15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, with the region full, we might as well get underway. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Greetings and welcome to this week's QA with the Deans. Once again, we will answer questions and guide the discussion about topics relevant to Oxrdge, Caledon and SL in general. Each dean has his or her area of responsibility, which you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
This is a somewhat free-form questions-and-answers, with no set topic, so who has the first question? |
15:03 |
Meora (menchor) |
The Oxbridge loop for CAT was running yesterday |
15:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yay! |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I noticed the CAT running over at Southend also. |
15:04 |
Carl Metropolitan |
My area of responsibility is taking credit for everyone else's hard work and basking in their reflected glory. I don't know if it mentions that on the website, though. |
15:04 |
zsazsy |
whats 'cat'? |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Caledon Air Transport |
15:04 |
zsazsy |
ty |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Which are airships. |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
The *slightly* misnamed Caledon Air Transport. -Since it also includes the sub routes. |
15:05 |
Renee Caxton |
There is a ferry that runs out back of my parcel in the Cay, too |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
So, airships and underwater ships. freely ridable .... Caledon public transport. |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
Technically speaking, I don't think the ferry is a CAT. |
15:06 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Is the ferry part of Caledon Rail? Or a third entity? |
15:06 |
Renee Caxton |
Ah |
15:06 |
Renee Caxton |
I really do not know |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
To my knowledge, is it a third entity. |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The distinction has to do with responsibility for keeping it running. |
15:08 |
Renee Caxton |
Which is quite a challenge the way things keep changing around here |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Indeed, both in terms of sims and in terms of what LL can do to functionality.... |
15:09 |
Renee Caxton |
Are there any upcoming changes to the Caledon landscape? Sims coming or going? |
15:10 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
have not heard about any changes |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Hopefully, things are stable for the time being. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
Only Des know the specifics. |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
When it comes to the economics of Caledon, the Oxbridge faculty has no more information than any other Caledonian. |
15:12 |
Renee Caxton |
You need better spies :-) |
15:13 |
Meora (menchor) |
Des usually tries to get everyone moved off of a sim thats disappearing |
15:13 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I propose you appoint a "Dean of Espionage" :) |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
We could possibly draft Des for that position. That would make things easy. |
15:13 |
Meora (menchor) |
Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
In terms of other info, Professor Quixote is not teaching a second tier animations class on Tuesdays. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(if you haven't been reading recent schedules). |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
Joking apart, though, as we have mentioned before, when it comes to "official" information about Caledon or SL, the Oxbridge faculty are no more authoritative than anybody else. |
15:15 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Keep in mind that Desmond doesn't run Oxbridge. Oxbridge rents this land from the Caledon Estate just like everyone else. The only difference is our rent is artificially low, nearly his cost, and we don't pay for the parcel owned by the Caledon Library in the center. So he makes no money on us, but loses none either. And Oxbridge is independent of Caledon. |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
We just try to keep our ear to the ground. |
15:16 |
Red Quixote |
Can I be Dean of Silly Walks? |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
As Carl says. Oxbridge benefits from being a grandfathered sim, so we have a lower-than-usual tier. |
15:17 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No, that's not quite correct. We are a homestead sim. I don't think our cost is grandfathered the way the 195US/month sims are. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One might say that Oxbridge isn't fully independent .... more like a commonwealth relationship. Part of ... but managed independently. |
15:18 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Our original sim was one of the grandfathered sims, but when we went to homestead size, it got renamed and moved elsewhere in Caledon, bumping a 295US/month sim. |
15:18 |
Renee Caxton |
Oh, wow. Oxbridge used to be in a different place? |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
So we align with normal homestead rules after the change, after previously being a grandfathered (full) sim? |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No. Always the same place. Just a different server running the virtual place. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Right. |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No ... the location has remained the same, but the actual "simulator" changed. |
15:19 |
Renee Caxton |
Oh. |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
No longer having the luxury of 15000 prims. |
15:19 |
Renee Caxton |
Ya, that I knew |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
We were previously a full sim. We are now a homestead, which is essentially a quarter-powered sim. |
15:19 |
Renee Caxton |
And only 20 avatars |
15:19 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
I thought we still had a slight advantage of being grandfathered, but that may be me mixing things up. Sorry for any confusion. |
15:21 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
LL moved us to a simulator with less lag on request, when we had some serious issues. but thats a while ago |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
There are grandfathered homestead sims in existence. |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Homestead-Regions/ta-p/846139 |
15:22 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't think Oxbridge is one. Not to my memory at least. I can ask Desmond to be sure. |
15:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other questons? |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
But Oxbridge didn't carry over its grandfathered status when converting to homestead? I actually don't know. I know what we pay in tier, but I don't know what Des pays LL. |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
In any case, this is a good time to point out that Oxbridge is a rented sim in Caledon, like any other sim. |
15:25 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I.e., we have to raise the money for our tier :) |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and ... Dean Kondor has to that end collected current sponsors, listed on the board outside and on the boards in this room. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We also now have a page on our website listing our sponsors. |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/sponsors.php |
15:27 |
Renee Caxton |
I love the website. It is very well done. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
It needs a link to how to become a sponsor, too. |
15:27 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Someone asked me and all I could do was tell them to talk to Steadman. |
15:28 |
Larkylouz |
What exactly does a sponsor do? Is sponsorship conferred upon a certain level of donation, or consistency of donation? Or? |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That is the actual method, but I can definitely add that. |
15:28 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It is a donation covering a period of time. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
Steadman recently pinged all the previous sponsors, and had them commit to a... quaterly, I think, sponsorship. |
15:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I believe the amount for that is 4000 $L. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
It has been a pro-active effort on his part, contacting potential sponsors. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
If you want to sponsor, definitely contact him. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The boards in here are now displaying on a rotating weekly basis. |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
We are brainstorming some alternate ways to become "patrons" of Oxbridge. |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Also, the money that goes in to the donation medallions helps a lot, too. |
15:31 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
faculty members will find a note card in the Faculty Kit about sponsoring, which they may spread, it is called "COU Sponsor Classes at Caledon Oxbridge 2014-03-25" |
15:31 |
Carl Metropolitan |
ah. Thank you |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
This is why Ravelli is Dean of Information. ;) |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
And Steadman of Development. He did an impressive fund-raising job. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Up to Ravelli and Steadman, really. |
15:33 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I think higher transparency is usually a good thing. |
15:34 |
|
Ravelli Ormstein totally agrees |
15:35 |
Larkylouz |
I mean no infringment on anyone's work. I just know that I had no clue how much all this costs in RL money - and I expect others don't realize either. |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
I don |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't think I reveal any secrets by saying that we pay ~200,000 L$ on tier per year. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The tier for Oxbridge is something over 200,000 $L per year; |
15:36 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I know that after I left, NCI has twice had kerfluffles over "where did the money go". I got called in to do an independent audit once (if that gives you an idea of how upset people were). Transparency helps remove the risk of that happening. |
15:36 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The stipend we pay instructors currently is 250 $L / class. |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
And the token salary the teachers get amount to somewhere in the vicinity of... as Wordsmith just said. |
15:37 |
Tali Rosca |
Depending a little on how many classes we have runningt. |
15:37 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello Phrynne |
15:37 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Carl is getting a bit more than that to allow for prizes for Trivial Entertainment. |
15:37 |
Phrynne |
hello Deans |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes, and I give it all away, plus 200L$ of my own money now :) |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I added Random Bonus Questions. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So everyone could have a chance to win something. |
15:38 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I don't need more money! I'm happy to kick in 200L$ a week. |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
So basically, give and take, running Oxbridge costs half a million Linden dollar per year. |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
Which is the equivalent of 2000 $, in round numbers. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Being a dean does not provide a stipend, but does present the opportunity to return litter. |
15:40 |
Larkylouz |
Perhaps we should get a football team to bringin more money? |
15:40 |
Red Quixote |
can you keep the good litter? |
15:40 |
|
Larkylouz flutters her eyelashes innocently. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perms generally prevent such..... |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Those eyelashes, however, remind me that Photo Salon will be moving next week to 5pm on Saturdays. |
15:42 |
Meora (menchor) |
excellent |
15:42 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Prof Larkylouz, concurring. |
15:43 |
Renee Caxton |
I will have to make a note or I will miss it :-) |
15:43 |
Meora (menchor) |
make sure there is a notice or 2 |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Wordsmith! |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I will be updating the schedules to reflect that.... |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
That was a good discussion about the running of Oxbridge. |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other topics? |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And will let the ... um..... coordinator ... do the announcements... ;) |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Yes, I'm on it. Thank you. |
15:45 |
Carl Metropolitan |
But "A Trivial Entertainment" will be at 7pm Tuesday night as always. Come and win L$ prizes and impress everyone with your mastery of obscure information! |
15:46 |
|
Carl Metropolitan <= shameless |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
Last week, there was a question about the SL birthday celebration. It has now been announced for Sunday June 22nd – Sunday June 29th. |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
http://slcommunitycelebration.com/2014/04/19/second-life-11th-birthday-community-celebration-is-coming/ |
15:46 |
Meora (menchor) |
SL11B |
15:47 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Applications for Exhibitors (i.e. people who want a plot to build on) will open on April 27th. |
15:48 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Okay. I will make sure to get an Oxbridge one in. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Many thanks for that effort. |
15:48 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
that is a great idea Carl. let us know if you need anything for it |
15:49 |
Carl Metropolitan |
I will be recycling the VWBPE exhibit for the most part. I do that every year :) |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
Sneaky :-) |
15:50 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
"same procedure as every year" |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One way or the other, I presume, depending which occurs first. |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Very few people ever see the VWBPE exhibit. |
15:51 |
|
Phrynne raises a hand |
15:51 |
Carl Metropolitan |
So it's new to 95% of the people who see it at SLnB |
15:51 |
Niki Listern |
I am sorry to all I need to go I am busy mom |
15:51 |
Niki Listern |
take care to all |
15:51 |
Phrynne |
Does this exhibit include anything about the Caledon Quest? |
15:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks for coming, Miss Niki. |
15:51 |
Red Quixote |
bye Niki |
15:51 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
take care, Niki! |
15:51 |
|
Renee Caxton shudders to think of the pile of discarded prims that must be hiding somewhere from all the "delete"s she has done |
15:52 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Yes. There is a poster for it |
15:53 |
Josain Zsun |
The bits get recycled on Facebook |
15:53 |
Carl Metropolitan |
And there is a balloon from the one of the waypoints. |
15:53 |
|
Phrynne nods |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
We're closing in on the hour. Any last question(s)? |
15:55 |
Carl Metropolitan |
When is the new mesh lecture hall coming? |
15:55 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
hehe |
15:55 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
we made a good progress this week, but there is still a lot to do |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
I would like to point out that the "hehe" came from the person who are best positioned to answer that question. |
15:56 |
Larkylouz |
I noticed that the 'class in session' button is gone. |
15:56 |
Noriko Engawa |
Is it a new build or are you meshing this one? |
15:56 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i would say, the mesh is more or less done, but it needs optimization. and then some lamps and additional features... will take perhaps 2-3 weeks i fear |
15:56 |
Tali Rosca |
That is actually a casualty of last week's "somebody accidentally moved the entire hall". It's buried somewhere in the wall. |
15:57 |
Larkylouz |
Ohh! I see. Okay. |
15:57 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
we are creating a new mesh, but it is bases on the look of this existing hall, plus some more details |
15:57 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
*based |
15:58 |
|
Josain Zsun likes the sloping floor. |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
Class in session is only visible on one side |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
You can see it from outside |
15:58 |
Carl Metropolitan |
What I saw of it looked fantastic. |
15:58 |
Larkylouz |
Yes. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
The button to toggle it, however, is buried in the wall. |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nods, and yes, the button is in the wall. Just clicked it on. |
15:58 |
Larkylouz |
So one can still turn it on if one finds the button. Okay. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's on the level of the stripe. |
15:59 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
if anyone wants to see the current state of the new Lecture Hall, go to the Atelier and look around, it is behind the Atelier's stage |
15:59 |
|
Renee Caxton got a parrot stuck inside her fireplace her first week in SL |
15:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ooo! Nice! Thank you' |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
I think that's it for tonight, then. Some good information about Oxbridge tonight. |
16:01 |
Meora (menchor) |
thank you deans |
16:01 |
Larkylouz |
RL is barking. I must take my leave. Thank you, everyone. |
16:01 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Happy Easter! |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all for coming. |
16:01 |
Renee Caxton |
Thank you, Deans |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
|
Josain Zsun got stuck inside one of the tower pillars here in his early days. |
16:01 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
and many thanks for being here today |
