15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Welcome to this week's QA with the Deans. It seems we mostly have regulars tonight, so you know the drill: |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
This is a freeform questions-and-answer session where we, the deans, try to answer questions to the best of our ability. The topic is generally free, as long as it relates to SL in general and Oxbridge in particular. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
You can see our roles and responsibilities here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
So who has the first question? |
15:03 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Is there any plan for the train to Oxbridge to run more than once an hour? |
15:04 |
Martini Discovolante |
it runs when it runs. |
15:04 |
Josain Zsun |
Only if the price of virtual coal decreases. |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
While I don't speak with any authority about the trains, I am fairly sure there are no plans to change those. |
15:04 |
Martini Discovolante |
adn hourly would be a bit too regular for it. |
15:04 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Ah! very good. |
15:04 |
|
Dhughan Froobert makes note to invest in virtual coal while prices are low |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
As long as it stays on the *tracks* we're lucky, let alone the schedule. |
15:05 |
Martini Discovolante |
it used ot pull into the station, and right out again into teh quad or the sea. |
15:05 |
Gronk Seriman |
Aww! Everybody likes train wreks! |
15:05 |
Martini Discovolante |
exciting times, those. |
15:05 |
Dhughan Froobert |
It seems to go by my place fairly consistently about 0:55 and 0:59, occasionally drops cars at random. |
15:05 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
No trains climbing up to the sky any more, one hopes. |
15:06 |
Dhughan Froobert |
It makes scheduling Maiden Chaining events fairly consistent, anyway. |
15:06 |
|
Josain Zsun imagines chaining a maiden… |
15:06 |
Steadman Kondor |
greeting all |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
wasn't she in Hello Dolly? |
15:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
Greetings, Dean K! |
15:07 |
Tali Rosca |
To be honest, I don't know how the schedule works. I *think* it rezzes at one end, and then simply moves along with a timer, so it should be fairly consistent, modulo time dilation in the sims it moves through. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Greetings. Glad you could make it. |
15:07 |
Tali Rosca |
(Rezzes on a specific time, that is) |
15:07 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes i walked in on maiden chaining.... *glances at mr josain*... |
15:08 |
|
Josain Zsun ducks |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Had to do with the trains.... Classic villany |
15:08 |
|
Dhughan Froobert clears his throat and thinks of simple "you must pay the tier!" threatening of maidens |
15:08 |
|
Gronk Seriman psst. Use rope. The wheels cut rope. The train may derail running over chain. |
15:09 |
|
Dhughan Froobert makes note "Rope less disruptive of rail schedules, check" |
15:10 |
Red Quixote |
thinner maidens might also be a wise course of action |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I suppose that depends on the gauge of the train. |
15:11 |
Martini Discovolante |
well ALL BOW! |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:12 |
Red Quixote |
heheh |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
I was floored for a moment. |
15:12 |
Martini Discovolante |
and if you will nto bow, you get the FLOOR> |
15:12 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Indeed. |
15:12 |
|
Meora (menchor) giggle |
15:12 |
|
Gronk Seriman smirks |
15:12 |
|
Dhughan Froobert rises and nods respectfully |
15:13 |
Martini Discovolante |
Welcoem , Your Glory! |
15:13 |
|
Dhughan Froobert notes even the floor rises in the presence. ;) |
15:13 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Holy crap, Martini's taller than 40cm. |
15:13 |
|
Kamilah Hauptmann is just here to take up valuable sim capacity and provide nothing of value. |
15:14 |
Martini Discovolante |
yay.! |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
We have both capacity and time to spare tonight, it seems. Any questions? |
15:14 |
Gronk Seriman |
Martini is only human. Sometimes. |
15:16 |
Gronk Seriman |
May I suggest a Wheel of Topics you can spin during lulls. It will have evergreen topics. Like SL's TOS, COU's budget...etc. |
15:16 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) buys off all the vowels |
15:16 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
I was thinkking of a Can Can line fo rthe Deans up there. :) |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I did encounter a RL construction worthy of SL http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/06/travel/dragon-bridge-da-nang/ |
15:17 |
Martini Discovolante |
lol, Mr EB. i thot Finnish had all the vowells already! |
15:18 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yeah, the Polish sold most of them cheaply :-) |
15:18 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Also extra umlauts. |
15:19 |
Martini Discovolante |
i have i nice pair of fur Umlats, very nice in the cold. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
I get the feeling it is a slow night tonight. |
15:19 |
Gronk Seriman |
I thought that's what you're doing when you stroke a Ferengie's ears. |
15:20 |
Martini Discovolante |
it is. |
15:20 |
Red Quixote |
what do you guys do for an encore? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In conversations earlier this week, Dean Kondor noted he'd been talking with Prof Kidd, who is nearing being ready to teach an avatar appearance class. |
15:21 |
Dhughan Froobert |
I recall some time back there were occasional guided tours or field trips to places of note in Caledon. Any plans to offer those again? |
15:21 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes i've been touching base with Prof Kid the last couple of months... |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
I remember the field trips, but I can't remember who ran those? |
15:21 |
Steadman Kondor |
I'm interested to know of any other class developments to report for the gazette too |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That was Aevalle. |
15:22 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Ah, I hope it will cover dealing with the new default avatars for new users. |
15:22 |
Josain Zsun |
and their ill fitting clothes. |
15:22 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Just list what they _cannot_ be used for... |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That could be a long list. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Photo Salon recently had a field trip. |
15:23 |
Gronk Seriman |
The Quest is a sort of a substitute for field trips. A guided frustrationg tour through |
15:23 |
Gronk Seriman |
Caledon |
15:24 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Ah, true, must check out The Quest sometime. |
15:24 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) has heard rather many puzzled questions about the Linden Tree |
15:24 |
Steadman Kondor |
which linden tree ? |
15:24 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Exactly. |
15:24 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
I think the Quest had a clue related to something I subsequently removed. Good luck with that one. |
15:24 |
Steadman Kondor |
the miff-tical linden tree? |
15:25 |
Martini Discovolante |
the confusion comes from lindne plants vs a virtual tree of teh Linden species. |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Yeah |
15:25 |
Josain Zsun |
Did someone say Money Tree? |
15:25 |
Tali Rosca |
I have heard some problems in Lionsgate as well, yes, but I am not sure exactly why. |
15:25 |
Martini Discovolante |
we moved it, i think, Kami. |
15:25 |
Josain Zsun |
I remember them disappearing when I arrived. |
15:26 |
Martini Discovolante |
Lionsgate is a shinyshiny trap. |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
And yes, the Linden tree seems to be a perennial problem, pun sort of intended. |
15:26 |
|
Kamilah Hauptmann still detects something belonging to Carl i nLionsgate, no clue what or where it is, though. |
15:26 |
Steadman Kondor |
it doesn't contravene any ToS or caledon covenant to have a money tree in caledon i suppose |
15:27 |
Josain Zsun |
I still have many Linden Trees in inventory from my Isla Sonoita years. |
15:27 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Any word on the Caledon Airships? I believe progress is ongoing.... |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
We had a fairly thorough report last week, |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We had a good discussion on that last week. Several lines are running. Mr. Serapis is temporarily not building, awaiting a new laptop. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The transcript is at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna/qna_20140817.php |
15:29 |
Meora (menchor) |
the line that goes to Oxbridge was crashing before it got here |
15:29 |
Steadman Kondor |
miss phyrnne interviewed mr serapis recently for the next issue of the oxbridge gazette |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
The transcript is here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna/qna_20140817.php |
15:29 |
Steadman Kondor |
we hope to publish it next edition, in the meantime, i'm very happy to hear about any exciting advetures (with snaps) you have had on the CAT :) |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
Wordsmith is ninja'ing me tonight! |
15:30 |
Dhughan Froobert |
excellent, thank you for the transcript. I'm on that same line so having it working again would be nice. |
15:31 |
Martini Discovolante |
oh i have a small announcement... |
15:31 |
Gronk Seriman |
But you're not small at the moment.... |
15:31 |
Martini Discovolante |
ther is a sign up near our schedule, with URLS ot the scheduels of tother schools in the Help Education Quorum. |
15:32 |
Gronk Seriman |
Oooo! Nice! |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Helpful. |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
so folks who cannot make these classes might find somethign else they can attends |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
and i sent a FL opy to the other members. |
15:33 |
Martini Discovolante |
soz -- FP --full perm copy* |
15:33 |
Steadman Kondor |
i'm having a flashback to the VWBPE where one of the key speakers said that collaboration between the different schools is vital for progress |
15:33 |
Gronk Seriman |
Safety in Numbers. Link to the other schools. Great! |
15:33 |
|
Josain Zsun agrees |
15:33 |
Steadman Kondor |
that's wonderful, dean martini :) |
15:34 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are linking to schedule Urls only, no no students get accidnetly tp'd away from the sim they are on :) |
15:34 |
Martini Discovolante |
so no* |
15:35 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Thank you! Glad to see the link to other educational sites. |
15:35 |
Gronk Seriman |
Will their credits transfer here? *smiles* |
15:36 |
Meora (menchor) |
only if you are a Scholar |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They might well satisfy a prerequisite. |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
we need some kind of intervarsity quiddith |
15:38 |
Martini Discovolante |
oh and we had a visit from Miss Veleeda Lorakeet the other day.. she donated a cute FP Pinocchio avatar to the baggage claim area in the trainstation. |
15:38 |
Red Quixote |
woot Quidditch |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It might also be useful to set up one of your webpages to the HEQ |
15:38 |
Martini Discovolante |
it is scripter ot grow its nose if anyone says 'Liar!" in open chat |
15:38 |
|
Steadman Kondor grins |
15:39 |
Steadman Kondor |
all writers of fiction will be dragging their noses on the ground... |
15:39 |
Gronk Seriman |
I understand LL's unease about declaring an inworls aq school a school. They should follow RL. Recruit and appoint a board of...seven, mayby?...people to decide who is a school in SL or not. |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
adn as itis full permplease keep an eye peeled for any precocious student modifications . |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The trouble with creative minds. ;) |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The trouble with creative minds. ;) |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We are also going to try the basic photography class as a rotating two-part class. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
Isn't it effectively already that? |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
Alternating between field and class sessions? |
15:42 |
Steadman Kondor |
as in lecture one week, then feedback and analysis the next? |
15:42 |
Larkylouz |
Not the Basic class. You're thinking of the Photo Salon. |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's Photo Salon. Lecture and sharing. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
Ah, yes. |
15:43 |
Larkylouz |
And the photo salon does not repeat material on a regular basis. It is kind of potluck what any techer decides to teach, sometimes based on what students request |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
While I think of it, that does raise a question on providing an occasional European time class. |
15:45 |
Steadman Kondor |
May I suggest, what if we offer a special week or two of classes in Euro time next month, to gauge interest? |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Good idea, Steadman. I am not sure how to incorporate a class that is more than one session in that plan. |
15:45 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't think springing a Euro time on short notice will really be indicative. |
15:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Essentially what we have been doing with the Basic Photo class. |
15:45 |
Steadman Kondor |
well, in late September or in October, at least a few weeks notice, Dean Tali |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
It is my impression that people rely heavily on knowing the schedule in advance. |
15:46 |
Red Quixote |
I'm fairly flexible |
15:46 |
Steadman Kondor |
I'm happy to work with Dean Wordsmith if you like, to coordinate the prof's, classes and marketing for this |
15:46 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, if the classes are supposed to be earlier, the schedule would have to be extended before 10 AM SLT. |
15:46 |
|
Dhughan Froobert notes that Prof. Quixote would be flexible, as an animator. |
15:46 |
Red Quixote |
^^ |
15:47 |
Larkylouz |
I have found that publicizing a change several days in advance often draws a hefty audience |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In this case, we're still keeping the same time slots, but shifting to 10am or Noon. |
15:47 |
Steadman Kondor |
it is perhaps that people only plan a few days ahead. |
15:48 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Others, on the other hand, wait for class announcements |
15:48 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
"[15:47] Larkylouz: I have found that publicizing a change several days in advance often draws a hefty audience" <---- this |
15:48 |
Steadman Kondor |
so too early a notice for a one-off event, is too early. and 24 hours is too short |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
See, that's what puzzles me. What goes on here when I'm at work on weekdays (USA). |
15:49 |
Larkylouz |
Everyone wears French berets, swings red capes at bulls and eats Haggis, Gronk. |
15:49 |
Gronk Seriman |
Does somebody have traffic graphs to show that we are missing out on Eorus? |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We do plan those changes ahead, Steadman, so the schedule changes 5-6 days in advance, plus an advance notice. |
15:49 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ha! |
15:50 |
|
Larkylouz apologizes to the Europeans in the audience |
15:50 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
:-) |
15:50 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes 5-6 days is ample.. |
15:50 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Ah, I often see notices a little too soon before class. It would help to have a day or two of advance planning in group notices. |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
You forgot mentioning the wrestling of polar bears. |
15:50 |
|
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) groans |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Is that with or without sufficient ice? |
15:51 |
Red Quixote |
you don't want to miss that |
15:51 |
Steadman Kondor |
mmmm haggis... |
15:51 |
Dhughan Froobert |
What about the poor Aussies? 'Roo boxing matches? |
15:51 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, there is a joke about that "ice bucket challenge" that it is for sissies... |
15:51 |
Tali Rosca |
Would it make sense to have announcements earlier? Or would it get confusing if announcements overlapped the actual classes? |
15:52 |
Red Quixote |
glad to hear the sissies are having fun too |
15:52 |
Tali Rosca |
I am leaning towards thinking that "early announcements" are what we have the schedule for. |
15:52 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
:-) |
15:52 |
Gronk Seriman |
True. |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I've tried to get it on the schedule to coincide with the announcement (apart from mental discontinuities) |
15:53 |
Martini Discovolante |
we do put all classes in the LL events Calendar. |
15:53 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Well, I simply have to make bookmarks for the class schedules... thanks to the notecard, that's simplified. |
15:53 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Working group chat would help with announcements.. |
15:53 |
Gronk Seriman |
But a flashing neon surround to indicate a late breaking change would help. |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
:^) gronk |
15:54 |
Gronk Seriman |
For a less than seven day change |
15:55 |
|
Red Quixote wonders if they still have haggis at the polar bear wrestling matches |
15:56 |
Josain Zsun |
Incoming Carl |
15:56 |
|
Martini Discovolante waves to Carl |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Any announcements you have, Carl? |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or new pieces of writing on SL? |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. Not really. My most recent blogs have been political. I've also been really busy in RL. |
15:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Carl. |
15:58 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Oooh, politics, drop a bomb so we can have a fight break out, Carl! :D |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Crap. I came in at the end of this. Not just before the start. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm sorry. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was wondering why people were all here. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
I think we should adjourn before starting the politics. |
15:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
Heh! |
15:59 |
Josain Zsun |
We call that reservation time in AZ. |
15:59 |
Martini Discovolante |
please! |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm really sorry. I missed two in a row now. |
16:00 |
Red Quixote |
you only missed one or two fresh puns |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But, we were able to check if you had anything new to bring up, which is still helpful. |
16:00 |
Tali Rosca |
So let us say that's it for now, and go beat each other up over politics outside. |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I should set my computer to SLT :) |
16:00 |
Dhughan Froobert |
Huzzah and such. |
16:00 |
Gronk Seriman |
"That's it for now." |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Nah. I'm politic'ed out. Too much RL stress and work. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
16:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Okay. BEdtime for me. |
16:01 |
Martini Discovolante |
crack of Four. |
16:01 |
Josain Zsun |
Anyone wanting to go on a tour in an hour? |
16:01 |
Martini Discovolante |
thanks for comign everyone. |
16:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
16:01 |
Steadman Kondor |
thank you all for attending :) |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
Larkylouz |
thank you deans and all |
16:01 |
Steadman Kondor |
see you next week! |
