Hi everyone! |
15:00 |
Niki Listern |
hello |
15:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome one and all. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Hello |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Let us wait a minute or two for any late-comers. |
15:02 |
Dicer Sirnah |
I turned on Voice; are we in Voice? |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Text. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Greetings, and welcome to the weekly QA with the deans of Oxbridge. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
By now, most of you probably know the format, but this is where you have the chance to pick the brains of the Oxbridge deans about the going-ons in Oxbridge in particular, and Caledon and Second Life at large. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Each dean has their own area of expertise, which you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
We'll do our best to answer any questions you may have. |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
So who'll open the show? Any questions? |
15:05 |
Tali Rosca |
A quiet night, it seems. So I'll broaden it a little and ask, any news to share? |
15:05 |
Larkylouz |
Seems to be a flaky world this afternoon. I'm not getting things to work at all! (My personal rant) |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, Professor Larkylouz has run her first photography class this week. |
15:06 |
Marion Questi |
Congratulations Professor! |
15:06 |
Tali Rosca |
Great. I was, indeed, about to ask how the new classes were coming along. |
15:06 |
Martini Discovolante |
me neither , Larky-- everythign takes a long time |
15:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(nudges the professor to update her role tag) |
15:07 |
|
Larkylouz likes going undercover ;^) |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Dean Questi |
15:07 |
Marion Questi |
I suppose that means the Attendance system needs an update too.... |
15:07 |
Larkylouz |
Attendance system? |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
RL has finally left me a little time time to breathe, so I may get around to doing an update for the code for that. |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There is a class tracking system. |
15:08 |
Marion Questi |
Big Data is watching you now, Miss Louz! |
15:08 |
Larkylouz |
OMG. Even more reason to go undercover! |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The schedule is current as to teachers and classes. |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Bon McLeod and Lucien Brentano are both not teaching photography now. |
15:09 |
Martini Discovolante |
Larky scared em off? |
15:09 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Prof Larky has both taken over one of the sessions and updated the material. |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That class is now Thursdays at 5pm. |
15:10 |
Larkylouz |
I'm also subbing for Beth Cooper-Pentewyn, at least in the short term. |
15:10 |
Martini Discovolante |
:) |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
It may be a little too early to say much, but I can also tease that some work is going on about an Oxbridge-related event. |
15:10 |
Marion Questi |
Let us all welcome Her Lioness, the Vicereine. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Are you going to do that for December and/or January (Beth is taking a sabbatical)? |
15:11 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Mew, dahlinks. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
Greetings, your mewjesty. |
15:11 |
Larkylouz |
Greetings, Vicereine |
15:11 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Mewjesty, that's a new one. :) |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Welcome, Vicerine. |
15:11 |
|
Martini Discovolante curtsies... welcome Your Glory! |
15:11 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Don't let me overrun the panel. |
15:12 |
Martini Discovolante |
hello Ayelee |
15:12 |
Marion Questi |
Please take a seat Miss Ayeeleem. |
15:12 |
Martini Discovolante |

15:13 |
Larkylouz |
Hola Ayeeleem. |
15:13 |
Martini Discovolante |
if you would like ot join us. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other going-ons in Oxbridge? |
15:14 |
Larkylouz Resident |
Ayeeleem, bienvenida. Si desea unirse a nosotros, por favor, subir y bajar del escenario y haga clic derecho en un banco vacío. Elija 'siéntate aquí ". |
15:15 |
Martini Discovolante |
if anyone would like a pie, please copy this one.... it has a real recipe in the contents tab :) :) |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
Otherwise, the big news of the week is probably that LL, quite out of the blue, announced support for mesh deformation. |
15:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Whoa! I'd missed that. That will be a big one for clothes designers (and wearers). |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
They are *not* using Qarl's deformer code. |
15:17 |
Martini Discovolante |
what are the implications to the average av? |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That was my next question. ;) |
15:17 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Bouncy boob mesh. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
They chose instead to go with a variant of the "Liquid Mesh/RedRig" style. |
15:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It means that one doesn't need to wear a "standard size" and an alpha mask to keep from poking through. |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
But they are adding extra bones to the avatar skeleton. |
15:18 |
Martini Discovolante |
to all of us? |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
For the average wearer (and in particular, for the not-so-average wearer), it means that mesh will fit a *lot* better. |
15:18 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
If I may? |
15:18 |
|
Larkylouz slides bonelessly to the floor. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
Stretching with the *thickness* of your limbs and body, too, and not just with the *length. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
For the creators, it adds quite a bit more work. |
15:19 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Will there be more adjustments to the avatar shape in the Appearance menu? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The underlying issue has been that rigged mesh is not "stretchable", since it sizes by conformation to joint positions. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
No. The extra bones are there to follow some moving parts of your body which otherwise do not have a bone you can rig clothes to. |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And rigged mesh has only known about bones, not shape. |
15:20 |
Martini Discovolante |
liek a stomach bone? |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
(I.e., bouncy) |
15:21 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
My understanding is they're using the existing collision bones used in avatar physics and slider sizes. The neck bone already works more or less the way these will. This also means, rigging vertices to these extra bones will mean avatar physics will work on these as well as size sliders. |
15:21 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "The extra bones are for the physics bouncing". |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
As I said, the basic system, rigging to the collision bones, is what the Liquid Mesh already uses. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I recall from when they were still regularly posting meeting notes that this had been tried, but without the extra bones or actual support. |
15:22 |
Dicer Sirnah |
SO you're saying we'll be able to have b... OK I'm not saying it. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
It may create some glitches if you're wearing clothes made with those extra bones, and view it in a client which does not have those bones. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
But the update to include the bones is simply, and it's expected to be adopted very fast once finalized. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
*simple |
15:23 |
Dicer Sirnah |
All this stuff sounds very interesting, but I have no idea what it will really mean to me. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
Better fitting clothes. |
15:24 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Interesting and hilarious deformationson details like pockets and zippers as well, but that's no different than what we've always had with system clothing. |
15:24 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Fitting clothes for non-hunk body types |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
That's the very short version, which most people will ever have to relate to. |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
The specifics is mostly something creators will have to deal with. |
15:25 |
Tali Rosca |
It is somewhat interesting, however, because the announcement came pretty much entirely out of the blue, after a long, strained and controversial history of the mesh deformation project. |
15:26 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Sometimes I feel like most content creation happens outside of SL, now. Using tools that are not in-world. Are there still people doing in-world creation? (And classes and demand for that?) |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If it works, then one won't need the alpha mask to make you invisible under the clothes. |
15:26 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Clothing of course has always been out-of-world |
15:26 |
Phrynne |
Hats are not. |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
Dicer, that balance is always a heated debate. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
As the sheer technical possibilities improve, so does the need for complicated tools. |
15:27 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There are times when prims shapes are entirely adequate. |
15:28 |
Martini Discovolante |
and near anyone can learn to build things with inworld tools. |
15:28 |
Martini Discovolante |
creation makes SL a bit more fun for many people. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
Personally, I am of the opinion that it doesn't make sense for LL to use effort on duplicating tools which also exist in well-understood and supported versions, so for the complicated (and standardized) technical options, it makes sense to use existing, off-world tools. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
It's worth remembering, though, that that has essentially always been the case. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
The detail parts are done in offworld programs like QAvimator, Poser, Photoshop and Blender, and the end result is assembled inworld. |
15:31 |
Niki Listern |
I am going to be teaching Crocheting classes in the RL for the first time. I am so nervous |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
But whether it makes it difficult to just start playing around and "get your feet wet" is always a balance and an open debate. |
15:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It gets easier, Miss Niki. |
15:32 |
Niki Listern |
really |
15:33 |
Dicer Sirnah |
"Everyone please point into your lap and rez a ball of yarn. Oh, wait. That won't work out here. Everyone please take your yarn out of the supplies box under your chair...." |
15:33 |
Martini Discovolante |
:) |
15:33 |
Tali Rosca |
Rezzing a ball of yarn here could get... distracting :-) |
15:34 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
*mew* |
15:34 |
Dicer Sirnah |
lol |
15:34 |
Niki Listern |
:D |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Almost as distracting as rezzing catnip. |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions? (Or comments on the previous). |
15:37 |
Dicer Sirnah |
I am amazed that SL is still around. And they're actively doing development on it! |
15:37 |
Tali Rosca |
So are a lot of people. |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
SL has been declared dead at least once per year of existence. |
15:38 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Here is a question. |
15:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They've added mesh, pathfinding, materials, and now an improvement to mesh. |
15:38 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Some people are upset about the changes to the TOS and say all kinds of things about it. What was it really about it? |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
Ohboy |
15:39 |
|
Kamilah Hauptmann Big Grin. |
15:39 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
HEre we go again.... |

15:40 |

Dean Rosca may have further comments on this, but it has been discussed at length in recent meetings. The transcripts are here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:40 |

Kamilah Hauptmann gets out a variety of vampire hunting implements including a crossbow and a truck winch. |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
Depending on who you ask: A sloppily worded cover-our-asses, or a rights grab to (ab)use content if they see a good idea and want to use it. |
15:40 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
*alerts his security automatons* |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
The updated ToS contains some *incredibly* broad license grants to LL. |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
And there some (decently successful) pressure on LL to revise it to better reflect what they have semi-officially stated they *actually* mean. |
15:42 |
Tali Rosca |
...I think that was the diplomatic version of it. |
15:43 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
The hilairous thing about that is ll the corporate logos that were uploaded back in 2006-7. Nissan would not be amused. |
15:43 |
|
Marion Questi laughs. "Good point" |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
There are *so* many problematic things from a purely legal/logical point, before even going into the intentions. |
15:44 |
Dicer Sirnah |
I don't think they can retroactively change the terms regarding content. |
15:44 |
Phrynne |
not to mention the universities that have locations here. |
15:44 |
Martini Discovolante |
or mercedes, or the Gap, etcetcetc. |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
They are not. They are asking *you* to license all your inventory. |
15:44 |
Martini Discovolante |
the ToS is too flabby to be upheld. |
15:45 |
Kamilah Hauptmann |
Ford Motor Co's legal letter to Linden Lab: "LoL. No." |
15:47 |
Tali Rosca |
LL has answer with another letter recently, re-stating that they are looking at possibly revising the wording, and asking for patience as the legalities around all their platforms is not entirely trivial to sort out. |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
It's still fairly non-committal, and conceivably, they *could* simply be stalling, waiting for people to wear themselves out. |
15:48 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Read; they have to hire another lawyer. |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
But in fairness, it *does* take time to rewrite legal documents. |
15:49 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Is anyone here a lawyer? |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
How much time you think is reasonable is then up to your own judgment. |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
The UCCSL group, which is the most active and vocal, has some lawyers, and has done a panel discussion with them. |
15:52 |
Tali Rosca |
As mentioned, you can check the transcripts of the previous QAs for a fair bit of discussion about it. |

15:55 |
Larkylouz |
Good evening, Miss Listern |
15:55 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Bon appetite |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions/topics we should get around to before we end the session? |
15:55 |
Larkylouz |
Wow, that went by quickly! |
15:55 |
Dicer Sirnah |
Well, two things. First, the TOS seems ... problematic... in many ways. Second, I don't know that terms of things like Facebook that might be similar in some ways, have been tested much (or at all) in court. So what it really all means will probably be sorted out right after everything else about SL gets sorted out. (Which is to say, my children might see the end of it when they grow up....) :) |
15:55 |
Meora (menchor) |
anyone discuss the mesh deformer? |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yep. It will be in the transcripts. |
15:56 |
Meora (menchor) |
ty |
15:56 |
Larkylouz |
Meora, I'll copy what was said and IM you. |
15:56 |
Tali Rosca |
We did bring it up, yes; the newly announced collision rigging. |
15:56 |
Meora (menchor) |
thank you |
15:57 |
Dicer Sirnah |
I have heard people on the forums claiming things about Tiny Empires. Is there any news about that? They say it's a bot invasion or something. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
I know some use bots to boost their rating in that game, but I don't know much about it, really.. |
15:59 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Ah. forums. The favorite place of the panic mongers... |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
Anybody else have anything to say on that? |
16:00 |
Tali Rosca |
(I *did* once have Snow White and the seven dwarves camping on the bottom of the sea in Burroughs. That was fairly surreal). |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thanks you all for coming. |
16:00 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Deans. |
