Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2014-01-05
15:01 | Tali Rosca | Greetings and welcome to a new year in Caledon. |
15:01 | Tali Rosca | This is the weekly QA with the deans of Oxbridge, where we will take questions about Oxbridge, Caledon or SL-related topics, and do our best to answer them. |
15:01 | Tali Rosca | We each have our area of expertise, as you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php, so we may pitch in at different times. |
15:01 | Tali Rosca | -Though, of course, we're also known to have an opinion on everything, just on principle. |
15:02 | Tali Rosca | So, any questions? |
15:03 | Meora (menchor) | anyone have any idea when the mesh clothing update will go live? |
15:03 | Tali Rosca | Fitted mesh? |
15:03 | Meora (menchor) | yes |
15:04 | Tali Rosca | There's no date announced for that. My guess is that it's a handful of weeks away, as all the updates which have been on hold during the no-change Christmas period are released. |
15:05 | Sauce Sorrowman | what exactly are theyt adding that wasn't there before? bosom support? |
15:05 | Tali Rosca | Officially supporting collision rigging. |
15:06 | Tali Rosca | And yes, they have added 7 new bones. |
15:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That and bottom bones. |
15:06 | Sauce Sorrowman | so will old liquid mesh stuff still work? |
15:06 | Tali Rosca | I was lectured hard by one person about how that was *certainly* not what they were doing; they had added a lot more, and the system will be *much* more precise than Liquid. |
15:06 | Sauce Sorrowman | hmm |
15:07 | Tali Rosca | The person could not take the time to tell me what was *actually* done, though, and it contradicts everything I have heard about it. |
15:07 | Tali Rosca | Including the wiki page about it. |
15:07 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Hearsay, then? |
15:07 | Tali Rosca | http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh/Rigging_Fitted_Mesh |
15:08 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And, if these are collision volume bones, too much precisions wouldn't be good. |
15:08 | Tali Rosca | I see no reason why Liquid/RedRigged mesh should not continue to work. |
15:08 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Red Poly did, at one point, propose an entire new set of bones. |
15:08 | Tali Rosca | To my knowledge, the existing collision bones remain as is. |
15:09 | Meora (menchor) | the video I saw also had it adjusting to the fat and muscle sliders |
15:09 | Tali Rosca | LL has not been wildly forthcoming with details, though, leaving people to read the code patches and black-box reverse engineer what happens at upload. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | The fat and muscle sliders affect the collision bones; the rough, physical shape of your avatar. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | And in turn, you rig clothes to these collision bones, so it reacts to the *volume* of them, as well as to the length of the "normal" bones. |
15:12 | Tali Rosca | That is why I believe that the clothes will adjust to that approximation of your avatar shape, just like Liquid does currently. |
15:13 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The best likelihood being that they've add a few more collision bones to catch breast and butt settings. |
15:14 | Larkylouz | Sounds uncomfortable! |
15:14 | Larkylouz apologizes for being late.
15:14 | Tali Rosca | Specifically: BUTT LEFT_PEC RIGHT_PEC LEFT_HANDLE RIGHT_HANDLE LOWER_BACK UPPER_BACK |
15:14 | Ravelli Ormstein | Hello Professor Larkylouz |
15:14 | Larkylouz | Greetings, everyone. Dean Ormstein. |
15:14 | Tali Rosca | With BUTT, LEFT_PEC and RIGHT_PEC being affected by physics. |
15:15 | Meora (menchor) | hi Larky |
15:16 | Larkylouz | Hey Meora |
15:16 | Satanico Marquis | Larky, Hi |
15:16 | Tali Rosca | Potentially, those four other new bones add more detail than the current collision volumes can alone. |
15:17 | Tali Rosca | (But they are collision bones themselves, working in the same way as the current) |
15:19 | Sauce Sorrowman coughs *contest*
15:19 | Red Quixote | ;P |
15:19 | Tali Rosca laughs. "I think Sauce has a comment."
15:19 | Sauce Sorrowman | if anyone is interested in participating in a building contest, there is one running for the month in Oxbridge Village |
15:20 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Not that he contests the above ... |
15:20 | Sauce Sorrowman | details obtained from the poster on the wall next to the timetable |
15:20 | Sauce Sorrowman | Snowblind |
15:20 | Marion Questi | How exciting! |
15:20 | Tali Rosca | The "Snowblind" building contest. 50 prims, 5x5x5 meter, go wild with handy equipment for a polar expedition or similar snow survival. |
15:20 | Sauce Sorrowman | room for 12 contestants and we have 6 registered, so there's still space |
15:21 | Marion Questi | I suggest you flog it again in COUG and ISC. |
15:21 | Sauce Sorrowman | there's a notecard in the poster with the rules and timeframes etc |
15:22 | Tali Rosca | Prizes sponsored by Grim Bros, Lassitude & Ennui, and Precious Liddell. |
15:22 | Sauce Sorrowman | oh yes, prizes, forgot we had those :P |
15:22 | Tali Rosca | We do. It's a *real* contest! |
15:23 | Ravelli Ormstein | i do see this note card now the first time, was it included in the box you had sent via group notice? |
15:23 | Sauce Sorrowman | though to be honest, most people do these for the bragging rights |
15:23 | Marion Questi | Well done lining up the sponsors. |
15:23 | Tali Rosca nods. "The notecard should be in the poster included in the second announcement."
15:24 | Sauce Sorrowman | the idea is to have an event that people can meet up over and discuss building and creativity. |
15:24 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | (Notes the arrival of Mr. Serapis) |
15:24 | Jorge Serapis | *waves disceetly* |
15:24 | Sauce Sorrowman | a melting pot of inspiration :) |
15:24 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | It's a good idea Sauce. |
15:24 | Sauce Sorrowman tips cap to Mr. Serapis
15:24 | Sauce Sorrowman realises he's not wearing a cap and tugs forelock instead.
15:25 | Martini Discovolante | hello Mr Jorges! |
15:25 | Tali Rosca | There will be a public vote for the winner at the end. |
15:25 | Tali Rosca | And I certainly hope the builders will talk about their builds. |
15:25 | Brianna Nitely (redheadedirishgirl.brianna) | I'm an amateur builder. On the snowblind card, what does it mean by "no physical builds"? |
15:26 | Sauce Sorrowman | just that the builds do not have physical prims in them. phyics is a property you can enable in prims so that they become affected by gravity and collisions etc |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A vehicle can be physical, having properties of momentum, acceleration, .... |
15:26 | Marion Questi | An object that has "physics" has mass...and places a strain on the sim. This is required for vehicles...but not usually for ordinary object.s |
15:27 | Brianna Nitely (redheadedirishgirl.brianna) | gotcha, thanks |
15:27 | Sauce Sorrowman | the rule is there to stop the contest turn into a maelstrom of bouncing prims |
15:27 | Sauce Sorrowman | :) |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | And in general to go easy on the sim resources. |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | You can still script some movement if it is necessary for the build; just not with the simulated physics system. |
15:28 | Tali Rosca | (Which really is wildly unstable for such use anyway) |
15:29 | Sauce Sorrowman | so that's the plug out of the way - join the contest! |
15:29 | Tali Rosca | And spread the word. |
15:29 | Tali Rosca | The primary purpose is to make Oxbridge the center of some activity. |
15:30 | Martini Discovolante | and get people building! |
15:31 | Brianna Nitely (redheadedirishgirl.brianna) | are we allowed to use other's scripts, or must that be our own as well? |
15:31 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | One reason I noted that Mr. Serapis was here came up last week --- concerning the disappearance of Caledon Sound and the effect of that on the CAT system. |
15:32 | Tali Rosca | As long as the script is not the primary part of what makes the build unique, I'd say you can use other's scripts. Sauce? |
15:32 | Jorge Serapis | If I may, the whole of the CAT needs to be e configured. I hav a possible scripter. I'm just waiting for the all clear that the new national borders hav settled down. |
15:32 | Sauce Sorrowman | agreed |
15:33 | Tali Rosca | (Similarly, you can use off-the-shelf sculpt or mesh parts as long as they are just a detail in your build) |
15:33 | Sauce Sorrowman | as long as the bulk is yours :) |
15:33 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Any estimated time-frame to have that CAT reconfigure done? |
15:34 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | (roughly) |
15:34 | Satanico Marquis | I'm sure the new national borders will settöe soon - whatever that could mean |
15:34 | Jorge Serapis | TBH, ni. IDally, I'd like to say end of February. |
15:34 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Nods. Thank you. |
15:34 | Jorge Serapis | The only route not affected is Sumie K's. All the others, including the submarines need to be ejigged. |
15:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The CATs and submarines are definitely part of the "character" of Caledon. Much appreciated. |
15:35 | Satanico Marquis | Folks, seriously - are you talking to yourself, or to the audience? |
15:36 | Satanico Marquis | YEAHHH !!! Cmore submarines !! |
15:36 | Jorge Serapis | I was answeing the Dean's inquiry, I believe/ |
15:36 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | Indeed. Thank you, Jorge, I am sure you are doing your best. |
15:36 | Martini Discovolante | thsi question concerns all of caledon, Mr Marquis |
15:36 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Ask a question and find out... |
15:37 | Tali Rosca | The CAT system is fairly well known in Caledon. |
15:37 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Instead of whining. |
15:37 | Meora (menchor) | I love the airships, is there a route map going to be available for the submarines? |
15:37 | Sauce Sorrowman | I think he left |
15:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Given that Mr. Serapis is part of the audience and not always here. The audience. |
15:37 | Jorge Serapis | It's in the works. :-) |
15:37 | Meora (menchor) | thank you |
15:38 | Jorge Serapis | Some stops might be closed to consolidate the routes... |
15:38 | Sauce Sorrowman must slip away
15:38 | Sauce Sorrowman | goodnight all |
15:38 | Martini Discovolante | night Prof Sorrowman |
15:38 | Red Quixote | nite Sauce |
15:38 | Ravelli Ormstein | Ade Sauce |
15:38 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Be seeing you |
15:38 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | Night Sauce. Good to see you. |
15:38 | Jorge Serapis | ... and as I said, the subs also need etooling. |
15:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Goodnight, Sauce. Thanks for the update on the contest. |
15:39 | Tali Rosca | Any other topics? (Or clarifications needed) |
15:40 | Jorge Serapis | What is the average velocity of an unladen swallow? |
15:41 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | grins |
15:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | ;) European or African? |
15:41 | Jorge Serapis | (You know I had to get the question in.) |
15:41 | Tali Rosca | Depends on whether it has been rail accelerated by one of our *cough* scientists. |
15:41 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | And Sauce and his Monty Python weight just left... |
15:42 | Martini Discovolante | grat! |
15:43 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Did we mention the build contest being next to the chat circle in Village? |
15:43 | Larkylouz | Silly question, I know. How do autoreturns affect this contest? |
15:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | We also placed one of our Oxbridge donation medallions there for anyone who might feel so inspired. |
15:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It's on its own group parcel. |
15:44 | Tali Rosca | It doesn't. The autoreturn is turned off in the parcel. |
15:44 | Tali Rosca | Instead, return is handled by a script. (Which rather aggressively returns non-contestants' prims). |
15:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | So I noticed when I tried to rez the medallion actually on that parcel. |
15:45 | Martini Discovolante | ouch! |
15:45 | Tali Rosca | -As well as disqualifying and return people's prims if they go over the prim limit. |
15:46 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | A very smart script! |
15:46 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Another reason for not allowing physical objects. |
15:46 | Jorge Serapis | Interesting. I was unde the ipression only live avatars can eturn items. |
15:47 | Tali Rosca | No. It is a *fairly* new LSL command. |
15:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | When an object actually turns physical, a size dependent penalty factor is applied. |
15:47 | Tali Rosca | http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlReturnObjectsByOwner and http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlReturnObjectsByID |
15:48 | Tali Rosca | It has some quirky behavior about what it can return depending on who owns it, which left Sauce scratching his head for a little while before we got the system worked out with deeding. |
15:48 | Jorge Serapis | Well, pinch my cheeks and bedazzle my vajayjay... |
15:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There may be a disadvantage in disqualifying on the prim limit too quickly. Some things require manually linking and then setting nonroot prims to "physics type none" to reduce effective prims. |
15:49 | Tali Rosca | You get a warning and some minutes to correct it before you're disqualified. |
15:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | kk That should suffice. |
15:50 | Larkylouz nods. Thank yuou
15:50 | Larkylouz | *you |
15:52 | Tali Rosca | Any other questions here at the end? |
15:53 | Brianna Nitely (redheadedirishgirl.brianna) | nothing from me, thanks |
15:54 | Brianna Nitely (redheadedirishgirl.brianna) | Rl calls, must leave... |
15:54 | Tali Rosca | I don't think I have any other comments to throw in either. |
15:54 | Meora (menchor) | goodnight |
15:54 | Tali Rosca | Christmas is always a quiet time in SL, and all updates have been on hold, too. |
15:54 | Larkylouz | Thank you, Deans. |
15:54 | Tali Rosca | In turn, that should give us a steady stream of updates in the coming weeks. |
15:55 | ArchDuchess of Muscles (jayleden.miles) | Fun Fun! |
15:55 | Tali Rosca | ...but that will likely be good topics for the next QAs. |
15:55 | Tali Rosca | So let us adjourn now. |
15:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thank you all. |
15:56 | Meora (menchor) | thank you deans that was very informative |
15:56 | Jorge Serapis | BRAVO!!!!!! |
15:56 | Jorge Serapis | ***** APPPPPPPLLLLAAAUUUSSSSEEEEEEE*********** |
15:56 | Jorge Serapis | .;:+*'`'* APPPPPPPLLLLAAAUUUSSSSEEEEEEE *'`'*+:;. |
15:56 | Jorge Serapis | ?~~?~~APPLAUSE~~?~~? |
15:56 | Ravelli Ormstein | good night all, thanks for coming |
15:57 | Tali Rosca | As usual, next week, same cat-time, same cat-channel. |
15:57 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Okay. bedtime for me |
15:57 | Martini Discovolante | night Mr EB! |
15:57 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As always, thanks for staying up, Mr. Elfbiter. |
