14:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome everyone. |
14:58 |
Jayleden Miles |
waves hello |
14:59 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Hi everybody |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Welcome to Q&A With the Deans. This is a combination of an open staff meeting, question and answer period about Oxbridge, Caledon, & Second Life. So if you have questions , please ask them. Otherwise us deans will start droning on about what we are up to in Oxbridge :) |
15:01 |
|
Lindal Kidd shuffles a Very Thick sheaf of notes... |
15:02 |
|
Phrynne digs into inventory for her quill pen to pass to Lindal, if necessary |
15:02 |
|
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) checks his contacts to ensure that Austin will be joining the lecture in time. |
15:02 |
|
Mae Best politely points out that lindal's notes are written on the back of take out menus |
15:03 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) looks at pile of untyped notes beside him |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So any questions? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
On Caledon? |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
I was hungry! |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Second Life? |
15:03 |
Lindal Kidd |
I would like to report a new scam |
15:03 |
Mae Best |
I do have a brief query as to how to become a tutor here |
15:04 |
Lindal Kidd |
a person is making new throwaway accounts and giving out "gift cards" in various groups. They will take your $L if you wear one and give it permission to do so |
15:04 |
Larkylouz |
I shall answer you in IM, Ms. Best |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky, could you take that question? |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Larky is in charge of Tutors |
15:04 |
Mae Best |
Thank you |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
Lindal, go first and then I'll explain |
15:05 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Why not answer publically ? |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
Seems others might want to hear as well. |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
I did, unless anyone has questions about what I just described |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh, not the permission_debit scam again. |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
yes |
15:05 |
Lindal Kidd |
just a new form of it |
15:06 |
Meora (menchor) |
any time you get a big yellow box THINK! |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, if you give an object permission to take your money, it can, unsurprisingly, take your money. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lindal, could you put together a brief notecard on it, with a picture of the box, so we could send out a warning to people in COUG? |
15:06 |
Mae Best |
Various new accounts are being created to give away the cards? |
15:06 |
Lindal Kidd |
yes, Mae. A different user name each day, apparently |
15:07 |
Mae Best |
All Newbie accounts then, not stolen older ones? |
15:07 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
How do they find avatar names to send that card to?? |
15:07 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
I would like to thank Ms. Lindal for her vigilance. |
15:08 |
Larkylouz |
Dean Kidd is our resident expert on such things. I highly recommend her Avatar Safety class |
15:08 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'm not sure, Mr Corleone, but I can think of several methods. Just random Search would work. |
15:09 |
Lindal Kidd |
I will post a notice with a summary of the scam in the University Scholars group |
15:09 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Well, there ARE groiups like NCE and BB, who would allow you to export their complete membrship list .... |
15:09 |
Larkylouz |
There are newbies at Welcome Island? coulda fooled me! |
15:09 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
*NCI |
15:10 |
Lindal Kidd |
enough for now though. I yield the floor to Larky |
15:10 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
;o) |
15:12 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
opening his ears wide now ... |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't think that it is possible to export the complete member list of a group from SL |
15:12 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Sure you can |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
Okay. The tutors here are responsible for helping folks who come through our'gates'. It is a volunteer position and initially requires a good knowledge of Second Life, familiarity with Caledon, a lot of patience and wilingness to explain things, deal with troublemakers, etc. If we don't know you fairly well, I will be requiring a probationary period. You may IM me to discuss further or to request an application. |
15:13 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
I would like to introduce the gathering to young Austin, today is his first of many upon the SL-grid. |
15:13 |
Larkylouz |
Carl, I was able to download part of the COU group the other day. I think I got al the names, but not all the information. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Are we currently requiring people to be in SL for at least 90 days? |
15:13 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
Uh...when he stops falling. |
15:13 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
Welcome to the grid. |
15:14 |
austinsito |
greetings my fellow humans |
15:14 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Wordsmith. I don't remember what sort of limit I put on that, but certainly a good knowledge is required. When I was new, I had to have been here 6 months. I'm very open to hearing what others think is needed. |
15:14 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
Uh....Austin is a bit of an Autist, sadly. |
15:15 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
Not in the literal sense, but good luck making him sit still. |
15:15 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
:) |
15:15 |
Larkylouz |
Please don't put down people on the spectrum, Mr. Evanz, even in play. |
15:16 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
I'm terribly sorry, do accept my apologies young Austin. |
15:16 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
seconded |
15:16 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
Well... do the guides need to be written? Or can we work with guides best 4 out of 7? |
15:17 |
austinsito |
i would like to interject on this |
15:17 |
austinsito |
cognac is simply terrible |
15:17 |
austinsito |
that is all. |
15:17 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
.... |
15:17 |
|
Marley Harley (marleyharley) holds laugh |
15:18 |
Jayleden Miles |
What guides, Satyrdey? |
15:18 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
hmph...*coff |
15:18 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
When I was new, I had to have been here 6 months. I'm very open to hearing what others think is needed. |
15:18 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
this comment previous.... |
15:18 |
Jayleden Miles |
Larky has all the information about becoming a tutor. Send request to her. |
15:18 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
ok |
15:19 |
Jayleden Miles |
Let's move forward with other questions. |
15:19 |
Larkylouz |
Frankly, Ms. Mynx, I will probably set a minimum and take each case individually. It is very much dependent on the individual |
15:19 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
nods and smiles |
15:19 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
sounds great |
15:20 |
austinsito |
Sir Chancellor! |
15:20 |
Jayleden Miles |
Does anyone have a question? |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi Austin |
15:21 |
austinsito |
Sir, i would like to openly admit to this class |
15:21 |
austinsito |
i am not autistic, simply new |
15:21 |
|
Mae Best whispers I think I wore a box on my head when I first joined SL |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Next question? |
15:22 |
Renna Fairey |
I'm sorry about being a wee bit late, but was wondering what one does to become a teacher here? |
15:22 |
|
Marley Harley (marleyharley) smiles to Mae's remark |
15:22 |
Mae Best |
Good Question |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do you want to teach a class Marley? |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, a similar answer to Miss Larky's except that I'm the person to talk to. |
15:23 |
|
Marley Harley (marleyharley) looks behind to see if there's another Marley |
15:24 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
Aaaaaand, he's been banned. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We tend to look for some acquaintance with the culture of Caledon or, at the minimum, compatibility with it (think Civility, Tolerance, Innovation, Cake). |
15:25 |
|
Larkylouz whispers that it may be a faux pas not to focus on chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. |
15:25 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
Sorry to disrupt but would it be possible for young Austin to be unbanned, ever? I assure you he is wonderful boy, just a bit....exciteable. |
15:25 |
Renna Fairey |
Funny you should mention cake, since we are frosting cupcakes right now... |
15:25 |
|
Samm Florian waves. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Beyond that a notecard with a proposal for a class, what the student outcomes are, and why you are able to organize and teach it. It is not a formal document. |
15:25 |
Renna Fairey |
Umkay, thank you |
15:26 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
You give him a new toy and he plays with it, give him second-life and....he tries to upstage a chancelor. |
15:26 |
Mae Best |
So not an application then Sir? |
15:26 |
|
Mae Best laughs with Vincent |
15:27 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
yup, good one... |
15:27 |
Larkylouz |
Ms. Best, the tutor application is not formal, either. It is really an explanatory document requesting a notecard response. |
15:27 |
Mae Best |
I see, thank you. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Renna did you have a class in mind you were interested in teaching? |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
An application, but not a highly formal one. We want it clear that teaching is for the benefit of the students, not, for example, implicit marketing for something else, and some sense that the person can organize and teach what they propose. |
15:28 |
Renna Fairey |
Yes, basic inventory control, intro to making gestures, and emoting for fun and profit. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A class, btw, doesn't have to be a weekly class, it can be a interactive workshop or an occasional seminar. |
15:28 |
Samm Florian |
Inventory's a class we ain't had fer a while, if ever. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Inventory could be a good class. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And yes, those would fit very well with our needs. Please send me a short proposal along what I've outlined above. |
15:30 |
Renna Fairey |
All righty |
15:30 |
|
Renna Fairey smiles |
15:30 |
Mae Best |
Thank you for the information |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Gestures & Emotion could be another. But I think we may have that one already? Or is it one we had and lost? |
15:30 |
Samm Florian |
Wendy still teaches roleplayin' I think? |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
Wendy touches upon it in her roleplaying class. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I don't think she goes into the nuances of creating gestures, however. |
15:31 |
Renna Fairey |
What I do is more all over SL, for diff situations. |
15:31 |
Mae Best |
Ms. Wendy does a god job on that subject in her class |
15:31 |
Samm Florian |
Duplicate classes ain't a bad thing, especially if they hit differnt timeslots. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If an inventory class isn't enough for a full hour, you could pair it with a class on making outfits, perhaps? Or on making a profile. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Talk to Wordsmith later. These could all be good. |
15:32 |
|
Renna Fairey nods |
15:32 |
Larkylouz |
There's enought to teach in an inventory class to fill several time slots! You might want to talk to me. I have several starts to such a class and would be happy to share them with a prospective instructlr. |
15:32 |
Larkylouz |
*instructor |
15:33 |
Renna Fairey |
A class must be an hour? |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The other understanding is that while RL needs outweigh SL, if you need to cancel, we appreciate knowing so that we can update the schedule or at least post a notice. Particularly true as we get back to posting in SL events. |
15:33 |
Josain Zsun |
I keep meeting Europeans in early mornings asking if any classes are offered to suit their time inworld. |
15:34 |
|
Marley Harley (marleyharley) nods to Zsun |
15:34 |
Vincent Murdoc Evanz (exrouge3) |
I guess I'll be taking my leave now, farewell everyone. |
15:34 |
Larkylouz |
I think you know, Josain, that I teach teh Basic Photography class once a month at noon. Coming up the first thursday of every month, this week. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It doesn't have to take a full hour and in general can't be longer that 1:45 or it doesn't give time for the next class slot. |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, the schedule should reflect the time change for next Thursday. |
15:35 |
Samm Florian |
If y'ain't taught a class in SL before, though, ya might be serprised by how much time they can take up. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Particularly if you have an interested class that asks questions. |
15:36 |
Satyrdey Mynx |
:) |
15:36 |
Renna Fairey |
I've taught before, back in the day on my first avvie SL paid me lol |
15:36 |
Renna Fairey |
That was 2006 tho |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I created a "How to make money in SL class" way back at NCI and I had to split it into two sections it took so long. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I thought it would take less than an hour |
15:37 |
Renna Fairey |
I think I took that class, Mr. M. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
All way out of date now :) |
15:38 |
Renna Fairey |
No more slingo, money trees, camp chairs lol |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is still camping. I see that every once in a while |
15:38 |
|
Mae Best laughs, my first real job in SL (2003) was teaching basic builds...paid by the lindens. Class was 35 minutes...after class could be hours |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But it's a waste of money. Your computer uses more money in power than you make in L$ |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Linden Lab killed the paid classes in 2006, I think |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There were people faking classes and abusing the system and they didn't want to deal with it. |
15:39 |
Lindal Kidd |
I'm just happy to be working here! |
15:39 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
Just for interest - how much did they pay for a 60 min class? |
15:39 |
Mae Best |
I took your class in the way back when Chancellor |
15:40 |
Mae Best |
I think it was 500L, they gave you a bot to record the number of people that attended and how long they were present |
15:40 |
Batista Corleone (batistacorleone) |
TY - interesting |
15:41 |
Mae Best |
*laughs* I still have my bot |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So any other questions? |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Finances are good; the Oxbridge patron program is entering its second month and we already have payments of seven out of ten pledges and it is only the first of the month. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The auction is coming along great. We have over twenty lots of items to big on. Jayleden has done a great job there. We are renewing the class sponsorship program and working to fill those boards too. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And that's 8 Feb? |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes February 8th Sunday Noon to 3pm |
15:45 |
Renna Fairey |
Whup, g2g, but I'll be back! |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Journey well. |
15:45 |
Jayleden Miles |
The voice in my head took form! |
15:45 |
Phrynne |
lol |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We are also going to try to sell the now blank ad boards by the stone circle to other steampunk victorian estates for 3000L$ a month. That might be a hard sell, but we are going to try. |
15:46 |
Lindal Kidd |
There's so often a wait list for Caledon property. I should think other Steampunk areas would be eager to catch the overflow |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Desmond has no problem with such ads, so I'm going to sell them :) |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or Jayleden will. I should leave that to her; it is her area. I tend to get overeager on fundraising stuff :) |
15:48 |
Jayleden Miles |
I'm happy with you wanting to take on that, actually. |
15:48 |
Jayleden Miles |
Contacting sponsors will be some work itself. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If you raise too much, we can raise the instructor stipend. |
15:49 |
Jayleden Miles |
I'm happy to divide that with you. |
15:49 |
|
Lindal Kidd raises a pleased eyebrow |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would love to be able to do that. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
More questions? If you don't ask them, I will keep talking! |
15:50 |
Phrynne |
I'd like to suggest that everyone try out the new furniture in the entry building and elsewhere on campus |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If the classes have sufficient draw, then much can come from donations. |
15:50 |
Phrynne |
It is mesh, multi-sit, and very comfy |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. I've been replacing the older sculpty stuff with lower prim prettier mesh items. |
15:53 |
Josain Zsun |
Curious: What is the LI trade off between sculpty & mesh items? |
15:53 |
Gronk Seriman |
Has the recent meshification yielded any benefits in the LI count? |
15:53 |
Marley Harley (marleyharley) |
g'night! |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Night, Mr. Harley. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Mesh can be optimized much more. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've probably saved about 30 to 40 prims from the changes so far. |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Not a lot, but every bit helps |
15:55 |
Lindal Kidd |
the campus is already quite prim-efficient. I'm amazed at the number of things we've fit into a Homestead region |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The ad panels in front of the lecture hall are now mesh -- 15 displays with a total LI of 6. |
15:56 |
Jayleden Miles |
That is very good. |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Again, not a lot but it save a LI of 9 over a set of individual prims. |
15:57 |
Mae Best |
Do mesh items hold up better at a shorter draw distance or do they degenerate like the sculpties? |
15:57 |
Josain Zsun |
I find they do. |
15:57 |
Mae Best |
Good to know, thank you |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If they are designed well, the hold up. Simplifying, but not losing total shape. |
15:58 |
Meora (menchor) |
depends on your LOD setting in graphics |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
My chair is an example, if you look at it from far enough the legs merge into a simple box, but it's still a chair. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
Essentially, you have complete control. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
If you *choose* to drop detail, you'll save a *lot* of LI. |
15:59 |
|
Mae Best trys not to upskirt Wordsmith while attempting a shorter draw |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
And you can choose exactly how to do it, by essentially creating a separate model for that level of detail. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You see the change about 10m outside the front door. |
16:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Sculpts are *far* more limited in how they deal with the LoD drop. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Before that the arms lose the inset from the front of the chair. |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
So mesh leaves the LI/detail tradeoff in the hands of the creator. |
16:01 |
Jayleden Miles |
My chair is sculpt - for comparison. |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
And if they are clever about it, they can drop detail almost invisibly, as the details become too small to be seen anyway. |
16:02 |
Lindal Kidd |
I see detail in both chairs out to my limit of visibility :) |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, in some cases it's not so much a tradeoff -- it's simply keeping the points that define the basic shape rather than the automatic grid thinning. |
16:03 |
|
Lindal Kidd hugs her graphics card |
16:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's the hour everyone. Thank you all for coming. |
16:03 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Deans, everyone |
16:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:03 |
Tali Rosca |
You can *sort* of do that with sculpts, too, since you know which parts of the topology grid will be dropped with each LoD. But it requires jumping through some hoops to make sure your "detail points" line up with the stable grid points. |
16:03 |
Mae Best |
Thank you for having us and providing such great information |
16:04 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me. |
16:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks you all. Sleep well, Elf. |
16:04 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:04 |
Ololo Petya (olopierpa) |
Good night |
16:04 |
Uebu |
Thank you for the information. |
16:04 |
Jayleden Miles |
Night all |
16:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye! |
