Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2014-12-07
15:01 | Tali Rosca | Welcome to this week's QA. As usual, this is a somewhat free-form QA and discussion about topics relevant to the running of Oxbridge. |
15:01 | Tali Rosca | As most of you know, you can see our area of expertise at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:02 | Larkylouz | LOL - andrea, you are all decked out! |
15:02 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | :-) |
15:02 | HOЯGH (plejadian) | :) |
15:02 | Tali Rosca | We will likely have some things to discuss tonight, but let us start with the normal questions. |
15:02 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I wonder if she can rein herself in. |
15:03 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | lol |
15:03 | Tali Rosca | So, any questions tonight? |
15:03 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Is dean martini ok. I do not see her |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | She has resigned. |
15:04 | Tali Rosca | Smackdown. |
15:04 | Tali Rosca | Ohwell. Rav, you're on. |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | She had a message for everyone. |
15:04 | Ravelli Ormstein | oh my... |
15:04 | Gronk Seriman | Wow! |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | Hello everyone. Due to burgeoning obligations and circumstances, i have resigned from Oxbridge, and returned my remaining land in Caledon. Simply put, i no longer have the time or money for any meaningful SL presence. This may seem abrupt, but should have been done some time ago. Oxbridge is stable, my personal tier was due, and my RL obligations increase daily. |
15:04 | Red Quixote | cut to the chase |
15:04 | Ravelli Ormstein | that was planed as last topic |
15:04 | Larkylouz | Uh oh! |
15:04 | Carl Metropolitan | The only guidance needed here is your own kindness and common sense, enriched with a bit of empathy. And do have fun. With any luck, in any little time i do have to be in-world, that is what i shall be doing. ~md |
15:04 | Larkylouz | OMG! |
15:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Ah |
15:05 | Carl Metropolitan | Real life sucks, but sometimes, it has to come first. |
15:05 | Red Quixote | there's no way of sugar coating it |
15:05 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | too bad ... |
15:06 | Gronk Seriman | That's just stunning! |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | There will be come minor reorganization in the coming weeks, as we are down two deans and a chancellor. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | Martini did two jobs: Dean of Commons and Chancellor |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | That's probably too much to expect of one person going forward. |
15:07 | Carl Metropolitan | And we still need to find a new Dean of Development to raise funds for tier and classes. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | But, Oxbridge will go one. This is a minor bump compared to some we have been through. |
15:08 | Larkylouz | Perhaps one ofyou could prepare a notecard saying what chores need to be done in the immediate future? I would be happy to take on something to help out. |
15:08 | Larkylouz | I will miss her dreadfully, I must say. |
15:08 | Carl Metropolitan | We will be discussing and deciding on stuff in the next week, Larky |
15:09 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As will we all, Miss Larky. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | She's not dead; she's not even gone entirely from SL! |
15:09 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | indeed |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | She will be around. |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | She just had to cut back drastically |
15:10 | Larkylouz | yes. still a bit of a shock to me. |
15:10 | Carl Metropolitan | Ravelli now has a few things to say about Martini's departure and Oxbrige. |
15:10 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | the music would seem to be appropriate |
15:10 | Ravelli Ormstein | all said already |
15:12 | Tali Rosca | This is pretty much news to all of us, so we still don't have any specifics about how to distribute tasks. |
15:13 | Larkylouz | ok |
15:13 | Tali Rosca | Other than that, I don't think there is all that much more we can say. |
15:14 | Tali Rosca | So unless there are any specific questions, we should perhaps move on with other topics? |
15:14 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Other than that our intent is to regroup and forage onward. |
15:14 | Red Quixote | Tally ho |
15:14 | Larkylouz | Tali ho? |
15:14 | Red Quixote | no pun intended |
15:15 | Larkylouz assures everyone that that was just a play on words and no intention to saddle Tali with undue responsibility
15:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Dean of Engines already is quite a steed to ride. |
15:17 | Tali Rosca | I know those news are hard to top, but any questions? |
15:18 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | I was wondering if the cou does a secrect snta? |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | We have never done that before. |
15:18 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | kay |
15:18 | Tali Rosca | It would actually be a fun idea, but no, nothing is planned. |
15:19 | Larkylouz | I got an email earlier that Kamiliah had kicked me (or one of my alts) out of the COUG group. Beth Cooper-Pentewyn was also having problems, according to david. I am still in the group, at least on this account. |
15:20 | Larkylouz | oops, sorry to interrupt |
15:20 | Tali Rosca | She may have been pruning what seemed like old, inactive accounts? -Though Beth at least is around; I don't know about your alt. |
15:21 | Larkylouz | That did occur to me. I don't care about the alts, and this account is fine. |
15:21 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We'd, have to check the particular account. And removed is not the same as banned. It's pretty common to weed out those who haven't logged for an extended time. |
15:22 | Tali Rosca | SL groups get unwieldy when they get too big, so removing inactive avatars makes sense in an open group like COUG. |
15:23 | Larkylouz | yes |
15:24 | Tali Rosca | As for the santa thing, can we make a last-minute drive to organize something, or is it an idea better left for next year? |
15:25 | Carl Metropolitan | I think we should wait. We are going to have a lot on our table over the next few weeks. |
15:25 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Indeed. |
15:25 | Larkylouz | I encourage everyone to either make it a volunteer-run activity or skip it. I think the Deans have enough on their plates. |
15:25 | Tali Rosca | I was sort of fishing for volunteers here :-) |
15:26 | Larkylouz | Perhaps it could be associated with Stereo Nacht's Christmas festival? I think she is the one organizing that. |
15:26 | Tali Rosca | There is also some talk about a huge skating rink all across the Northern Caledon. |
15:26 | Tali Rosca | With some evens to go with it. |
15:26 | Phrynne | Freezing the firth? |
15:26 | Tali Rosca | Yes |
15:26 | Gronk Seriman | Ooo! |
15:26 | Phrynne | I think that happened last year too |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It has happened before. |
15:26 | Larkylouz | Odd to just focus on evens. . . ;^) |
15:27 | Phrynne | I remember skating from South End to Winterfell |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | Rarely the *entire* firth. |
15:28 | Tali Rosca | -I know that, since Burroughs is the innermost of those sims. |
15:28 | Gronk Seriman | It's that darned Climate Change thing.... |
15:29 | Tali Rosca | But there will probably be a lot of Christmas events all over Caledon. |
15:29 | Larkylouz | Caledon does love their holidays |
15:31 | Larkylouz | afk |
15:31 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand.
15:31 | Tali Rosca | Yes? |
15:31 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Miss Gronk? |
15:32 | Gronk Seriman | Is the Library part of the Campus Meshification Plan? Or is it its own entity? |
15:32 | Ravelli Ormstein | yes, it is |
15:32 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | To both parts, then. |
15:32 | Ravelli Ormstein | but it might take a while of course |
15:32 | Ravelli Ormstein | currently we are working on the Entrance Hall |
15:33 | Gronk Seriman | Ah! |
15:33 | Tali Rosca | "We" being Ravelli, and some of us being backseat drivers now and then. |
15:33 | Ravelli Ormstein | and i already had a talk to JJ Drinkwater about making a mesh version of the Library, well, it might take a while |
15:33 | Red Quixote | I prefer the term 'consultant' |
15:34 | Carl Metropolitan | Oh good. He can be sensitive to changes made without prior approval. |
15:35 | Ravelli Ormstein | i will prepare a meshed Library one day, and keep in touch with him while finishing it, so he can be part of the development |
15:36 | Tali Rosca | Other things? |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | That looks cool. Will the final version still have the towers? |
15:37 | Carl Metropolitan | Or are you doing a more radical reinvention? |
15:37 | Ravelli Ormstein | yes, perhaps one tower will be get another shape and size |
15:37 | Ravelli Ormstein | no, not radical |
15:38 | lovejoy2199 | Flying Buttress. |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | May I make a suggestion? When you redo the stained glass, please get rid of the tiny NCI logos in it. |
15:38 | Tali Rosca | As with the other buildings, I think it is more a matter of refining some details and upping the detail level a bit where LI allows for it. |
15:38 | Ravelli Ormstein | oh, yes, i will |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | I like the point details on the flying buttresses. |
15:39 | Ravelli Ormstein | it is just a brainstorming so far |
15:39 | Tali Rosca has been pushing for the gothic look.
15:39 | Ravelli Ormstein | well, lets move on to other questions |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Other input would be what you might like to see on the class schedule that you think might be a draw. |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Feel free to drop me a notecard. |
15:41 | Red Quixote | that is a good point, we will have to find replacement for Martini's classes |
15:41 | Tali Rosca | Speaking of, the Advanced Building classes seem to be somewhat unstable? |
15:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes. |
15:41 | Carl Metropolitan | She was teaching Avatar Appearance and one on Clothing Creation? |
15:42 | Red Quixote | texture Basics |
15:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Textures and Basic Clothing. |
15:42 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Texture Basics class filled the region lately. |
15:43 | Carl Metropolitan | Is she okay with someone else using her notes and slides? |
15:43 | Red Quixote | I would be willing to assume the Texture class |
15:44 | Tali Rosca | That's a good question, Carl; we should check. I haven't heard either way yet. |
15:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | She gave me "Carl's Texture Class", but it was without perms to copy or transfer. |
15:46 | Red Quixote | a class would have to be written then, slides prepared etc |
15:46 | Tali Rosca | This may be a good call in general to anybody who has a topic they'd like to teach. |
15:46 | Tali Rosca | Oxbridge can always use teachers. |
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | I wrote the texture class originally, but she made significant updates |
15:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I'm sure I could get back to her and get a copy of what she has, but things have changed also. |
15:47 | Carl Metropolitan | It's like the tutorial posters; I wrote the originals, but then Ravelli redid and improved them all so much my work is hardly visible :) |
15:48 | Tali Rosca | Much like SL itself, really. Never-ending iterations. |
15:48 | Carl Metropolitan | I also wrote an outline for a full perm mesh class that I never got to finish. If someone's interested I could pass that off to them. |
15:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | She may have given me your original, Carl. I don't know yet. |
15:48 | Red Quixote | full perm mesh,.. as in for clothing creation? |
15:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I may get back to you on that Carl after this next week, which has a lot in it already. |
15:49 | Red Quixote | Martini will be a tough act to follow :P |
15:50 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | She will, since she also made or influence creations on the grounds. |
15:50 | Ravelli Ormstein | as she wrote in her email, she will share things with us if we need them |
15:50 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | What is a 'full perm mesh class', please? |
15:51 | Tali Rosca | Carl, can you elaborate on the idea? |
15:52 | Carl Metropolitan | Most sellers of Mesh items and clothing in SL don't make their own mesh models. They purchase untextured "full perm" mesh items and texture and combine to make unique(ish) creations. The class |
15:52 | Carl Metropolitan | was designed to teach people how to do that. |
15:52 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | thank you |
15:53 | Carl Metropolitan | Most mesh clothing and many, many mesh items are done that way. |
15:53 | Tali Rosca | Parts of it would have a certain overlap with texturing in general. |
15:54 | Carl Metropolitan | Not really. |
15:54 | Carl Metropolitan | Let me pass you my outline |
15:55 | Carl Metropolitan | It is pretty much seperate. |
15:55 | Carl Metropolitan | Also, if we want more classes, I propose we go look at the NCI and Builder's Brewery lists and steal ideas. |
15:56 | Carl Metropolitan | I got lots of good ideas from stealing them :) |
15:56 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | ;o) |
15:56 | Tali Rosca | I suspect we need teachers more than ideas, though. |
15:56 | Tali Rosca | Though granted, some may jump at a good idea. |
15:56 | Ravelli Ormstein | i was working on two classes, one about Materials, the other about Performance, but you know, there is not enough time :-) |
15:57 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, there is an extended faculty. Some might have taken an extended break and consider a return. |
15:57 | Meora (menchor) | I was interested in doing Masterials |
15:57 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. That outline I mentioned has been sitting on my hard drive for six months! |
15:57 | Carl Metropolitan | I think I first ran it by Wordsmith in the late spring. |
15:57 | Tali Rosca | Materials could certainly use a class. |
15:58 | Meora (menchor) | I started working on it |
15:58 | Meora (menchor) | and running past a couple of people I need to fix some things |
15:58 | Wordsmith Jarvinen Perks up his ears at the mention of someone working on materials.
15:58 | Ravelli Ormstein | sounds great, Miss Meora |
16:00 | Tali Rosca | Any last question? We're almost out of time. |
16:00 | Ravelli Ormstein | has anyone heard an additional bell at campus? |
16:02 | HOЯGH (plejadian) | i dont have sounds on mostly :) |
16:02 | Carl Metropolitan | Same here. |
16:02 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Have you added one, Rav? |
16:02 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | i may have. wasn't paying attention. |
16:02 | Red Quixote | he means the bell tower clock |
16:02 | Ravelli Ormstein | you miss the entire athmosphere, its great with headphones on and walking around |
16:02 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | i heard the chimes |
16:03 | HOЯGH (plejadian) | hehe thanks for the advice Ravelli..i have headphones handy here :) |
16:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | no, i have not added a new bell, but i heard a new bell yesterday |
16:03 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | should more bells be added? |
16:03 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | I could not tell a new bell from an old one, or vice vrsa ... |
16:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | no, we don't need more bells for now, perhaps later |
16:04 | Meora (menchor) | its steampunk the clock shouls whistle |
16:04 | Tali Rosca | What we need is more cowbell! |
16:04 | Carl Metropolitan | We need more whistles! |
16:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | :-) |
16:04 | HOЯGH (plejadian) | well christmas is coming..so bells are great during this time :) |
16:04 | Tali Rosca | With that, thanks for today. |
16:04 | Red Quixote | more cowbell,.. definitely |
16:04 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) runs away from jingle bells...
16:04 | HOЯGH (plejadian) | lol |
16:04 | Gregorovich Dragonash (mentadent) | lol |
16:04 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thank you all for coming and participating. |
16:05 | Ravelli Ormstein | many thanks for coming |
