15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A with the Deans! |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We are here to answer any of your questions about Oxbridge, Caledon, or Second Life. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First we will have short(ish) reports from the various deans. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
First, our co-Deans of Commons, Larky and Phrynne! |
15:04 |
|
Phrynne pokes BadAss's flower stem |
15:04 |
|
Wordsmith Jarvinen Checks to make sure this is a moderate sim. |
15:05 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Well, I've been off this week and am just now back the past few days. We've been doing the usual keeping the plaza swept and clean. |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Wordsmith has done a great job getting the database web-ready, so I've been working on a notecard for that, for tutor expectations and rewriting a couple from the faculty kit. |
15:06 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) checks the lowered durability of his ejection broom |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Phyrnne always spends a lot of time in the plaza and has been busy with her broom. Phrynne? |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
Yes, I've been dusting some of the corners, and checking out the furniture to make sure there are no moths. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
On to me then? |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
She's so good at this! |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
Also, we've been looking at how to deal with requests from people who want to do surveys in Second Life. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
and we are putting together guidelines on that. |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
That responsibility has been moved from Word and Carl to Commons |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
And we are reviewing our ideas in common. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Asking for their Institutional Review Board paperwork is a good way to separate the real researchers from the "do my homework for me" people :) |
15:08 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
good |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would also suggest you might ask Aevalle Galicia-Constantine for some advice, if you need it. |
15:09 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
We're also discussing the idea of requiring that their surveys focus on SL questions, both as a way to ensure privacy and to teach them that "this.is.a.world" |
15:09 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Good idea, Carl. thanks |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Although, many times, classroom assigned surveys don't require IRB review, the course being approved and the responsibility laying with the professor. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She's just finishing a PhD and did use Oxbridge for her research. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
nods |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Then a copy of a note indicating approval of the research plan from the professor, perhaps? |
15:10 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
hmm |
15:10 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Most likely, for undergrads, yes. |
15:10 |
|
Phrynne wonders where we will install the fax machine |
15:10 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Probably near the coffee maker |
15:10 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
or name of professor, class, and university |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, at the minimum, institution, class, and professor's name. |
15:11 |
Meora (menchor) |
and a reminder that there are a lot of people who try surveys here |
15:12 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Oxbridge not being wholly representative of SL, we have discussed encouraging people to move beyond a new-folks area to learn more about SL. |
15:12 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
They should be referred to us. Thanks Meora |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. On to me. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We have a SL12B display this year. Don't rush out to see it; It's identical to our VWBPE display :) |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next year I will have to come up with a new display for both! |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I talked to Jayleden and got a bunch of information about the fundraiser she was planning to run, and will be talking to Aylaria and Aeval about how to move forward this week. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's great that we are represented and visible. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We have been at every SLnB since there was an Oxbridge, I think. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And at ever VWBPE, too |
15:15 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
VWPE??? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I also talked to Ravelli this week and learned he's been busy making mesh buildings for the rest of Oxbridge and has very nice drafts completed for the Cathedral and the Train Station and the Hall of Caledon. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education. |
15:16 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Nice! |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Very |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He's done amazing work. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Finally, I'm still looking for a Dean of Development. |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
yes -- I'm glad he kept on doing it. I thought he was going to dump it all after Martini left. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's great that he's continued with that. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There was also something else, but I've forgotten it. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will remember eventually :) |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'll be away for a RL conference the week of the 29th, so I've been getting scripting/infrastructure usable before I go (and so I can concentrate on classes once back). |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Last week I had the new schedule design up (still need the data part from Tali). |
15:20 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
If you are away so soon, may I ask a question while you are still here? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This week, I finished up the web interface on the ban manager so that it is usable for all but record deletions. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, Batista. |
15:20 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Well, there's that professor teaching clothes making on Sunday afternoons - and that poor lady is using a script from Mr Jarvinen, saying it's for "equal distance" - and it's not doing "equal distance" of items at all - absolutely not doing what it says ... That script seems to be very bad ... - and that poor lady has no idea what to do ... |
15:20 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
We could enter a blank record, with only username, in the meantime. |
15:21 |
Dusti Fenris (dusti.mccallen) |
yes others will be here |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Also made a replacement for the "Class in Session" sign that Phrynne had noticed was gone. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A record with a just a username and a status of "to be removed". |
15:21 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
good idea, Word |
15:22 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Are you Deans just talking to yourselves??? |
15:22 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Yep |
15:22 |
Phrynne |
We talk to something like 120 people coming through Oxbridge every week, give or take a few. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can check that, but last I heard it was working. And are you meaning what it means by equal distance? |
15:23 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Says it's placing prims at equal distance - and it does NOT |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Means equal spacing in terms of distance around the ellipse. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Rather than at equal angles around the ellipse. |
15:24 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
well, seems it 's NOT doing that, AT ALL |
15:24 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Lousy script |
15:24 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
From what I have seen using that script, Batista, it works quite well to space the pieces according to the paramaters I set |
15:25 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
You might have messed with the notecard in some way and altered the way it distributes, but I've been using it rather on and off myself |
15:25 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
With all due respect, Mr. Corleone, I think such concerns should be brought to Wordsmith privately. This is not a forum for criticizing instructors. I am uncomfortable and speaking for myself. |
15:25 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
From what I've see, Aylaria, it does NOT do thaT AT ALL - GET AN ELLIPSE A 0 !:%; b 0 !:=; AND SEE FOR YOURSELF |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Enough |
15:26 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
It's not just you, Larky. Please calm down, Mr. Corleone. If you would like, I can take some time to help you through what I have learned of the script after this is over. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know it can be frustrating when something is not working, but please talk--politely--to Wordsmith after this meeting. |
15:26 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Solve that , Carl - so your schools promises are noet as wrong as they are now |
15:27 |
Phrynne |
Mr. Corleone, kindly moderate your language. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, did you have anything else from your area? |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Considering you have not paid a L$ for the script, Mr. Corleone, you seem strangely upset. |
15:28 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Well, - being veeery polite - what is the offuicial response? |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
" I know it can be frustrating when something is not working, but please talk--politely--to Wordsmith after this meeting." |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... taking questions from the audience now. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The official response is that I will talk with the instructor and see if she has had problems with it. |
15:29 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Saying - very poluitely - Wordsmith, your script is not as good as you say ... |
15:30 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I have had a thought as to the tutor program, that I would like to discuss with one of the deans of Commons if there is time to do so. But I think that's a matter, much like your own, Batista, best left for IM |
15:30 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
so go on now, deans, and continue to gratulate yoursel |
15:30 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
vesw on how great you are ... |
15:30 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
I'll be around after the meeting for a bit, Aylaria. Your gentle feedback is always welcome. |
15:30 |
Phrynne |
I can be here also. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. He seemed really strangely upset because of a possible bug in a script, and unwilling to deal constructively with it. |
15:31 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I'll be sure to stick around. I agree, Carl. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Questions now? |
15:32 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I'm not sure that it requires both of your feedback, but I'm happy to share my thoughts. |
15:33 |
|
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) wonders if dozing dragons drop into dilightful snores |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I probably should not have ejected him then turned around and asked for other questions |
15:34 |
|
Phrynne takes out the formerly invisible platter of brownies baked on dragonfire earlier today and passes them around |
15:34 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
oooo, yum |
15:35 |
|
Aylaria (emberell) snatches a brownie from the platter |
15:36 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I guess I can offer a question |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please do. |
15:36 |
Josain Zsun |
Had they been Batistafire, they would be burnt. |
15:36 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
is there any news as to what's being done with the hole in Caledon at large? |
15:36 |
Phrynne |
The place where Amber was? |
15:37 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Yeah |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have not heard. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Has anyone been around late at night when Desmond makes announcements? |
15:37 |
Dusti Fenris (dusti.mccallen) |
yes |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Has he said anything? |
15:38 |
Dusti Fenris (dusti.mccallen) |
havent heard anything on my end yet |
15:38 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I saw him mention the other night that he would do something about it, but he wasn't specific |
15:38 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
He /is/ working on i, from my most recent information |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, filling in the hole with something, rather than rethinking Caledon with the topology of a donut (torus). |
15:40 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Or, making more donuts, so that it doesn't look out of place |
15:40 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I can't say. |
15:40 |
Phrynne |
Perhaps we'll have a William Blake sea. |
15:40 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Admittedly, probably not that. |
15:40 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Maybe a place to run the Indianapolis 500 - with Model Ts, of course. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm sure he will figure out something |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:40 |
Josain Zsun |
Happy Summer Solstice. Days will start getting shorter. |
15:41 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Oh, good. |
15:41 |
|
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) sighs with relief and looks forward to the time changing again. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Getting hotter too, but I like shorter days |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think I'm a vampire at heart |
15:42 |
|
Carl Metropolitan flees the sun |
15:42 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I'm familiar with this sun thing you speak of. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other comments or questions? |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, if you get a chance, can you check on a possible issue with that script with Cymbal? Just because the person complaing was a jerk, doesn't mean there might not be a problem. |
15:45 |
Josain Zsun |
That person was just as upset about some other trivial issue in a not too recent past Q&A. |
15:46 |
Josain Zsun |
And just as polite then. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What was his issue? I don't remember it. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, I already plan to. She had tested it prior to teaching. The issue of equal space versus equal angle is actually minor for any ellipse suitable for a skirt, but still interesting. |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I guess that's it for today. |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The original rez-loop script that Ged did, used equal angle increments. He included a comment on this. I became interested when I worked on the script to add a correction to bring it close to equal spacing in distance rather than equal angle. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks. |
15:48 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Thank you, Deans, for taking the time to keep us informed and to answer our questions! |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks to all of you for coming. |
15:49 |
Dusti Fenris (dusti.mccallen) |
thank you |
