Tali Rosca |
Welcome to this week's installment of the questions-and-answers session. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
As usual, we - the deans of Oxbridge - will try to answer questions to the best of our abilities. We have different areas of expertise and responsibility, as described here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php, but we can also answer questions more generally about the goings-on in Oxbridge, and some topics which relate to Caledon or SL as a whole. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
So let us set straight to it. Any questions? |
15:03 |
Larkylouz |
What's your take on the future of SL, given the events of the past week. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Everyone should come to Oxbridge's SL11B Display. |
15:03 |
|
Larkylouz starts with something easy and brief. |
15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |

15:03 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That's my take :) |
15:03 |
Meora (menchor) |
Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:03 |
Red Quixote |
why is there a newspaper box in the lecture hall?? we have enough problems with classroom disruptions as it is |
15:03 |
Martini Discovolante |
i have a note caard of resources so you all may read the blogs aetc and hear the TPV meeting yourselfs, if you would like. |

Click that sign for a LM to Oxbridge at SL11B |
15:04 |
Larkylouz |
I would, Martini. Thank you for all your work, Mr. Metropolitan. And yours, Steadman. |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
Let's take one thing at a time. |
15:04 |
|
Larkylouz giggles. |
15:05 |
Steadman Kondor |
oh dear... let's home charles doesnt get too noisy today.. |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
SL11B is kicking off, and, as Carl mentioned we have a presence there. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The funny thing is that Ebbe first announced this in the Help Education Quorum meeting on Thursday and none of the thirty people in the room went public with it. He had to go to the Third Party Viewer group meeting to get people to panic :) |
15:06 |
Martini Discovolante |
right. no one was all that surprised in our group thursday |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
Is there anything more to say about SL11B in this forum? |
15:06 |
Steadman Kondor |
He wants the panic? |
15:06 |
Camden McAndrews |
That's nice news about using L$ in the new place. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. I'm being facetious |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
no-- but he had mentioned it to the educators, and no one got excited. |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
I had one educator tell me all about it; it sounded scary to me. |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
the resources to date a day or tow ago is in this box by me. |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Of course the HEQ group (Help Education Quorum) is all ancient, huge oldbies with a full 8 hit points per die. |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
buy for L$0 |
15:08 |
Camden McAndrews |
I'm in "wait and see" mode, but very optimistic and hopeful. Not at all surprised that Linden Lab would be working on the next virtual world project. |
15:08 |
Martini Discovolante |
it will take awhile for the sky to fall. |
15:08 |
Camden McAndrews |
It's a pretty big sky. :)) |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
High viscosity sky. |
15:09 |
Camden McAndrews |
LOL |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oh... Come on Martini, add my blog post. Please? |
15:09 |
Martini Discovolante |
yus, Word.. it might simply oooze all over us ;-3 |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
SL is constantly developing. The items we created 10 years ago are not really in use today. We're slowly rolling to new technologies, and the collada-based mesh is industry standard, and can easily be re-uploaded to a new world. |
15:09 |
Martini Discovolante |
oh okay! soz, i thought you gave that out. |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
So if LL manages to transfer *accounts* and *groups*, and keep the community that way, the shift in underlying technology will not be a dealbreaker. |
15:10 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, but i'm chronically insecure, Martini. You know that! |
15:10 |
Friends of Caledon Oxbridge Donation Medallion |
Jorge Serapis gave a generous donation to Friends of Caledon Oxbridge to help support classes, tutorials, & tier at Caledon's Oxbridge |
15:10 |
Meora (menchor) |
we are going to hear a lot more about this before we see anything |
15:10 |
Larkylouz |
I had understood that the new worlds LL is researching were not to be compatible with SL? |
15:10 |
Steadman Kondor |
it is closed source initially |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
The word is "backwards compatibility is not a priority". |
15:11 |
Steadman Kondor |
so it might not be immediately compatible, though it might not stay that way |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
So no, they will not re-create the crazy sculpt hacks and invisiprims and whatnot. |
15:11 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would guess that the mesh content at least would be backwards compatible. |
15:11 |
Larkylouz |
makes sense |
15:11 |
Martini Discovolante |
okay-- the updated card is now in the box-- please shred the old one and get the one wiht the new card smell! |
15:11 |
Camden McAndrews |
Yeah, that's not the same as intentionally incompatible; just not constrained by the genetic heritage of SL. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One might expect the architecture of the world to be different. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
The avatar shape will almost certainly change, too, which could impact clothes fairly heavily. |
15:12 |
Meora (menchor) |
mesh is already doing that to clothes |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Here is Desmond Shang on it from the ISC chat last night: |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
[2014/06/21 23:18] Desmond Shang: my guess is that sl 2.0 has maybe... maaaybe 10 or 20% chance of 'sticking' and being worth checking out once the hype settles. |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
I hope the avatars will gain some weight? |
15:12 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
Mesh avis depend on legacy skeletons |
15:12 |
Steadman Kondor |
data migration - which is what it is - is fiendish in RL. Having seen all the RL risks and issues with that , i think it's unlikely they take that on with all our SL inventory |
15:12 |
Martini Discovolante |
and i wager that the Mesh avs as they are now will not be around (in that form) when this breaks. |
15:13 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
(sighs) |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Do keep in mind that the next CEO (whoever he or she is) could come in 18 months from now and reverse all this too. |
15:13 |
Camden McAndrews |
I would predict that users will create a bunch of tools to migrate old stuff to the new system. That's just a hunch, though. |
15:13 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes selective tools might work better... |
15:13 |
Ivan (ivanvorkosigan) |
They would do it if it were open source |
15:14 |
Steadman Kondor |
we can trust crime the copybots to push technology ahead... |
15:14 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
There will be lots of baseless speculation in the future as well... |
15:14 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You would be amazed what can be reverse engineered by people even without open source clients. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
There are already prim-to-mesh exporters for SL. |
15:14 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes but if we can do it with tools, would LL do it all enmasse? |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
And things like the skeleton, the avatar mesh and the mesh format are well known. We don't need to reverse engineer anything for that. |
15:15 |
Camden McAndrews |
For sure. A heck of a lot of Open Simulator was reverse-engineered, instead of being based on Linden Lab code. |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
LL has made sure that they have the option. Remember the controversial ToS: "We can use your content elsewhere". |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
That wording is almost certainly there to cover this. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Which now makes a lot more sense. |
15:16 |
Camden McAndrews |
Ebbe repeated the phrase "empower the creators" several times, and specifically in response to questions about the avatars. |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
Not really. People have always expected this. The issue with the ToS is *still* that it allows LL to use it for *anything*; not just "our virtual worlds". |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ebbe needs to be careful not to forget the consumers. |
15:16 |
Camden McAndrews |
From that, I would expect the environment more like The Sims 2, where we could create a whole new mesh for a character. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
It would make a lot of sense to ditch the built-in avatar completely and let people create it from scratch. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
Possibly with some standard/reference versions. |
15:18 |
Camden McAndrews |
Yup, and I'll bet 2 L$ and a sack of virtual chocolate chip cookies that this time around, they'll get the human scale right. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
But in any case, this is *years* in the future. |
15:19 |
Camden McAndrews |
Fun to daydream about, though. :) |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Years, but likely with some beta opportunities along the way. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
My take is that it's best to continue "business as usual". If LL makes it easy to migrate from that to any new platform, it will happen, and it will be... well, easy. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
And if they don't.... it'll sink anyway. |
15:20 |
Camden McAndrews |
For the nearer future, are they any classes where the deans are thinking, "I sure wish somebody would teach a class on ___________." ? |
15:20 |
Larkylouz |
By that time, Tali, all our current avatars will have hit middle age and developed middle age spread quite naturally. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The new platform may be a huge failure too. Think Everquest II |
15:20 |
Josain Zsun |
With every M$ announcement of the next Windows, everyone freaks. Life will go on…as soon as you buy new faster hardware with more RAM and larger HDD and lay down several hundred more for all the apps that no longer work. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
Mesh and rigging is a sore spot for classes. |
15:21 |
Camden McAndrews |
Ohhh... one area where I'm barely a noob. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One of those complex areas. |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
Wordsmith, how are we for "advanced scripting"? -We got the scripting class going now! |
15:22 |
Martini Discovolante |
most mesh related classes other places are several clases long, and we cater to new people |
15:23 |
|
Larkylouz would definitely consider a FT teacher for Photo Salon. Or a half-time one. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Is anyone working on the Avatar Appearance class? |
15:23 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes miss lindal |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am not volunteering. Just wondering. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
That just got more hellish, with the new mesh avatars. |
15:23 |
Steadman Kondor |
she sent some notes to dean wordsmith and i , i believe she is close. i can muster something up as a backup if the need becomes pressing |
15:23 |
Martini Discovolante |
i have considered it, in conjunction woith the clothing class |
15:23 |
Camden McAndrews |
Now that might be a key thing for new folks: How to customize that mesh avatar you got when you signed up. (The answer being: trash it and start over.) |
15:24 |
Steadman Kondor |
that would be good! |
15:24 |
AV Parabola |
Do we have a class on event hosting? I seem to remember taking one of those at NCI a long time ago. |
15:24 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I have been delayed on the class I'm working on due to a lot of other demands on my time, but I'm still plugging along. |
15:24 |
Martini Discovolante |
no we do not. |
15:24 |
Larkylouz |
Me, too. |
15:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Whew. Was on the edge of crashing there for a minute or two. |
15:24 |
Meora (menchor) |
there are also commercial mesh avatars that are starting to appear |
15:24 |
Steadman Kondor |
we dont have a class on event management, but one of the best ways to learn is to take part helping with an event |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm still ironing out the basic scripting. That may become a multipart rotating class. |
15:25 |
Steadman Kondor |
then you get to see from end to end... stay tuned, i'm chewing on something related to that.. |
15:26 |
AV Parabola |
Steadman, let's chat, because I think I might be able to help with that, having made so many mistakes hosting Primtionary that I got a lot of practice doing things wrong, smiles |
15:26 |
Steadman Kondor |
ok thanks Av :) |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The parable about the key to getting things right is experience. The key to experience is getting things wrong. |
15:27 |
AV Parabola |
Josain says he also might know a pltentila teacher |
15:27 |
Camden McAndrews |
pltnetilla? |
15:27 |
AV Parabola |
Hahahaha I never heard that but it is so true |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
any classes proposed need to have a syllabus run pastour esteemed Dean Of Edu, Wordsmith :) |
15:27 |
AV Parabola |
um that is typonese for potential |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
past our. |
15:27 |
Camden McAndrews |
LOL |
15:28 |
AV Parabola |
but more potent sounding, also more pithy |
15:28 |
Camden McAndrews |
I asked because I do have quite a bit of past experience in teaching in SL, specifically building. So that's one area where I could volunteer to help out, if there's something needed that I can do. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We Pasteurize all of our classes. |
15:29 |
Carl Metropolitan |
How busy are the existing basic and advanced building classes? |
15:29 |
Martini Discovolante |
and all 100% grass-fed |

15:30 |
Martini Discovolante |
Samm's is always busy. |
15:30 |
Martini Discovolante |
i am not usually on to see Serra's |
15:30 |
Meora (menchor) |
Samm has a great introduction |
15:30 |
|
Gronk Seriman thinks we should milk this topic all we can. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The advanced building had 6 this last week. Searra's other classes didn't run. |
15:31 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Lady Weatherwax has had several empty classes. Although I think that's partially because the group announcements do not seem to work. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Samm had 6 for hers |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks, Elfbiter. That could well be. |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
i had six people waiting for me today when i got here |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
for textures.. attendance seems up. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We did have 120 student hours last week. |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
but---yeh-- group notices did NOT work. |
15:32 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I have been here several times when she has appeared but the announcement has not gone through to the group. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Number of people at my trivia event seem consistent. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I have you at 13 last week, Carl. |
15:33 |
Red Quixote |
with some viewers,. you have to post a group notice as well as post in group chat,. other viewers do both simulatenously |
15:33 |
Larkylouz |
My announcements go through, at least to my own viewer, for what it is worth. |
15:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And Photo Salon at 14. |
15:33 |
AV Parabola |
Yes, that is a strange feature of SL chat these days. |
15:34 |
Martini Discovolante |
i do group chat. |
15:34 |
Gronk Seriman |
When you say Group Announcements, are you meaning the fancy box that pops up, or simply making an announcement in group chat? |
15:34 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Last week in another group I did not see my own message even if other said they had seen it. |
15:34 |
Larkylouz |
I do one of each; I haven't seen any cross-over using the LLV. |
15:34 |
Red Quixote |
A group 'notice' is the little blue popup box |
15:35 |
Meora (menchor) |
a notice will open group chat, sometimes |
15:35 |
Larkylouz |
The fancy box, for me, is the group announcement. I just open chat and cut&paste for the chat announcement. |
15:35 |
Camden McAndrews |
We see that a lot -- some folks will get a group announcement, while others don't. |
15:35 |
Martini Discovolante |
Group notices are sent, a box pops up, and they may be retrieved later. group chat is only to those on line at the time |
15:35 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I do mean those what would appear separately in their own popup. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That sounds right. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've always had a good crowd, but never enough that I've had to look at moving to Oxbridge Village. |
15:35 |
Camden McAndrews |
For example: I got the announcement for this session. Crystal did not. |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Of course I could fill up, if I announced over the Trivia Fiends group, but I dont't. |
15:36 |
Martini Discovolante |
i always have to open the group, go to notices, and see what is new. often they do not come thru |
15:36 |
Larkylouz |
Is it an option to move to the village, or the roof of the sandbox, if COU fills up? (I've never considered it, but . . .) |
15:36 |
Martini Discovolante |
we also post to SL events |
15:36 |
Camden McAndrews |
That's close to my experience, Martini, especially with the big groups. |
15:37 |
|
Larkylouz considers the pitfalls of teaching a class while flying at 1000 meters. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We were discussing events in Village last week, but not recurring classes. |
15:38 |
Larkylouz |
Yes, that was what formulated my question; or was the basis of my question, I mean |
15:38 |
Martini Discovolante |
Dean Questi had a counter for how many times the sim reached 20 av ... is that still active? |
15:38 |
Martini Discovolante |
it was surprisingly low |
15:39 |
AV Parabola |
The difference between classes and Primtionary is that for Primtionary we have a lot of regulars but for classes you attract mainly first-timers, who are much harder to target. |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
Not to my knowledge. But we can easily add such a counter. |
15:39 |
Camden McAndrews |
That surprises me. My class on building a house often had 20 folks there. |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Lady Kidd's class crowds are back. |
15:39 |
Camden McAndrews |
But... different environment; different audience. |
15:39 |
Steadman Kondor |
I have just acquired a private lot at Oxbridge Village, and will talk to the deans about offering it to the university for university use, including classes. |
15:40 |
Steadman Kondor |
It will also be a space for the Gazette bureau. |
15:40 |
Camden McAndrews |
Is Oxbridge Village a full sim? |
15:40 |
Steadman Kondor |
Yes |
15:40 |
Camden McAndrews |
Great! |
15:40 |
AV Parabola |
I'd like to hear more about the Gazette, unless everybody else already knows all about it. |
15:40 |

15:41 |

I applaud your efforts and Mr Snow's designs but I hardly think a classroom is an appropriate place for such a chatty newspaperbox |
15:41 |
AV Parabola |
Very handsome website, thanks for doing that. |

15:42 |
Steadman Kondor |
We hope you read and maybe find ways to contribute to the gazette |
15:43 |

well done, an impressive collaborative work |
15:43 |
Steadman Kondor |
Special thanks to Miss Larky here, Mr Carl and Dean Wordsmith for help along the way |

I'm excited to see it has an explanation of En Garde, I have been curious about that but overwhelmed by my ignorance. |
15:44 |
Steadman Kondor |
We are looking for articles of interest to the community here, so ideas and suggestions are welcome |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
I believe our own Phrynne gives lessons, M~ Parabola. |
15:44 |
Jorge Serapis |
May I mention we have the world's no. 1 rated En Garde player with us this evening..? :-) |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You are welcome. |
15:44 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Who is that, Jorge? |
15:44 |
Jorge Serapis |
*points to Miss Phrynne* |
15:44 |

Miss Phrynne! |

Really? Is that you, Phrynne? |
15:44 |

15:45 |

I said to Capt Nacht, we should get the Oxbridge team to challenge the TPU |
15:45 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Not that surprised. |
15:45 |
Steadman Kondor |
a tournament... |
15:45 |
AV Parabola |
Wow, so impressed... obviously I need to interview her and try to get it into the Gazette. |
15:45 |
Phrynne |
The Oxbridge team is not very active right now, unfortunately. I would love to see more activity. And yes, I do give lessons. |
15:46 |
Steadman Kondor |
Let's hope the gazette might kickstart it... that's what it's good for, promotion |
15:47 |
Steadman Kondor |
okie... i hope the gazette didn't kill the chat here. i should have only mentioned at the closure... |
15:47 |
Steadman Kondor |
i hope this means you are all busy reading it now, lol |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I am actually |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Very well done, Steadman! |
15:47 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other topics we should take up? |
15:47 |

thank you! |

15:47 |

done also |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Steadman, for the gazette, I would suggest you consider a piece of the history of Oxbridge here in SL. |
15:49 |
AV Parabola |
Yes, great idea... it is a wonderful place. |
15:49 |
Steadman Kondor |
that would be a fascinating feature :) thank you mr metroplitan |
