Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2015-03-22

15:00 Carl Metropolitan Tali has (as previously announced) stepped down from her administrative role at Oxbridge.
15:00 Carl Metropolitan David is still out with medical issues.
15:01 Carl Metropolitan And so that just leaves Lindal who just logged on :)
15:01 Carl Metropolitan She should be here momentarily
15:01 Larkylouz I heard from David yesterday. He said to tell you all that while he can't be here today, his sight is much better and he expects to be back soon.
15:02 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Good
15:02 Carl Metropolitan That's great news
15:03 Gronk Seriman Oo! A graph!
15:03 Carl Metropolitan Hi again. Sorry phone there
15:04 Lindal Kidd huff huff huff
15:04 Larkylouz Yes. I plan to issue him a personal copy of a ban script so he'll log off when needed and take care of himself!
15:04 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Why is the phone sorry? :-)
15:04 Larkylouz Welcome Lindal!
15:04 Larkylouz He just means he has to answe3r the RL phone
15:04 Lindal Kidd I'd've got here faster if I wasn't carrying this chair!
15:04 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) :-)
15:04 Larkylouz Oh, got it Elfbiter! ;^p
15:04 Carl Metropolitan Thank you. That's a great way of breaking it down, Wordsmith
15:05 Carl Metropolitan Am I correct is seeing that the chart only deals with Avatars 8 days or younger?
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen That's the avatar age distribution we've had in classes since about the first of the year.
15:06 Wordsmith Jarvinen No. I just didn't get the script bar labels in.
15:06 Carl Metropolitan Ah. Okay.
15:06 Samm Florian OK, 'cause otherwise somethin' weird happens t'folks after th'first week.
15:06 Samm Florian grins.
15:07 Wordsmith Jarvinen From bottom to top: <10 days, <30, <90, <180, <360, <720, <1440, >= 1440.
15:08 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, Samm, there's no saying it doesn't .... but that's not on the graph.
15:08 Carl Metropolitan So what this shows, is even with trivia and Q&A taken out, older avatars still account for about 1/4 of our class attendees.
15:09 Tali Rosca Or more, depending on your definition of "older":
15:09 Samm Florian We need some control data though: what would this graph look like fer folks passin' through other regions?
15:09 Wordsmith Jarvinen Yes. We're weakest in the 90-360 day range.
15:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, this is class data, so taking classes in other regions.
15:10 Tali Rosca That makes sense, though. I'd imagine that's when people have gotten a sense of what SL is about, and are out exploring.
15:10 Lindal Kidd <---agrees with Tali
15:11 Carl Metropolitan I think that this supports the idea that we may need a wider variety of classes, including some very newbie once (avatar appearance, profiles, search, inventory) as well as some more advanced ones
15:13 Samm Florian Wouldn't that kinda overlap with th'tutorial, though?
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen I've also gone through my notecards since early December and collected recommendations received for classes and teachers.. I've a few more places to glean, but putting that altogether now into a "we need" letter.
15:13 Wordsmith Jarvinen (and yes, I do have a meeting/class for tutors in there)
15:14 Lindal Kidd I don't think so Samm...the classes should reinforce and build on the tutorial.
15:14 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Once we have that, what do YOU need from Oxbridge and the rest of us to make more classes a reality? More help? More money?
15:14 Samm Florian Teachers, I reckon.
15:14 Meora (menchor) the trouble is newbies have different things they want to learn and some want more detail than the tutorial
15:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen More bodies that can organize material and teach it so that others gain workable understanding.
15:15 Larkylouz Yes, I agree with Lindal. Some folks need more practice/instruction than the tutorial. And some folks are more able/willing to learn on their own than others.
15:15 Daisy (thegator) I reckon it's a lot of work, teaching.
15:15 Carl Metropolitan It is.
15:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen Meora, if you glean specifics on that, let me know ... if their are patterns.
15:16 Larkylouz The class development takes me hours, Ms. Daisy
15:16 Meora (menchor) not that I have noticed I was drawing on my own time as a newbie
15:16 Dingo Qin Mr.Jarvinen, will you be pulling the bodies from the tutor pool, or from outside resources?
15:16 Daisy (thegator) I've thought about teaching but have never tried, it seems like a lot of work... and I might be terrible at it!
15:16 Wordsmith Jarvinen The likely answer is ... yes.
15:17 Wordsmith Jarvinen I'm going to post to both the current faculty group (COU) and to ISC.
15:17 Wordsmith Jarvinen But some of the teacher suggestions are to those not currently on faculty who have been teaching.
15:17 Carl Metropolitan I also know people who teach who are not associated with the steamlands, if you want to go there.
15:18 Phrynne I don't see any reason *not* to look there, if they know something they can teach here.
15:18 Phrynne especially if it's something we need.
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen We want teachers to gains some familiarity with Caledon and its culture --- to behave accordingly, but how that happens can be flexible.
15:19 Samm Florian Ya know, it might be good t'develop a pool of substitute teachers too, and that might be a good way fer folks t'get their feet wet.
15:19 Carl Metropolitan Okay. That's a good idea, too Samm
15:19 Carl Metropolitan Maybe along with a set of class outlines.
15:20 Wordsmith Jarvinen That's happened in some cases.
15:20 Larkylouz That would make the classes more consistent, too.
15:21 Dingo Qin It would be nice to have substitutes for canceled classes
15:21 Samm Florian Outline? That sounds like work! :(
15:21 Wordsmith Jarvinen We've had Jayle step in for Lucien several times. And Wendyslippers has lined up a substitute.
15:22 Larkylouz I'd think that just editing a transcript of your class might give one a good start, Samm.
15:24 Wordsmith Jarvinen Welcome, Vicerine.
15:24 Kamilah Hauptmann Don't mine me, I'm just here to randomly grief the place. :)
15:24 Carl Metropolitan VWBPE was this week. Oxbridge had a booth there and as part of the Help Education Quorum we conducted a round table event hosted by Brace Coral (of NCI) and myself.
15:24 Wordsmith Jarvinen Was that videoed, Carl?
15:24 Carl Metropolitan My finger is on the eject button
15:24 Carl Metropolitan Apparently not.
15:25 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) VWBPE was MOST interesting !!
15:25 Lindal Kidd did some of the attendees try the Quest?
15:25 Gronk Seriman Were there any known Lindens there?
15:25 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) Only one
15:25 Lindal Kidd Ebbe gave the keynote
15:25 Josain Zsun About 6 went
15:25 Carl Metropolitan Xiola Linden was at the HEQ event
15:25 Dingo Qin I tried the quest...and am currently stuck on the airship
15:26 Carl Metropolitan The Oxbridge display is still up, but it is pretty much the same as last years.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan I just updated some of the posters.
15:28 Carl Metropolitan That was my focus this week.
15:28 Carl Metropolitan Well, RL work was mostly my focus this week :)
15:28 Carl Metropolitan Lindal, do you have anything you want to report?
15:28 Lindal Kidd yes sir
15:29 Lindal Kidd My assistant Phrynne has made wonderful progress on updating the language landmarks
15:29 Lindal Kidd also
15:29 Lindal Kidd we had some discussion this week on scholar home positions
15:29 Lindal Kidd I updated the notecard on that
15:29 Lindal Kidd to (hopefully) clarify that either the rose garden or the village chat circle are acceptable home positions
15:30 Carl Metropolitan Great.
15:30 Carl Metropolitan Okay... Let's move on to questions from the audience.
15:30 Lindal Kidd the new Faculty Kits should be ready soon, also
15:30 Carl Metropolitan Ask us anything.
15:31 Larkylouz That's wonderful, Lindal! Thank you to both of you for all your hard work!
15:32 Wordsmith Jarvinen Other questions?
15:33 Daisy (thegator) Well, I have a question about sounds and scripts....
15:33 Wordsmith Jarvinen nods
15:34 Carl Metropolitan Please ask us
15:34 Daisy (thegator) I'm having problems with lag in my song script, I was wondering if there was a way to fix that. Someone said there was but I didn't understand their answer entirely, not really being a scripter.
15:34 Daisy (thegator) She said something about Preloading sounds I think and setting them to zero volume
15:35 Carl Metropolitan Hmm... Any scripters have time to look at Daisy's script after the Q&A?
15:35 Wordsmith Jarvinen There is a function to preload sounds before they are actually played. wiki.secondlife.com
15:36 Daisy (thegator) yesh, I think that's the one she was referring to, but I wasn't sure how it related to volume.
15:36 Kamilah Hauptmann Or play it once beforehand at zero volume if you know there's going to b some delay.
15:37 Daisy (thegator) Yes, I've tried playing it beforehand at zero volume but I can't see it makes any difference.
15:37 Wordsmith Jarvinen It doesn't directly relate to volume. It relates to having the sound clips ready to play with minimal lag.
15:38 Carl Metropolitan Does anyone who knows scripting (i.e., not me) have time to look at her script?
15:38 Daisy (thegator) I think I know someone at Raglan U who knows this sort of thing so not to worry, I can ask her.
15:38 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) If not too radical an idea would any thought be given to a general Chat Group for Caledon ? Not so much for questions but a group with fewer protocols for exchanging ideas and general chit chat Carl?
15:38 Kamilah Hauptmann Pass the script here I'll have a quick boo.
15:38 Wordsmith Jarvinen For Caledon, there is one.
15:38 Wordsmith Jarvinen ISC
15:39 Daisy (thegator) hang on
15:39 Daisy (thegator) I think the latest script is in an object, if i can rez it here.
15:39 Carl Metropolitan Most people use the ISC group for that.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan Independent State of Caledon
15:40 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) Do you have that group URI for that please?
15:40 Samm Florian Unlike COUG, ISC is by invitation.
15:40 Wordsmith Jarvinen I can give you an invite to it kit
15:40 Carl Metropolitan ISC is a chat group.
15:40 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) Ahh thank you Wordsmith
15:40 Carl Metropolitan People are always talking in it.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan We try to keep COUG clear for "live help" and announcements.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan It is a place for people to be able to ask questions at any time.
15:41 Lindal Kidd gasps at the Chancellor's skill at understatement
15:42 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) :-)
15:42 Gronk Seriman oh, no!
15:43 Carl Metropolitan Okay... Moving on, next question?
15:43 Gronk Seriman is anybody else suffering graphics porblems at the moment?
15:44 Dingo Qin yes
15:44 Lindal Kidd I seem to be OK
15:44 Carl Metropolitan Not here
15:45 Carl Metropolitan A lot of that will have to do with individual computer and connection issues.
15:45 Larkylouz Aside from the delusion that I see a big green alligator with a tiara sitting in front of me, I'm fine.
15:45 Carl Metropolitan Though SL is traditionally a bit slower than normal Sunday afternoons, because of higher use.
15:45 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) No problems reported on SL Grid http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ so probably indvidual settings Gronk
15:46 Gronk Seriman I'm better now, but still not right. I thought somebody set off a graphics bomb for a moment.
15:46 Lindal Kidd The alligator is a mass hallucination, if it IS a hallucination...I see her too.
15:47 Larkylouz LOL
15:47 Daisy (thegator) Yesh, no alligators here, no no. All is safe. No need to be afraid... muaha.
15:47 Carl Metropolitan Now let me address the elephant in the room.
15:47 KIT (rectorarrowsmith.wasp) A jolly useful page for live online avatar numbers here http://etitsup.com/slstatistics/online-now-last-24hrs :-))
15:48 Samm Florian There's an elephant too?
15:48 Larkylouz giggles
15:49 Wordsmith Jarvinen Elephant?
15:49 Phrynne notices the ghost of an elephant sleeping by the far wall
15:49 Larkylouz Pachyderm?
15:49 Carl Metropolitan Any other questions?
15:50 Dex Euromat I really like Caledon tutorial, which contains the Mac keys translation. I included the landmark into my new usres tips notecards (from time to time I'm helping newcomers).
15:51 Carl Metropolitan Thank you.
15:52 Dex Euromat Do you experienced someone from Polish communities at Caledon?
15:52 Lindal Kidd Polish people do come through once in a while
15:53 Wordsmith Jarvinen Miss Larky has pointed out the usefulness of having some bilingual staff.
15:53 Carl Metropolitan I don't believe we have anyone with polish language skills available, though.
15:53 Dingo Qin Translators work well though?
15:54 Phrynne Reasonably well for short sentences.
15:54 Lindal Kidd The White Tiger Mentors maintain a list of helpers who can speak various languages. Perhaps we should try to do the same?
15:54 Larkylouz Seems like we had something at one point. I'd have to look. Do you remember, Phrynne? Either a person, or perhaps a sim?
15:54 Wordsmith Jarvinen They help, but at this point lack support.
15:55 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Some of the machine translations are.... amusing at best...
15:55 Larkylouz I have be3en trying to find folks who are willing to volunteer, Lindal. I have a short list, but they are primarily spanish and Portuguese speakers, many of whom we already know.
15:55 Phrynne There was a help sim that was going to open. I have not gotten to it yet to check.
15:55 Dex Euromat The best machine translator so far is microsoft one. I am Polish language native speaker and have learned English for whole education period.
15:55 Larkylouz I think the translators work better with romance languages than they do others. That's just my impression.
15:56 Larkylouz Really? I shall have to look into that one, Mr. Euromat.
15:56 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Finnish results are certainly..... lacking
15:56 Carl Metropolitan Dex if you are interested in volunteering to help Polish speakers, please let Larky know.
15:57 Kamilah Hauptmann hopefully set Daisy up with something workable, but must toodle off. :)
15:57 Larkylouz Yes, I would be delighted! I don't have anything organized yet, but it is a pet project of mine. Someday, I'd like to have notecard givers in the tutorial, in different languages, so the entire tutorial could be translated. That's a ways off, though.
15:57 Daisy (thegator) Yup, thanks Kamilah :)
15:58 Carl Metropolitan Any final questions?
15:58 Dex Euromat I'm participating in one of language learning communities in SL. Also part of First Polish e-university project.
15:58 Dingo Qin Thank you for the lively discussion this evening.
15:58 Samm Florian That card we give out to differnt language speakers, tellin' 'em where they can go fer help: is that card available from a vendor?
15:58 Larkylouz And everyone should wear a translator. It is a source of constant amusement to watch the strange translations of common words.
15:59 Larkylouz Not that I'm aware of, Samm. That's a good idea.
15:59 Samm Florian LSL can theoretically detect th'language that a person's viewer is set to.
15:59 Phrynne Samm, it's not one card, it's about 15.
15:59 Dex Euromat I'm not a teacher RL, but I like to share my knowledge
15:59 Samm Florian Cards then. :)
15:59 Carl Metropolitan We need a vendor for our notecards once we get a meaningful sized set of them.
15:59 Wordsmith Jarvinen I've put together a HUD that displays language setting, Samm.
16:00 Lindal Kidd that's a cool gadget, Dean Jarvinen
16:00 Samm Florian Ya could have a vendor watchin' fer newbies who speak somethin' other'n English, and give 'em a card right away. (Only once, preferably.)
16:00 Wordsmith Jarvinen Did you get one, Miss Kidd? (V 1.1)
16:01 Carl Metropolitan Well, I need to run. Thanks to everyone for coming this afternoon.
16:01 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thanks you all.
16:01 Dingo Qin claps
16:01 Samm Florian Bye evrybuddy!
16:01 Carl Metropolitan Bye
16:01 Tali Rosca Just as a side note, we do have the "detect newcomers in the sim" script running, as well as a language detection for greetings.
