15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This is your chance to ask us anything. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
We may not answer *anything*, though. |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'd like to start by checking in with each of the deans to see if there is any news from their areas |
15:01 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Tali, how about yours? |
15:01 |
Larkylouz |
David was just on, and can't see well enough to come. |
15:01 |
Larkylouz |
I'll send him a transcripte right after the meeting |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. |
15:02 |
Phrynne |
Lindal and I are working on updating the faculty information packet. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Not a whole lot of news. I've been doing some programming on the engines UI. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
But nothing outward visible. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or the transcript can be up on the web tonight. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The only thing I have to mention is that next week, Oxbridge will be at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education virtual convention. We have a display (nearly identical to last years) and I will be hosting (along with Brace Coral) a round table with members of the Help Education Quorum. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wordsmith, what about your area? |
15:05 |
|
Lindal Kidd waves to everyone in apology for arriving late! |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've mostly been playing catchup, but now working on a more general class letter. I do have a quick plot of avatar age distribution over the last weeks that I'll upload and put up as we discuss. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thank you. Jayleden? Anything to report? |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's interesting that it's heaviest on the old end, btw. |
15:06 |
Jayleden Miles |
I'm a bit behind on things in SL, but ahead in RL studies so there it is. Nothing else to report. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal, anything to announce from your area? |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
I met with Dean Emeritus Discovolante this week |
15:07 |
Lindal Kidd |
we identified her campus objects |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
and she gave me spare copies of them |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
so we have a fallback if we need them, or something is accidentally deleted |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh good. Are they full perm, so you can pass them on to a successor if it ever becomes necessary? |
15:09 |
Lindal Kidd |
some are full perm, but several are No Copy :( |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No copy is fine as long as we only need one of them. |
15:09 |
Lindal Kidd |
I have two copies of everything! |
15:10 |
Lindal Kidd |
and I'll work with Martini as our schedules permit to clear up any permissions issues |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. That's it for the deans. How about questions from the audience. Remember, we can answer questions about other things than just Oxbridge! |
15:12 |
Josain Zsun |
Can the odd parcels around the sim be Joined to reduce places baned AV can return to. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
As the resident radical hippie freak for peace and love, may I request the addtion of some large sharks or krakken to the local waters. Ejecting griefers just doesn't provide the joy it used to! |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We already did that on the one next to the home point that was set to Desmond. |
15:13 |
Josain Zsun |
There is one around a fireplace in one of the buildings that says it belongs to the Group. |
15:13 |
Lindal Kidd |
ooh, kraken infested waters! I like this plan. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That is so people can rez there for the excercise |
15:14 |
Jayleden Miles |
Is for the joining of parcels - would make it much easier on volunteers. |
15:14 |
Jayleden Miles |
But they can rez on the regular parcel as well. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Good point. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will fix that. |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any others that are problem areas, Josain? |
15:15 |
Josain Zsun |
I can't find my notes on the survey I did. |
15:15 |
Phrynne |
awwww, cute! |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hmm... Bigger than I remembered |
15:15 |
|
Phrynne appreciates the shark and wonders if it gives rides |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The one near the fireplace is for rezzing and lighting a torch |
15:15 |
Josain Zsun |
Seemed to have been a couple others I found. Although I know the Library has been discussed many times. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This is a parody of an infamous work of modern art :) |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's part of the newbie activites. |
15:15 |
|
Lindal Kidd claps her hands with delight. "Lasershark!" |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will fix the fireplace one |
15:16 |
Larkylouz |
I don't see it! |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The Library is out of my hands. |
15:16 |
Jayleden Miles |
The train depot, the shop - the Hall of Caledon - are all their own parcels. Is there a reason for that? |
15:16 |
Larkylouz |
oh, yes I do. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Not that I know of. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, voice is enabled near the cafe. |
15:16 |
Josain Zsun |
Oh, yes and the Lecture Hall |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So that's a chat spot. |
15:16 |
Jayleden Miles |
Cause as of now - banning someone takes going to each of these parcels. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Both of those are for voice I think. |
15:16 |
|
Agatha Macbeth notices a smell of fish |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the lecture hall has a 3 hour return time for good reason. |
15:16 |
Phrynne |
Also the gazebo behind the train station is separate |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And the gazebo contains out of group materials that we can't replace. |
15:17 |
Lindal Kidd |
I believe that at some point, we wanted rezzing and/or voice settings to be different, in different locations. That's probably why things are so fragmented. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And again, one has to evaluate the fireplace parcel in terms of the torch exercise. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Tali--do you know if there is a simple ban script that will ban someone in all connected parcels? |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
There probably is. I don't have any right off the bat. |
15:18 |
Jayleden Miles |
I'm more apt to the Hall of Caledon, Train depot and the Store being joined or made into a large parcel of themselves so there is less having to ban on. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you have time to look on marketplace and find us one? |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge Mint will pay, of course. |
15:18 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Store is the voice-enabled area. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The parcel in the NE corner was set up for Aevalle's activities by Des. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We need to do some joining and use a ban one place ban all places script. |
15:19 |
Larkylouz |
I was unaware she did that until last week. Does she still need it? |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She is no longer needing that I believe. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We would need to check. |
15:19 |
Jayleden Miles |
The parcel for the fireplace land is set to no different terms then the regular parcel. I checked. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
I can see if there is something which would fit. As per a fairly long mail thread, I am not *overly* fond of inventing and maintaining an extra layer of access control to admin tools. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It may be COUG group however. |
15:20 |
Jayleden Miles |
As is the regular parcel. |
15:20 |
Jayleden Miles |
They are set to the same group. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can someone volunteer to put together a list of the parcels? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No. The regular parcel is COU |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
To my knowledge, there is no way to read from an existing ban list (which could be used to synchronize them between different parcels). |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And the groups they are set to? |
15:20 |
Larkylouz |
I already have one half done. I'll do it. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I can, since I'm reasonably familiar with them. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It sounds like Larky is nearly there. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk She can collect them and I can comment on them. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know there is; we used to use one like that at NCI. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But it may be too much trouble. |
15:21 |
Larkylouz |
yes, I'll pass it to Word when I'm done |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
So having a script which can synchronize parcels would require the *script* to maintain the master list, which in turn means that we would have to invent/use a new ban input system, and maintain the access rights to that. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As I said. It may be too much trouble |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
How often do we get griefers hiding out in those spaces? |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
BTW, the age stats I have to day are up behind me. |
15:22 |
Phrynne |
We actually have people coming back into Oxbridge anywhere along that edge, after being ejected |
15:22 |
Josain Zsun |
I can understand the different settings requiring "parcelization". I didn't realize this until ejecting a disrupter from a class only to have him walk back onto the sim. Phrynne has done a great job of going to the others to up their ban lists when needed. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
I am more worried about it simply becoming obscure; rather than using the well-known standard tools, we'll have to learn and remember all entry points created by the new system. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Then we will try to fix it the simple way first. |
15:23 |
Larkylouz |
One thing I do before ejecting someone is set my Cam on them. Then I can easily re-eject everytime they land. The waters here are cold enough that I feel they need to be dunked to understand the concept of clothing. |
15:23 |
Jayleden Miles |
Both the FIreplace parcel and the Regular Parcel are set to COU group. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Does the Avatar Age groups graph count volunteers and teachers in the age brackets? |
15:23 |
Jayleden Miles |
(Just sent an alt to check) |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
But it's not like there is a dearth of security, ban, eject and whatever systems on the marketplace. |
15:24 |
Josain Zsun |
I've locked on to a couple recently and noticed that. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's for classes. It doesn't count instructors. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Wow. I had nor realized that our classes serve such a different audience from Oxbridge in general. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The top line is likely influenced by what we are doing now, but not counting those on stage. |
15:25 |
Lindal Kidd |
they do seem to be an older crowd! |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And trivia too |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I want to do another with Q&A filtered out, but it's not just Q&A. |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you think you could filter out those two events? |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. |
15:27 |
Jayleden Miles |
This is why it's important for our volunteers to not just ask the older avatars to leave the sim to make way for younger avatars - we serve more older avatars then younger ones. We can't really expect that just because an avatar is six or seven they know everything. Some leave after creating an account and come back years later - needing to relearn skills. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That was with 581 student-hours total, btw. |
15:27 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I have met lots of returning ones lately. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It does say we need to strengthen the middle ground. |
15:28 |
Meora (menchor) |
its strange to see a 7 year old who looks like a 2007 newbie |
15:28 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I as well have seen a lot of older avatars returning and relearning things. I agree that it's important o understand that regardless of age, anyone might need help understanding or relearning the basics, or might have even entirely not known a feature or ability existed until they had the chance to question it with us! |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've actually taken a few of our classes here because I wanted to learn the stuff. And I'm nearly ten years old! |
15:29 |
Josain Zsun |
I've recently met several "oldies" that have come through to get relearned or come up to speed with the new clients. |
15:29 |
Jayleden Miles |
Indeed. Last week or the week before I was asked to leave the sim because I was too old to be there, So I slapped on the dean tag, and mentioned age was not really a restriction on our sim to being helped. (the person was a non-tutor volunteer) |
15:30 |
Phrynne |
We also get a lot of older avatars who are bringing in newbies to show around. |
15:30 |
Larkylouz |
Jayle, and everyonhe, it would be helpufl to me to know when you see such things happen (and know the name) so I can reinforce your teaching. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Please note that the poster Wordsmith has put up is for the Classes alone. |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But that data is basically since the start of the year and we are far from just hitting a single age area. |
15:31 |
Larkylouz |
We didn't used to allow that, Phrynne, but Carl requested that we not discourage that. Makes the place feel friendlier |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can you send a copy of that chart, and the raw data, and the caveats (Q&A, Trivia), to Aevelle? |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sure |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Help with her dissertation? |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She's asked in a recent email for any metrics we have for her research. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It might. |
15:32 |
Jayleden Miles |
Actually, Larky, the deans were always split on that, Carl always allowed it. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Be happy too. How about the ad board touch metrics? |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think that was an area that Martini and I disagreed on. But since Martini was in charge and doing the hard work, I never made an issue of it. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It might help her. It could not hurt. |
15:33 |
Lindal Kidd |
shoo, kitty |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think that's the same cat that went to sleep on my desk during trivia one night. |
15:34 |
Lindal Kidd |
I just don't want her getting her tail in the fans! |
15:34 |
|
Calico Jones (brendastarr72) thinks those fans look like a bad place to sleep! |
15:34 |
Jayleden Miles |
Aevalle recently said she hopes her dissertation will help with showing those who run SL Education sites (such as Oxbridge) where improvements can be made. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I hope it can |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nods.... which is why we started those ... new capabilities that we didn't have before. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm really looking forward to reading it. |
15:36 |
Jayleden Miles |
She said she's nearly to 200 pages! |
15:36 |
Jayleden Miles |
grins |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:36 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
I am astonished to discover just now that non-newbies have been categorically regarded unwelcome, and could list many reasons for why that seems very counterproductive, as would include particulars already enumerated here by persons present. |
15:36 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
Might you comment on that further please? |
15:36 |
Lindal Kidd |
May I, Carl? |
15:36 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
^as* |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sure |
15:37 |
Lindal Kidd |
Mr Dubrovna, Oxbridge's official policy is that we welcome ALL ages. |
15:37 |
Lindal Kidd |
our tutorial is designed for the newcomer, but all are welcome |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The words I use are "free and open to all" |
15:37 |
Lindal Kidd |
when a class is in session and the sim becomes full, we occasionally ask those who are not actively in a learning situation to step next door |
15:38 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
ok |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In that Oxbridge is a homestead sim and limited to 20 avatars at a time. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. Which sucks sometimes |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
I am a little unsure where the "non-newcomers have categorically been unwelcome" came from. It was specifically mentioned that one non-tutor said so, and was corrected. |
15:38 |
Larkylouz |
I do sometimes ask older avatars not to lurk in that intial landing circle in the cathedral, but they are always given a choice to explain. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
For example, it is why we have classes like this and the weekly trivia game in this alternate location. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which also precludes anyone who is 16-17 in RL from being 'physically' present. |
15:41 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
It was in the context of this forum here that I heard mention of asking "oldies" to leave, and took it to mean that is not an uncommon practice, irrespective of your having added commentary to say it is not necessarily policy to do to. |
15:41 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Older avatars come in constantly. Most understand when the sim filling arning kicks in. |
15:41 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
*warning |
15:41 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
Thus, I would feel uncomfortable to be argumentative on that point if approached by a "volunter" as such. |
15:41 |
Larkylouz |
There are many long-term SL residents who are not on staff, who spend much time in Oxbridge, helping and/or hanging out. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Let's move on to the next question. I think we've covered that one as best we can. |
15:42 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
ok |
15:42 |
Chekov Dubrovna |
Thank you for responding. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Next question? |
15:45 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
Is there still active Caledon militia of any kind? |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, there are active pirate groups ...... helps the trade balance you know. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think the Royal Caledonian Air Corps still exists. |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But mostly we are protected my pirates and Mad Science! |
15:46 |
Carl Metropolitan |
by pirates |
15:46 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
One returning guy has the mlitia uniform... |
15:46 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
OR in some cases, by mad scientist-pirates. |
15:47 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
I am asking because we meet old veteran in Oxbridge plaza |
15:47 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
YEs |
15:47 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
he have nice old red uniform and all |
15:47 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
he seems to be sad and nostalgic |
15:47 |
Jayleden Miles |
I have heard the Caledon Military groups (like the Air Corps) have get togethers to do things - I believe their groups are free to join and open. |
15:47 |
Meora (menchor) |
I thought Neualtenburg was Red |
15:47 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
that is why I am asking, he asked us |
15:48 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
so I have no clue where to direct that good man |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I haven't heard much from them for a good while. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can you ask in ISC chat? |
15:49 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
/m enods |
15:49 |
Larkylouz |
I use the Search tool often for things like that. You might also ask on the COUG help chat |
15:50 |
Jayleden Miles |
Use the SL Search to search for Caledon - filter for Groups. All the groups will come up and they can see which are a fit. |
15:50 |
Lindal Kidd |
Oh, I have a request! |
15:50 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
I believe mr. Skysmith did ask right away, but I can't recall if there was any success |
15:51 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
Well, thank you, not much more to ask about that |
15:51 |
Lindal Kidd |
My indefatigable assistant, Miss Phrynne, is updating the Language notecards and landmarks. If anyone knows of help or beginner areas designed for non english speakers, please send her the info. |
15:52 |
Phrynne |
Or even of places where other languages are spoken that have any information in general. |
15:52 |
|
Lindal Kidd nods |
15:52 |
Larkylouz |
Or friendly folks willing to help |
15:52 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
I'll do some research of my own, and see if I can't find anything. I'm not certain that I will, but I'll send anything I discover your way, PHrynne! |
15:53 |
Phrynne |
Thank you! |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any last questions? |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
My survey of staff was very unsuccessful. One thing I want strongly to do is dig up folks fluent in languages other than English and Spanish. If you discover someone with those skills, please encourage them to talk to me. |
15:54 |
|
Tali Rosca mews. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Send me a notecard Miss Larky and I'll include a mention in a general letter. I'll be going back through a number of notecards in putting it together. |
15:55 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Finns are still rare. |
15:55 |
Josain Zsun |
Not on that Lazershark! |
15:56 |
Meora (menchor) |
Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:56 |
|
Lindal Kidd laughs |
15:56 |
Jayleden Miles |
I still need to work on the new Development notecard. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Well, I think that's it for today. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Thanks to everyone for coming and for your questions. |
15:56 |
Larkylouz |
thank you Word |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks you all. |
15:57 |
Phrynne |
thank you Deans |
15:57 |
Aylaria (emberell) |
Thanks for listening and answering our questions, too! |
15:57 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
15:57 |
Jayleden Miles |
Thank you everyone for coming |
15:57 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me again... |
15:57 |
|
Lindal Kidd whisks efficiently out |
15:57 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
didn't you sleep last night, mr Elf? |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I love that chair |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I need one. |
