Tali Rosca |
Welcome to this week's QA where we, the deans of Oxbridge, will answer questions pertaining to the operation of the University, including relevant topics about SL-at-large. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
As most of you know, we each have an area of responsibility (as seen here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php). |
15:01 |
Lolly (lollylawl) |
oh |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
So, without further ado, let us set to the questions. Anybody? |
15:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
How well has the New Lecture Hall survived its first full week? Any feedback from the professors or students? |
15:03 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i had no complaint so far |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Appears to work well. Played with the light switches last week. |
15:04 |
Larkylouz |
I think it is quite lovely. Sometimes the light switches don't rez, but I assume that is my problem. |
15:04 |
Martini Discovolante |
(FYI -- i am on an ipad, in slgo.. soi may disappear, or -- surprise-- type worse thsn normal) |
15:05 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Larky, is it the entire Control Panel which don't appear, or only the tree switched for the lights? |
15:05 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
*switches |
15:06 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello Carl |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi. Sorry I'm running late |
15:06 |
Larkylouz |
Only the lights that let me turn the lights on and off - switches. |
15:06 |
Martini Discovolante |
hi carl! |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hi Carl, just getting started. |
15:06 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
ok, the mesh of it might change again, so lets see if that work better then |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
Okay. I'll try them again. |
15:07 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the three switches are separate and linked objects, perhaps they are too small from distance to get rezzed |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
I think I was adjusting from front row of seats. |
15:08 |
Larkylouz |
I can see them now, from where I am sitting. |
15:08 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
hmmm, interesting |
15:08 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
ok, i will keep that in my mind |
15:08 |
Martini Discovolante |
Ravelli and team deserve a huge applause for all the building upgrades... esp the Lecture hall. :) |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can I take a moment to address the elephant in the room? |
15:09 |
Larkylouz |
Absolutely! |
15:09 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
elephant?!? ohoh |
15:09 |
Martini Discovolante |
and today we had two "Moles" visiting. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
heh! |
15:09 |
|
Larkylouz claps entthusiastically and goes for her spelling book |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm just curious as to what it is for? |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Just to see when and who noticed it. ;) |
15:10 |
Martini Discovolante |
that is the last name of the LL building team. |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
It's the thing nobody talks about when there are no questions. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I just wanted to be able to say "Can I take a moment to address the elephant in the room?" and be utterly literal about it. |
15:10 |
Larkylouz |
Is this the time to congratulate Martini on giving me a heart attack when I saw 'Phillip Linden" standing in the plaza. It turned out to be a non-living avatar. |
15:10 |
Martini Discovolante |
oh sorry. |
15:11 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
:-) i had that too |
15:11 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
(Finnish version seems to be "rhino" instead of "elephant") |
15:11 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:11 |
Martini Discovolante |
i thought maybe we would decorate him instead of a tree this year. |
15:11 |
|
Larkylouz giggles. |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
We can just turn him upside down and have the glittering pieces be the star. |
15:12 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yes, lets set him on fire, like a christmas tree |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
On a related topic, would anyone mind if I replaced the scultpy furniture in the cathedral with mesh stuff? I will pay for it. The only ones I would like to keep are the old West Trade globes. Will doing so cause any problems in light of any planned future upgrades to the cathedral area? |
15:13 |
Martini Discovolante |
not to my knowledge--- thst would e nice carl. |
15:14 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Carl, my idea was to make our own mesh furnitures, which we can use all over the region |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh. I can wait for that, then. |
15:15 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
besides of this i have some more ideas about using the areas there, but it still needs time to create |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sounds like a preliminary plan exists |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Will you be keeping the garden area? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sorry, a garden area? |
15:17 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i would like to change it, so all these 'tools' which are spread over the region get collected there. but it still can be a garden. |
15:17 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
tools, like the one to stop animation, to messure avatar height, region and grid stats,... |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
Incidentally, I have an update to the height script. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's a very good idea |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
The one we have currently is an old version which underreports. |
15:18 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the are infront of the Lecture Hall has to cleaned up a lil bit, in my opinion |
15:18 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
*area |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
We could perhaps use that opportunity to make some items for it, rather than the random geometric shapes they have now. |
15:19 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yep |
15:19 |
Martini Discovolante |
:) |
15:19 |
Martini Discovolante |
brb one minute. |
15:20 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
and... the left area in the Cathedral, which is in office style now. what about putting the Mac posters there? |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The three large ad posters need to stay. Desmond has sold them based on that location. |
15:20 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yep |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The posters in the doorway are intended to "hit" people leaving again with those points. They are deliberately redundant. Putting them in the office area would not be of any use. If you want to remove them, that's okay, but moving them out of the direct path would be pointless. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It might be better to replace them with Martini's Rules and Safety posters. |
15:22 |
Gronk Seriman |
Is there a history behind the office area? I always thought it was odd, abandoned, wasted space. |
15:22 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
thats a good point, Carl |
15:23 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
By the way, is there any new version of the deform fix... thing...? |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The cathedral was created by Desmond (who initially built all the oxbridge buildings) as a centerpiece. We only used the circle for rezzing new people so the areas on the side of the path were just filled with something visually interesting that could be used by helpers to sit down in. |
15:24 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Elf, i never used such a tool myself, but i received on recently |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Better uses of the space would be welcome. |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I meant the one in the entrance hall. |
15:25 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the pole to stop animations? |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The "Cathedral" is another name for the entrance hall |
15:25 |
Martini Discovolante |
back. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We call it that because of the design |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The spires and flying buttresses |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Elf were you thinking of the scripting or the design? |
15:27 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Usage. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
I have an undeformer pack which I think is newer than the one in the cathedral. |
15:27 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Shape is not that important but the use of the item. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
But I still don't have all that much luck undeforming from a micro shape, for example, always ending up with my feet in the ground. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
So I need a relog anyway. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
Which makes any undeformer tool just one confusing, non-functional step. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
YMMV |
15:29 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, It has been there to help newcomers who may not have similar items of their own as of yet. |
15:29 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And it was there before the option to stop animations appeared in the official viewer. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
...but if those items don't work anyway, we might as well just tell them to relog, rather than direct them through an ineffectual dance routine. |
15:33 |

15:34 |
Fountainview |
Could you talk about Caledon and how it works as a community? |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Tradition, inertia, and lots of volunteerism. |
15:35 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And weird humor :-) |
15:35 |
Larkylouz |
Lots of dances! |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And sex kept above 512 meters! |
15:35 |
Larkylouz |
Krakken light fixtures |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sky krakken! |
15:35 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Hidden elder signs.. |
15:35 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the community is mainly in the group Independent State of Caledon, the group for residents and friends |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And a covenant that ensure an ability to wander around without being sent home or encountering ban lines (below 500 m) |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
Caledon is rather loose-knit as such. It is mostly a matter of people gravitating here for a love of the shared aesthetics and semi-Victorian mores. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hey--since we put those Elder Signs out we've had no destructive island explosions! |
15:36 |
Larkylouz |
Or the masochism of the everpresent puns |
15:36 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Not to mention the good company |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A culture of tolerance, civility, innovation, and ........ cake. |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But there are lots of spin-off groups associated with the Independent State of Caledon |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Like the Caledon Oxbridge University Group. |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or the Caledon Library |
15:37 |
Tali Rosca |
Largely self-organizing, though anchored through the Independent State of Caledon group and group chat. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And anyone can start one. And start doing things. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It helps to live here, but is not necessary :) |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Though if you start the "Caledon NASCAR Appreciation Society" people might look askance on you for being a touch out of period. |
15:39 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
:-) |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
Competitive Clank Racing, however... |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Airship races. |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The theme being Victorian although not enforced in a strict sense. |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Or "Gaslight Fantasy" if you prefer. |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
With a distinct fantasy slant. |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
...said the talking cat. |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
victorian-steampunk... the latter leaves a lot wide open. |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Village of tinies... |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
Did that actually *answer* anything? |
15:41 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
to get in touch with the community, the best is to explore it, meet the friendly people, perhaps joing of the groups to stay in touch with events and drama, and eventually having a piece of land somewhere, which is not necessary of course |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
it has homogenized a bit since the early days. |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
Joining the ISC group and listening in on the chat there is definitely a way to keep in touch. |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
you cab n find dances and events in the Steamlander... there is a sin outside for info. |
15:41 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
btw, we have the Hall of Caledon next to the Cathedral here at Oxbridge, it holds a lot of information about Caledon |
15:41 |
Fountainview |
How do you join it? Or find homes? |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
To find a home (a parcel of land) in caledon, you rent it from Desmond Shang, who is the estate owner. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He owns all the Caledon sims. |
15:42 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
finding homes by contacting Desmond Shang, he has a list of available parcels |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And makes part of his RL living on them. |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The Guvnah, Desmond Shang, lists places available in his profile. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And sends three kids to college in California based on some of the profits! |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Although farm more of that has been coming from other consulting projects. |
15:43 |
Tali Rosca |
I think nominally, the ISC group are for people who have land in Caledon, but practically, it is for people interested in the Caledon society in general. |
15:43 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Does lots of RL consulting as well. |
15:44 |
Fountainview |
Ok, I'll try to find out what the price ranges are and make a decision. |
15:45 |
Martini Discovolante |
there is a sign here i think. |
15:45 |
Martini Discovolante |
is it still here? i cannot quite see... |
15:45 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the white one at the wall? |
15:45 |
Martini Discovolante |
desmonds sign. yes |
15:46 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
it says: Rate: SL 475/wk for 234 prims, SL 950/wk for 489 prims,... |
15:46 |
Martini Discovolante |
that has prices on it -- or in it.. i am on an ipad and have no zoom. |
15:47 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
MissFountainview, do you see that sign at the left wall? |
15:47 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
no, right wall from your direction |
15:48 |
Fountainview |
Yes, I see it now. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Right now Desmond has four parcels for rent listed in his profile |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
I think that covers it for the crash course in Caledon, if we have other topics for the last 10 minutes? |
15:49 |
Martini Discovolante |
there are two larger ones available in the village i believe too. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. It is best to email him. He doesn't always keep his profile updated |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If Desmond Shang is not around, Jayleden usually knows what's available if I remember correctly |
15:51 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i don't think he is still in charge of parcels |
15:51 |
Martini Discovolante |
best to contact Desmond. |
15:52 |
Fountainview |
Ok, I will. |
15:52 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
:-) |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Email is best. SL is notorious for losing IMs. |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
desmondshang@gmail.com |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
For the size of parcel, Caledon parcels tend to be double prims, twice the SL standard, since part of the land is commonwealth land which is not prim intensive. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or drop Desmond a notecard. |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
Other questions for the last minutes? |
15:55 |
Meora (menchor) |
are the transcripts of the meetings up to date? |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They are except for today's. |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
They are usually posted within minutes of the QA ending. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, that can vary .... but often. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One recent week we did not have Q&A but were at the Harvest festival instead. |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
...and I don't think we need to have records of the deans dissing people and subsequently being dunked in water. |
15:57 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I think the most dunked one was not a dean :-) |
15:57 |
Larkylouz |
Not text records. I demand full length movies |
15:57 |
Martini Discovolante |
i have to scoot--- bye all! |
15:57 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
bye Martini |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
tc Martini. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
We are just about out of time anyway. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
Last chance for a question. |
15:58 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Larky, you wish a screencast from the Q&A? |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I think she wanted one from the dissing and dunking. |
15:59 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Might take lots of bandwidth... |
15:59 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
oh, i can offer to share some photos of Dean Jarvinen got dunked... :-) |
15:59 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello Horgh |
15:59 |
HOЯGH (plejadian) |
