Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2015-04-05
15:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Welcome to Q&A with the Deans. |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | We are here to answer your questions about Caledon, Oxbridge, Second Life, and anything else. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | First let me take a moment for any reports from Wordsmith, Jayleden, or Larky (filling in for David) from their areas. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Wordsmith? |
15:05 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Not a lot to report, a lot this past week has been coordinating. For example the security briefing that Josain has arranged. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | I'm going to ask him about that in a moment. |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | Jayleden? |
15:06 | Jayleden Miles | We have gained some new sponsors and had some past sponsors have renewed their sponsorships. |
15:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Good work on that. |
15:07 | Jayleden Miles | thank you |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | She's been doing excellent work. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | Larky, do you have anything to report from Commons? |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Weren't you going to take a break soon for a week or so? |
15:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | She seems to be communing with that box |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Josain, you have been organizing a session on security with Rockcliffe. Do want to say anything related to that? |
15:11 | Josain Zsun | The workshop will be Thursday (4/9) evening at 6PM SLT at Rockcliffe University. I can give a Notecard with LM if interested. The goal being to prepare those here for more effective & efficient response in the event of an even. What you would like the class to cover regarding counter-griefing events? Please let me know when you RSVP. 6 RSVPs sofar. |
15:11 | Josain Zsun | event |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you. |
15:12 | Larkylouz | I strongly encourage any plaza staff who do not have land management skills to attend! |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | And to RSVP to Josain! |
15:12 | Larkylouz | yes |
15:13 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I think the basic goal is to have people stay calm, do what they have the powers to do, and avoid doing damage. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Thank you for helping to organize this. |
15:13 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Time for general question, comments, and suggestions. |
15:13 | Glorf Bulmer | Josain, will you be providing transcripts to others in inconvenient time zones? |
15:14 | Josain Zsun | I'm hoping to capture the chat. |
15:14 | Glorf Bulmer | thanks Josain. |
15:13 | Larkylouz | could you |
15:13 | Larkylouz | comment briefly on the suicide griefing notecard I was sesnding around yestereday, please? |
15:14 | Carl Metropolitan | Oh yes! |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | There is a notecard going around about "suicide bomber griefers" who are supposedly able to use some sort of misshapen mesh item to "permanently destroy a sim and the avatars on it" |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | This, of course, is nonsense. |
15:15 | Carl Metropolitan | All such an item could do would be to crash a sim. |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | And sim crasher scripts/items/etc have been something SL has dealt with for years. |
15:16 | Carl Metropolitan | I would ignore that notecard. |
15:17 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As far as I know, there can be mega-sculpties, but not mega-mesh. |
15:17 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Well, somebody is going to try. And It maybe that whoever wrote that misunderstood something. |
15:17 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Since sculpties are just a visual transformation of a prim (and there are megaprims) |
15:18 | Jayleden Miles | Griefers work on fear. People will believe 'warnings' and griefers tend to know that. Notecards like that are fear creating. |
15:18 | Glorf Bulmer heard something the other day about griefing using a tangle of long, thin mesh objects - sounds like it could be an exaggeration of that.
15:18 | Glorf Bulmer | Tales grow in the telling. |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | Correct. Just ignore that. There is nothing anyone -- other than LL -- can do to permanently destroy a sim or an avatar. |
15:19 | Carl Metropolitan | I will brb. I have to estate ban someone. |
15:20 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Hm. The one ninja griefer who caged me also used elongation script for avatar deformation. |
15:20 | Glorf Bulmer | I still remember the time someone offered to "Blast" ISC chat unless we paid him 500 Lindens. |
15:20 | Josain Zsun | Reading a megaprim discussion earlier made me search for mine. I think I deleted them when the max prim size was increased. |
15:20 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I think I have some left. |
15:20 | Glorf Bulmer | When he didn't get the money, he posted some sort of hex dump into the chat. I think he thought it would magically break the channel somehow! |
15:21 | Josain Zsun | I have a couple used in different builds. |
15:21 | Josain Zsun | I disliked they would shrink when building |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | Wow. I went to Oxbridge to ban an exhibitionist/sex troll and when I come back I can not see the audience. |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | Just empty benches! |
15:22 | Meora (menchor) | we all left |
15:22 | Carl Metropolitan | I will assume you all are still here. |
15:22 | Jayleden Miles | They are. |
15:22 | Josain Zsun | It was a Transparency Bomb |
15:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | They are. I had some of that happen last week. Had to relog. |
15:22 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Lots of things to load... |
15:22 | Jayleden Miles | Well deformer shapes for avatars will make some avatars appear misshapen or elongated. |
15:22 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | We are just digital ghosts now i guess |
15:22 | Larkylouz | Larky is fading, fading, fading away from too much fun |
15:24 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I had to relog to get non-elongated. |
15:24 | Gronk Seriman | We can't lie or fib now. Carl will see right through us! |
15:24 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Hi phrynne |
15:24 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | wb |
15:24 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. Any questions, comments, suggestions? |
15:25 | Larkylouz | LOL Gronk |
15:25 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | No news about building contest possibilities? Some people were asking about that side in the Village... |
15:25 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | *site |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, Elf, any interest in organizing such? |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | I need to get Desmond to decide on what the status of it shall be. |
15:26 | Carl Metropolitan | Aevale no longer needs it |
15:26 | Larkylouz | Elfbiter? I am missing part of the conversation here. |
15:27 | Larkylouz | And Word was missing mine when I was seated further back. |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | But if we take it over, we probably have to pay tier on it. |
15:27 | Carl Metropolitan | As we are already getting the sandbox and the stone circle free in the Village, i would not ask for that parcel as well. |
15:27 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Unfortuantely not at the moment. |
15:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Larky, the edges of this building are not in the same parcel as the rest of it. There's a wee bit of overlap. |
15:29 | Larkylouz | thx |
15:29 | Jayleden Miles | Carl, one of the sponsors was asking me if the Oxbridge Shop was in my department and I said I didn't know and suggested she ask you about the shop. |
15:29 | Gronk Seriman | How does the sandbox work? Is the building over Oxbridge, but the sandbox itself over the Village? |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | That was Martini's initiative. |
15:30 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, exactly Gronk. |
15:30 | Carl Metropolitan | The sandbox is over public land in the Village and uses prims from the surplus and public land prims (Commonwealth land) |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | Jaylden, I think the store falls under your department now. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | If you need to have anything moved, let me know. |
15:31 | Carl Metropolitan | If you need, we can probably get you Martini's mod rights to support that. |
15:32 | Jayleden Miles | Ok. Sounds good. |
15:34 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | While I think of it, Carl has paid Oxbridge tier through 4 August. It's at a higher rate, about 74k per quarter (13 weeks). |
15:35 | Larkylouz | I hope that's L$ and not USD? |
15:35 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. We are now paying high enough tier so that Desmond no longer subsidized the region's costs (save for the land occupied by the library) |
15:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, that's $L. |
15:35 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | There is the thing with the library parcel used for griefing still... |
15:35 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Raises hand? |
15:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And that change was not unexpected. |
15:36 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | To my knowledge, the library is being negotiated. |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. That's being worked on. |
15:37 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | How are we set on the money being collected now that the tier has gone up? |
15:37 | Larkylouz | thanks again to Josain for his help on that. |
15:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We are still in good shape with an additional Fall fundraiser planned. |
15:38 | Jayleden Miles | One way, is that I've opened sponsorships to being able to pay more than 13weeks at a time. They can pay for a years sponsorship if they like. |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And you're booking all of that, yes? |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | I am about to go bug people for this month's patron donations, too :) |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | Send out reminders to everyone who has not paid yet. |
15:40 | Jayleden Miles | Yes. |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | We are set up well |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | I am just waiting for Wordsmith and others to have time to go spend it on more classes! |
15:41 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Any new news on replacement staff? |
15:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Some good suggestions. |
15:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And some recent staff pinged and not necessarily responding. |
15:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | RL can play havoc. |
15:42 | Larkylouz | Were you asking about Dean staff, Andrea? |
15:42 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Overall staffing? |
15:43 | Jayleden Miles | No one has volunteered to be my assistant...guess after what happened to that last one it's scared everyone off. |
15:43 | Carl Metropolitan | What happened to the last one? I wasn't aware you had one before here? |
15:43 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I've been pinch-hitting for some of the simpler "engines" tasks, letting Tali work on finishing up more involved projects. |
15:43 | Morpho (morpho65) | Aw, if I was on at the right times, I'd assist you Jay! |
15:43 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I am unfamiliar with how many people are needed to runthe COU properly and was wondering about our staffng needs |
15:44 | Jayleden Miles | They made him a full dean. (Lucien was my assistant when I was dean of education) |
15:45 | Jayleden Miles | Really - there is no 'time to be on' requirements. It's more about communication as to what is going on. Most of my communications with folks is through notecards. |
15:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We do need an assistant for Jayle, as well as a new Dean and Assist Dean of Engines. |
15:46 | Tempesta Clawtooth (tempesta62.clawtooth) | how does one learn the pre-reqs to become staff? |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | The Dean of Engines job does not have to be a Dean level job if possible volunteers don't want that level of responsiblity. |
15:46 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And, it will be good as David is able to come back to commons (and not before he is ready and able). |
15:46 | Carl Metropolitan | We are happy to call you Mechanic of Engines! |
15:47 | Barbara Collazo | what is Engines? |
15:47 | Jayleden Miles | Folks who want to be tutors need to speak to Larky |
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | "Engines" = coding and web stuff for Oxbridge |
15:47 | Barbara Collazo nods--thank you
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | Engines is a reference to the Analytical Engine of Charles Babbage. |
15:47 | Jayleden Miles | To be a professor speak to Wordsmith |
15:48 | Jayleden Miles | As for deans speak to Carl |
15:51 | Gronk Seriman | Did I hear earlier that a Tutor Meeting was scheduled? |
15:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Tempesta, often staff start out as tutors, to get to know us and vice versa. |
15:51 | Tempesta Clawtooth (tempesta62.clawtooth) | thank you |
15:52 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Sitting near a certain bench, oftentimes. |
15:53 | Carl Metropolitan | Any final questions? |
15:53 | Glorf Bulmer | If you hang around and try to be useful for long enough, you get drawn in.... |
15:53 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There are exceptions to that, but often it's with people who have worked with staff as unofficial tutors. |
15:54 | Josain Zsun | To be liked, just give me lots of L$. ;-) |
15:54 | Gronk Seriman wishes this Alternate Lecture Hall had a Class Schedule Board.
15:55 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) thinks it'd be a good idea
15:55 | Carl Metropolitan | Okay. I think that's it for today. I need for the deans and Larky to stay behind for a brief discussion, if you don't mind. |
15:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We can do the schedule kiosk, Elf. |
15:56 | Larkylouz | okay |
