Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2014-09-07
15:01 | Tali Rosca | Welcome to this week's QA session. This is a somewhat free-form questions-and-answers, where we - the deans of Oxbridge - will attempt to answer questions with some relevance to Oxbridge, Caledon or Second Life in general. |
15:02 | Tali Rosca | As some of you may know, we each have an area of expertise, as you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:03 | Tali Rosca | So, with that introduction done, let us set to it. Who has a question? |
15:03 | Carl Metropolitan | No questions? Well, that was a short session. See you guys later. |
15:03 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand.
15:03 | Tali Rosca | Yes? |
15:04 | Gronk Seriman | Has there been any advancements in the TOS kerfuffle? |
15:05 | Tali Rosca | None whatsoever. I think everybody resigned to it once LL did their jubilant "we listened and changed things", and just facepalmed. |
15:05 | Gronk Seriman | Gah! |
15:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Welcome, Dean Martini. |
15:06 | Carl Metropolitan | The new version of the ToS has the virtue of being confusing enough that if it ever went to court it would likely be thrown out for vagueness :) |
15:06 | Tali Rosca | There were some attempts at bringing it up after the "revision", but LL completely stonewalled any mention of it. |
15:08 | RafaelWinter | thank you |
15:08 | Tali Rosca | So the signal seemed to be fairly clear: This is it. |
15:08 | Very old leather fireside chair DINKIE, WITH PILLOW whispers | (⇞PgUp or ⇟ PgDn ) change your pose. Touch for menu. |
15:08 | agustof | HOLA QUE TAL |
15:09 | Carl Metropolitan | Hi Agustof |
15:09 | Gronk Seriman | How about the outreach from the inworld schools to LL? Any news there? |
15:09 | Martini Discovolante | Tuvimos una segunda meetign con ellos. |
15:09 | Steadman Kondor | greetings all :) |
15:10 | Martini Discovolante | We had a second meetign with them. |
15:10 | Martini Discovolante | and will continue to meet quarterly. |
15:10 | Martini Discovolante | y seguirá reuniéndose trimestralmente. |
15:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Greetings, Dean Steadman. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | That second meeting was some weeks ago, right? |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | Yes. |
15:11 | Martini Discovolante | yes.. and we talked about it the following sunday. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | About a month back now |
15:11 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Carl, has anyone written up the second meeting? I recall writeups of the first, but no details on the second. |
15:11 | Carl Metropolitan | I never wrote it up because my power went out just before it started and didn't come back until after it was over. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | I think someone wrote a summary. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | But I don't have it. |
15:12 | Carl Metropolitan | I've also been extremely busy in RL over the last month. |
15:12 | Martini Discovolante nods.
15:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | kk Thanks. |
15:12 | Martini Discovolante | we shall see waht coems of it. |
15:14 | Martini Discovolante | i am not sure it has ever happened before, but shortly after, i was told that one if my classes was on the sign in page |
15:14 | Tali Rosca | What are the expectations? Simply to have a little information flow back and forth to help each in their work, or any formal arrangements and promotions? |
15:14 | Martini Discovolante | not sure edu events had been featured there before. |
15:14 | agustof | SO SORRY L AM ABLO LATINO CHILEAN ENGLISH |
15:15 | Martini Discovolante | agusto--- would you like to go to a place that speaks spanish? |
15:15 | Martini Discovolante | agusto --- le gustaría ir a un lugar que habla español? |
15:15 | agustof | OK |
15:15 | Martini Discovolante | agusto, please click here:: Joywind Korea (176,191,23) |
15:15 | Martini Discovolante | agusto, por favor haga clic aquí :: Joywind Korea (176,191,23) |
15:16 | Tali Rosca | I still find it highly bizarre that the Spanish help area is named Korea. |
15:17 | Red Quixote | LL logic? |
15:17 | Martini Discovolante | well, better than a used Adult sim, liek Brasil. |
15:17 | Tali Rosca | Well, it's not LL's choice. |
15:17 | Martini Discovolante | it costs money to rename a region. |
15:18 | Larkylouz | I doubt LL had much to do with that. The former Spanish sim was never renamed either. It showed up as "Inside Me" |
15:18 | Carl Metropolitan | I think it is 50USD to do a rename |
15:18 | Martini Discovolante | that is Brasil. |
15:18 | Tali Rosca | Inside Me is still active, as far as I recall. |
15:18 | Larkylouz | Did I misspeak? Oops. Sorry |
15:19 | Tali Rosca | A name change isn't included in the ownership transfer fee? |
15:19 | Tali Rosca | That's kinda bleeding people. |
15:19 | Steadman Kondor | yes, subsequent ones will cost |
15:19 | Martini Discovolante | no, maam |
15:20 | Martini Discovolante | well considering al the loose sims they have rattling around, you think they could offer up somehtign more appropiate. |
15:20 | Martini Discovolante | but if the regions was donated , or whatever, i can see not wanting to pay for it. |
15:20 | Tali Rosca | Not that 50$ is a lot compared to the price of the sim, but it does seem a little... opportunistic. |
15:21 | Gronk Seriman | The probably never coded for changing names, and some poor sap has to do it manually. |
15:21 | Martini Discovolante | i think it a bit more of a ding than that. |
15:21 | Carl Metropolitan | That makes sense. The original SL was not coded for sims owned by anyone other than LL |
15:22 | Martini Discovolante | part of our discussions as a group was that the help places all run on a shoestring, and every silly cost like that make a huge difference. |
15:22 | Gronk Seriman | No doubt! |
15:23 | Tali Rosca | Other questions? |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | Yes? It seems you have the floor. |
15:27 | Gronk Seriman raises a hand if nobody else will
15:27 | Gronk Seriman | The Caledon Quest starts in the Hall of Caledon. Is there any way to start it at any of the advertizing signs in Oxbridge? |
15:27 | Martini Discovolante | ?? |
15:28 | Gronk Seriman | I have led sooo many people into the Hall to find the start. |
15:28 | Steadman Kondor | when they arrive they starting in landing point |
15:28 | Martini Discovolante | most references ot the Quest have a SLURl that lands yo in the Hall. |
15:29 | Martini Discovolante | it is it's own parcel . |
15:29 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, The hall has it's own landing point, I believe, so they can TP to the start. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | Are people having trouble finding the hall of Caledon? |
15:29 | Martini Discovolante | if people get here otherwise, they must be using the map. |
15:29 | Carl Metropolitan | And the quest? |
15:29 | Gronk Seriman | I know I found it when I did it. But so many people se the signs and wonder where it starts. |
15:29 | Martini Discovolante | i can put in more "to the Quest signs. |
15:29 | Tali Rosca | Still, if people have trouble doing that, it may make sense to add the quest log giver to the posters? |
15:30 | Martini Discovolante | or just have them give the LM to the hall of caledon. |
15:30 | Larkylouz | I do show people where to start on a regular basis, but I think many more show up in the HofC. There is regular traffic through there. |
15:30 | Martini Discovolante | we cannot have several waypoints here |
15:31 | Gronk Seriman | Scripting restrictions? Prim restrictions? |
15:31 | Martini Discovolante | no-- |
15:32 | Martini Discovolante | A)dean Q would have to do it. and B) the goal is to get people to learn more about Caleodn. |
15:32 | Carl Metropolitan | Steadman--you are being attacked by a small cat. Beware, they can do 1d4 hit points damage! |
15:32 | Martini Discovolante | hence it's origin in the Hall. |
15:33 | Calico Jones (brendastarr72) hisses at the Metropolitan avatar
15:33 | Tali Rosca | It does make sense to have the Hall as the kickoff point. It lends a certain official feel to it. |
15:34 | Gronk Seriman | I should have reaearched this before bringing it up. The posters have a LM imbedded? |
15:34 | Red Quixote | if they can't find the starting point,. they must not be very good hunters |
15:34 | Martini Discovolante | itis part of our goal to help promote Caledon in general. |
15:34 | Gronk Seriman | True Red! *smiles* |
15:34 | Tali Rosca | I was thinking along those lines; that it would likely only be the first problem of a *very* difficult hunt. |
15:34 | Martini Discovolante | i do nto remember. but that is simple enough. |
15:34 | Red Quixote | lol.. doomed from the start |
15:35 | Martini Discovolante | even a kitten could do it. |
15:35 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Doomed at the Linden Tree at least :-) |
15:35 | Red Quixote | shall we hand out kittens too? |
15:35 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | Tracking kittnes? |
15:35 | Tali Rosca | The infamous Linden tree. |
15:35 | Tali Rosca | (Also, somebody has to say it: It is dangerous to go alone. Take this.) |
15:38 | Carl Metropolitan | The Linden tree hint is confusing. Many people think it means a Linden Labs library tree rather than a Linden Tree |
15:39 | Tali Rosca | Capitalization may be confusing? |
15:39 | Martini Discovolante | or they do not knwo how to see the names of things at all. |
15:39 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Some do not seem to know there is a RL linden tree... |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A Library tree of LL, a tree that give $L's, or a tree of the biological designation "Linden Tree". |
15:40 | Carl Metropolitan | No. That there is such a thing as a tree called a "Linden Tree" |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A overloaded designator. |
15:40 | Martini Discovolante | we have no control ove rthe nuts and bolts of the Quest.... it is all managed by Dean Questi. |
15:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linden |
15:41 | Gronk Seriman | I hope he is doing well. Have not seen him at all, lately. |
15:41 | Martini Discovolante | i have a pair of American Linden trees in my RL front yard. |
15:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | "Several of the common names for species within the Tilia genus have Linden in their names." |
15:42 | Martini Discovolante | they are having a banner year dropping seeds. |
15:42 | Tali Rosca | Is there a linden Linden tree? |
15:42 | Larkylouz tries to remember if it was Dean Questi she ran into just the other day. It had been a long time.
15:42 | Martini Discovolante | he was here just the other day, and still has a house in Kitti . |
15:42 | Gronk Seriman | Ah. Good. |
15:43 | Tali Rosca | And by the way, the quest posters give you a notecard which includes a description and landmark. |
15:43 | Tali Rosca | That seems to be about as good as it gets. |
15:44 | Martini Discovolante | oh--well --there you have it. |
15:44 | Martini Discovolante | i assumed i had simply been negligent. |
15:45 | Carl Metropolitan | I have to leave early today. Goodbye everyone. |
15:45 | Larkylouz | TC Carl |
15:45 | Red Quixote | see ya Carl |
15:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | tc, Carl. Journey well. |
15:45 | Gronk Seriman | Goodnight, Carl! |
15:45 | Meora (menchor) | goodbye |
15:45 | Martini Discovolante | nighters, Carl! |
15:46 | Tali Rosca | So, next topic? |
15:46 | Tali Rosca | Gronk? |
15:46 | Gronk Seriman | I'mall out. |
15:47 | Gronk Seriman pouts
15:47 | Meora (menchor) | are the newbies still using the library mesh avatars? |
15:47 | Red Quixote | almost exclusively |
15:47 | Steadman Kondor | i dont they they have an 'out' unless they learn how to use others in the library or purchased avatars |
15:48 | Tali Rosca | Whether they *keep* using them is another matter, but it's certainly what they show up in here. |
15:48 | Martini Discovolante | ther eis a choise of the classic avatars on signup, but it is not readily apparent. |
15:48 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Mesh avatars do seem to most common but there are newcomers who use the "classic" ones as well. |
15:48 | Tali Rosca | The avatar selection box *does* have a "Classic" tab, so they are there. |
15:49 | Steadman Kondor | ah good |
15:49 | Gronk Seriman | The mesh avatars are the first group they are presented. You need to skip to the next groups to see the Classic avatars. |
15:49 | Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) | The Avatars window offers "People", "Vampires" and "Classics". And I see a smattering of vampires, so some notice the choice. |
15:49 | Martini Discovolante | the sign up page does not rotate the selection type.... you have to notice the buttons, and use them. |
15:49 | Larkylouz | I think the new materials that are available (the revamped orientation and possibly the Gazette article I refer folks to) are helping. I am not seeing as many folks with screwed up avatars as I was. |
15:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Without any motivation on why you want to do that, it's not particularly likely. |
15:50 | Steadman Kondor | i ended up with a classic one in aditi when i wanted to change from a tiny to a normal. it was very easy to find in firestorm |
15:50 | Steadman Kondor | ah well done miss larky :) the power of the published word |
15:50 | Martini Discovolante | the problem is usually that they try to weaar bits of both, or remove the invisible avatar, and wind up with SLeprosy |
15:51 | Meora (menchor) | and they are going to be disappointed if they want to upgrade their mesh avatar since the for sale ones are just coming out |
15:51 | Tali Rosca | The whole avatar outfitting mechanism is incredibly obscure unless you've been with us for the better part of a decade. |
15:52 | Gronk Seriman | ...and aren't wearing a mesh avatar. |
15:53 | Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) still can't find mesh shoes.
15:53 | Martini Discovolante | have you tried Hoof-boots, Ivan? |
15:53 | Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) | Neigh |
15:53 | Martini Discovolante | they are quite sporty |
15:54 | Martini Discovolante wonders if ther ARE any in Sl :)
15:54 | Martini Discovolante | sporty, and cut down on the farrier visits |
15:56 | Tali Rosca | Any last questions before we're out of time? |
15:56 | Gronk Seriman | It's sad. I've almost given up using the Marketplace's Search. I look for the item in Google, and "second life" to the search and look at the images. Bingo! |
15:57 | Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) | It has been glitching of late |
15:57 | Tali Rosca | "of late" is a charitable way to put it. |
15:57 | Gronk Seriman | Really! |
15:58 | Tali Rosca | Remember that you can add "site:" to a search to restrict it only to that site. |
15:58 | Martini Discovolante sends Ivan a peppermint.
15:58 | Tali Rosca | That's even more accurate than just adding "Second Life" to the search criteria. |
15:59 | Gronk Seriman | But if you add "sl" to the search terms, you'll find blog pictures, too. |
15:59 | Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) thanks deans and poofs.
16:00 | Tali Rosca | Let's say that's it for now. The hour is up. |
16:00 | Gronk Seriman | "That's it for now. The hour is up." |
16:00 | Larkylouz | diddo |
16:00 | Larkylouz | ditto |
16:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thank you all for coming and participating. |
16:00 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | BEdtime for me. |
16:00 | Red Quixote | there's an echo in here |
16:00 | Gronk Seriman smirks
16:00 | Larkylouz | <rolls eyes> |
16:00 | Steadman Kondor | good night all :) |
16:00 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Be seeing you |
16:00 | Larkylouz | Thank you Deans and all |
16:01 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 | Meora (menchor) | thank you deans |
