my guess). |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
The village just isn't the same without the "clopp-a clopp-a" |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I did check while it was out for a brief time. The horse and carriage was 51 prims and the horses had separately movable upper and lower legs. |
15:50 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
It was going to be difficult thing to do from the outset. A new system may need to be devised |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will check on marketplace to see if there are any off the shelf solutions that might work. |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, parts could be mesh, one would still need a horse with a number of movable parts since animations are limited to avatars inworld. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I suppose the clip-clop just wouldn't seem the same with a large snail pulling the carriage? |
15:54 |
Phrynne |
I'm not sure the large snails I've seen inworld -- or even the smaller ones -- would fit on Village roads. |
15:54 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
New set of steampunk carriages? |
15:54 |
Meora (menchor) |
would need a slimy slide noise and a trail |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming tonight |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
See you all over the next week and next Sunday right here! |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Same time; same station. |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye |
