15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Let us wait for the crowd outside to join us. |
15:03 |
Red Quixote |
greetings all |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
Welcome to the QA. I see it's the usual suspects, so I'll skip the introductions. |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
And just head straight to: Any questions or topics for tonight? |
15:03 |
Meora (menchor) |
how about the topic we were discussing? mesh |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
This week's big SL news is obviously the new starter avatars. |
15:04 |
Larkylouz |
I'm not impressed, I must say. |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
And they will be sure to drive the tutors insane in the future. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I was not either. |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
I was actually positively surprised, for what they are. |
15:05 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Can I send people to my blog where I rant--review them? |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
The big question is, what does it mean for the future of avatar customization in SL? |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
I don't know if it is my viewer or that they are quirky, but I couldn't mix and match skins and clothing and shapes last night. |
15:05 |
JeremyMichealFrey11 |
hey Glorf |
15:05 |
Red Quixote |
lol Carl |
15:05 |
|
Glorf Bulmer lives on a small street in the suburbs of South east england, which has more ethnic diversity than the new SL starter avatars. |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
You may notice that I mugged Kate Beckinsale and nabbed her coat. |
15:06 |
Larkylouz |
And the women are all too thin. My rant. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://jcarlhenders.tumblr.com/ |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
A fair bit of the clothes are actually quite useful for "normal" avatars. |
15:06 |
Steadman Kondor |
Underworld! |
15:07 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes. The "Vampire Hunter Alison" is pretty obviously an Underworld riff. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, the clothes didn't fall under the nonstandard sized useful only to those avatars? |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Right |
15:07 |
Carl Metropolitan |
They are not even interchangeable among the new avatars of the same sex |
15:07 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, given how much trouble I have with "standard sizing" in the first place, all I can say is... I can actually use a fair bit of these clothes. |
15:08 |
Glorf Bulmer |
Elements are cannibalizable... but you have to know what you're doing. |
15:08 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think LL did improve the diversity somewhat. |
15:08 |
Larkylouz |
I had trouble making them fit another mesh avatar, but like I say, I'm not sure how much is viewer and how much is buggy avatars. |
15:08 |
Steadman Kondor |
How did you find those items to cannibalise? in the Library folder of the inventory? |
15:09 |
Larkylouz |
Yes. the library actually has a ton of stuff that is worht going through. |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
They are under LIbrary/Clothing/Initial Outfits. |
15:09 |
Larkylouz |
Worth. |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You have to drag the avatar to your body and wear it to get it to copy to your non-library part of your inventory. I don't know why. |
15:09 |
Steadman Kondor |
Oh found them, thanks |
15:09 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Copy paste did not work for me. |
15:09 |
Steadman Kondor |
Or i could try wearing them then saving the Outfit |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
I just dragged them from there to my own inventory. But I've heard reports of strangely flaky behaviour. |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
..such as he inability to "Add" alphamasks. |
15:10 |
Larkylouz |
The library puts anything you use from there in your inventory. Can be rather annoying. Impossible to lose Library stuff, though. :^) |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
But with a lot of the standard sliders now shot, and the inability to wear system clothes... all I can say to the tutors is: Brace for impact! |
15:11 |
Larkylouz |
Guess I'd better play with them in more depth. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
It will *not* be easy to explain all the quirks it takes to outfit an avatar now. |
15:12 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think you are best off telling them to start fresh with a basic shape and clothes |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
I don't know if it is related, but after I had the trouble with not being able to see Mesh with the latest LLV (I clean installed an older viewer), I have run into at least one person who had similar issues with FS. |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
I used the latest and the one before that to preview the new starter avatars. (I got an update in the middle of doing so). |
15:13 |
Larkylouz |
Truthfully, none of the default avatars are worth writing home about. I may jus ttell people to be patient until they are ready to go shop and get good stuff. |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
That worked well enough. But there seems to be some flakiness with ATI cards currently. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
Whether they are worth writing home about or not, they are here, and they are what new resident will come equipped with. |
15:14 |
Larkylouz |
I assume it is a function of my old laptop. Ravelli told me it had something to do with the GL version I'm running, circa 2006. I can dig out what he said, Tali, if you like. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
You may be able to update your drivers, then. |
15:15 |
Larkylouz |
Oh, I will learn about them - no worries, Tali. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It can be a good idea to see if there are more recent drivers for a graphics card also. |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
Even if the laptop vendor no longer updates the drivers, you can likely download a version from your graphics card manufacturer. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
One thing that we might look into: it might be time to take a look at updating our starter avatars here. They are nearly five years old. I know it is a huge job and I'm not going to suggest we take it on just now, but I have had an offer for two improved African American skins from a creator I know |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
I would *love* an update to the avatars, no offense intended to the current ones. |
15:16 |
Steadman Kondor |
Could we combine that with an avatar customisation class? |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
And if we can showcase some racial diversity on top of that, all the better. |
15:16 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And I know that there are several full per mesh steampunk outfits that we might be able to make arrangements with the creators for to give out no transfer if we asked nicely. |
15:16 |
Steadman Kondor |
then we could point to the class offering from the 'new' COU starter av's |
15:17 |
|
Steadman Kondor checks the schedule... |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
Carl, is that something you can go ahead with? |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
I'm certainly in favor. |
15:18 |
Larkylouz |
I have been writing a class about Inventory. It could easily dovetail with a class about avatar customisation, though I don't want to take that on until I get a computer I trust. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Ambergris Baphomet was working on a new Avatar Appearance class for us, I think. But she had to pull back due to RL issues. The last I heard Lindal was interested and was going to talk to Wordsmith. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Of course, avatar customization becomes more subtle when avatar parts aren't interchangeable. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I would be willing to, but I want to finish the class I'm working on right now and not overcommit |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
Not a class, I meant. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
But contacting potential donors for outfits. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
As it is not something we need right away, and is a nice discrete project, I would not mind heading it up, as long as Martini and the person in charge of the tutorials approve. |
15:19 |
Steadman Kondor |
we should encourage and support such a class development... i can see it combining well with our starter kits |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
The class I'm working on is the "Designing with Full Perm Mesh" |
15:19 |
Red Quixote |
it was popular, in the past |
15:19 |
Steadman Kondor |
that's great, mr carl :) |
15:19 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "Martini and Rav needs to ok it, but I can hardly imagine they'll not be in favor." |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I'm coordinating that with Wordsmith. |
15:20 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, but I'm only "emeritus" so I think it is proper that I give the people actually doing all the work the final say :) |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And that effort is looking good. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
Rav cries everytime LL updates the UI. |
15:21 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Tell me about it. They pushed out 2.0 with like a week's notice on us. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, yes! |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
But in any case, when it comes to the new mesh starter avatars, we'll have to roll with the punches. |
15:22 |
Steadman Kondor |
can we suggest help for dean rav, like a small team of volunteers to help with some updates? |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
I see this largely as the starting signal for rethinking avatars. |
15:23 |
Steadman Kondor |
perhaps when the oxbridge gazette is up - i intend to put a jobs section... |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
If SL rolls out a new major update, I'm sure people will volunteer to help him. I don't know of one coming soon though. |
15:23 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But then again, every new CEO seems to do one. |
15:23 |
Chat Range Scanner |
...Wordsmith Jarvinen left chat range |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
We may farm out as much as we can, but to be perfectly honest, I think coordinating things like screenshots and writeups between different contributors would cause him as much stress as doing it himself. |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
But there may be more separate sections which can be done by others if the need be. |
15:24 |
|
Steadman Kondor nods |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
That was how I found it to be when I was doing the orignal tutorial |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
But in any case, as Carl said, there are no signs in the stars that any major update is upcoming. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There's always some overhead in gaining uniformity and consistent format when you have multiple people updating something ... doing image editing. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
Anyway, that was a somewhat scattershot discussion about updates in general. |
15:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Unless it's a often recurring event, that overhead can be more than just having one person do it. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
Did that spur any specific questions? |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
...not to kill the discussion. |
15:31 |
Steadman Kondor |
just a quick update on the gazette then... |
15:31 |
Steadman Kondor |
there has been some work on the website, with a space on the right for sponsored adverts. |
15:31 |
Steadman Kondor |
I've been working with prof. larkylouz, to set up some monthly photo challenges for the photo salon members |
15:31 |
Larkylouz |
It looks good, Steadman. |
15:32 |
Steadman Kondor |
(that the gazette will publish) |
15:32 |
Steadman Kondor |
for end may, the theme is Purple, and some SLB11 related challenges next month. |
15:32 |
Steadman Kondor |
I set up a 'prize store' so that winning entries will get to pick a prize |
15:33 |
Steadman Kondor |
(i used some quality gacha's and other transfer perm items) |
15:33 |
Larkylouz |
:^) |
15:33 |
Larkylouz |
What is a gacha? I keep seeing that word. |
15:33 |
Steadman Kondor |
i also was decorating a temporary gazette office in the village, to put up posters and a postbox for the gazette. |
15:33 |
Steadman Kondor |
Gacha is like a game of chance, where you randomly get some common or rare gift item |
15:34 |
Steadman Kondor |
a bit like a lucky box? geez i forget that kid's game |
15:34 |
Larkylouz |
oh, okay. thanks |
15:34 |
Meora (menchor) |
usually something that would sell for more and the items are usually transferable |
15:34 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But the best stuff is "Rare" and you have to keep paying to get it. |
15:34 |
Steadman Kondor |
the good thing is that some items are quite lovely, and some people amass a lot of duplicates, trying to get a rare prize |
15:35 |
Steadman Kondor |
some commons are very nice too... |
15:35 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I love the brazenness of the marketing; the name sounds just like "gotcha!" |
15:35 |
Steadman Kondor |
i hope that might provide a nice regular incentive to participate in challenges, without using lindens. |
15:35 |
Steadman Kondor |
i'm sure COU will be holding bigger comps with linden prizes as well, which the gazette will cover! |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, in fairness, it's Japanese. |
15:36 |
JeremyMichealFrey11 |
hey Toni |
15:36 |
Toni (toni122) |
Hi |
15:36 |
Steadman Kondor |
that's about it for the gazette... a lot more work to do... |
15:37 |
Steadman Kondor |
i'd love to set up a regular scripting and building challenges for the scholars too... |
15:37 |
Larkylouz |
Hi Martini |
15:37 |
Martini Discovolante |
hi.... |
15:38 |
|
Martini Discovolante waves |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
hi dean martini! |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Hi Martini |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
Interesting idea of a "scripting challenge". How would that work? Solving a set task? Or showing off some impressive script? |
15:38 |
Larkylouz |
I'd like to say that I'm impressed by your energy and creativity, Dean Kondor. |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
yes miss rosca. i might think of a challenge... and see how the scholars respond |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Just be careful not to over commit yourself is all I can say. |
15:38 |
Steadman Kondor |
then i might seek your help in reviewing how the script works. |
15:39 |
Steadman Kondor |
I hope to make use of collaboration with different colleagues and volunteers, to make the tasks fun and manageable 0 |
15:39 |
Larkylouz |
Can the area where we had the building contest last winter be adapted to temporary photo gallery or other displays for all these contests? Or have you already got plans for that, Dean Kondor? |
15:39 |
Steadman Kondor |
there would be space at the gazette HQ, currently to be revamped by dean martini |
15:40 |
Larkylouz |
I see. Okay. |
15:40 |
Steadman Kondor |
there is some space now too actually, at the temporary HQ. it could be roomier... |
15:40 |
Steadman Kondor |
i have set up some desks with typewriters and cameras for the staff to join the paper, lol |
15:41 |
Steadman Kondor |
budding journalists... |
15:41 |
Larkylouz |
:^) Typewriters, eh? Better than my laptop, which I thought was bottom line. <grin> |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The catfish of laptops? |
15:42 |
Larkylouz |
eeeuuuuw |
15:42 |
Steadman Kondor |
2 prim mesh typewriters from Cheeky Pea store... |
15:42 |
JeremyMichealFrey11 |
hey Glorf |
15:43 |
Tali Rosca |
Other things on the menu tonight? |
15:43 |
Red Quixote |
would be lotharios? |
15:43 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Would not word processor powered by difference engine be more suitable? :-) |
15:44 |
Steadman Kondor |
perhaps i might set that as a building challenge, a steampunk typing machine |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
:^) |
15:45 |
Gronk Seriman |
Those wrod processor thingies in the movie "Brazil" were fascinating.... |
15:46 |
|
Steadman Kondor googling for a picture... |
15:46 |
Red Quixote |
Brasil,. .brilliant film.. got to love Terry Gilliams work |
15:46 |
Steadman Kondor |
did it prefigure the steampunk movement? |
15:46 |
Red Quixote |
never know what those animators will do next |
15:47 |
Red Quixote |
to some degree, yes |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
Other Oxbridge-related topics we need to round off before the hour is up? |
15:49 |
Martini Discovolante |
next? |
15:50 |
Red Quixote |
I would like to re-iterate the importance of staff sharing intel concerning interlopers, trolls and other various malcontents that may infiltrate our midst |
15:50 |
Larkylouz |
What is the protocol, Red. I tell Martini if someone has been banned, and I tell anyone on staff who is around. More? |
15:50 |
JeremyMichealFrey11 |
Ellen? |
15:51 |
Larkylouz |
Ms. Ellen, Mr. Frey, please keep irrelevant comments to IM. this is a meeting. |
15:51 |
Red Quixote |
I think communication of such matters is very important, if not critical in some case to ensure that things continue to run smoothly |
15:52 |
Larkylouz |
I agree. I just am no tsure what is overkill and gossip and what is desired. |
15:53 |
Martini Discovolante |
if someone is interrupting /disrupting, or making a fuss, they can be parcel banned. |
15:53 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The most common communication if someone has reached that point is to ban them and inform Martini. |
15:53 |
Martini Discovolante |
if they need estate banning, send me a note card. |
15:53 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Do you have questions, Victor? |
15:53 |
Tali Rosca |
Victor, you're welcome; take a seat. (Though we're at the tail end of the meeting) |
15:54 |
Hajfarhad |
hello every body |
15:54 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are not here to police things, but to maintain a comfortable and calm environment |
15:54 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
One of the places for SL beginners |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
In the case of something which is likely to spread, giving a realtime warning in the COU group may also be appropriate. |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
I think Red and I are speaking more of communication between tutors and professors. that is my impression, however. |
15:54 |
Hajfarhad |
all have many Q |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
Notice, the COU, though. *Not* COUG. |
15:54 |
Red Quixote |
that is correct Larky |
15:54 |
Martini Discovolante |
real actual griefings are far and few between thankfully. |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Caledon Oxbridge is for people to learn about Second Life |
15:55 |
Martini Discovolante |
most instances require management in the moment, and not any further actoinb |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It's like an InfoHub except we have people to help and Information. |
15:55 |
Martini Discovolante |
action |
15:55 |
Hajfarhad |
SORRY, where are we now? |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. I am familar with NCI and Kuula. |
15:55 |
Hajfarhad |
its a church but in which city? |
15:56 |
Red Quixote |
most of us are |
15:56 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Most of us are |
15:56 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are just a place in Second Life |
15:56 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Oxbridge has a similar mission |
15:56 |
Larkylouz |
This is Caledon Oxbridge University. Look at the top of your screen, and you will see the name of the area where you are. In the whit e box. |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Here is more information on where you are: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/ |
15:57 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I've been gone from there for nearly five years, so it is not surprising you have not heard of me. |
15:57 |
Steadman Kondor |
RL calls i'm afraid. It's been good to see you all. Take care and till next time! |
15:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
tc, Dean Steadman. |
15:57 |
Red Quixote |
bye Steadman,.. g'nite |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
It doesn't seem like we have any more QA-relevant topics, so let us call it adjourned. |
15:57 |
|
Steadman Kondor waves and poofs away |
15:57 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
15:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
15:58 |
|
Sauce Sorrowman just stopped by to ensure nothing was on fire. :P |
15:58 |
Larkylouz |
Good evening, all. Thank you, Deans. And friends. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
It sounds, though, like there are lots of topics for general chat outside. |
15:58 |
Red Quixote |
good to see you Sauce |
15:58 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
no actual questions |
15:58 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bedtime for me. |
15:58 |
Hajfarhad |
but it will have terrible future |
15:58 |
Larkylouz |
bye meora. see you later. |
15:58 |
|
Glorf Bulmer offers her thanks to the Deans and assures them she was listening, honest! |
15:58 |
Red Quixote |
g'nite Elf |
15:59 |
Larkylouz |
heee |
15:59 |
Meora (menchor) |
goodbye |
15:59 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Be seeing you |
