Martini Discovolante |
afternoon, everyone! |
14:58 |
Tali Rosca |
Seems to be a quiet day today. |
15:00 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
No crowds to speak of today |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, let's set to it. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Welcome to this week's QA. Most of you probably know the intro, but here goes: |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
This is a somewhat free-form questions-and-answers session, where we - the deans of Oxbridge - will do our best to answer questions about Oxbridge, Caledon and SL in general. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Our areas of expertise are listed here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
So with that customary introduction done, who has a question? |
15:01 |
Meora (menchor) |
the sky is falling LL changed the login screen on the LL client |
15:02 |
Meora (menchor) |
lol |
15:02 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They do that every year or so |
15:02 |
Martini Discovolante |
again? |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Has that gone live? I checked for updates recently, but didn't get any. |
15:02 |
Meora (menchor) |
login is at the top in big type |
15:03 |
Martini Discovolante |
it was the same last i upated... |
15:03 |
Meora (menchor) |
it insisted on downloading yesterday |
15:03 |
Larkylouz |
I think it is designed by Border Collies. Bossy as hell. |
15:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Is that a beta version? |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
There was some screwiness about giving high priority to the grid selection; something most newcomers probably have no idea about what is. |
15:03 |
Meora (menchor) |
let me look |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
-I saw some screenshots a while back. |
15:05 |
Meora (menchor) |
its not a bets but its dated October 2 |
15:05 |
Meora (menchor) |
beta |
15:05 |
Meora (menchor) |
lets you login at favorite places |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk You likely have auto update on then. |
15:06 |
Meora (menchor) |
yes I do |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
The auto update seems to be spread out over quite a long time. |
15:06 |
Meora (menchor) |
since I usually use Firestorm |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Since it didn't force me to update today, which it would normally try to do when I'm just barely making a class or meeting. |
15:07 |
Meora (menchor) |
I gotr 3 updates in a row and they all insisted on closing Firestorm |
15:07 |
|
Martini Discovolante dusts herself off and climbs back up the pumpkin. |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
The login screen is apparently from 3.7.17.294762, September 26 |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
And we're up to 3.7.17.294943, October 01 |
15:08 |
Martini Discovolante |
I thought it was awhile ago. |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
My LL viewer is still on 3.7.16, and has not triggered an auto-update yet. |
15:09 |
Meora (menchor) |
294959 |
15:09 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Last time the official viewer updated for me, it did not let me use estate powers. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So is mine (3.7.16), but I have auto-update turned off. |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
Oh, yeah, 3.7.17.294959. October 02, 2014 |
15:11 |
Meora (menchor) |
some of the more recent updates have broken a few things |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
I am not entirely sure which they consider the "release" viewer after then changed the release rhythm. I suspect they have not updated the Wiki categories accordingly. |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ha! Even THEY can't keep up! |
15:12 |
Meora (menchor) |
does that surprise you? |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
Not in the slightest. |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Has the change stirred up discussion in any of the forums? |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
I haven't followed the forum, but the blogosphere in general just noted that the change was upcoming, and moved on. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
It really isn't a big deal. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It shouldn't be, but that's no guarantee that it goes down without a fuss. |
15:15 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Nothing goes down without some level of fuss in the forums. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Aye. 'Tis true. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questions or news? |
15:17 |
Meora (menchor) |
slow day |
15:17 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have news. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Miss Gronk? |
15:17 |
Gronk Seriman |
I recently came across news of yet another virtual world shutting down. Sony's Playstation Home will not be ported from Playstation 3 to 4. In fact it will be shut down in about a year. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
Not exactly a big blow to the genre. |
15:18 |
Meora (menchor) |
ya know with all our complaints about SL they seem to have done some things right |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
End of a platform. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Another hyped "SL-Killer" bites the dust. |
15:18 |
Gronk Seriman |
I remembered hearing about it, but lacking a Playstation, I didn't care. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
Having a Playstation and having checked it, I didn't care. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Remember when Google Lively was going to make SL irrelevant, too. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
And Blue Mars and Cloud Party. |
15:20 |
B~F AeroSteam Co. Steam Jet Pack v1 |
All Go |
15:20 |
Meora (menchor) |
Blue Mars made some mistakes like needing a high end machine to run |
15:21 |
Gronk Seriman |
I was rooting for Cloud Party. It was fun in its infancy. Never got a chance to grow up. |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
Both had the potential, but made some mistakes. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Creating things for Blue Mars and getting them up was also a rather involved process. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
Blue Mars' mistake was, indeed, to dismiss "hobby" creators and require you to make a full business of a "City" to be a creator. |
15:22 |
Meora (menchor) |
also Blue Mars didn't allow flying and took forever to download and every time an area changed it had to be downloaded |
15:23 |
Martini Discovolante |
i left the Blue Mars when it took 2 of the creators on our team to make a wearable top hat. |
15:24 |
Martini Discovolante |
Miss jones, could you turn off the flying apparatus? |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Blue Mars fate was sealed when people realized that its natural abbreviation was "BM" |
15:25 |
Martini Discovolante |
oh the first time they heard of it? |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In any case, SL has managed to keep going and evolve a bit. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
Home had a niche, but it was never really as a "virtual world". |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
no typing fo me---it appears i am going to crash |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
again. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Awwww. |
15:27 |
Gronk Seriman |
Gah! |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
ooooh.. i was just informed that we had an IP address conflict. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
So I don't see it shutting down as any kind of sign for that genre. |
15:28 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Any questions? |
15:29 |
Gronk Seriman |
The article I read described Home as "trolls trolling trolls". |
15:29 |
Red Quixote |
trolls goota troll too |
15:29 |
Red Quixote |
*gotta |
15:30 |
|
Martini Discovolante points at the floor----free punkins. getcher free punkins. |
15:30 |
Meora (menchor) |
what is or was Home? |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
It was a sort of chat lounge with avatars. |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
I think the idea was to tap into a sort of arcade feel where people met over the games and chatted. |
15:34 |
Tali Rosca |
Content was provided by Sony, and possibly by various publishers as promotions for certain games. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Once again, user generated content makes the difference. |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
It was never really the point with Home, hence me not really considering a part of the "virtual world" genre. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Very much so (user generated content). |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions or topics? |
15:38 |
Meora (menchor) |
any idea whether the SL 2.0 will have adult content? |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
HEre we go again.... |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
It has never really crossed my mind that it *wouldn't*. I have seen no mention either way, but I'd say it's safe to assume it'll end up working much the same way as currently. |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
huge money maker. of course it will. |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
But there really isn't much actual information about SL2. |
15:40 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think that Ebbe Altberg addressed that in a comment. I can look. |
15:41 |
Gronk Seriman |
I can't find any news about SL2. It's like they announced it, then ran back in the house and slamed the door. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, still in the technical design stages. |
15:42 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Here is what Ebbe said on the SL forums on the subject of adult content in SL2, "I’m for freedom. I don’t want to moderate or control it (beyond making sure things are legal). And we’ll probably have ratings (G, M, A) or something like that so one can be “safe” if one does not want some kind of content…again, we’re creating something in the spirit of SL, but just want to make it much better…" |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
I think the best guess we can make currently is "like SL, but with better technology". LL want it to replace SL as completely and painlessly as possible. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
I think the best guess we can make currently is "like SL, but with better technology". LL want it to replace SL as completely and painlessly as possible. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Likely both learning from and moving on from SL's basic architecture and also using the improvements in storage and technology developed in the meantime. |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
The way I see it, it will make sense for LL to entice pretty much the entire user base to a new platform with some added options and capabilities (for other use as well), rather than having to maintain two products. So it is in their interest to make it as attractive as possible to the existing SL residents. |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
But again, we're really just guessing. |
15:49 |
Gronk Seriman |
It would be insane for them to not let you take all your "stuff" from SL to SL2. |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
It is highly unlikely that you'll be able to take *all*. |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
A lot of content is closely tied to the existing avatar, and that in particular is an outdated pain point. |
15:50 |
Meora (menchor) |
if they fix the avatar the system clothes will be busted |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
True. |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I could envision that two major changes would come in avatar "architecture" and sim architecture (in the technical sense). |
15:51 |
|
Meora (menchor) says me wearing slink hands and feet and a mesh dress |
15:51 |
Tali Rosca |
That said, if they entice over a lot of existing content creators, they will be able to quickly adapt upload their best, most modern items. |
15:52 |
Tali Rosca |
A lot of accessories and footwear will require little but an upload from the existing mesh source. |
15:53 |
|
Larkylouz wraps her arms protectively around her collection of *RED* prim hair. |
15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
Anything digital is convertible. If the Lindens don't provide the tools, somebody will. I hope. |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
The flexi system may be hard to reproduce, though. |
15:56 |
|
Gronk Seriman smirks |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, perhaps they will include some legacy feature such as hair that repositions on the body with teleporting. |
15:56 |
Meora (menchor) |
also depends on what a minimum machine is to run it |
15:56 |
Tali Rosca |
And if you do a straight conversion of prim models... well, I hope they have a good system for measuring impact, because it will be *hugely* inefficient. |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At one time there was talk of true cloth simulation. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
That would really work wonders for hair. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
But it is also computationally expensive. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have to run. Goodnight everyone. |
15:59 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
If I may interject a side note apologize. Sorry about earlier everyone. I was flying over the water with the Sunday flight and was dumped from sl. I was trying to go back with my re-log and had to leave the computer before the login was complete. I ended up here apparently with my emergency jetpak ( in case my airship poofed) on. So sorry for the inconvenience to the meeting. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Night, Carl. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
The hour is up soon. Any last questions? |
15:59 |
Martini Discovolante |
:) understandable, Andreajonesms |
16:00 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
I didn't want anyone thinking it was on purpose. We do get that sometimes. |
16:00 |
Martini Discovolante |
:3 |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At the worst, had ye not returned, we might have dumped you into the ocean without prejudice. |
16:01 |
Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) |
Dog fight had to be settled. |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Let us adjourn for today. |
16:01 |
Martini Discovolante |
thanks everyone |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all for coming and participating. |
