15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
Welcome to this week's QA. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
I feel we should take a moment to honor a real-life legend who died today. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
I suggest that we observe several minutes of absolute non-silence and trippy rock'n'roll in honor of Lou Reed. |
15:00 |
Tali Rosca |
So put on your best album and turn it up high, as background music to this QA. |
15:01 |
Gronk Seriman |
Oh wow! |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
So, welcome to the weekly Q&A, where the deans of Oxbridge will do their best to answer question about Oxbridge, Caledon and Second Life in general. |
15:01 |
Tali Rosca |
Each have their specialty and area of responsibility, which you can see here: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:02 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Lou Reed said "One chord is fine. Two chords is pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz."[ |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
I think that's it for the introduction, so let's launch straight into it. |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
Any questions? |
15:02 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
ohoh, we are on winter time!? |
15:02 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello all |
15:02 |
Tali Rosca |
We are on SL time. |
15:03 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes, that means the QA is at a new time for us Europeans this week, as we change to standard time a week earlier than the US. |
15:03 |
James MacCloude (mac6572) |
day light savings time doesn't end till next week |
15:04 |
Gronk Seriman |
I always forget...does SL follow US Daylight saving time standards? |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
So for the next week, any cross-Atlantic contacts you have will be slightly off their normal schedule. |
15:04 |
Marion Questi |
Yes.. SL follows US Pacific time |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. SLT is whatever the current Pacific time is. |
15:05 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah.. Thank you. |
15:06 |
Larkylurker (larkylouz) |
It doesn't change until next week. |
15:06 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have a complaint that I think nobody here can deal with, but might know the right person to fix it.... |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Proceed, Miss Gronk. |
15:07 |
Gronk Seriman |
If you follow the railroad tracks east out of Oxbridge Village into that inviting, dark tunnel, you WILL fall through the sidewalk. |
15:08 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
oh, yes, that happens to me often |
15:08 |
mollie Tison |
hello |
15:08 |
Gronk Seriman |
...and into a pool of water that has no exit. |
15:08 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello Miss Tison |
15:08 |
Gronk Seriman |
There is no reason for that pool to even be there@ |
15:08 |
55s ETC (55aaa.danick) |
ok |
15:08 |
55s ETC (55aaa.danick) |
greetings ..is this session in voice |
15:08 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No. Local chat. |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
A quick welcome to the newcomers. This is the weekly QA, where the deans of Oxbridge try to answer Caledon- and SL-related questions to the best of their ability. |
15:09 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
we are text only, Mr Danick |
15:09 |
55s ETC (55aaa.danick) |
oks |
15:09 |
Marion Questi |
In Kintyre? |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes, right at the border, before you enter the tunnel. |
15:09 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
she refers to the spot behind the fencing club: Caledon Oxbridge Village (255,172,31) |
15:09 |
Marion Questi |
Is this a sim crossing issue? |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If it's a tunnel, then the actual land is likely below the nominal water table. |
15:10 |
Tali Rosca |
Who owns the land there? Or is it commonwealth? |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
Yes it is. But it's made worse by the pool of water that really has no reason to be there. |
15:10 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
it was owned by True Irelund i think. don't know if she is still involved there |
15:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The sim recently changed owners. |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I'm forgetting who the new owner is. |
15:11 |
Marion Questi |
I can't recall either. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
If it connects to commonwealth, I can put up an invisible "glitch prim" to walk on. |
15:11 |
Gronk Seriman |
A little terraforming to make the land flat would help a lot. |
15:11 |
Tali Rosca |
Otherwise, we'll have to poke the land owner there to do that. |
15:11 |
Larkylurker (larkylouz) |
Oh, it is a woman. .... helpful, aren't I" |
15:11 |
Larkylurker (larkylouz) |
? |
15:12 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
there are some walkway prims coming together, directly at the region border |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
I mention it because it's a trap, kinda difficult to get out of, and probably distressing to any new people innocently wantering. |
15:12 |
55s ETC (55aaa.danick) |
Plz excuse us ...we may return...called away |
15:13 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk 55. |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
As long as the pool is not filled with exploding turkeys. |
15:13 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
hm, i will contact the owner, cause it is my neighbor there |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
Ravelli, you're on it, then. If you need help with commonwealth land, I think I can do it. |
15:13 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
ok! |
15:14 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
many thanks for that hint, Miss Seriman! |
15:14 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Likely the classic sim crossing nonsolid prim problem. |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
It's quite common, at least. You walk on a prim in one sim, and into the next. But you're not handed off fast enough into the next sim, so any new prim there doesn't "rise to meet your feet", so to speak, since the system don't think you're in that sim yet. |
15:18 |
Gronk Seriman |
...or if the pool was made larger so you can swim out, that would help, too. But there's no escape. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
...or if we installed turkeys there so you'd be *blown* out of it. |
15:19 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
the locomotive get stuck there as well |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
I think it's best not to drop people down there in the first place, though. |
15:19 |
Tali Rosca |
Any other questions? |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I noticed that Designing Worlds has an upcoming meeting on the TOS. http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2013/10/27/tos-changes-designing-worlds-want-your-questions/ |
15:21 |
Phrynne |
apologies; am being called away. |
15:21 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
kk tc Phrynne. |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
I saw that call, but I haven't read the specifics yet. |
15:21 |
Tali Rosca |
There has been some interesting development in the issue, though. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
Linden Lab has actually answered! |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
They re-iterate that they need the new ToS to allow them to act as agents on behalf of the creators, for possible cross-marketing between LL products. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
They *strongly* hinted that was the case in their original statement, so that is not particularly new. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
What is new, though, is that they write that they are "currently reviewing what changes could be made that would resolve the concerns of Second Life content creators, specifically protecting content creators' intellectual property ownership while permitting Linden Lab to, among other things, act as an agent of content creators (such as yourselves), licensed to sell and re-sell such content". |
15:24 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
hm, that sounds *better* |
15:25 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
LEt's hoep that that is a fortuitous development. |
15:25 |
Tali Rosca |
It'll be interesting to see what wording they come up with (if any). |
15:26 |
James MacCloude (mac6572) |
see you everyone |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
But the fact that they *do* consider a rewording is very good news to my ears. It says that they do *not* need the rights for some unknown, theorized purpose. |
15:26 |
Marion Questi |
The phrase "between LL products" is telling. I suspect they have other VW products on tap. The successor to SL perhaps....but they would like to be able to transfer some of the SL content. |
15:26 |
Gronk Seriman |
Don't most "agents" in life usually get a cut? |
15:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
they need something better.... Simply the assurance that "we'd never do that" doesn't hold legally. |
15:26 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i'm not fond of the idea to see them as my agents. at least they should limit it to LL products only |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
LL already gets a cut on the marketplace. |
15:27 |
Gronk Seriman |
True. |
15:28 |
Tali Rosca |
My take is that it will allow you to, say, sell the same mesh building both on the SL marketplace and on Desura. If that is a choice you actively make, I see no problem in it. |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
In the *very* long view, it could also allow a slow phasing over to a potential "SL 2.0" in some form, avoiding the problem of throwing everything away and starting from scratch. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
So I see good reasons for such cross marketing. The key issue is whether the rights you grant LL is sufficiently limited in scopr. |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
*scope |
15:30 |
Tali Rosca |
But that's just me dreaming, and theorizing just how it could be done, and what it could mean. |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And, also, whether the wording works for 3rd parties that sell a limited license for use to a creator. |
15:32 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "There's a coalition of scripters who have the license compatibility as a strong focus". |
15:33 |
Tali Rosca |
It often gets forgotten in the general panic of "LL can steal my content". |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And even, apart from LL, content management if they should ever sell SL. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or be bought up by a larger fish. |
15:34 |
Tali Rosca |
That is an issue as well, and probably the most realistic way content could potentially escape your control. |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't think many people realistically think LL will start selling individual items as stock resources to 3rd parties. |
15:38 |
Tali Rosca |
...I see Ravelli typing like mad. |
15:38 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
well, the time changes so much. what will be in 10 years, or in 20 years? there will come bigger changes one day, for sure. will we ever be able to understand the complexity of licenses? I guess most user of the GPL licensed software never read that license, and even the developers using that license. |
15:39 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
well, i just think, the situation could become more complex in the future |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
All the more reason to fight for "what's right" now, even if we do not think LL will actually abuse any over-broad rights. |
15:39 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yes |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
But anyway, that was to say that there has, in fact, been some development. It'll probably take a while until we hear more from LL. |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
So let us move on before we beat that horse *totally* into the ground. |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
At least it has gone beyond stonewalling. |
15:40 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
that development got triggered by the discussions and complaints of us, the users. we may not stop that in similar situations |
15:41 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yep, lets move on |
15:41 |
Tali Rosca |
...if there are any other questions. |
15:43 |
Tali Rosca |
...or we could beat on. |
15:44 |
Larkylurker (larkylouz) |
LOL Dean Tali |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
Should we call it in early, or are there any comments? |
15:45 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
that silence speaks for itself |
15:45 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Silence often signified agreement... |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
Let us adjourn, then, which will leave time for us to clear the stage for Wordsmith to perform the Dance of the Seven Veils for the remaining 15 minutes. |
15:46 |
Gronk Seriman |
Woohoo! |
15:46 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
:-) :-) :-) |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
There is a jazz even in Caledon. Rudolfo Woodget: Fifteen minutes until our live performance of Jazz Flute. Good seats still available! At the Bashful Peacock: Caledon Wellsian (217,210,23) |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Ha! |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
I think Wordsmith just volunteered to dance it there. |
15:46 |
Marion Questi |
Thank you all for coming. Good night. |
15:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans! |
