Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2015-02-08

15:09 Wordsmith Jarvinen Time enough that we begin, even if we have deans straggling (staggering) in.
15:09 Wordsmith Jarvinen Tali, still have your beginning spiel handy?
15:10 Tali Rosca Should we just start?
15:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen I think so.
15:10 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Welcome Everyone
15:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen We have a quorum.
15:11 Tali Rosca Well, as most of you know, this is the weekly QA with the Deans, where the deans of Oxbridge will (attempt to) answer questions about Oxbridge, Caledon and SL in general.
15:11 Wordsmith Jarvinen Our individual responsibilities described at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/admin.php
15:12 Tali Rosca With any luck, Carl or Jayleden will join us and can report on the auction.
15:12 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Other than my pride in my team, I have nothing significant to report.
15:13 Tali Rosca I don't know how many of you were there, but I saw several bidding wars running well over 5000L$, so it seems to have been quite a success.
15:14 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) That is excellent news, Tali
15:14 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) What had been auctioned, if I may ask?
15:14 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) I was there lost the bids onthe mushrooms
15:15 Tali Rosca A wide range of items, ranging from historical artifacts like Caledon roses and mushrooms, over jewelry to writing.
15:15 Wordsmith Jarvinen For any not aware, Oxbridge is entirely funded by patrons, sponsors, and individual donations. That includes the bulk of the monthly tier for the Oxbridge sim. About $70 (USD).
15:16 Tali Rosca Somewhat apropos, I can say that I am pretty close to having the networked version of the donation coins done.
15:16 Wordsmith Jarvinen Ahh. Here's Carl now.
15:16 Wordsmith Jarvinen And Jayle.
15:16 Tali Rosca Not that most people will see all that much of a difference, but it'll be easier to keep track of the donations, and see how much it amounts to each month.
15:17 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Some business people may not know that it is possible to sponsor classes or otherwise contribute and have a notice posted of their sponsorship
15:17 Wordsmith Jarvinen Or that the posted displays with deliver a notecard if touched.
15:17 Jayleden Miles relogging
15:17 Carl Metropolitan Sorry that Jayleden and I are late
15:17 Carl Metropolitan The Auction and Dance went a bit over.
15:18 Tali Rosca Do you have the final numbers from that?
15:18 Wordsmith Jarvinen That delay is entirely understandable, Carl.
15:18 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) We waited and filled time by flipping the floor
15:18 Tali Rosca -I was just mentioning that I saw several 5000+ bidding wars.
15:19 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) WB Jay
15:19 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) A barrel will not go well with that pretty dress.
15:19 Jayleden Miles thank you
15:20 Carl Metropolitan I have the final number
15:20 Tali Rosca *drumroll*
15:20 Carl Metropolitan 74,037L$
15:20 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) wooooooowwwww
15:20 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) outstanding!
15:20 Carl Metropolitan Including some donations made at the auction
15:20 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) DRINKS FOR ALL !!!!!
15:20 MikeVa Waco ☀ Ⓦ WooT Ⓣ Ⓦ WooT Ⓣ ☀
15:20 Sandie Harbour claps
15:20 Lindal Kidd wow!
15:20 Carl Metropolitan The highest bid item was Complete Set of Caledon & Winterfell Mushrooms with Case purchased by Gavenia Edenflower for 12,000L$
15:20 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:20 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:20 Lindal Kidd ♥+*`*♥. APPLAUSE!!!!!.♥*`*+♥
15:20 Larkylouz Wow - Awesome work, CArl and Jayle
15:21 Jayleden Miles Thank you
15:22 Carl Metropolitan This was very sucessful
15:23 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Somebody is having a mushroom banquet? :-)
15:23 Carl Metropolitan They are rare; I'm sure they will be displayed!
15:23 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) US$300 is a great hedge for future tier and expenses.
15:24 Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) ... and for a crown for Carl - LMAO
15:24 Carl Metropolitan This will give us a good fund to start expanding classes
15:24 Carl Metropolitan The second month of the patron program has gone well
15:25 Carl Metropolitan Everyone has paid
15:25 Wordsmith Jarvinen Perhaps about what it takes to run Oxbridge for a quarter (13 weeks) when in-class donations are included.
15:25 Carl Metropolitan for 25000 to tier
15:25 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) There were people asking about the clothing classes...
15:25 Lindal Kidd I'm told that someone was asking after Martini's clothing design class...do we know anyone who could resurrect that, or provide something similar?
15:25 Lindal Kidd ha! Mr Skysmith beat me to it
15:25 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) :-)(
15:25 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) :-)
15:25 Carl Metropolitan and the patron plaques are almost ready. I think all I have to do is get some passwords from Tali now.
15:25 Carl Metropolitan As are similar plaques for class sponsors.
15:26 Tali Rosca Actually, I think you already have them.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan And I'm shutting up now as I'm exhausted. My fingers hurt. Bug the other deans now :)
15:26 Carl Metropolitan Okay
15:26 Jayleden Miles grins
15:26 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) plaques?
15:26 Tali Rosca It's the BlueHost server. But I'll give you the paths.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan Then I will get them out very soon.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan Thank you
15:26 Wordsmith Jarvinen I'll put clothing design into my solicitation, Lindal.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan Please email me that.
15:26 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) what plaques?
15:26 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) perks up at that
15:27 Tali Rosca These. Some bragging rights for our patrons.
15:27 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Speaking of classes, I should say that the one I am tasked with (customs and manners) has been delayed due to my house repair situation. (I have to replace substantial flooring.)
15:28 V (vachon.myrtle) Sleigh riding indoors never ends well David
15:28 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) It was the ice skating pond in the bathtub that got us
15:29 V (vachon.myrtle) :)
15:29 Lindal Kidd ahem...
15:29 Lindal Kidd Larky completed the Ban and Eject Guidelines, and Phrynne finished and validated a new list of General Landmarks, so the Faculty Kit Update is making some progress. Kudos and thank you, ladies!
15:29 Jayleden Miles I still need to write the sponsor notecard...sorry about the delay.
15:29 Lindal Kidd and I've had some discussions with Professor Harbour about the Appearance classes
15:29 Carl Metropolitan Very good news!
15:30 Carl Metropolitan You have been busy with the Auction
15:30 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) I have put the final touches on the the full and abbreviated "rules document" and will send that out early this week to the Deans for final review and approval.
15:30 Sandie Harbour We have done some research and I have been gathering some materials
15:32 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Professor Harbour, this might be a good time to ask for suggestions about a replacement project for your clock building class.
15:32 Wordsmith Jarvinen Hmmm Let's think of it as additional projects to make a cycle of projects.
15:33 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Great idea
15:33 Sandie Harbour That sounds wonderful
15:33 Larkylouz Are you going to continue your clock class, Sandie?
15:33 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Ihave to say, I had a lot of fun building the clock
15:33 Sandie Harbour I will continue as long as you let me
15:34 V (vachon.myrtle) I made a variation of that clock and in EST which hangs proudly in my premium home
15:34 Sandie Harbour but some variety would be nice
15:34 Sandie Harbour smiles
15:34 Lindal Kidd I still have the class materials in my inventory!
15:34 Larkylouz Hee hee - you've seen the teacher's dungeon in the basement where we store teachers who try to leave, right?
15:34 Meora (menchor) Ha ha ha hahahaaa
15:34 Wordsmith Jarvinen I agree. We don't want to burn out or bore Sandie.
15:34 Sandie Harbour trembles
15:35 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) But Sandie, the food's good
15:35 Tali Rosca First we make them build the glass tubes we then store them in.
15:35 Mae Best Beware the pests in the basement
15:35 Larkylouz We should have a class in glass blowing!
15:35 Tali Rosca Some mad scientist setup could be a fun build.
15:35 Lindal Kidd I'm sorry, Chancellor, I must ask to be excused...my family is banging silverware on the table and shouting for dinner...
15:35 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) bye Lin
15:35 Lindal Kidd inconsiderate rugrats!
15:36 Wordsmith Jarvinen Best attend to them before they revolt.
15:36 Carl Metropolitan Goodnight Lindal
15:36 Lindal Kidd they are already revolting
15:36 V (vachon.myrtle) As long as they're not chanting attica you should be ok
15:36 Sandie Harbour I would love some input on short fun little projects
15:36 Lindal Kidd have a good week, everyone!
15:36 Larkylouz Good night, Lindal
15:36 Mae Best Night :)
15:36 Sandie Harbour I have been drawing a blank
15:36 V (vachon.myrtle) were you using a white pencil?
15:37 Larkylouz hmmmm I suppose you could teach people to make bullets if they were harmless. . .
15:37 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) looks for his facepalm animation
15:37 Sandie Harbour giggles
15:37 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) so what is the next fund raiser to prepare for?
15:37 Wordsmith Jarvinen I've made a note to include suggestion for projects in my solicitation to faculty, Miss Sandie.
15:38 Sandie Harbour Thank-you
15:38 Sandie Harbour There was another idea this week.
15:38 Jayleden Miles The next targeted idea for fundraising will involve the Gacha ideas.
15:39 Wordsmith Jarvinen rezzes a couple of bullets on the floor by his chair...
15:40 Mae Best wonders what else Dean W has in his pocket
15:40 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Are there questions from the Citizens, as long as we have them captive?
15:40 Carl Metropolitan There is some question as to whether or not we can do a Gacha resale store in Oxbridge; It might fall under the covenant prohibition against yard sales. I will double check with Desmond to be sure.
15:40 Mae Best You will warn us when you put in a switch for the flipping floor up here?
15:41 V (vachon.myrtle) How many licks does it take to get to the center of a toosie roll pop?
15:41 Jayleden Miles But the actual Gacha machines are ok as they are just vendors. So there is still plans for that.
15:41 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) unless overruled, I would not be inclined to support this floor being flipped
15:41 Mae Best Roger that!
15:41 Jayleden Miles Depends on the patience of the licker and if they decide to bite or not.
15:42 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Jayle, does the Circle in the village suit for a Gacha installation?
15:42 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) according to mr owl, it takes three
15:42 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) licks
15:42 Jayleden Miles Do you mean the chat circle?
15:42 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) There or nearby
15:43 Gronk Seriman "A-one. A-two-hooo! A-three. CRUNCH. Three."
15:43 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) yep that is right gronk
15:43 Jayleden Miles erm. it might be too small. I will know more once I talk to some creators and such.
15:43 Jayleden Miles The Target time for the Gacha even is fall so plenty of time yet.
15:43 Jayleden Miles event*
15:43 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) whispers "Oxbridge Support Tribal Casino"
15:43 Carl Metropolitan After RFL :)
15:44 Jayleden Miles Yes - and hopefully after I've finished with clinicals.
15:44 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) "Oxbridge Support Tribal Casino" Nice sound to it.
15:44 Larkylouz LOL
15:44 Jayleden Miles aims the spitball gun at David. Fires.
15:44 Carl Metropolitan I wonder if someone who was an enrolled member of an American Indian tribe and who logged on to SL from within tribal lands could run a casino in SL with permission from the tribe?
15:45 Carl Metropolitan I'd like to see LL's lawyers heads spin over that one.
15:45 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) California law... Probably a can of worms
15:45 Wordsmith Jarvinen Which reminds me to commend Carl and Jayle for getting today's auction and dance together quickly BEFORE RFL season swings into full activity.
15:45 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I assume that laws of California would prevail
15:46 Carl Metropolitan RFL does suck up most free cash for charity in SL. It is hard to compete with "curing cancer"!
15:46 Jayleden Miles smiles. Thank you, Wordsmith. There was even some last minute scrambling!
15:46 Larkylouz Native people have their own laws.
15:46 Sandie Harbour RFL?
15:46 Carl Metropolitan Relay for Life
15:47 Wordsmith Jarvinen Which is a months long fund-raising effort in Caledon.
15:47 Jayleden Miles American Cancer Society's 24 hour fundraising event, which in SL has become MONTHS
15:47 Sandie Harbour thank-you
15:48 Carl Metropolitan It is a good cause, and hard to compete with.
15:48 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) when is RFL over in sl?
15:48 Jayleden Miles July
15:48 Carl Metropolitan So anyone else doing fundraising always think of the RFL schedule
15:48 Carl Metropolitan Never.
15:49 Carl Metropolitan But peak activity is in the summer.
15:49 Jayleden Miles Starts February/March - the final day is July - the inner core of the people plan year round.
15:49 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) And many of the donation jars stay live year round too
15:49 V (vachon.myrtle) My cats are banging silverware on the table demanding dinner,... which is extraordinary considering they have no thumbs. See you all later
15:50 Tali Rosca And there are some events now and then spread over.
15:51 Wordsmith Jarvinen The upshot was that, if the fund-raiser for Oxbridge was not put together quickly, it would have been competing head-on with RFL dances, and other fund-raising activities.
15:52 Carl Metropolitan But between it and the patron program and the ad sales, we are in good shape with room to grow even more.
15:53 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) excellent
15:53 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Other concerns, aside from fundraising?
15:53 Larkylouz thanks so much for all your hard work, Carl and Jayle
15:53 Sandie Harbour claps
15:53 Jayleden Miles smiles thank you
15:53 Carl Metropolitan It was mostly Jayleden
15:53 Carl Metropolitan I only did about 20% of the work for the Auction
15:55 Carl Metropolitan I want to work some on making some new mesh stuff for Oxbridge. I'm almost there. I will go back to it for a while now.
15:55 Jayleden Miles Carl had to do the tough part and play auctioneer!
15:55 Carl Metropolitan My fingers are bleeding all over the keyboard :)
15:55 Jayleden Miles grins - well worth it!
15:56 Carl Metropolitan And we have VWBPE coming up, and Oxbridge will most likely have a display there
15:56 Carl Metropolitan Then we will recycle that for SLnnBirthday
15:56 Wordsmith Jarvinen I can say that one individual faculty letter that needed to go out before a general solicitation was sent, replied to, and Asst Dean Samm is doing some follow-up.
15:56 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Carl, will you send me a link to that at your convenience, please?
15:57 Carl Metropolitan http://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-worlds-best-practices-in-education-conference-2015-tickets-15070976697
15:57 Carl Metropolitan In fact, i will send that out to the entire Oxbridge team
15:58 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) good idea
15:58 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) I was involved in it before I retired, and many great ideas come from that group
15:59 Carl Metropolitan Were you a RL educator before you retired?
16:00 Carl Metropolitan Sorry. That's private.
16:00 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Sadly, yes. Until they made me dept chair.
16:00 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) My academic career is not all that private
16:00 Carl Metropolitan Tell them that you are now a dean and they will envy y ou :)
16:00 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Pity is more like it
16:00 Sandie Harbour I'm not an educator but play one sin sl
16:01 Carl Metropolitan If you teach people and they learn, you are an educator.
16:01 Carl Metropolitan In RL, only the first is required :)
16:01 Carl Metropolitan We have higher standards at Oxbridge!
16:01 Larkylouz giggles
16:02 Meora (menchor)Meora (menchor)Ha ha ha hahahaaa
16:02 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) but what about all those naked students we get? Cant teach them!!!
16:02 Jayleden Miles Just don't look down.
16:02 Larkylouz Being an educator is a matter of the heart, sometimes, not so much of the credentials, although those may help you go where you want to go.
16:03 Larkylouz meh, Jayle. Another place the LL failed their avis.
16:03 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Thank you LL
16:03 Sandie Harbour Question
16:04 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Sandie?
16:04 Sandie Harbour when I am in the square and get asked a question, many times i do not know the answer
16:04 Sandie Harbour is there a cheat sheet or something?
16:04 Larkylouz That happens to me, too, Sandie.
16:05 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) I think LIn's package for faculty will help a bit with that
16:05 Wordsmith Jarvinen You may defer to others present or to the COUG chat group.
16:05 Larkylouz That's when I introduce them to the Scholar's help chat, to Google, to the Search button.
16:05 Larkylouz And I often do the search for them, to educate myself as well as them.
16:06 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) One other resource is the COU faculty group, You can ask there too.
16:06 Larkylouz Thank you, David
16:06 Larkylouz Even ISC, in moderation
16:06 Jayleden Miles Just say 42. It's the answer to everything.
16:06 Sandie Harbour writes down 42
16:06 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) nope... Inflation... Its now 43
16:06 Tali Rosca I have noticed a trend about technical problems with SL:
16:07 Larkylouz Sandie, I always call Jayle. She's so helpful.
16:07 Tali Rosca SL is starting to work so well that when people have technical problems, it is beyond our ability to fix.
16:07 Larkylouz whispers, "She really is, but I tease everyone."
16:07 Tali Rosca All the old "known quirk; you just have to do..." are more or less eradicated.
16:07 Carl Metropolitan Also, for Firestorm specific problems you can always recommend the Firestorm support group or island.
16:08 Sandie Harbour I'm just talking about a list of common issues and resolutions
16:08 Larkylouz The tricky part about searching Google is that there is a lot of out-of-date information about SL out there.
16:08 Jayleden Miles Well the switching group tags to get myself to rezz still works for me. So I still use it and recommend it.
16:09 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) The issues I have seen brought to us in the Plaza are so varied that it may be hard to script something with out it being huge
16:09 Jayleden Miles Or even switching sims.
16:09 Larkylouz Sandie, Lindal is working on a faculty packet that will be jammed with information.
16:09 Sandie Harbour great
16:10 Wordsmith Jarvinen Well, unless there's something very quick, that brings us to the end of an hour (and to the quick of Carl's fingers).
16:10 Jayleden Miles grins
16:11 Wordsmith Jarvinen Thank you all for participating.
16:11 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) Again, I want to thank and praise my team for what they do in the Plaza
16:11 Gronk Seriman Thank you, Deans!
16:11 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) yes well done
16:12 Wordsmith Jarvinen Sleep well, Elf.
16:12 Larkylouz Thank you everyone
16:12 Carl Metropolitan Yes. I think it is time for me to log for a bit.
16:12 David Cooper-Pentewyn (deebeecooper) G'nite Elf
16:12 Carl Metropolitan Bye everyone!
