Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome all. |
15:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hello |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Welcome, here at the tail end of Halloween. Unsurprisingly, this is the weekly "QA with the Deans", where we will endeavour to answer questions about the running of Oxbridge, and related SL topics. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Each dean has an area of responsibility, as seen here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
But as I often say, the deans try to keep an ear out for what is generally happening in SL, so we can often answer things not strictly related to our area of expertise. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
So who has the first question? |
15:02 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
WEll, to something we were dialoguing on later. True reflective technology in SL. Is it possible? |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It is possible, but not something LL has ever implemented. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You see it in many video games and MMOs. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The technology is here because LL uses it on water. |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
Technically, yes. Some have even implemented it in 3rd party viewers. Whether LL will include it in the standard viewer is anybody's guess. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But it is not currently available to builders |
15:04 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Thank you |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
My guess is that they are not in a hurry to add more performance requirements to SL at the moment. |
15:06 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
To that, what, if any, changes are expected to happen to SL in the future? What's the buzz? Particularly on increasing enrollment in SL |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It would be more convenient for death rays. |
15:06 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
*Chuckles |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
On a tangent from there, we will very soon have the benchmarking viewer. When that one installs, the graphics settings will be recalculated, based on the performance and capabilities of the card. So it will be interesting to see the statistics for which features people will have then. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Here is a good way of keeping track: |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
https://modemworld.wordpress.com/category/news-updates-opinion/sl-project-updates/2014-project-updates/ |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's from Inara Pey's blog "Living in the ModemWorld" which is a great source for news about what's being worked one. |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
As for major (or even minor) strategic changes to SL, I am rather in the dark. LL has been playing the cards fairly close to the chest lately. |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, she keeps up on the development meetings. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The top level of that blog is good too. It covers SL more generally. Much more detail than New World Notes, which is probably the second rank source for SL news. |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
Between Inara and Nalates (at http://blog.nalates.net/), you'll be pretty well covered about such updates. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://nwn.blogs.com/ |
15:10 |
Meora (menchor) |
That viewer was released on the 30th |
15:11 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Ive never seen one shown in notices, but are there scripting classes offered in Caledon? |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also Jo Yardley's blog, too |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://joyardley.wordpress.com/ |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She has LL connections :) |
15:12 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Thank you Carl, excellent resources |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
The benchmarking is in the 3.7.20 line, which is still considered "candidate". We're at 3.7.19 for the main viewer release currently. |
15:12 |
Meora (menchor) |
we had a mandatory update to it I assumed it was out |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There is a basic scripting class on Mondays at 5pm |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've a basic one on Monday's, although I've been sporadic the last bit. (scripting class). |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Other than that, our scripting schedule is pretty non-exisitant. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You can also ask questions in the scholars group. |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
In the past when we've added scripting classes, the have never "stuck" due to various issues. No one's fault; just bad luck. |
15:13 |
Red Quixote |
Poseballs and Attachments deals with scripting, as it relates to animation |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
What would be interesting for a scripting class? Basic concepts? Special categories of commands? |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can also try Builder's Brewery or NCI other similar places for classes. |

I would love to see a scripting of clothing to make things light up or change appearance etc... |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://www.urockcliffe.com/calendar-of-events/ |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are scripts that can do stuff like that for sale on SL marketplace, too. Some are even free. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Takes notes. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Check out the two LSL Wikis for lots of scripting help and free scripts http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Portal http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=HomePage |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
But such things are often closely tied to the objects they are in, which makes it hard to use a generic script. -And also somewhat hard to teach, since you often end up covering several things, only one of them actual scripting. |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
I would like to discourage the use of LSLWiki. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Why Tali? |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've found it helpful. |
15:16 |
|
Gronk Seriman panics trying to keep up with all the wonderful links. Then relaxes. The Q&A transcript will have them all. |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
It is outdated and not maintained. |
15:17 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Tali means the old .net page i guess |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It will. Miss Gronk. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Even so, a second explanation of the same stuff can be helpful. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It seems maintained, in terms of having various newer LSL calls added. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But take Tali's advice and go to http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Portal first |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
She knows scripting. |
15:17 |
Vivian Klees |
may I add Ferd's site as well? |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I just know how to parrot off new user resources :) |
15:17 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yes, that is the better source nowadays |
15:18 |
Vivian Klees |
http://www.free-lsl-scripts.com/cgi/freescripts.plx |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
Practically all information form LSLWiki has been moved to the http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Portal |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
And the latter is the one which is being actively maintained (by the same people who contributed to LSLWiki). |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
The SL wiki also has a script library: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Library |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I forgot about Ferd's library. Excellent suggestion. |
15:20 |
Vivian Klees |
ty |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Alicia Stella, also has a free scripts section. http://www.aliciastella.com/ |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
Be careful about blindly copying old scripts, though. There are a lot of old freebie scripts in circulation from pretty much the first days of SL, and they are... really not the best way to do things today. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A number of ways to learn from examples. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do keep in mind that SL2 (if and when it appears) will not use LSL (the Second Life scripting language), but the understanding of coding and program structure you gain from working with LSL will still be valuable on the new platform (again, if and when it shows up) |
15:21 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
And, if and when anyone goes there/ |
15:22 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Will all we have in SL be rendered obsolete in SL2 ? |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
LL has been mum on which scripting language SL2 will use. |
15:22 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) groans about the speculation |
15:22 |
Vivian Klees |
yes those old ibm vehicle scripts are really usable for Havok |
15:22 |
Vivian Klees |
not |
15:23 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
well, first you would have to transfer your SL items to SL2, but i don't think they will give us a tool to transfer prim sets directly to SL2. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
Let me quote, "Body shapes, skeletons, animations, scripts, etc. will all change to jump into the future a bit..." |
15:23 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
but that is so far away, i would not think about it today, just give them time to tinker on it |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Here's links to my summary of news on SL2: |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://jcarlhenders.tumblr.com/post/90590965124/direct-links-to-blog-posts-on-second-life-2 |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
That doesn't mean that there will not be some conversion tools, though, for things which *can* be converted. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Not much has been released since those have been updated. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Lots of quotes from Ebbe and links to interviews and the like. |
15:25 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
that is a great source, thank you Carl |
15:25 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Yes, thank you |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also check out Ebbe's Designing World's interview: |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2014/10/07/designing-worlds-ebbe-altberg-video-and-transcript/ |
15:26 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And his impromptu Q&A session at Oxbridge last week. As one of the deans for a transcript. |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
There more I hear, though, the more I get a feeling that LL is not simply making a technical upgrade to SL. It sounds to me that there is some conceptual changes underlying it. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Definately |
15:27 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
so, a fundamentally new interface. A new world in fact |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think Ebbe's various tweets, interviews, and forum posts have made that clear. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
At the same time, LL is fully aware that they cannot afford to lose the existing population. How they balance those two things, nobody know. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. A entirely new world. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They keep SL1 running. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And hope that there are enough people moving over to seed SL2 with enough content to bring in the masses. |
15:28 |
Vivian Klees |
it seemed to keep SL1 running as a just in case |
15:28 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i guess we all would give it a try |
15:28 |
Meora (menchor) |
there was a comment about starting with a portal somewhere to SL2 from SL1 at the start |
15:28 |
Larkylouz |
I would be interested in hearing people's opinions on Ebbe's visit last week. I felt frustrated by the reluctance to consider Oxbridge an educational organization. I realize these people are not educators, but still. Setting guidelines isn't *that* difficult. |
15:29 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Perhaps there will be a merge so one can toggle between Meora, that would be a reasonable and intelligent maneuver to allow current users to merge into the new SL2 |
15:29 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
Is there a link to a transcript of the Q&A? |
15:29 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are NOT an educational organization. we are only in SL and do not qualify under the tax codes in that capacity |
15:29 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Larky, it seems, Mr Altberg still don't know what we are actually doing in detail, and why. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
There is some work ongoing about a closer collaboration between LL and resident-driven help areas. I don't think we will ever be considered "educators", though. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
...as Martini just said. |
15:30 |
Larkylouz |
I was speaking of our function, not our tax status. |
15:30 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Will you still be Deans in SL2 or will you have to start again as freshmen? :D |
15:30 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:30 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
:) |
15:30 |
|
Gronk Seriman smirks |
15:30 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Depends on whether titles require uniforms... |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
This bit from the Designing Worlds Interview and NWNs indicates a possible change of heart from LL on support for places like Oxbridge: |
15:30 |
Martini Discovolante |
we may all have gone outside to play by the time it gets off teh ground. |
15:30 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://jcarlhenders.tumblr.com/post/99974908794/linden-lab-community-portal-support-turnaround |
15:30 |
Anaïs (jujue) |
hehe |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As does Ebbe's visit here |
15:31 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
even in SL1 we have to learn each day, so it would not make that big difference. the basics are the same in each virtual world |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
However, anyone who has been in SL for years has to realize LL support can be a two edged sword, and must be evaluated carefully |
15:31 |
Larkylouz |
Good point, Carl. |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
The more we are given, the more can be pulled away from under our feet. |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
we can consider that rationally if and when anythign happens. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Currently there are no plans to move Oxbridge to SL2. We are in wait and see mode now. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And can disappear at the drop of a pin. |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
The deans pretty much on principle do not speculate about SL2. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It would also make a huge difference if Desmond decides to have an offshoot of Caledon in SL2. Currently he is not leaning towards that. |
15:32 |
Carl Metropolitan |
He's even more cynical about LL than I am. |
15:33 |
Tali Rosca |
He is about as angry over the ToS issue as I am. |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The revised, revised ToS that was supposed to fix things is very sloppily written. LL should fire their lawyers. It is so confusing that it provides creators no certainty and LL no certain protection. |
15:35 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
The TOS is jjust poorly considered lawyers prattle, surely there are inherent rights that the population has that can be fought in favor of when it comes right down to it |
15:37 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Sounds like time for "Next question"! |
15:37 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
i would say rights are in the hands of the owners of this virtual game not the players |
15:38 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
good idea, Carl. anyone with a question? |
15:38 |
Meora (menchor) |
they have already found out that what is in the TOS may not stand up in court |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
CAT system? |
15:39 |
Phrynne |
Are any holiday festivities-- of any sort, for any holiday -- planned for Oxbridge? |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
not unless Jorge is in the room. |
15:39 |
Meora (menchor) |
CAT has one line running currentlu |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Jorge, as to the CAT system. |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
every year we have skating, with free skates, cocoa and some gisfies. |
15:40 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
nice |
15:40 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Oooh |
15:40 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the latests news about the CAT is in the Gazette, so far in know, from 15th October |
15:40 |
Martini Discovolante |
gifties. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We should do a winter fundraising party/auction this year. |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
we should indeed. |
15:41 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me think about it. I may be able to organize. Not promising yet. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It would help. |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
i will look into securing the village green so we areno plagued by av limits, adn do not interfere with classes. |
15:42 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
btw, i still have this Advent Calendar, which gives out a gift each day, we could place it somewhere at Oxbridge, but it would require to fill it with 24 gifts first. |
15:42 |
Martini Discovolante |
i can contribute somethign, Ravelli! |
15:42 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
excellent :-) |
15:43 |
Martini Discovolante |
everyoen love plywood boxes? right? |
15:43 |

15:45 |

Please click the door with the number of the current day! (PST) |
15:45 |

ehm, this is not the final version |
15:45 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
Wow!! funn |
15:46 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
Perhaps on the Village green, rather than here on campus ... since we are a homestead. |
15:47 |
Tali Rosca |
It could be fun to do a winter event. We would have to find a good time and date, though. The Christmas period is often not the best for dragging people into SL. |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And yet, for some it's a place to come. |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Mid to late January |
15:47 |
Larkylouz |
Heh. try the afternoon of Christmas day! |
15:47 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
or a new years ball |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
When people are recovered from the holidays |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. There are long running New Years Celebrations in Caledon we don't want to step on, I think. |
15:48 |
Larkylouz |
Perhaps a virtual drunk tank??? |
15:48 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
Boxing day? |
15:48 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
and why does the new year ball need to be just one day |
15:48 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |

15:48 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
why cant we have it all week long |

virtual drunk tank? |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
Generally, you want to have things fairly condensed, so people actually meet. |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't remember. I don't think it was at christmas |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Let me search my notecards |
15:49 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |

15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have some sad news. There is a store closing sale going on in Oxbridge Village. It may be wrapping up tonight. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
12.31.09 the last time we did it. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. I'm wrong |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
I remember that the several-days-long harvest festival had designated "boardwalk promenade" times, which worked well to create some bustle. |
15:50 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That was the notecard date |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Auction & Ball was on January 1st, 2019 |
15:51 |

15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which store, Miss Gronk? |
15:51 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
aww |
15:52 |
Gronk Seriman |
Quote from the notecard..."Long story short, even with Stage 4 cancer, I'm not going to give up the fight -- but for several reasons, I've decided to close Montagne Noire's main store in Caledon Oxbridge Village on Nov. 2." |
15:53 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
omg |
15:53 |
Anaïs (jujue) |
@ Montagne Noire many really nice items, super discounted |
15:53 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
ill go shop 4 sure |
15:53 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Oh dear |
15:54 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
wish i could buy a store from another person .. that would take time have time to educate me how to run a store here |
15:54 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
would be great for us newbies |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am beginning to fear that there is something carcinogenic in the air in Caledon |
15:54 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
Ill say a prayer for them |
15:55 |
|
Anaïs (jujue) bows head and holds breath |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If there is, Carl, it is likely the age of typists. |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Probably so. |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
SL is getting old enough that we see real life catching up to its residents. |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The trouble with buying a store is that you have to keep creating content or people will stop coming. So buying an on going business only works if you can keep innovating in that area by yourself. |
15:56 |
Red Quixote |
it caught up to some of us *before* we arrived in SL |
15:56 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
None of us gets any younger. |
15:56 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
k |
15:57 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
ty for the info |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
...and if you can keep creating and marketing... well, you have your own store :-) |
15:57 |
V (vachon.myrtle) |
My Uncle, a long time SL'er passed in 2011. Lost a dubliner, Robert, last month |
15:57 |
Gronk Seriman |
After Q&A, ask me for the full notecard if you like. |
15:57 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
its not like u can make the order for the items u want here |
15:57 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
u must make the items 2 sell |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
Any last question? |
15:58 |
Firefly (blazzzzz) |
alpha for my shoes |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Is the notecard with Ebbe's casual Q&A at Oxbridge free for public distribution? |
