Carl Metropolitan |
Hello everyone. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It looks like Q&A with Two Deans this afternoon. |
15:01 |
Larkylouz |
Hi all |
15:01 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
greetings larky |
15:01 |
Josain Zsun |
Good Afternoon your Larkness |
15:02 |
Larkylouz |
Hey Andrea, Josain |
15:02 |
Meora (menchor) |
greetings |
15:02 |
Larkylouz |
Meora! |
15:02 |
CeeCee AW (mrsceecee) |
hello.. having probs loading |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Normally, I'd start with asking the various deans for any reports from their areas. So Wordsmith, anything new in Education? |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, it was mostly a RL week for me. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Now it is time to catch up again here. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I have nothing terribly interesting to report either. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I just wanted to thank everyone for all the work they have done dealing with our two big griefer incidents this week. |
15:04 |
CeeCee AW (mrsceecee) |
BRB I have to bounce Not loading here |
15:04 |
Gronk Seriman |
Two?!? I miss all the fun! |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know they are frustrating and disruptive, and the level of professionalism and calm displayed in dealing with them is greatly appreciated. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky, do you have anything to report on from Tutors and (acting) Commons? |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
I'm sure I do, but I just blew in. Give me a few minutes to think, please? |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As is the efforts of those collating how to best deal with them and querying more widely on the same. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No problem. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Josain has been talking to some other places like Oxbridge about griefing. We may end up with a class conducted either by Rockcliffe and/or us for people on how to deal with griefers. That's ongoing. Wordsmith is in the loop on this, too. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Assist Dean Phrynne is working on a anti-griefing writeup. And what Carl just said. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Phrynne is going to be taking a bit of a break for the next week, though, so please don't bother her about Oxbridge stuff for a bit. |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
So much care needs to be taken. We need to teach how to defend and extinguish. Not ho actually start it. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And I also believe that there have been negotiations with Mr. Drinkwater re the library parcel. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. We are trying to get him to set scripts, rezzing, and object entry "off" to non-group members. |
15:10 |
Larkylouz |
I agree. I think it is a fantastic idea to have a class. While nothing is in the development stages yet, staff training is definitely something I am focused on. And so many good people have come to me this week wanting to help with the griefer situation. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Failing that, he's offered to set up an Oxbridge Library group, with eject and return and ban powers there. But he wants some record keeping that may be a bit of a pain. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hello Jayleden |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One of the needs is to get our staff to prioritize (individually and in working with each other) so as to not feel stressed or burn-out. Funding was a critical issue. Having classes and helpers is necessary, but beyond that moer is being done than had been for a while. Nothing in that is critical to where a week or two really matters. |
15:13 |
Larkylouz |
I've been setting up a personal recordkeeping system that I'd be happy to share with other staff and workers when I get it finished. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, Miss knee-jaw. |
15:13 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you Larky |
15:14 |
Rip (euripidesupman) |
:) |
15:14 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
Thank you and hello. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And thanks to Larky for doing her job and a lot of David's while he has been out with medical issues! |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She will be taking an Oxbridge break soon, too. (Even if I have to temp ban her!) |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Heh ;) |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A well-deserved one. |
15:17 |
Larkylouz |
I've spent a good part of the last week focusing on being a sounding board for other folks who are doing great work. Phrynne and Josain have been doing some great work, along with many others of our staff. I hope to start a staff-wide Mutual Admiration Society in the near future. Hats more silly than the one given out when an avatar completes the Quest may be in the near future, to recognize some of you who put in work that no one seems to notice! |
15:17 |
|
Larkylouz sticks a belated tongue out at Carl. ;^) |
15:18 |
Rip (euripidesupman) |
A belated tongue must make mealtime a challenge. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Jayleden, I'm guessing due to exams in RL you don't have a lot to report from your area, but if you have anything, go for it.. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Silly hats can be arranged. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oh, one other thing I can mention. |
15:19 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
I have nothing. I've been working on prizes for the fall event - talking to Nyree about her offerings. That is about it. |
15:19 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
(Midterms are over now though - so I will be able to do more now) |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Great. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Phyrnne among others had been concerned about avatars ejected and ending up in the NW corner. This was actual, not theoretical, and had occurred with 18 on the sim. |
15:21 |
Josain Zsun |
Many sleep there. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I provide her and Larky with a HUD that, after several steps, will teleport an "away" avatar home (given that the wearer has eject rights). |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It only works in Oxbridge and only if an avatar is away. It also won't get those with a homespot in the sim off of it. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Is this ready to use now? |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It is. |
15:23 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
I would guess they land in that corner because we have no sim to our north now. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Coolness. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you think it would be hard to script an object that sits in the NW corner and alerts us if someone is parked there? |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
With a barbed wire fence? And sharks? |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, or for the region if they've been away beyond some threshold time. |
15:24 |
Rip (euripidesupman) |
and rap music |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'd though about placing a few sharks up there. |
15:24 |
Glorf Bulmer |
sharks with lasers on their heads! |
15:24 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
Who would it alert and how would it alert them? |
15:24 |
Meora (menchor) |
set it to damage and get some krakken |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's a good question Jayle. I think staff is actually been pretty good at spotting those hanging up there. |
15:26 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
Right. I kind of think that our staff could just check the local map and monitor it - instead of adding another script to the region. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. That works too |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The HUD, btw, is called HereRemover because it removes "here" from the avatars (leaving them "there") so that nairy a one remains to trouble us. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay, let's take questions from everyone now. |
15:27 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
Does it give an explanation as to what is happening though? |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, it also IMs those removed. |
15:27 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
ok |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's a one-by-one removal and not easy to do by accident. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
three-step process. Select, confirm, remove. |
15:28 |
HereRemover HUD |
HereRemover Version 1.1 |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Does anyone have any questions that we can help with? |
15:29 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
nods. I just take concerns over the psychological impact we make on folks. |
15:29 |
|
Gronk Seriman raises a hand. |
15:30 |
Gronk Seriman |
Has anybody heard any new news about SL2? I cannot find anything lately. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ebbe Linden spoke a bit on it at his VWBPE 2015 speech |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me find a link to that for you. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://danielvoyager.wordpress.com/2015/03/18/ebbe-linden-talks-about-education-second-life-and-next-generation-platform-at-vwbpe-2015/ |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There you go. |
15:31 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you! |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Comment? |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any impressions you carried away from VWBPE and/or the HEQ forum? |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(or blogged about) |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. Not really. I was very busy in RL and only had time to attend a few sessions other than the HEQ. |
15:35 |
Josain Zsun |
I thought it was one of the best organized I've attended or been part of. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And the HEQ was interesting, but yielded nothing we don't know already. It was mostly aimed at people who don't know the ins and outs of SL based educational groups |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ah. kk |
15:36 |
Josain Zsun |
HEQ forum was interesting hearing different parts of SL with same goals. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Josain, do you want to speak about VWBPE? I think you saw a lot more of it than I did. |
15:37 |
Josain Zsun |
It was a great networking experience. A lot of the people still in SL that are doing good things (mainly in education) |
15:38 |
Josain Zsun |
Security was excellent and instantly responded to if there was a problem anywhere. |
15:39 |
Josain Zsun |
There was a lot of traffic and good sharing in presentations and workshops |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If anyone is interested a lot of the presentations are archived at the vwbpe.org webpage |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But sadly not the HEQ one |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any more questions? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Larky, did you still have a topic on non-staff helping? |
15:43 |
Josain Zsun |
I was distracting her in backchannel. |
15:44 |
|
Wordsmith Jarvinen Raises one eyebrow. |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
A topic? I remember our discussion last night. It was my impression that the Admin staff had decided not to hassle folks who want to help, but who aren't formal staff members. While there are certainly good reasons to become a formal Tutor, for various reasons, not everyone goes that direction. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was hoping to talk that over with Lindal. I think she agrees that it needs to be changed, but I guess we will have to get her via email. |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
We may need to revisit that in a staff meeting. Okay, Carl. That works. |
15:45 |
Glorf Bulmer |
Any number of helpful people have been totally unofficial... I was one such myself for a long time! |
15:45 |
Gronk Seriman |
Me too. |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I personally agree, subject to some qualifications which include being willing to take direction from staff, understanding that this is not an opportunity to recruit or solicit, and not hanging immediately at the entry point. |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Certainly, there are supervision and education needs when we have new faces around, but that is true of regular staff, too. And something I want to make a priority. |
15:46 |
Larkylouz |
And yes, people like Gronk, Josain, Glorf, Aylaria and many others that don't come immediately to mind are very valuable members of our community. Andrea emailed me just thismorning about a possible problem she saw, and she has done tthat several times in the past. |
15:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
That is why I think a Tutoring meeting would be helpful. |
15:47 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
You do havea lot of slack time here when there are no tutors around. Volunteers would seem to be needed. |
15:47 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
That ar enot staff |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. Working with and cooperating with our staff as well as moving off sim when it's full are necessary prerequisites. |
15:48 |
Larkylouz |
I do, too, Gronk. And I think that we might need to discuss making a kit of the public handouts available to some of the regular volunteers. I'll be approaching that with TPTB who are far enough downstage not to egg me right this moment. |
15:48 |
|
Larkylouz is just teasing. |
15:48 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
I am for allowing anyone to help in Oxbridge who are non-staff - provided the help they are giving is positive in nature. I don't think we should turn folks away because they aren't staff. I think we are moving in that direction and I think it is great. It will open channels to people possibly becoming more official, joining our community, and wanting to sponsor our place. |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Agreed. |
15:49 |
Larkylouz |
And the Tutor meeting has been on hold for RL reasons - we've had other commitments. It is definitely on the ASAP agenda. And I want it to be ongoing. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm taking notes here and will create a draft policy for this. |
15:49 |
Glorf Bulmer |
One of the great strengths of the place is that it provides a welcoming environment... "unofficial" help is an enormous asset to this. |
15:50 |
Glorf Bulmer |
(I agree that it has to be actual *help*, not recruiting for others or undermining the actual staff in any way.) |
15:50 |
EveNAnna |
I think this is very controversial. Lots of the wrong folks try to pick up newbies - helpful at first and messing them up or spamming them in the next step. I didn't know even how to keep them apart from real staff when I signed up here |
15:51 |
Larkylouz |
Absolutely. I am seeing a lot of positive things happening in Oxbridge, and I know more are to come. We're a little shorthanded with David's illness, my RL nonsense, and so forth. This is a great Admin staff - things will happen. |
15:51 |
Josain Zsun |
I have campaigned for off 24 hours coverage. Tasha is our "Euro-team", but not always available and will be gone through Easter holidays. |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Then those people can be invited to enjoy a ban from Oxbridge, EveNAnna :) |
15:51 |
Larkylouz |
I don't know how to, now, Ms. Anna, and that is one of my largest frustrations. Things can happen in IM that none of the rest of us can control unless someone steps up to complain. |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do need to set expectations and be clear about them. |
15:52 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
nods and I agree with that Gronk. One person who was attempting to help - was undermining Tasha to our visitors so he was removed from helping. It's just something we'll need to expect but take an understanding that it will happen, it's not too often and we will gain more great people out of this than negative ones. |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I agree with Jayleden there. |
15:52 |
Larkylouz |
Any scripters who want to create a mind-reading tool, I'm all for it. |
15:53 |
Josain Zsun |
Not since Johnny Carson retired |
15:53 |
Meora (menchor) |
Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:53 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:53 |
Glorf Bulmer |
"There's no art to read the mind's construction in the face...." |
15:53 |
Larkylouz |
LOL - or in boob physics, Gronk? |
15:53 |
Larkylouz |
Glorf! |
15:53 |
|
Glorf Bulmer has nothing to offer, but by gum she can do an apposite quotation. |
15:53 |
Larkylouz |
Geez, I"m making a habit of that! |
15:54 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
We can post a sign that says to the effect "If you are being asked to join non-Oxbridge groups in IM, asked to pay for services here, you are being scammed." |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any final questions? |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I like that wording. |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
Good suggestion, Jayle |
15:54 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Good idea |
15:55 |
EveNAnna |
The safety class was very good - should be mandatory for newbies in my opinion |
15:55 |
Josain Zsun |
I agree |
15:55 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Agreed |
15:55 |
Meora (menchor) |
when I took the safety class we got a couple of griefers |
15:55 |
Josain Zsun |
Lindal's is better than ones I have attended elsewhere. |
15:55 |
Larkylouz |
Geez, Meora, maybe we should tap last wee's talent? |
15:56 |
Larkylouz |
*week's |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
"Thanks to Mr. _____" for this opportunity to demonstrate how region ban works" |
15:56 |
Meora (menchor) |
Lindahl had to convince us it was not planned |
15:56 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
When I taught Safety the griefers were always helpful to demonstrate the goings on of griefings and how ejects with bannings work. |
15:56 |
Glorf Bulmer |
An object lesson is worth a thousand words. |
15:57 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
(Though during my first class I was griefed by Carl - grins) |
15:57 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
(I failed that demonstration) |
15:57 |
Larkylouz |
And it is good for folks to practice those anti-griefing measures under the stress of a real griefing. |
15:58 |
Larkylouz |
but with Lindal's support |
15:58 |
Josain Zsun |
They aren't too creative. There tends to be a correlation between advertised Events and attacks. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any last questions? |
15:58 |
|
Carl Metropolitan looks around for people typing. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks for coming everyone! See you all next week—and hopefully at trivia, too :) |
15:59 |
Patella Mandible (jayleden.miles) |
Thank you for coming - apologies for my lateness. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
15:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
15:59 |
EveNAnna |
Thank YOU. |
15:59 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me. |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Night Mr skysmith |
16:00 |
Glorf Bulmer |
Goodnight Elfbiter! |
16:00 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye everyone |
