To quote Vasquez: |
15:04 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Tali, perhaps you can repeat that during the Q&A? |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
LET'S ROCK! |
15:04 |
(You) |
This is the weekly QnA with the deans of Oxbridge. Your chance to see what we can remember. |
15:04 |

Our various attributes are given at http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php (as are past transcripts). |
15:05 |

So, if anyone would like to ask the first question, or even the second question first ... |
15:07 |
Tali Rosca |
A quiet day, it seems. |
15:07 |
Martini Discovolante |
are we done? |
15:08 |
|
Ravelli Ormstein coughs slightly |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't even think there's much new on the technical side. |
15:08 |
shazunn |
meery |
15:09 |
Tali Rosca |
The last couple of updates and plans are primarily consolidation of the previous updates (like SSA). |
15:09 |
(You) |
Well, if we aren't going to talk about it, at least there's an elephant in the room. |
15:09 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have something to share.... |
15:09 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yes? |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
The translator that is given out just outside the door here.... |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Metanomics-Translator-v21/4416485 |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
Please read the reviews of this product. |
15:10 |
Gronk Seriman |
You will see a sad statement from its author. |
15:11 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
ah, that is an interesting hint |
15:12 |
Larkylouz |
I use that translator on a daily basis. What is the issue? |
15:12 |
Gronk Seriman |
The translator still works for me. But some day Google may break whatever backdoor way it works. |
15:12 |
Tali Rosca |
I must admit I've been wondering about that old version, after Google shut down the free service. |
15:12 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i thought it doesn't use Google... i will inspect that |
15:13 |
shazunn |
um when we gonna party??? |
15:13 |
shazunn |
or ROCK |
15:13 |
Tali Rosca |
Strictly speaking, that quote leads to opening fire with a minigun, which we probably do not want to do here. |
15:14 |
Martini Discovolante |
you can use your SEARCH Mr shazun, to find a place that rocks to your satisfaction. |
15:14 |
Tali Rosca |
On the translator issue, I happen to know that Hank Ramos is getting back into the translator business, restarting his "Universal translator". |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
But I don't know which translation services he uses, and if it is freely available. |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
But it may be something to look at if it turns out that the metanomics one is a no-go. |
15:15 |
shazunn |
ok hold on mr smarty pants i'm a mrs |
15:15 |
shazunn |
SO GET IT RIGHT |
15:15 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Well, metanomics.net is for sale. |
15:15 |
elfbiter Resident |
Nun, das ist metanomics.net zum Verkauf . |
15:16 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
interesting |
15:16 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
HAs been since last month |
15:17 |
Gronk Seriman |
I just brought the topic up as a "Heads Up!". Like I said, it still works fine for me. But its end may come at any time. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
But there's really no two ways about that we're living on borrowed time with the free translation services. |
15:17 |
Martini Discovolante |
will Ramos make anohter one, you said? |
15:17 |
(You) |
Good hour, Sauce. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, I chatted with him a while ago, where he said he would look into it. |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
But I have not followed up on it. |
15:18 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
hullo |
15:18 |
(You) |
The problem, of course, is having an underlying translation engine. |
15:18 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Hello Sauce |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
I was about to say, in any case, I don't know how he'll get around the actual translation service. |
15:19 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
i thought this translator make use of Bablefish or something else |
15:19 |
|
Tali Rosca nods. "But I don't think that's generally available either; is it?" |
15:19 |
Gronk Seriman |
The author clearly says he used Google. |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
Metanomics, yes. But Hank Ramos's universal translator started out with Babelfish, I think. |
15:20 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
well, the creator of the translator is Discord Shism. Wonder why he spread his translator and complain now |
15:21 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
does anyone know if TPVs calculate mesh upload cost incorrectly in the upload window? |
15:21 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
I think he complains of his translator being _sold_ |
15:21 |
Gronk Seriman |
I think he's pretty clear in his statement. He made it as a promotional item for his company. When Google changed their rules, he was toast. |
15:22 |
shazunn |
i need to step out side |
15:22 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Sauce, i have not noticed any issue in the main grid. only a difference to the beta grid |
15:22 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
He comments in the page where somebody is selling MEtanomics for lindens. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
Sauce, remember that LI cost is size dependent. That may create a difference too. |
15:22 |
Renee Caxton |
If he made it as a promotional item for some company, then he does not own the copyrights ... at least not in the US. All programming for companies is "work for hire" unless there is a specific contract otherwise |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
As for the translator, the fair thing would probably be to contact him and ask if it is ok to hand it out for free here. |
15:23 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
I uploaded a mesh to the beta grid where the LI was 2. when I uploaded it here, with the same settings, it was 13. the mesh preview window said it was the same in both contexts (1.6 or something). size wasn't changed. |
15:23 |
Renee Caxton |
That is probably why the Labs won't do anything for him |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
(With the understanding that it is not supported) |
15:23 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
good idea, Tali. i will do that soon. |
15:23 |
(You) |
I've noticed that estimates of the physics cost can be off. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
Sauce, is UV-mapped, or a "raw" test? |
15:24 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
pretty raw |
15:24 |
Tali Rosca |
Non-UV mapped mesh can supposedly throw the calculations all off, as you essentially get random values in the UV map. |
15:24 |
Larkylouz |
Please emphasize, Dean Tali, how useful a tool we find the Metatronics Translator. |
15:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
I am over my topic. Please read his statement at the link I provided. I don't want to copy -n-paste here. |
15:25 |
Tali Rosca |
Thanks for the heads-up. |
15:25 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
many thanks for sharing that with us, Miss Seriman. i will clarify that pretty soon |
15:25 |
Martini Discovolante |
crashycrashy |
15:26 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
I know TPVs don't have the Havok license to generate physics shapes. I wonder does that come into play with LI calculation |
15:26 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
Metanomics was one of the first big things impressing me when i entered SL. they had interesting events in the past. |
15:27 |
Tali Rosca |
Now that you mention it, yes, I think that should be Havok-based. Or is that only for *generating* the collision volume? |
15:27 |
(You) |
As I recall, some of them do have the Havok license. Something changed about the time they implemented pathfinding. |
15:28 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
perhaps different versions of the calculation in different viewer and server releases? |
15:28 |
(You) |
They use the Havok libraries to do the physics decomposition (analysis and simplification) |
15:29 |
Tali Rosca |
But the cost is calculated by a server roundtrip, isn't it? |
15:29 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
that might be it. I was a bit disappointed, I have to say on uploading to the main grid and having the LI multiplied by 6 |
15:29 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
during the upload the viewer calculates the costs. later, when it got uploaded, the server calculates it. |
15:29 |
(You) |
See if that's listed as download (streaming) cost or physics cost. |
15:30 |
shazunn |
ALL THE SINGLE LADIES (repeats 6x) |
15:30 |
|
Gronk Seriman copied and made a notecard of the Metanomics translator statement in question for those who can't use the link. Just ask. |
15:30 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
physics cost |
15:31 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
it's not the most optimal construction currently, this was just a quick test to see how it handled. |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
That's a harsh physics cost. |
15:31 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
it is indeed. |
15:31 |
(You) |
I had from one of the mesh meetings (before they stopped uploading the transcripts) that FS and Exodus were using Havok. |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
Are all your vertices completely planar? |
15:31 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
no, the doors are a bit of a hack job |
15:31 |
(You) |
Oh, and there's a penalty not in the upload for turning "physical". |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
Or are the walls actually a bit concave? That can really drive up physics cost. |
15:33 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
i'd imagine physics would be better if I made each wall/ceiling/floor plane as a separate mesh plane and joined them at the end, rather than hollowing out a cube |
15:34 |
Tali Rosca |
You have flipped normals at the door frame too. That shouldn't really hit *physics*, though. |
15:34 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
the doors were a quick boolean modifier hackjob |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
I don't think I've ever *not* had boolean modifiers explode in my face. |
15:35 |
|
Sauce Sorrowman grins |
15:35 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
my issue was just the difference between main and beta grids |
15:35 |
|
Sauce Sorrowman shrugs |
15:35 |
Tali Rosca |
I have to say, I've not seen such a difference myself. |
15:36 |
(You) |
Nor have I, and was just testing there this past weeks. But not with a TPV. |
15:37 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
oh well. |
15:38 |
Sauce Sorrowman |
I'll try it with the default viewer and see what's what. |
15:39 |
shazunn |
*rasies hand |
15:39 |
shazunn |
i have one question |
15:39 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
yes, Miss Shazunn? |
15:39 |
|
Sauce Sorrowman quietly heads off to make space in the sim. |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
yeees? |
15:39 |
shazunn |
not to be rude or any thing |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
of course not. |
15:39 |
shazunn |
are we almost done to a closing |
15:39 |
Martini Discovolante |
ytou are free to leave anytime you like. |
15:40 |
shazunn |
yea but i would love to stay |
15:40 |
Tali Rosca |
The QA generally runs for an hour, more or less. |
15:40 |
shazunn |
and people want me to tp them |
15:40 |
(You) |
We go for another 20 minutes. |
15:40 |
shazunn |
YAY |
15:40 |
shazunn |
also another letter |
15:40 |
(You) |
questions forthcoming. |
15:40 |
shazunn |
i mean question |
15:41 |
shazunn |
can we like put in a dating class |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
no. |
15:41 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
no no |
15:41 |
shazunn |
why not |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
we have an avatar safety class. |
15:41 |
Martini Discovolante |
your social life is up to you. |
15:41 |
(You) |
We do have a role-playing class in another 1:20 today. |
15:42 |
shazunn |
i have alot of love or dating questions like i asked miss tali she isn't a love person |
15:42 |
Martini Discovolante |
then i suggest you find a group in your SEARCH who enjoys discussion personal problems. |
15:43 |
Larkylouz |
Second Life is not a safe place to be asking such questions, Shazunn. I suggest your school counselor or your parent. |
15:43 |
shazunn |
ok |
15:43 |
(You) |
Or strategies. |
15:43 |
Larkylouz |
Or take Dean Martini's advice. |
15:43 |
shazunn |
thanks |
15:43 |
Martini Discovolante |
if you must. but Larky is right. |
15:43 |
Martini Discovolante |
the internet in any form is no place to discuss anythign personal. |
15:43 |
Martini Discovolante |
ever. |
15:43 |
shazunn |
um my sis wants me to tp her |
15:44 |
shazunn |
i'm Really sorry |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
There are many groups for various topics and interests. I'd tend to say, though, that anybody claiming to run a *school* for such things are... not worth listening to. |
15:44 |
shazunn |
*cries |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
I suggest you go outside and TP your sister and enjoy the chat circle in the village. It is a very pleasant place. |
15:44 |
Larkylouz |
Caledon Oxbridge Village (19,169,27) |
15:44 |
Martini Discovolante |
i believe she meant TP TO her. |
15:45 |
Larkylouz |
Even better! <snort> |
15:45 |
Gronk Seriman |
heehee! |
15:46 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
well, we have time for some more questions... |
15:46 |
Tali Rosca |
In a sense, I can't really fault her for wanting the answers. But the very first answer is probably that nobody has them all. |
15:47 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
LIfe is too complex for simple answers to work in every situation. |
15:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
What is the Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything? |
15:47 |
Martini Discovolante |
we are not counselors or therapists, or drama critics. it is really outside of our endeavours here. |
15:47 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
23 |
15:47 |
(You) |
Only simple answers that are useful: 1) Be nice to others. 2) Realize that not everyone abides by 1) |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
We may well be individually, but that is a personal choice, and not part of Oxbridge. |
15:48 |
Martini Discovolante |
and don't talk about Fight Club. |
15:48 |
Larkylouz |
What is Fight Club? |
15:48 |
Martini Discovolante |
ummm. i dunno. |
15:48 |
|
Larkylouz is not up on modern culture |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
...if that even qualifies as "modern" anymore. |
15:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
You were TOLD NOT to talk about it!!! |
15:48 |
Larkylouz |
LOL |
15:49 |
|
Martini Discovolante zips her giant yap |
15:50 |
|
Larkylouz can only remember "The Breakfast Club" and assumes that's different. |
15:51 |
(You) |
Another question or two? |
15:51 |
|
Gronk Seriman has a Spiky Wooden Club, but doesn't want to bring it out here either. |
15:53 |
Larkylouz |
Is this an appropriate forum for a discussion of how to approach incidents like a certain drama queen crying "sexual abuse" in COU chat? I can certainly discuss it privately later. However, some guidelines for taking serious subjects seriously in such a forum seems pertinant. |
15:53 |
Gronk Seriman |
An observation...I have noticed almost no phantom horse carriages or trains at the border here. |
15:54 |
Larkylouz |
SSB? ;^) |
15:54 |
Martini Discovolante |
,aybe it is cured. |
15:54 |
(You) |
Ahh. Merely an oversight in scheduling the same. |
15:55 |
(You) |
But, perhaps LL really has improved sim crossings. |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
SSB should have little to do with that. Though the overall Sunshine project may have helped. |
15:55 |
Gronk Seriman |
That's what I was wondering. |
15:55 |
Larkylouz |
I haven't fallen through the sandbox sim crossing in quite a while. I was joking about the SSB comment! |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, the phantom pileup has less to do with the actual *sim* crossings, and more to do with your client not getting/reacting to the delete message. |
15:56 |
Tali Rosca |
LL has been doing a lot of work in shoring up the sim/client communication, so I can see that helping. |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
They also did some good work on sim crossings, but that's a while back, and I think that would primarily be relevant for avatar crossings. |
15:57 |
Gronk Seriman |
Gah! That was my hobby. Dismissing the Phantoms. Oh well! |
15:57 |
|
Gronk Seriman smiles |
15:57 |
Tali Rosca |
The fact that you *could* dismiss them (with a click) hints that it was a client problem; not a server problem. |
15:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ah! |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
So my money is in the general "Sunshine" improvements, making sure massages are not lost. |
15:58 |
Tali Rosca |
*messages. |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
...Quite a difference... |
15:59 |
Gronk Seriman |
I hate it when I lose a massage. *grins* |
15:59 |
Tali Rosca |
That, however, is not a technical problem. |
16:00 |
Gronk Seriman |
Ho doubt! |
16:00 |
(You) |
The medium is the massage? |
16:01 |
(You) |
It's 4pm SLT.... Thank all for coming. |
16:01 |
(You) |
and participating. |
16:01 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you Deans and Gronk ;^) |
16:02 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you Deans! And Larky! |
16:02 |
Martini Discovolante |
thank you all for coming. :) lively a s usual. |
16:02 |
Ravelli Ormstein |
many thanks to everyone, hope to see you back next week or before |
