Tali Rosca |
And so we're at it again. Welcome to the weekly QA, where the deans of Oxbridge answers questions about Oxbridge, Caledon and SL. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
We'll give the last people a minute to get ready and find a seat. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
...or an elephant. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
We're not picky. |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
As many of you know, we each have our area of expertise, as described here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
But without further ado, let us set to it. What is the first question tonight? |
15:04 |
|
The camera cannot focus user DrNicolasHel because they are outside your draw distance. |

15:04 |
Stela Nokt |
Hello. I got stuck on the Quest at the third clue. Any tips? :) |
15:05 |
Martini Discovolante |
which clue is that? |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
*Everyone* gets stuck at the third clue! |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
The Linden tree? |
15:05 |
Martini Discovolante |
too see the names of things, right click on them and choose EDIT |
15:05 |
Stela Nokt |
I was at a grey standing stone. |
15:05 |
Martini Discovolante |
ooooh that one. |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
(I haven't been on the quest for a long, long while, so I'll direct the question to anybody with a fresher memory) |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
i have not in 2-3 versions |
15:08 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
*is totally out of date* |
15:08 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Well, carry on then. I'll try again sometime. I just want to say that I am very impressed with the tutorial here.. |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
Perhaps you can ask in the Caledon Oxbridge University Group, if nobody here remembers off the top of their head. |
15:08 |
Larkylouz |
I believe someone tolde me a clue, "Look on the lintel." |
15:09 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Thanks Larkylouz. :) |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions? |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
(I guess the previous was *really* a quest-ion). |
15:10 |
|
Larkylouz giggles |
15:10 |
|
Gronk Seriman rolls eyes |
15:11 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
I can keep finding questions, meanwhile. How would you recommend learning about victorian steampunk *ladies wear*? |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
*Learning* about it? |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
Or finding it? |
15:12 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Both. I am prepared to make my own fashion and avatars but I would like to save time. :) |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, the core is of course Victorian, but it largely depends on what style you're veering towards from there. The classical Jules Verne would be pretty "normal" Victorian, but Caledon is verging into rather fantastical variations, with airship pirates and the stereotypical mad scientists. |
15:14 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And some other regions are more into bleak working.class environment. |
15:14 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Ok, that helps. :) |
15:14 |
Martini Discovolante |
and we amintain a fantasy aspect as well, along victorian themes |
15:15 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Maybe I am a bit of a bunny too. :) |
15:15 |
Martini Discovolante |
maintain an occasional fantasy aspect, or make room for it. |
15:15 |
|
Martini Discovolante adjusts her elephant;s ear |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
However stereotypical to mention it, the web comic Girl Genius hits the crazy fantastical steampunk style pretty well. |
15:15 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
*feeds pieces of coal to his shoulder pet* |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
(To the point where we have a couple of jägers in Caledon). |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There certainly are web resources on steampunk fashion and steampunk clothing. |
15:16 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And Wulfenbach Embassy |
15:17 |
Martini Discovolante |
and their rResource Center in Kittiwickshire |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
For shops... well, lots of people have their favorites. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
...and this could *cough* be a good idea for a class; showing off such looks. |
15:17 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
And there are steampunk-related Hunts |
15:18 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Tali. That would be great. |
15:18 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Are those hunts in Caledon Mr. Skysmith? |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
(I am nagging Gronk, who has talked about arranging such a show-and-tell about avatar looks). |
15:19 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
No, althought some Caledon shops have been among the participants. |
15:19 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Hopefully SL has lots of hunts? |
15:20 |
Martini Discovolante |
loads. |
15:20 |
Red Quixote |
there are many different kinds of hunts |
15:20 |
Martini Discovolante |
and there are blogs and groups that specialize in discussing them :) |
15:20 |
|
Gronk Seriman i on a hunt of her own. For a Round Tuit. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
IIRC, the "Historical Hunts" have a dedicated web site, and it includes the Steam Hunts. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
This may not be the right forum to give advertise specific stores, but feel free to catch me afterwards for recommendations of some of my favorites. |
15:22 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
TU. Ms. Tali Rosca. |
15:23 |
Martini Discovolante |
lets just say there are several on our Sister Sim, Caledon Oxbridge Village :) |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions? |
15:25 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have a general SL question. |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, Miss Gronk? |
15:25 |
Gronk Seriman |
Since Server Side Baking took effect, can I assume that when I seem to be broken, everybody sees me broken, now? |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
There are still some local caching issues. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
And people may have trouble downloading a texture others can get. |
15:27 |
Larkylouz |
Does this refer to the cloud issue? |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
So it'll not strictly be exactly the same for everybody. But it should be a lot more consistent at least. |
15:27 |
Larkylouz |
I've seen a lot more of that lately. The old fixes seem to work. Do I understand that if I see someone as a cloud, they do, too? |
15:27 |
Gronk Seriman |
The cloud, being grey, or a relally hoorrific one, a mishapen mesh avatar. |
15:27 |
Martini Discovolante |
not always, larkylouz |
15:28 |
Red Quixote |
curiously,.. I have seen cases lately where an avatar complains of them not rezzing completely on their screen,.. yet others see them fine |
15:28 |
Larkylouz |
Yes, I've seen that , too, Professor |
15:28 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
In my experience, the problem of people seeing each other differently still persists. |
15:28 |
Martini Discovolante |
they might be cached on their side, or not. |
15:28 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "The cloud makes sense; that's one person, for whatever network reasons, just not getting any data". |
15:29 |
James MacCloude (mac6572) |
it's happened to me twice |
15:29 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Parts of outfit may load to others even if the user themselves may not see them. |
15:29 |
Meora (menchor) |
sometimes for whatever reason there is a bake fail on part of the body from the server |
15:30 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
I get a message that says I will look fine to others, when I am a cloud. I was stuck as a cloud & went to a special rezz spot & loaded only 4 pieces of my avi to recover. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
An actual bake fail on the server should be seen by everyone, though. |
15:31 |
Meora (menchor) |
it was seen as gray for that part |
15:31 |
Gronk Seriman |
So SSB is like cold medicine. Sort of helps, but doesn't make the problem go away. |
15:32 |
Red Quixote |
:P |
15:32 |
Gronk Seriman |
Does Ctrl-Alt-R still do anything any more? I see no reaction to it. |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
No, it doesn't. |
15:32 |
Meora (menchor) |
it seems to happen when the simulator is having problems like failing to read a notecard |
15:34 |
Gronk Seriman |
The only weapon I have left is to actually Ruth myself...chose an avatar that shares nothing with the avi I was wearing. |
15:36 |
Larkylouz |
Do you have the cloud notecard, Gronk? |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
I have seen quite a few examples of people being a cloud to themselves and looking fine to others, and I have never found a cure. |
15:37 |
Larkylouz |
I don't think I've ever had a fail going through each steip of the notecard while helping others. Once, we had to do everything on it; usually it happens much quicker than that. |
15:37 |
Larkylouz |
*step |
15:37 |
|
Gronk Seriman shakes her head no to Larky |
15:37 |
Meora (menchor) |
sometimes if you are wearing something in the outfits folder you can open it and sometimes something is listed as not worn |
15:37 |
James MacCloude (mac6572) |
I made a note card but you have to remember to save your appearence before you try what I found works |
15:38 |
Meora (menchor) |
try wearing it and it triggers |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
The brute force "character test" which essentially changes everything about your avatar and forces a download still seems to be the most reliable. |
15:40 |
Larkylouz |
Essentially what Gronk said she was doing. |
15:40 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "Often, it is the shape". |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
But I've seen surprisingly many times where changing that didn't help. |
15:41 |
Larkylouz |
Sometimes it is as simple as changing your group affiliation. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't think I've seen that work since serverside baking came out. Does that still work? |
15:42 |
Larkylouz |
I wouldn't swear to it, Tali. |
15:42 |
Meora (menchor) |
hasn't worked for me |
15:43 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Essentially I think SL is having problems when these problems occur. I've learned to check the status of SL. |
15:44 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, it's hard to get around something like the inventory server not working. |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
Though I suspect quite a few of those "Cloud to myself, but not others" are local network trouble. |
15:44 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
I have less experience in SL then ... |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other topics we should move on to? |
15:45 |
Gronk Seriman |
That's always a good idea, Miss Nokt. When thing are odd, check Grid Status. |
15:45 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
More SL glitches? |
15:46 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
When I put on a HUD my clothes and inventory disappear sometimes. I have learned to be in a dressing area. |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Standard viewer? |
15:47 |
Tali Rosca |
The typical way to do that is to rightclick a folder and "Replace current outfit" rather than "Add to current outfit". |
15:48 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
Standard viewer. I place a HUD with "wear" or "attach to HUD" .Either the HUD or SL is acting up. |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
I haven't seen that glitch except for, as I said, when I accidentally choose the wrong option. |
15:49 |
Meora (menchor) |
wear can cause that |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
When you want to add something to an already good outfit, it's always better to use the "Add" than the "Wear" feature. |
15:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
Add adds if there is an avaiable spot. Wear may knock off what's already there. |
15:52 |
Larkylouz |
Wear knocks off other items of the same layer. Ergo, if you want to layer shirts,WEAR the first one and ADD THE top one. |
15:53 |
Meora (menchor) |
or wear when you are doing something like changing hair so it does knock the other off |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
By the way, here at the last minutes, I'll mention that we still have... 2 slots, I think, open in the building contest. |
15:54 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes, Meora. I have noticed that Add often doesn't show up when the spot is open. It's only when you try to ass the SECOND thing to that spot that Add appears. |
15:55 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
TU for the HUD tips. |
15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
um...*add |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
At least we had Friday. I don't know if any has been taken since. |
15:55 |
Larkylouz |
:^) |
15:56 |
Gronk Seriman |
I was asked if I was going to use my spot. I said I didn't know I had a spot!. I gave up my spot. |
15:57 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "One addition we'll add to the scripts for the next iteration will be relinquishing unused spots". |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
So people will have to put down at least a placeholder prim. |
15:58 |
Stela Nokt (stelanokt) |
I have a SL question. How much community & relationship happens here? |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
But with the attendance, it has been a success so far, so I think we can count on a second iteration of the contest later. |
15:59 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, that can run the gamut. |
15:59 |
Larkylouz |
Two Caledon residents who met in SL, had a RL marriage last week. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
Ah, she dropped offline. So we can probably delay any answers to the general chat outside after. |
16:00 |
Tali Rosca |
We're about out of time by now. |
16:00 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Deans. |
16:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
16:01 |
Meora (menchor) |
as always learned something |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
So unless there are any last minute comments, let us adjourn, and take it to more informal chat. |
16:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks you all. |
16:01 |
Tali Rosca |
WB, Stela. The official QA is over, but we can gather outside and talk further. |
