15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The Deans will give a brief run down of any news in their departments, and then we will take questions about Caledon, Oxbridge, Second Life, and anything else we can answer. I'm good with trivia :) |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please have a seat DJ |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal, Dean of Information is up first. |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Go Lindal |
15:02 |
Lindal Kidd |
Thank you Carl. I have put up a Language Vendor that provides some of our introductory notes in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. It's at the exit end of the arrival hall on the left. |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
also I will be sending out a minor update of the Faculty Kit this week |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The people appearing on stage are my fault. I gave the wrong SLURL |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
our alert staff have already caught some things! |
15:03 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
Oh. Sorry. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good news all around. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Anything else? |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
that's it! |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can go back to your cooking then :) |
15:04 |
Lindal Kidd |
ha! |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal was busy with making something delicious when we started. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky, news from Commons? |
15:04 |
|
Lindal Kidd rolls up her sleeves and runs to the kitchen |
15:05 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Big news from Commons. Phrynne is now a Co-Dean with me, starting officially in June, but we have already started to work together. Phrynne, do you want to join me on stage today? |
15:05 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Phrynne has inventoried the freebies in preparation for revamping and organizing that program. |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) whispers |
She's also working towards getting the 30-day age limit removied on |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They will be sharing the responsibility of commons and instituting two big new programs, the first being the freebie overhaul |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
COU freebies. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's already been done. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
[15:06] BadAss Fae (larkylouz) whispers: She's also working towards getting the 30-day age limit removied on |
15:06 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Also, we are working through the various ban lists to figure out who can be removed, and in the process creating records for the future. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Keep all the Daves, please :) |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
We've discussed the Mentor Program we've been asked to develop, and are close to a presentation to the other Deans. |
15:07 |
Phrynne |
Where would you like us to keep them, Dean? |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Kamilah has decreed a Caledon wide ban for him. |
15:07 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Dav2 isn't even up for discussion! |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wonderful |
15:08 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
What have I forgotten, Phrynne? |
15:08 |
Phrynne |
Nothing, I think. |
15:08 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
so there you have it. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. On to me, I guess. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal had to run, but she needs a new Assistant Dean of Information. Someone with skills in graphic design and access to Illustrator & Photoshop or PaintShop Pro would be a plus. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please contact her if you are interested. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or, I'd imagine, Gimp. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith is now an EM, as well as Larky. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So we have three EMs on staff to help cover griefing. |
15:10 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
An EM? |
15:10 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
You are the third, Carl? |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Estate Manager |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Someone with super-powers over the sim |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, I am the third. |
15:10 |
|
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) nods |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the need for super caution that goes with them. |
15:10 |
|
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) sits on her hands. |
15:10 |
Josain Zsun |
Is there a current list for reference in time of need? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Desmond has spoken to and is speaking to JJ Drinkwater about the Caledon Library rezzing situation, and we should work that out soon. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But I don't have it memorized, so I will have to look when I get back to Oxbridge. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Jorge Serapis, has one or is updating one. He'd asked me about the possibility of a HUD that, given a sim, would tell which EMs are online for it. |
15:12 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
oh, that would be handy! |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, the "Building Contest" parcel on the border of Oxbridge in Oxbridge Village ( next to the Oxbridge Village stone circle ) has been cleared and returned to Commonwealth. People will no longer expect us to clean up and patrol and area we had no powers over, but showed up in Oxbridge's name. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It looks fairly simple do do, given data on who the EMs are. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's the parcel just north of this one. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Desmond has not rented it yet. We may (if it is available), and funds permit, and we have a use for it, rent it for Oxbridge in the future. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Carl, that brings up another matter. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To rent it with 468 prims would be about 1000L$ per week, so it would be a substantial commitment. We would need to have a good reason to have it. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Once Jayle is past finals, I was hoping the two of you might work out a budget and see if we could up the professor stipend somewhat. |
15:15 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
The question becomes how long will it be available and if when needed |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. That is something we can definitely look hard at. Do you think it would help you recruiting more teachers? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
(the answer is "yes, of course, you idiot!" |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, and as much may motivate the creation process for classes, which is time consuming as well as upload consuming. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think we have enough money to do that. But we need to take a careful look first. |
15:17 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Perhaps the patron program should be expanded? |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But, I also don't want to do that without a look at reserves entering into next year and other considerations such as need for that parcel. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is a possiblity, Andrea |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is also going to be a big fall fundraising even on the scale of the winter auction, too. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's also worth looking at what comes in from the lecture hall coins. |
15:18 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Bring in those willing to donate while they are ready to donate and able |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So far the patron program is working well and covering our tier with a bit on top. |
15:19 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Jayle works hard and successfully at that program, Andrea. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And the sponsor program has been reinvigorated under Jayle |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We also have two large display ads at the stone circle we need to work on selling. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So there is money out there to be grabbed :) |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Speaking of which, over the past 15 weeks our mean touches per week on the ad boards is about 57 plus or minus 15. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Most of that is coming from the boards outside the lecture hall, but not exclusively. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, your turn now. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(A touch representing a notecard given to a person). |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm done |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Translators that continue to operate in no-script zones are out to most of the helper staff. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Excellent news. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've been catching up on class and touch statistics. Likely plots by next week. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Are you keeping well under the character limit so far? |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We've got clothing classes in the works. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've been talking with Cymbal Constantine about a prim skirt class -- she's given me an excellent outline. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And talking with Jasmin Jolbey about a class on system clothes. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's still needed. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Cymbal might also do a class on making eyes. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Aylaria, were you able to make any sense out of the notes I gave you on creating with full perm mesh? |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi Lovejoy |
15:25 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I've taken a look at them, but I haven't had any real time to devote to that unfortunately. I've been quite busy. |
15:25 |
lovejoy2199 |
Hello Carl |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Keep me and Wordsmith in the loop. |
15:26 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I had plans t odo so this week, as things quiet down, if that's still wanted. |
15:26 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I will, at that. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, if no one has announced it, Larky and Wordsmith are looking for a new Photo Salon teacher, so please contact them if you are interested. |
15:27 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Yes, Please. We are looking for someone to rotate with Meora and possibly Renee, who have been teaching it for a long time. |
15:28 |
Elerve |
hello |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hello |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Jayle is out with Finals, so no report from Development this week. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome to Deans' Q&A. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Time for questions and comments and suggestions from you all! |
15:29 |
Meora (menchor) |
Photo Salon |
15:29 |
Meora (menchor) |
we are making another little change |
15:29 |
Meora (menchor) |
we have a presentation 1 week and show the next we are going to alternate between a "technical" presentation ands a shoot a theme presentation |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If you want that "official", just give me an updated description that includes that. |
15:30 |
Meora (menchor) |
we can do that |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which reminds me that I have one more item. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please go. We don't seem to be overwhelmed with questions. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Tali, although no longer Dean of Engines, is continuing with a major revision of the web interface she did for scheduling. |
15:32 |
badhabitbunny |
I am interested in resources for RL research within SL. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
My understanding is that the new one will have lecture definitions separate from the scheduling. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It will also have a two week scheduling window, current and next week. If you look at the schedule image in here, I've got a prototype up of displaying that range of data on the current kiosks. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I noticed that it was now displaying two-week class schedule |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It may revert, but the image generator is in place. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I think Badhabitbunny had a question? |
15:35 |
badhabitbunny |
Yes. Sorry to interject. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. This is a Q&A. That's what we are here for! |
15:36 |
badhabitbunny |
I joined SL to do research on religious congregations in Viritual Reality for school. Since joining I actually stumbled upon the Vcara exhibition at Stanford's library and my mind was blown. |
15:36 |
badhabitbunny |
So I just wonder about any further resources I might be able to use toward this goal. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know there is an active Unitarian Universalism congregation here. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are a number of RL universities that have platforms in SL. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Some are doing social research. |
15:38 |
Josain Zsun |
475 Hits in SL Search |
15:38 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
There are many many religious organizations in SL. Of all sorts. |
15:39 |
Phrynne |
You might have to determine what 'active' means in SL, as opposed to RL |
15:39 |
Josain Zsun |
another 33 under theology |
15:40 |
badhabitbunny |
I have been searching for things I suspect might have a presence here. I am especially curious about the library efforts here. I saw the talk J.J. Drinkwater gave at VCARA. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://www.fuucsl.org/wp/ |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
URL for the First Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation of Second Life! |
15:40 |
badhabitbunny |
Are there information sessions for the library here at Oxbridge? |
15:40 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
there are for one library - let me getyou the notecard |
15:41 |
badhabitbunny |
Thanks! |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, I have a notecard on sacred places in SL that used to be updated, but it is old. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Some may still be at the LMs though |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The is a library group the Mr. Drinkwater manages that does have event announcements. |
15:42 |
Phrynne |
Mr. Bunny, you might also want to look at the religious groups that are listed and contact the people in them. |
15:42 |
Phrynne |
Some may not have land any more, but may meet in other ways |
15:42 |
badhabitbunny |
I have been visiting the churches in SL |
15:43 |
Phrynne |
or at other places than an official church. |
15:44 |
badhabitbunny |
I noticed that you have a lot to deal with estate disposal, what about virtual funerals? |
15:44 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
I am aware of many inworld memorial services. Funerals, not so much? |
15:45 |
badhabitbunny |
Yeah. |
15:45 |
Meora (menchor) |
there is a Linden Memorial Park north of Gaea |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are several memorial parks in SL for people who have died in RL |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are two in Caledon |
15:45 |
Meora (menchor) |
oh wait Corsica |
15:45 |
Phrynne |
There are also memorial plaques in the Chapel of Hope in Mayfair, Caledon |
15:46 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I had a thought about the class schedule, if I might. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Go, Aylaria/ |
15:47 |
badhabitbunny |
Please. |
15:47 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
As it is shown in the current displays, it works rather well - it is easy enough to read, though I feel that sometimes it can be rather hard to tell just at a glance where we stand in relation to classes that might be coming up. might it be possible to add a little glowy rectangle or something around the current day/time to increase the ease of reading for students who have trouble translating it at a glance? |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith? |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not to easily, since changes per day means downloading a new image per day. |
15:50 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
Could you manage a moving pointer based on SL time? |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At least at the moment, I'm trying to stay within the capabilities of the current kiosks. |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
What you see is an image downloaded onto a server manually that then has it's UUID distribute to the various kiosks over about two hours. |
15:51 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I understand. It was just a thought I had, based on some of the questions as to class times and the like that we get in the circle. As it is, it still isn't too difficult to tell! |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It may be possible if/when we do bite the bullet and ferret out the kiosks out in the world and try to get them replaces. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We have a fair number (i.e. the majority) that are not under Oxbridge control. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Could the floating pointer be scripted as a supplemental item and only used for the ones here in Oxbridge? |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Possibly. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Something to think about at least. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I suspect it is one of those things that easy to suggest and really hard to script :) |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A prim that knows its relative position on the upper week given the day. |
15:54 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I figured it might be! |
15:55 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
Oh, come on, just, you know, write a little code. |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not entire. I've a "laser pointer" on the display screen that moves to where the screen is touch. And, since the image is generated by algorithm, the pixel coordinates are well-discribed. |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
described. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. We still need a new Dean of Engines—so Wordsmith doesn't have to be stuck with this stuff! |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's part of the hesitancy ... |
15:57 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
Have Cymbal do it. Of course, it could end up as a sociopathic pointer. |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any more questions? |
15:57 |
|
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) giggles |
15:57 |
Jen O'Connell (jenniferoconnell) |
You mentioned system clothes. What are those? |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The LL original / classic avatars basically have a system for "paint on clothes". There are templates. You texture the template and the textures show up in the correct places. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Non-mesh, non-attachment clothing that is "painted on" to your avatar. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, clothes became a mixture of system clothes and prim clothes. |
15:59 |
NinaDaltontheRedhead |
A question please. Is there a archive of these Q&A meetings? |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Why yes, there is <grins> |
15:59 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
16:00 |
NinaDaltontheRedhead |
Thank you very much |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's six pm, so we are at the end of our scheduled time. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Carl's time zone. |
16:00 |
Phrynne |
:) |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ah. Right |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sorry 4pm SLT |
16:01 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Thank you for taking the time to keep us informed, and to answer our questions! |
16:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Central Time Rulz! |
16:01 |
BadAss Fae (larkylouz) |
Thank you for coming, everyone! |
16:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Goodnight everyone! |
16:01 |
lovejoy2199 |
LOL...Texas time |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And thank you all. |
