15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
Should we officially start? |
15:03 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) digs in his inventory for a huge mallet |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Tis time. |
15:04 |
Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) |
Lynette Zisara (zisara) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway. |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This is the weekly Q&A meeting of the Deans of Oxbridge. Your chance to ask question about Oxbridge, SL, and maybe more. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome everyone |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sorry. I was afk for a moment. |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or alternatively, when questions are scarce we try to think of bad puns. |
15:06 |
Beth Ghostraven |
I have a question |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or like last week go home early! |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Go, Beth! |
15:06 |
Beth Ghostraven |
The Social Committee for the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference, coming up later this month, would like to publicize the Caledon Quest as an entertainment choice for attendees. |
15:06 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Would it be all right if I duplicate the poster in the Hall of Caledon and post it at the conference? I would include a notecard and a LM. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sounds great. |
15:06 |
Beth Ghostraven |
I can send you a copy of the notecard if you'd like |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
I wasn't aware that deep thought was involved in the punning! |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you want a duplicate of the Caledon Quest poster, you may need to talk to Martini or Marion |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Only if you want an answer in a billion years, Miss Larky. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If you want to put up a VWBPE poster go ahead. |
15:07 |
Beth Ghostraven |
I plan to just copy the texture, using a photo |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge will have a booth at VWBPE as usual. |
15:07 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) bites his tongue 42 42 42 ...... |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I likely could just give you one. |
15:08 |
Beth Ghostraven |
it won't have the same content, Mr Jarvinen; would I be able to modify it? |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
Should that now be SCVWBPEC? |
15:08 |
|
Tali Rosca was impressed by the name. |
15:08 |
|
Beth Ghostraven tries to figure out that acronym |
15:09 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Hello Ms Gronk |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
"Social Committee for the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference" |
15:09 |
Beth Ghostraven |
oh yes, thank you |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Actually, you could get it off of the webpages. The quest images there change about every 30 seconds. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I had forgotten that. |
15:09 |
Beth Ghostraven |
I didn't realize there was a webpage for the Quest; I'll take a look |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/quest.php |
15:10 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) tries not to stomp any toes as she moves to another spot. |
15:11 |
Larkylouz |
Why did the chicken cross the road??? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh, on a related point, when we are talking to non-Caledon people or new residents, I would like for people to call us "Caledon Oxbridge" or "Caledon Oxbridge Gateway" rather than "Caledon Oxbridge University". The reason being that too many people end up thinking we are a real life university with a place in SL. This is due to the fact that Oxbridge is better than what 90% of RL universities put together. |
15:11 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Oh! Hello, Miss Jones! |
15:11 |
|
Phrynne takes notes. |
15:11 |
|
Beth Ghostraven pets the kitty |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We can be COU among ourselves and Caledonians |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
We should probably not call it "Gateway", for historical reasons. |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Awwww. But I like COG. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
LL canceled the Gateway program. We did not. We are still here. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And COG is very steampunk :) |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Exactly. |
15:12 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
^5, Carl. |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes, but it makes it sound like it's an old reference from when that program was still around. |
15:12 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) +1's C.O.G. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's not clear that LL even remembers that they had a gateway program. |
15:13 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) adjusts his neck cogs |
15:13 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Caledon Oxbridge Geniuses? |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
If I, as an SL resident, saw something for new residents called a "Gateway", I'd assume it was a dead link from way back. |
15:13 |
Meora (menchor) |
Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:13 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) hands Elf a can of wd40 |
15:13 |
Lynette Zisara (zisara) |
Caledon Oxbridge Greeting? |
15:14 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Part of the problem is that our layout *looks* like an university |
15:14 |
Koko Carlucci |
why is that a problem? |
15:14 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Rockcliffe is not an actual RL university either, is it? |
15:14 |
|
Meora (menchor) notices the irony of this discussion being held in a lecture hall |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm not sure actually. |
15:14 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
How#s the Group called? |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
About Rockcliffe |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
COU |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
"The world is changed, I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air (Elvish translation). Much that once was is lost; for none now live who remember it." |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't wnat to change any existing names in the groups |
15:15 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) thinks "Gateway" would be fine though, as a nod to the campus's history. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
COUG actually. COU being the faculty group. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hello Jayleden! |
15:15 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Hi Jayle |
15:15 |
Jayleden Miles |
HI |
15:15 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Hi Jayle! |
15:16 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
So if the group has the "IUniversity" in, why not the palce? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The reason being that too many people end up thinking we are a real life university with a place in SL. This is due to the fact that Oxbridge is better than what 90% of RL universities put together. |
15:17 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
I don't get the second sentance you are asaying, Carl .. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
Most RL universities likely do not focus on teaching general topics in SL. If they are here, it is with some very specific purpose. |
15:17 |
Larkylouz |
Oxbridge has a beautiful campus, with some awesome materials available. |
15:18 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Many of the RL uni sims are special purpose not build to replicate SL needs or their own campus. |
15:19 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
and how many are "too many people", if I may ask? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We are constrained to 20 or less. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
If it is a problem, it is when people assume we are teaching some specific "RL courses": |
15:19 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
No - lol - the "too many people" who think it's a real university ... |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
I've never personally experienced it as an *problem*, I must say. Sometimes as an opening to explain what we're teaching. |
15:20 |
Phrynne |
I have a handful of inquiries about that in a week, generally |
15:20 |
Jayleden Miles |
For myself, I probably get 1 in 3 who ask about applying for a degree. |
15:20 |
Larkylouz |
really? I've not experienced that often. Hmmm |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Batista, this is a suggestion from me; not a rule. If you want to call us "University" no one is going to ding you. I just hear it enough from the people on the front lines to think it is an issue. |
15:20 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
I have had requests from others to use the facility on the basis that we are indeed a RL uni. |
15:20 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
What I'm after : It's just totally inconsistent to re-name the place, and NOT re-name the group ... |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
Do they expect a RL degree, or some "degree in SL"? |
15:21 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I have met one of two people a year, maybe. Thought I have not kept any kind of notes. |
15:21 |
Larkylouz |
Tagging on Tali, are they attempting to RP or seriously after some RL recognition? |
15:21 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Consistency is a mark of a small and rigid mind, Mr Coirleone |
15:22 |
Larkylouz |
not that it is an issue for me what you choose to do. I can go either way |
15:22 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
That's a rare thing and IMO not particularly a problem. |
15:22 |
Jayleden Miles |
You cannot change group names. You are stuck with what you name the group - or you have start a new group. That is pointless for us - we'd have to ask 3000 people to join a new group after paying for the new group. Easier and simpler to keep the group. |
15:22 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Consistency is what makeds the world go round - it's probably, besides symmetry - the principle that holds the world together |
15:22 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
And I believe that the Chancellor was addressing that to most of the faculty and tutors here. No one will require that of visitors |
15:22 |
|
Phrynne welcomes people to Caledon Oxbridge because that's all that can be typed as they walk past. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me repeat myself: Batista, this is a suggestion from me; not a rule. If you want to call us "University" no one is going to ding you. |
15:23 |
|
SnoBound imagines a graduation ceremony with everyone in gowns and sheepskins being passed out and the golden coin spinning out of control |
15:23 |
Larkylouz |
Oh, I think graduates must run around on a large, brightly colored chicken. Enough of this traditional stuff! |
15:24 |
Meora (menchor) |
have the dodo hand out degrees |
15:24 |
Larkylouz |
LOL Meora |
15:24 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
On Bunny skin parchment? |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
Dodogrees. |
15:24 |
Phrynne |
or temperatures |
15:24 |
Mr.Fox da'Alenfey (spooked.dreamscape) |
Good evening. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi Mr. Fox |
15:24 |
Beth Ghostraven |
I would think a simple explanation to inquirers, like "We are a non-accredited, non-degree-granting virtual institution" might be sufficient |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do any of the Deans have anything to report from their areas? |
15:25 |
Beth Ghostraven |
as one of the FAQs, perhaps |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, actually, that's a synonym for a diploma mill, so that might actully give a _worse_ image... |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The more common problem seems to be those who immediately want to be an instructor. |
15:26 |
Jayleden Miles |
I'm just busy plotting away for the fall event we'll have. Y'all get no details until then. |
15:26 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Or claim to own the place... |
15:26 |
Beth Ghostraven |
oh, Mr Jarvinen, they're probably after that hefty paycheck! |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
As I mentioned last week, I've been a bit out of the loop lately, but plan to be ramping up and do some rework of the schedule system. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Indeed. Although we may be able to give it slightly more heft. |
15:27 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
And I will only mention that Larky and the Commons team have been admirable in my absence. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They have been. |
15:28 |
Beth Ghostraven |
.-'`'-. APPLAUSE APPLAUSE .-'`'-. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, one thing. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
I think it is probably also generally known by now that I am slowly extricating myself from the duties as dean. |
15:28 |
Larkylouz |
I've been out of the loop, too. Phrynne and Mr. Elfbiter do much more to hold down the plaza than I do. Also Gronk, Charlotte and Josain |
15:28 |
Larkylouz |
and Tasha. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If you fall asleep on the sim and it fills up, you may see a notice that you've been banned but aren't banned. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. We need a replacement eventually for Tali. |
15:29 |
Larkylouz |
We need a Dean of Engines. I'm not sure we can replace Tali. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In effect, you been ejected from the sim by banning and unbanning to make room. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Everyone can be replaced :) |
15:30 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
"the broom" |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was replaced and things hummed along quite nicely. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was replaced here and things hummed along quite nicely. That does not necessarily apply to other places I've been replaced in the past :) |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
I am working on getting things to a state with a good balance between functionality and maintainable simplicity. |
15:31 |
Jayleden Miles |
awww |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But Tali will be missed. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She's doing a great job of making sure all her projects are finished before leaving which we really appreciate. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Indeed she will be. |
15:32 |
Jayleden Miles |
Glad for that. Thank you for all that you do, Tali. |
15:32 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Tali, to clarify, you're just leaving the Dean's position, not Caledon, right? |
15:33 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) looks concerned. "Leaving SL? Or just the University?" |
15:33 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "Just the dean position. And I'll likely be around at the university still." |
15:33 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) sighs relief. |
15:33 |
Beth Ghostraven |
oh good |
15:33 |
Tali Rosca |
At the core, I just want a little more time to fiddle with my own projects. |
15:34 |
Jayleden Miles |
I should add, I still am in need of an assistant. Please apply to me. |
15:35 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) applies a Help Wanted sticker to Jayle's forehead. |
15:35 |
Jayleden Miles |
grins |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Jayle is Dean of Development -- funding, special events, ... |
15:35 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Umm, Jayle, you might want to be careful where you go with that sticker on... |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
All Deans have been heard from. Now lets take your questions. |
15:36 |
Jayleden Miles |
grins at Beth.... |
15:36 |
Beth Ghostraven |
:p |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I still handle some special events, like the upcoming VWBPE display, but those will transition over to Jayleden in time. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Going to close to the Caledon mental hospital with a sign so position could be .... shocking. |
15:37 |
Jayleden Miles |
erm...You can keep the VWBPE if you like! |
15:37 |
|
Phrynne thought the hospital was in Cape Wrath? |
15:38 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Not in the Guv's cellar? |
15:38 |
Jayleden Miles |
The Hospital was, but the mental one was in Tamrannoch for years. |
15:38 |
Lynette Zisara (zisara) |
Hasn't Cape Wrath been replaced by Loch Avie? |
15:38 |
Jayleden Miles |
Yes |
15:38 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Oh! that reminds me |
15:39 |
Beth Ghostraven |
On the Caledon Quest page on the aether, it refers to the "close to 50" Caledon sims |
15:39 |
Beth Ghostraven |
that number's a bit lower now, isn't it? |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'll have to do a recount. |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
37 |
15:40 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) sees 35. |
15:41 |
Mae Best |
What happened to the other sims? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Tectonic instability.... |
15:41 |
Leelee 'Short Stuff' Rossini (leelee78) |
What "fix" did LL implement that broke group chat so badly? |
15:41 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
I actually saw one sink beneath the waves |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
Oh, yeah, 35, sorry. |
15:41 |
|
Mae Best shakes her head... doggone fracking |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Caledon's population decreased and Desmond Shang (the estate owner) consolidated sims. |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
I saw "Caledon Loch Avie" and counted that row. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
(The two others there are Europa and Winterfell) |
15:42 |
Phrynne |
And Inish |
15:42 |
|
Lynette Zisara (zisara) blames mad science gone wrong (or possibly right?) |
15:42 |
|
Mae Best blames the chicken |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm more concerned with a possible cavorite shortage since the mines closed last year and the sky mountain deposits are getting played out. |
15:43 |
|
SnoBound blames the egg |
15:43 |
Phrynne |
we'll just have to find enlightenment some other way |
15:43 |
Mae Best |
Hire more dwarves? |
15:43 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Hamsters |
15:43 |
Jayleden Miles |
Group chats break at times, it's happened occasionally over the years. It's nothing new...just happens once in a while. The cause is suspected to be the tiring of the hamsters running on the wheels. Possibly during shift changes. |
15:44 |
Rollo (rolotomasi) |
you should try oven spit dogs |
15:44 |
Jayleden Miles |
Lots of Cavorite in Wellsian...I'm surprised the whole sim isn't floating. |
15:44 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
LL laid off a bunch of hamsters years ago and it has never been the same |
15:44 |
Rollo (rolotomasi) |
stronger than hamsters |
15:44 |
Mae Best |
Poor hamsters... I wonder if they need help with their resumes? |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Up with Guinea Pigs! |
15:45 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Hydration and hemp seeds are all they need |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Anything new on the tutor side of things, Miss Larky? |
15:47 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) judges Larky. |
15:47 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Nudges drrrrrp |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other staff quandaries? |
15:47 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
I can't see my keyboard anymore. |
15:47 |
Phrynne |
none current. |
15:48 |
Larkylouz |
No, I have been out sick all week, I am afraid. |
15:48 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, there is the potential Rose Garden loophole.. |
15:48 |
Beth Ghostraven |
David, that means it's time to rest your eyes |
15:48 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
? |
15:48 |
|
Mae Best whispers to David... lay off the twinkies |
15:48 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Elf, what's up with that? |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've got that on my list to talk to Desmond about, Elfbither |
15:48 |
Jayleden Miles |
Rose Garden loophole? |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We'll do the broom later... not contiguous with a meeting. |
15:48 |
Lynette Zisara (zisara) |
For the latest info: http://isslgroupchatstillbroken.com/ |
15:48 |
Jayleden Miles |
oh that parcel. |
15:48 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some banned people still seem to have access to a spot in the Rose Garde. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is a small strip of land next to it that's owned by Commonwealth |
15:49 |
Beth Ghostraven |
Band name!!! Rose Garden Loophole |
15:49 |
Liška Bystrouška (liska.fuchs) |
:) |
15:49 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
One banned guy was floating over that... I think it was yesterday. |
15:49 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
But it is in the sim, so later this week I will apply the bans there |
15:49 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Please remind me later Elf. |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Unless it's an estate ban (which David handles) or another EM, it's a parcel ban. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm going to get Desmond to transfer that to Oxbridge. |
15:50 |
|
Mae Best waves...Time for Class, Night All! |
15:50 |
|
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) smiles. I have no qualms about estate bans for that reason until Des repairs the loophole |
15:50 |
Jayleden Miles |
I was looking at that parcel - almost looks like someone didn't know how to plot a parcel and just left it... |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's supposed to be under our name |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And there are a couple parcels that aren't group deeded. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Where are the others? |
15:50 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Hello Ms Roxie. Welcome |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Library, which isn't in the COU group (and won't be) |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are other parcels for special purposes that a person could still be on after the main and lecture hall bans. |
15:52 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Folks, my vision has gone south on me again. I best take the advice and retire to RL and my audio book. |
15:52 |
Jayleden Miles |
Night David. Get better soon. |
15:52 |
Larkylouz |
Take care, David. |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes.... tc |
15:52 |
David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) |
Be well all. |
15:52 |
Meora (menchor) |
goodnight David |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye! |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He's still got some recuperation to do. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We can't do anything about the library. |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any other questions? |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nods, except possibly get some staff abilities to eject from it. |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
A note, please, to plaza workers. Particularly while David is out, please send your eject/ban notieces to me and to Wordsmith. |
15:54 |
Jayleden Miles |
Ask questions or we'll start singing and it's a dean rule that we all sing badly and out of tune! |
15:54 |
|
Larkylouz turns off her sound |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Added to the list, Wordsmith. |
