Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2015-07-19
15:01 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to Q&A With the Deans! This is our weekly open meeting where we report on what's going on at Oxbridge and then you ask us any questions you have about Oxbridge, Caledon, the Steamlands, or Second Life in general! |
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Lindal (Dean of Information) can't be here today due to some RL events. Phrynne is still recovering and will be hiding in the audience, but she's briefed Larky on whatever she needs to know. |
15:02 | Phrynne ducks under a bench
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | But first—I want to announce an organizational change. I've officially appointed Wordsmith as "Vice Chancellor" of Caledon Oxbridge. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | This really changes nothing; he's essentially been acting in this role since I took back over. |
15:03 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | woot |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | But now he has a fancy title tag. |
15:03 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | sends squirrels under the bench to keep phrynne company |
15:03 | Gronk Seriman | Congratulations, Word! |
15:03 | Aylaria (emberell) | Congratulations, Word! ^.=.^ |
15:03 | Meora (menchor) takes picture of Phrynne and decides which filter to use
15:03 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | congratulations |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | Due to the limit of 10 tags per group, I had to kill the Oxbridge Patron tag. That's going to come back in COUG, for our patron who want to wear it. |
15:03 | Phrynne poses with the squirrel
15:04 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Yeah, Word definitely doesn't do enough around here. . . |
15:04 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Snort!!! |
15:04 | Briella Everhart (heavenlymay101) giggles.
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Well, now he has this nice prestigious title to go with it :) |
15:04 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | ty ... and, it in no way changes my willingness to be available for talking or my desire to create consensus when and where possible. |
15:05 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) has had reason to thank Word for those skills many times.
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | The work he does is real and important. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | The work he does is real and important. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | If he were a shameless self-promoter like myself, he would have it under "Volunteer" on his LinkedIn page :) |
15:05 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) gets the giggles
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | I'm serious! |
15:06 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I take it he won't be leading the vice squad :-) |
15:06 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | I know. that makes it funnier, Carl. |
15:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A volunteer in multiple venues, so it's there in a sense. |
15:07 | Phrynne envisions the tv show | Caledon Vice! |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=405679365 |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | It even has my RL picture. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Spoiler: I'm fatter in RL :) |
15:07 | Aylaria (emberell) | I'm almost certain I weigh less than I do here in RL |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay... let's start with Larky and her report from Commons. |
15:07 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Oh, *I'm* not. Perish the thought |
15:08 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Okay. Well, Phrynne may have been recovering, but she still has a longer list of accomplishments this week. In her own words: |
15:08 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | -- We're going to be finetuning the placement of things in the Plaza, after the lag from RFL subsides. -- New book in the building resources room next to the sandbox: Materials -- Shininess in Second Life by Robin Sojourner. That is the only new book in her series of books on building, as far as I know. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Phrynne's idea of taking it easy reminds me of my brother who would "goof off" at work by mowing the huge lawn of the building in 100 degree heat. |
15:09 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Speaking for myself, I have spent quite a lot of time in the plaza, soing the routine things we do there. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | (He owned the company) |
15:09 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Shiny! (in the Firefly sense) |
15:09 | Phrynne | I *am* taking it easy. I'm not building houses. |
15:09 | Phrynne | and only teaching the occasional En Garde lesson |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Larky, over to you! |
15:10 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | I'm finished, Carl. Thanks. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Time for me. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | I already blew my big news. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | But I have some other as well |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Linden Lab has invited all the leaders of the various help organizations in the Help Education Quorum to a meeting next week about possibly reviving the Community Gateway program. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | I will be attending for Oxbridge. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | And will be quite skeptical |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | In order to get back into bed with them, they would have to compromise a lot. |
15:12 | Gronk Seriman | Think Positively, Carl! |
15:12 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | WOuld that work with this being a homestead? |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | I am. I positively think LL can't be trusted. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | No idea yet. |
15:12 | Gronk Seriman | heh! |
15:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Interesting .... in light of their efforts to substitute something else as workable. |
15:13 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | would that be desirable? |
15:13 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | We are a private organization, right? Can they stop what we do here? |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | If they start out with "okay, you have to buy a full sim and pay us tier", then the answer is plainly "FU and the horse you rode in on" |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | No. |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | They can't. |
15:14 | Phrynne | They cannot force us to fit their criteria, am I correct? |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | Unless they acted way outside the ToS |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | Right |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | We can always say "no thank you, we are not interested" |
15:14 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | they changed the tos before? |
15:14 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Obviously, they can give great amounts of benefits to their own projects. |
15:14 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Only as a condition of being a "gateway". |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | That's true. Technically LL can find a reason to throw any person or group of people out. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | But they are asking us for help |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | I can't imagine there would be a "stick" as in "say yes, or your sim gets it" |
15:16 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | That would be bad PR. |
15:16 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | not officially |
15:16 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | anyway |
15:16 | Glorf Bulmer would hope there would be some serious carrots on offer, though.
15:16 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Guess we wait and see, as per usual. |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | We will see. |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | It is interesting, but you know LL |
15:16 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) looks at Glorf and then looks for Ivan. . .
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | Desmond put a lot of money into Oxbridge for the first Community Gateway program and got screwed over in return. |
15:17 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The problem often has been that LL doesn't know LL -- they don't have a compass (or GIS) that points in a constant direction. |
15:17 | Gronk Seriman | I wonder how much of the meeting will be cheerleading for help with SL2? |
15:17 | Meora (menchor) | LL has certainly burned a lot of bridges with a flamethrower |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | BTW--the entire concept of a Community Gateway was originally based on Oxbridge. We came first, the Lindens say it, and asked Desmond if they could model the program on us. |
15:17 | Carl Metropolitan | Wordsmith is right; LL also has very little institutional memory. |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | Could be, Gronk |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | But the people organizing it are on the SL1 group I believe. |
15:18 | Phrynne | what is the SL1 group? |
15:19 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | The people who run and take care of SL, right? |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | The people who are not all working on SL2 |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | About 1/3rd of LL |
15:19 | Phrynne | ahhhh |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. On to Wordsmith! |
15:21 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Not a lot for this week. Some of you likely noticed earlier that I was catching up on payroll this morning (professor stipends). We did have about a one week data collection outage while I'd been gone. Access to the schedule failed at one point shutting down the class tracker. |
15:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Now that I know the code I'll see when that happens, I can code around it. |
15:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | (We still could use a Dean of Engines) |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | We may need to expand our recruiting for that to all of Caledon |
15:23 | Carl Metropolitan | We also need a Dean of Development (Fundraising and Publicity). Aylaria has taken the lead on the fall event, but isn't going to take on the entire job. |
15:23 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Back to working on a "how to handle a griefing" writeup, including advice and options for returning the desired stuff and not our stuff. |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | I guess it is time for questions now! |
15:25 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | No wait... Wordsmith has something else tos ay |
15:25 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Aylaria and I did talk about the fall fundraiser. |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | to say |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | You are first after Wordsmith finishes, Gronk |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | So we're on the same page there. |
15:26 | Aylaria (emberell) nods.
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Gronk, your question? |
15:27 | Gronk Seriman | Has there been any progress in returning the Quest to its former frustrating glory? |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | I don't know. Has anyone else heard from Marion on it? |
15:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | He's sent out his weekly statistics but not mentioned the quest. |
15:28 | Carl Metropolitan | I will email him. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Email sent |
15:30 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We still have the hole from where Amber was and I'm not sure Marion believes that the dust has settled. |
15:30 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Rasies hand |
15:30 | Gronk Seriman | Probably true. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | Andrea! |
15:30 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Des said he was not planning to put in a filler |
15:30 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | whether he moves more around. shruggs |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Hmm... Well, I can't afford a homestead, so not much I can do about it. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you Andrea |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Next question? |
15:31 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | raises hand |
15:31 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Miss Andrea? |
15:31 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | should the info on your linkedin page be out for public consumption, or should the chat log be edited? |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | It is public |
15:32 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | ok thanks |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | I link my RL and SL all over the place |
15:32 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | noted |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | I think I've even blogged it at one point. |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | My linkedin, not SL. I blog tons on SL (though not as much lately) |
15:33 | Carl Metropolitan | http://jcarlhenders.tumblr.com/ <== Carl's Blog |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan relentlessly self-promotes
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? |
15:34 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | chirp chirp, chirp chirp |
15:35 | Gronk Seriman | Thumbs up for the continued tweaking of the Plaza. It's so much more useful and comfortable now. |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you. Phrynne has some improvements I will be helping with next week. |
15:36 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Some more tweaking of bench placement seems likely. |
15:36 | Carl Metropolitan | and she will be doing something with the gazebo and wishing well, too |
15:36 | Phrynne | Gazebo first; the wishing well needs more thought |
15:36 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | I have watched carefully, and can reassure all concerned that the expected influx of catgirls to eat fish has not materialized. |
15:37 | Josain Zsun | wishing well ? |
15:37 | Glorf Bulmer has no idea what Larky means
15:37 | Phrynne | Though we have had a couple of people show up with enormous fishing rods |
15:37 | Aylaria (emberell) | We have, however, had a few noncatgirls with fishing rods to shoo off |
15:37 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | hmm should the wishing well also be a donation location |
15:37 | Phrynne | there is *no reason* for a 5-meter fishing rod in Oxbridge |
15:37 | Phrynne | Yes, Andrea, that's part of the plan. |
15:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Although there have been those of the pointed ears observed next to the koi pond. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | Wishing well is hidden off behind the Hall of Avatar Motion |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | It does nothing |
15:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Which could change. |
15:38 | Phrynne | I have some ideas for it but I am still looking at how feasible they are |
15:39 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Perhaps folks could fish in the wishing well. . . . |
15:39 | Carl Metropolitan | I would like to ask people about the idea of having some games like board games or en garde available at Oxbridge. I know we have the 20 person limit, but with Trivia and Q&A up here, we rarely come close to hitting it. |
15:39 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) joins Phrynne with her squirrels
15:40 | Phrynne | En Garde is a problem -- it has weapons |
15:40 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | the area just behind the gazebo has a dock? |
15:40 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | or opens onthe water |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, a dock. |
15:40 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | perhaps the fishing could be done from there |
15:40 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | with a rezzer |
15:40 | Phrynne | Not the sharks! |
15:40 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Would it be too much to make a sign saying that En Garde weapons are allowed in this area of Oxbridge, only |
15:41 | Phrynne | They don't unrez when the game is over |
15:41 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | I think most of the comments about fishing are jokes, Andrea |
15:41 | Aylaria (emberell) | Unofishial jokes |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | Good point |
15:41 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | weapons are allowed inthe lecture hall for emote clases |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | Maybe just a few board games? |
15:41 | Phrynne | eep! |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | Something for people to think about. |
15:41 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | BAckgammon set in the entrance hall? |
15:41 | Phrynne | Shuffleboard? Badminton? |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | I'm sure I could get Karsten Rutledge to donate some. |
15:42 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) raises an eyebrow at Ayla and fails to hide her grin.
15:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I thought there were a few games by the shoppe in front of the train station (Vox Café) |
15:42 | Carl Metropolitan | They are. |
15:42 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | there are |
15:42 | Carl Metropolitan | I think |
15:42 | Phrynne | There's checkers, but I'm not sure if it works. |
15:42 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Next question? |
15:42 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Sorrowman had a working chess board... |
15:43 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Oh, one general SL bit, on migration to the Viewer Manage Marketplace. https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Commerce/Viewer-Managed-Marketplace-Released-Migration-Begins-July-23/ba-p/2949604 |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | I wonder if a class on Marketplace would be useful for us to consider? |
15:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | (Makes a note) |
15:46 | Aylaria (emberell) | It would benefit our students, if we have someone able to teach that. I know we get a bit of trouble when someone accidentally finds their market place in a foreign language, or with buying freebies and the like. |
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | If anyone is inspired to write and or teach such a class, give Wordsmith an IM and see what you can work out. |
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Any other questions or comments? |
15:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Oh I did have something I picked up on the NCI groups. They'd been hunting for scripting instructors and not getting any. Just an interesting tidbit. |
15:49 | Carl Metropolitan | I'm not surprised. It's hard to find good scripting teachers |
15:50 | Carl Metropolitan | Who is doing the looking for them? |
15:50 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Blanking -- person who started NCI. |
15:51 | Aylaria (emberell) | That would be Brace Coral, I believe |
15:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Right. Brace was involved in that conversation. Thanks Aylaria. |
15:52 | Carl Metropolitan | She's good at finding people to do stuff |
15:52 | Carl Metropolitan | If I could pry her away from NCI, I would get her as Dean of Development :) |
15:53 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Just found it interesting in terms of expanding our own scripting classes and snagging a Dean of Engines. |
15:54 | Carl Metropolitan | I wonder if Sir Zen might have more time now that his life is a bit more settled? |
15:54 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Perhaps. I can ping him. |
15:54 | Gronk Seriman | Magic is any technology you don't understand. |
15:55 | Gronk Seriman | ...and I don't understand scripting or engines. |
15:55 | Carl Metropolitan | Any final questions? |
15:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Questions for the final? |
15:57 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Thanks for coming everyone! |
15:57 | Phrynne gives the squirrel the rest of the nuts, pats it and sends it on its way
15:57 | Glorf Bulmer | Thank you Carl, Wordsmith, and Larky! |
15:57 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you, Deans! And Chancellors! |
15:57 | Aylaria (emberell) | Thanks you for taking the time to keep us informed, and to answer our questions. |
15:57 | Badass Fae (larkylouz) | Take care everyone. |
