15:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Looks like 75 class hours taught last week. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Do we have any straggles heading this way, or should we start? |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
So we're here again, at the weekly QA. As usual, this is a somewhat free-form questions and answers session, where we will do our best to answer questions, with a focus on Oxbridge and Caledon, but veering into topics relevant to SL in general. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
We each have our area of expertise and responsibility here in Oxbridge, which you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
So with that said, who has a question? |
15:03 |
Martini Discovolante |
Carl is out there somewhere. |
15:03 |
Steadman Kondor |
75 class seems a lot for one week |
15:04 |
Martini Discovolante |
75 class? |
15:04 |
Steadman Kondor |
*class hours |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
You probably don't mean last *week*? |
15:04 |
Steadman Kondor |
month, maybe |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
We currently have 20 classes a week. And usually one or two get canceled. So 75 class hours for Oxbridge in a month makes sense. |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, week. That's the number of students in the classes each of which nominally is an hour. |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
Ah, student-hours. |
15:06 |
Steadman Kondor |
ah, thank you. that's a useful statistic. |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
With 20 classes, each is not *crowded*, then. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. A better term. |
15:07 |
Red Quixote |
'satisfied customers'... another term ;D |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Some like, this and photo salon reached double digits. |
15:07 |
Steadman Kondor |
rl universities deal with abstract measurements like that, like a unit for the equiv of a full time enrolled student for one year... |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and Carl's Trivial Entertainment. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
My trivia event (I don't know if you count it as a class) usually gets from 8 to 14 people. |
15:08 |
Steadman Kondor |
people do learn a lot of science and history from the trivia event :) |
15:08 |
Red Quixote |
yes,.. but you 'bribe' your attendees ;D |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I had you at 10, this last week, Carl. |
15:08 |
Steadman Kondor |
so it can count as a class! |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, I'm counting this as a "class" ... we deans, after all, do have a bit of class. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
True. I went to another trivia event this week and was surprised how... Intellectual, I guess mine was in comparison. |
15:09 |
Steadman Kondor |
i lost my class on the way to the sandbox... lol |
15:10 |
Red Quixote |
retrace your steps,. it may turn up |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
Scientific and literary topics seem to fit Oxbridge (and Caledon) better than the latest pop culture. |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
...or it may be in the water in the upper left of the sim. |
15:11 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Not catering to generation X for trivia? :-) |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
"Question 8...How many times has Lindsay Lohan been arrested?" |
15:12 |
|
Larkylouz giggles |
15:12 |
Steadman Kondor |
that might be gen Y |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
Infinity???? |
15:12 |
Beccha |
lol |
15:12 |
JeanClaude Barsov |
For varying definitions of Gen Y. |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
Or arguably Z. |
15:12 |
Steadman Kondor |
How many times has LL *not* been arrested... |
15:13 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
How many times Paris Hilton will be arrested... |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So about 1900 is which? |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
S, or something like that. |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
;) |
15:14 |
Steadman Kondor |
i have a question from one of the gazette writers. |
15:14 |
Steadman Kondor |
she would like to host a social in oxbridge village |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes? |
15:15 |
|
Wordsmith Jarvinen Notes the use of the plural there. |
15:15 |
Steadman Kondor |
i suggested maybe the building comp site might be suitable |
15:15 |
Steadman Kondor |
but I'll defer that judgement to the faculty here. |
15:15 |
Steadman Kondor |
we're all madly trying to meet the deadlines, but some are already thinking ahead of a social to invite all to celebrate the launch |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge display is complete and ready for SL11B to open |
15:16 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes :) it's a big week ahead for Oxbridge |
15:16 |
Steadman Kondor |
We have Miss Larylouz for 'Larky's Tips' for newcomers. Lady Fauve for fashion and event coverage. |
15:16 |
Steadman Kondor |
*Larkylouz |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
As we have talked about earlier, we can't really give away land for various events, at least not without clearing it with Desmond. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
The village is not ours to control. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Is the looking to have a regular event or a one-shot? |
15:17 |
Steadman Kondor |
Ah that site is owned by Des? Yes, a one off... |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That would be easier to get permission for. |
15:17 |
Steadman Kondor |
We could use the site where the Gazette bureau is, but that is under the sandbox |
15:17 |
Steadman Kondor |
MIght be tricky with rezzed stuff etc. though it's an okay 2nd option |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
I was under the impression that the "bureau land" was for such use? |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Steadman, I know you own a lot of Caledon Mayfair (including my old land .... sniff ... ) Is it possible an Oxbridge event could be held there? |
15:18 |
Martini Discovolante |
i hesitate to do that. Desmond has been ver generous with allowing us two parcels in the village. |
15:18 |
Steadman Kondor |
Yes, I would be happy to host in Mayfair |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
That would, incidentally, let it spill over into Burroughs, which I can supply. |
15:19 |
Steadman Kondor |
Only for some consideration that closer to the university might work better... but yes, plenty of prims in Mayfair |
15:20 |
Steadman Kondor |
Ok then, thanks for the feedback. I will respond back to Lady Fauve the village bureau and mayfair alternatives :) |
15:20 |
Steadman Kondor |
and the burroughs |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm confused. I thought we wanted to avoid Oxbridge Village for events? Or do we want to use it? Which way did Desmond say he wanted it? |
15:21 |
Steadman Kondor |
he didn't mention it, i can enquire unless some one else can recall more clearly |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Unless SL has been hit by a random chaos storm at the time, distance isn't really an issue given a LM server here. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
Generally, the Village is not ours to control. I am a little unsure about the exact terms for the *Gazette* land hosted there. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Martini can you clear this up? |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
As I understand it, the Gazette land is separate and unrelated to COUG as such. |
15:24 |
Martini Discovolante |
i tis commonwealth land that Desmond has allowed Steadman to put a building on. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I meant can you clear up the issue of "Can we have events in Oxbridge Village?" |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I would expect that to be a limited number of prims, since double prim parcels have to take from commonwealth land. |
15:26 |
Martini Discovolante |
we have had soem in the past, a poetry reading, adn the Caledon Anniversary.. which really is not "ours" |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can we have a party to there like Steadman's Gazette contributor wants to? |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
but after the avatar limit was set at 20 by becoming a homestead, we have eschewed events. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
From what I can hear and know, it sounds like yes, we *can* use the Village (as we did with, say, the building competition), but we'll have to clear it on a case-by-case basis with Desmond. |
15:30 |
Martini Discovolante |
i simply do not want to take advantage of Desmonds generosity with the Scholars area and building space he has given us. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
He worries about impacting the normal renters there by flashmobbing the area. |
15:30 |
|
Phrynne raises a hand |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
The building competition had a fairly low, steady impact; not a sudden rush. |
15:30 |
Martini Discovolante |
and if rents get tight, we can lose either at any time |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, Miss Phrynne? |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I would say that the answer logically should be that we can have a party at Oxbridge Village using the Sandbox area, however, the prims rezzed for that party must be kept with in reason (like to the level of the normal sandbox use) and that a one shot party would not require pre-approval any more than anyone else's one shot party, but a regular party event would need to be cleared with Desmond. How is that for policy? |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
I have been in Oxbridge Village since The Edge was holding concerts on a skybox over the park; occasional events are not that much of a problem unless they take up vast numbers of prims -- which those concerts did not, and they had a lot of people. |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
and that part is currently not owned. |
15:31 |
Phrynne |
or rather rented. |
15:32 |
Phrynne |
so there should be prims available, in Oxbridge Village, I would think. |
15:32 |
Martini Discovolante |
what is The Edge? |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
The prims are not an issue. There are plenty to spare from the sandbox. And in any case, a party rarely takes that many *prims*. |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
The Edge was the name of at least part of the large skybox area over the whole of the park in the center of Oxbridge Village for a year or more. |
15:33 |
Larkylouz |
The Edge was that skybox music club that was most certainly not Victorian. |
15:33 |
Dr. Flee (fleemingjenkin) |
Musicians Collective |
15:33 |
Phrynne |
there were several concerts there each week. |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
and there were four clubs. |
15:34 |
Martini Discovolante |
they paid a huge amount of rent for that. |
15:34 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Edge also disrupted teleports to the village.. |
15:34 |
Phrynne |
it no longer exists. |
15:35 |
Phrynne |
has not existed for several months now. |
15:35 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Somebody trying to TP the ground often ended up in the skybox area |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. Then I think we are okay for a one-shot party as long as we respect the prim limits of the sandbox. Is everyone in agreement? |
15:36 |
Steadman Kondor |
It sounds fine :) thanks for the support. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I see not problem with that. Best to give Desmond a courtesy note, however. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
A note early on. Assume we can, notify, and if Des had any considerations he'd let us know. |
15:37 |
Tali Rosca |
It *does* make sense to celebrate the launch of the Gazette on the gazette land. |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, if possible, to use it as an opportunity for ... uh .... "development". |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
But as I keep saying: That land is not the Oxbridge faculty's to control. So clear it with Desmond. |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
Yes, certainly i see it as positive to contributing to reflecting the strong community values here |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
and contributing towards encouraging 'development' |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Dean Steadman, have you every considered giving an occasional class on .... gazetting? |
15:39 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Desmond is working 60 hours a week with a family member in the hospital plus running Caledon. How about let's NOT bug him with trivia? |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
*ever considered ... |
15:40 |
Larkylouz |
A bit off-topic, but is there anyone who can deal with land issues in Caledon besides Des? Kamilah, perhaps? |
15:40 |
Martini Discovolante |
one event for a few hours will not disrupt the applecart in the Village. |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
IMO Desmond should be at least informed. What he does with the information is his business. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Miss Larky, can you better define "land issues"? |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
the thing is to not take advantage of the Guv's generosity y having it turn into regular fetes and events. |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
i can deal with things north Caledon and here and in the village |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
and in Vic City |
15:41 |
Steadman Kondor |
ah that is a very good point dean martini. i will take that into consideration. |
15:42 |
Larkylouz |
I had a couple of questions from people who sounded like they needed to talk to Des. I believe it had something to do with their tier not registering as being paid. |
15:43 |
Martini Discovolante |
they can check into their Transactions history |
15:43 |
Gronk Seriman |
It's possible this should be a discussion to have with Des sometime in the future...how can COU hold occasional events? |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Did you give them Desmond's gmail address? |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That does sound like an issue specific to Des. |
15:43 |
Carl Metropolitan |
desmondshang@gmail.com |
15:43 |
Larkylouz |
No. I didn't realize that was appropriate. I wouldn't normally give out an email address without permission. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or have them drop him a notecard, if they prefer. |
15:44 |
Martini Discovolante |
though an initial inspection of their rent-box device would be helpful. |
15:44 |
Martini Discovolante |
his gmail address is in his profile i believe |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
I can in the future, yes. I think the issuew as that they had sent a notecard and he hadn't been online to receive it. Ah, thank you, Martini. |
15:44 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "It is. I just checked to make sure." |
15:45 |
Martini Discovolante |
and if the payment is reflected in their Transaction history, that is evedence that they have paid. |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you. I didn't troubleshoot enough |
15:46 |
Martini Discovolante |
if they continue to get notices of payment due, then there IS a problem. |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and ... to whom .... in case some miscreant put a prim over the actual meter. |
15:46 |
Martini Discovolante |
if not, most very likely, they can rest easy. |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's always a good idea to make sure the payment box has that the payment is to Desmond Shang --- accept not substitutes. |
15:47 |
Martini Discovolante |
and the local chat should give them a specific message of anount, how long, thankees, etc. |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions? |
15:48 |
MichelleAdama |
I have a urgent question to ask with a long explanation that would not concern others here. Can I ask after the the meeting? |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
An odd graphics glitch just occurred. |
15:48 |
|
Steadman Kondor wonders how easily a newcomer could be deceived by an alt who might rename to the Guv's |
15:48 |
Steadman Kondor |
and adding that prim over the meter |
15:49 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "Catch one of us after the meeting." |
15:49 |
MichelleAdama |
Thanks |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
It seems a rather scattershot session today. Any SL-related topics from the last week in general? |
15:51 |
Tali Rosca |
Notably, LL finally updated the starter avatars, so they are now mod. |
15:51 |
Meora (menchor) |
is Oxbridge going to use the new not quite here yet group ban feature? |
15:51 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are indeed. |
15:51 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are indeed. |
15:51 |
Martini Discovolante |
pardon the duplication. |
15:52 |
Martini Discovolante |
i may not be long for this world. |
15:52 |
Steadman Kondor |
i hope you mean this sl world |
15:52 |
Martini Discovolante |
i count on nothing |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If someone is spamming or spewing abuse in the scholars group, they are out of there. |
15:53 |
Gronk Seriman |
I just experienced another graphics glitch myself. |
15:53 |
Martini Discovolante |
it will help with housekeepign immensely |
15:54 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Bye Dave______ :) |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Awwwww. |
15:54 |
MichelleAdama |
Was it that black cat walking across the stage? (Ala Matrix) |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
It seems the viewers have been a little unstable on ATI card, AFAIR. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We had someone who tried to disrupt one of these meetings later spewing on the group chat. |
15:55 |
Steadman Kondor |
dean ravelli has a black cat... |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
I saw some mention that it was actually the ATI drivers being in error, not supporting OpenGL correctly per specification, but I haven't dug much into it. |
15:56 |
Tali Rosca |
Anyway, hour our is soon up, so any last questions? |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
*our hour, that is. |
15:57 |
Steadman Kondor |
* ah just come and visit our uni's SL11B site |
15:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Woll do! |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
LM or slurl? |
15:58 |
JeanClaude Barsov |
I'll bite if no one else has something. This is quite honestly my first time here in an educational program on Second Life. I sat in here to see a bit about what's being offered around these parts. |
15:58 |
Steadman Kondor |
i will organise a group notice and LM too, unless mr carl wants the honours? :) |
15:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Will do! |
15:58 |
Steadman Kondor |
and stay tuned for the gazette launch |
15:58 |
JeanClaude Barsov |
It does look like there's quite a lot of activity here, and I appreciate that. |
15:58 |
Martini Discovolante |
Carl.. dii they give you any promotional material for SLB11? |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Not yet |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
The QA here is a bit freeform, depending a lot on what topics come up. |
15:59 |
Martini Discovolante |
so a sign could be put up to TP there? |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This may be a virtual world, but the educational efforts are real. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
We have more dedicated classes for specific topics. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
When they, do I will put it up. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. |
15:59 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It opens on june 22 |
15:59 |
|
Steadman Kondor catching up on chat - class on gazetting suggested by dean wordsmith? |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
so there is still time for them to get a poster official stuff to us |
16:00 |
Steadman Kondor |
:-) if i survive the gruelling typing this week! |
16:00 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge's kiosk will be part of the SL11B Hunt, too thanks to prizes donated by Wrath and Jayleden |
16:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Let us call it done for today/tonight, and move to general chatter outside. |
16:00 |
Meora (menchor) |
make sure the touring pods mention Oxbridge |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
BEdtime for me. |
16:01 |
Phrynne |
thank you, Deans |
16:01 |
Martini Discovolante |
thank you all for coming |
16:01 |
MichelleAdama |
Tali, can I talk with you? |
16:01 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you. |
16:01 |
Ololo Petya (olopierpa) |
Thank you |
16:01 |
Steadman Kondor |
thank you all and take care :) till next week |
16:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes, what is the problem? |
16:02 |
JeanClaude Barsov |
Thank you, take care, best regards. |
16:02 |
MichelleAdama |
This is detailed.... |
16:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
