15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As usual, we will start out with reports from our deans, and then take questions. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let's start with the co-Deans of Commons, Phrynne and Larky. |
15:03 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
um, yes, um. |
15:03 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Too busy talking about our relative glitches here. |
15:03 |
Phrynne |
We've been doing what we do. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And what is it you do when you are doing what you do? |
15:04 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
I've asked for some time off, but before that, I was working on ... yes, doing what we do. Lots of time in the plaza, especially for Phrynne. The DB. Rewriting the ban notecard, which is aka as War and Peace. |
15:04 |
Phrynne |
Stay out in the plaza and help people find where they're going. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, Larky will be taking a few weeks off. |
15:05 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
One week, Carl, even if it seems like two to you. ;^) |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But will be back in time for Phyrnne to take a few weeks off, too :) |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
I'll be away starting July 2 for a while. |
15:05 |
Phrynne |
definitley a week, probably a little more. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
*definitely |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The Co-Deans of commons is working out well. |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
I like it very much. |
15:06 |
Phrynne |
I think it works out very well having two of us. |
15:06 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
nodds |
15:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I can spend more time in the plaza, if it'd help take a load off of you guys |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
With overlapping but still different time coverage. |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
And we work well together. Aylaria, honey, you already seem to be there a lot. Have fun, too. |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
(says the expert at taking time off!) |
15:07 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I have lots of fun! I've been just exploring all morning with some lovely dragons! |
15:08 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
:^) |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I need to talk to Aylaria and Aeval about the fall event this week. I'm sorry, but due to RL work and lack of RL sleep (TMI: I have spells of insomnia and depression sometimes), I did not get to you guys. |
15:08 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Alaria does have a big presence :-) |
15:08 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I entirely understand, Carl. Take your own time and make sure you are al lwell - I'll keep my self available for what works best with you |
15:09 |
Meora (menchor) |
Rumor has it they are feeding her the next griefer as a reward |
15:09 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Just as a note. I have plans set for the fundraiser event on the 31st. |
15:09 |
Phrynne |
of which month? |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's part of ban management. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have nothing to report really other than that I'm nearly done with the SL12B display for Oxbridge, which looks nearly identical to the VWBPE display :) |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Could you tell me about it after the Q&A. I didn't really get a good debrief from Jayleden over what was planned. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We also badly need a new Dean of Development. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
OKay |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's all for me. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith? |
15:11 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
And a Dean of Engines. And Assistant Dean of Information! |
15:11 |
Jorge Serapis |
What does the office entail, Carl? Specifically? |
15:11 |
Sandie Harbour |
Raises had |
15:11 |
Jorge Serapis |
Dean of Development? |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
RL took a cut of a few days for a meeting. Beyond that catching up on payroll and digging data out of emails. We now, since May 19, have had 1437 touches to the free avatars, generally with multiples by each person. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I still have to catch up on the adboard touches. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you think that the script is okay to give to Phrynne to put into other freebie boxes for getting statistics? Or does that take more stuff on your end that you need time on? |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've got a working system with commons to enter both old and new data on bans, and am close to having an online manager (it's already a viewer/searcher). |
15:14 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
May I put in that Wordsmith has spent hours on this project, making a very useful tool for us. |
15:14 |
Phrynne |
I'm not sure I can put scripts into any of the freebies -- none of them are in my name. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can give Phrynne the two scripts required. The touch-counter script and a give-inventory folder script that doesn't give other scripts. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hmm. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, we need to start sorting that stuff out. Are any in my name? |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or Martini's? |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I can probably get Martini to give you mod rights. |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
One may be in Martini's, maybe two. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can check, because those I can drop scripts into. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We may need to just do some repackaging. |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
I know I couldn't rearrange or move them. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But if we are doing that, then we need to come up with a "standard" package design. Because I'm anal that way :) |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
I've wanted to rework the display in the Railroad Station, because some of the nice ones are hidden in the back. |
15:17 |
Phrynne |
but I do like the variation in texture and design -- it helps one stand out from another. |
15:17 |
Phrynne |
Not that some couldn't be improved -- there are several that have been there since at least 2009. |
15:17 |
Phrynne |
or else were made in 2009, even if they weren't there yet. |
15:18 |
Phrynne |
but I'm sure we can come up with something that works. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Maybe like Jayleden did with the Winter Auction. Just a common "frame" |
15:19 |
Phrynne |
nods |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The reason I want to do this, is to discourage people from taking our freebie boxes and selling them |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That was a problem at NCI |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But if the box has "Oxbridge" and "Free" on it, that discourages that sort of thing. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oh, I've pretty much got the latest translator version distributed to staff that want or need it. As a June 4th, we'd used about 50k of 2 million characters and we reset on the 13th. |
15:21 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
It might bear mentioning that to the folk who use the translator - just to help them loosen up a little and apply it to other potential teaching situations |
15:22 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
We've been consistently far under budget, from what I have heard |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, I did just mention it. ;) |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can I have a copy? |
15:22 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Thanks, aylaria. Good idea! |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yep. |
15:23 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Oh! Is Carl on staff here, Wordsmith???? |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Was about to mention that you're one of the ones I hadn't gotten it to yet. |
15:23 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I'll let others who frequent the plaza know, too. We don't want it to be an underused resource (though its use should still be relegated to what actually calls for it) |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I wonder... if we are that far under budget, maybe we could sell no-transfer versions to other help areas :) |
15:24 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
thank you aylaria |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or, Wordsmith could, and keep the money--after all it was his work! |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Just right click and select add -- should show up lower center screen. There's a readme and language code file(s) in the contents. |
15:25 |
BarBar2Banter - V1.2.1 |
BarBar2Banter Version 1.2.1 |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perhaps .... have to see where the usage stabilizes at. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you again |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Anything else from the Deans? |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... Let's take questions. |
15:27 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I actually do have a question this week! |
15:28 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
If I remember correctly, professor Charisma is no longer able to teach her introduction to RP class at the time on the schedule - is someone else planning to take that over? I've seen a few students gathering in there when it comes up |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, she negotiated moving it from Sunday to Monday, but hasn't been on then either. I need to catch her and discuss why? |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith can take that one. It's a popular class, I'd hope someone else could take it over if she can't do it. |
15:29 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Well, it's still on the schedule - as uncanceled - I think it might be causing a bit of confusion |
15:30 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
If that's something still in the works though, I think it should be fine, I just wanted to clarify what direction that was headed in so I can inform those who ask (if there are any such folk) |
15:30 |
Jorge Serapis |
*raises hand* |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Jorge? |
15:31 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Wasn't MichealNeff subbing for her for a while? |
15:31 |
Jorge Serapis |
We spoke before about possibly packaging up existing classes and presenting them in times suitable to the European market. |
15:31 |
Jorge Serapis |
I have two and possibly 4 volunteers willint to beta the concept. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's a good and popular class. I hope we can keep it. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That may work best if a willing teacher approaches the current instructor, works that out, and lets me know for a blank spot on the schedule. |
15:33 |
Jorge Serapis |
so what's the best way to source the best possible classes to repeat? |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm going to use a "distributed model" rather than trying to be an intermediary. |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
What hours would be best for European students? |
15:34 |
Jorge Serapis |
I'm assuming 6-9 pm GMT, which is 10 am to 1 pm SLT. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If they are running 9 hours later, then a 9pm slot is 6am for them (i.e. before work) |
15:35 |
Jorge Serapis |
8 hours earlier than SLT, rather. |
15:35 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Depends on the exact timezone. |
15:36 |
Jorge Serapis |
I'm basing my estimate on GMT, as most European countries are within 2 hours of it. |
15:36 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Europe is Greenwich+1-5 hours |
15:36 |
Meora (menchor) |
Europe is 9 Britain is 8 |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Once we get Europe covered, people will want us to do China/Australia/New Zealand :) |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As Meora says, for a 1st order estimate. |
15:37 |
Jorge Serapis |
Sounds fine by me, if we can get that kind of staff coverage. |
15:37 |
Jorge Serapis |
But which classes would be te best to repeat for the European community? |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
We would likely need tutors who can be present at those hours, also. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Instructors, Phrynne, instructors... ;) |
15:38 |
Jorge Serapis |
We do have quite a few tutors during those hours. We now have possible staff. all we need now is to figure out which classes are the best to repeat. |
15:38 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Not just instructors, but tutors also to help guide the errant straggler or see a new person to the right spot so the teacher doesn't have to |
15:38 |
Phrynne |
Instructors, yes, but perhaps tutors as well. |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And occasional bouncers.... |
15:40 |
BarBar2Banter - V1.2.1 |
Inactivity Auto-Shutdown |
15:40 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
It is always nice to have plaza staff around when I am teaching. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've no aversion to class proposals at other hours, but the material is often put together by the current instructor. What I will monitor is that a proposed instructor is competent in the topic --- at least as far a presenting and answering associated questions. |
15:42 |
Jorge Serapis |
.. and which class is needed most during European evening hours. |
15:42 |
Jorge Serapis |
or classes are needed, rather. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next questions? |
15:43 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Raises hand. |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Miss Andrea? |
15:44 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I just wanted to clarify my earlier statement. After talking to jayle a few weeks back about the fund-raiser this fall. I started planning a music event for October the 31st. It will start early and the performers are spaced out so people can have a break. The preliminarily plans are to have 2 live performers and one dj. Four hours in all. A costume contest will probably happen during the dj event. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for things they would like to do during or between the events to help raise funds. Please let me know. Thank you. Oh, nothing is set in stone yet except for the performers and we have plenty of time to iron out any new details. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Andrea. |
15:45 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
yw |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is no reason that can't go on. |
15:45 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
nodds |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you have any sort of notecard you gave Jayleden on the details? |
15:45 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Details were finalized this week |
15:45 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
and yes let me find what i have so far |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay... Next question? |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
ENTERAINMENT: In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which of the knights ended up being eaten by the others? |
15:49 |
|
Gronk Seriman raises a paw |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Gronk! |
15:49 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And there was much rejoicing... |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
Where are we in the Campus Meshification Project? Is it pretty much done? |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. There is more to be done |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The cathedral and the Hall of Caledon |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I tried to do the Hall of Caledon, but though I got something that looked cool in Blender (untextured), the physics was all screwed up. |
15:52 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
rasies hand |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Andrea |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
(BTW--if anyone is good at mesh and wants to try some of the other buildings, let me know) |
15:52 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Does that need to have a priority given the current staffing reduction? |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The current staffing reduction? |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Dean shortage. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ah. Deans don't do the important work, so not really :) |
15:53 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Thank you dean Wordsmith. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Meshification isn't a priority. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But if someone has the skills and time, and inclination, that would be cool. |
15:54 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Thank you |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As for staffing reduction, we are just down Jayleden. She did a lot before she left, and I'm looking for a new Dean of Development now |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
(I was joking about "Deans don't do anything important", by the way) |
15:54 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Of course. We all know how hard you folk work to keep Oxbridge running |
15:55 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Ah, I thought we needed a Dean of Engines as well. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, and "actual" Dean of Engines wouldn't hurt. |
15:55 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
To take theload of Dean Wordsmith |
15:55 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
We actually need: Dean of Engines and Asst. Dean of Engines; Dean of Development and Asst., Asst Dean of Information. Who have I forgotten? |
15:56 |
Phrynne |
Is there an assistant chancellor position? |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No, |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thought I guess that kind of defaults to Wordsmith |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you want to be Assistant Chancellor? |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Seeing as you don't have much else to do :) |
15:57 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Crickets chirping |
15:57 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Administrative alts do not count... |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Seriously, if you can't get me, and it is urgent, get Wordsmith |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I am mostly around and let others know when I won't be. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phrynne has summoned me inworld a couple of times. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you can't get me you can also skype me. Even when I'm not on in SL I can often be reached via skype |
15:58 |
|
Phrynne puts away magic wand of summoning |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Also, to be clear -- Carl is where the buck stops as to Oxbridge matters. As Des puts it, he's just the estate guy. |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But anyone who researches me can find my information. I can't be doxxed because I'm totally public :) |
16:02 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Yes, but that still takes a bit of effort! It's surprising what a bit of trouble can do as a deterrent for the fell of mind |
16:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
"Carl Metropolitan" real name in google gets my real name in the third result |
16:03 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Yep, Now i can get ahold of carl day or night. Muwhahahahaha |
16:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, there aren't that many true emergencies that won't be covered by Caledon EMs on a regional basis. |
16:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
and in my First Life box, my email address has my real name as part of it. |
16:04 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Even so, I just want you to be safe and unflustered. 's all I meant with my advice. |
16:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's cool. I appreciate it. |
16:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
With my luck I will start getting calls from DavX :( |
16:05 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
:-) |
16:05 |
Meora (menchor) |
lol |
16:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We are over our time now, if there are no more questions, everyone can head out. |
16:06 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Thank you so much for taking the time to keep us informed, and to answer our questions today! |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye |
16:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you all for coming! |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
16:06 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me |
16:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It would be downright lonely without you coming. |
