Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2013-08-04
15:01 | Marion Questi | Welcome everyone! |
15:01 | Marion Questi | This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. On the Oxbridge website you can find a list of all the Deans with summaries of their respective areas of responsibility, : http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:01 | Larkylouz | Unless they're kittehs, Dean Tali |
15:01 | Tali Rosca | That's non-human people. Like dolphins. |
15:01 | Marion Questi | Who would like to aks the first question? |
15:01 | Larkylouz | :^) |
15:02 | Larkylouz raises her hand. "I have one."
15:02 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Miss Larky? |
15:03 | Larkylouz | When lag is bad, my camera position arrows often do not respond, making photography even more difficult. I know about Ctrl + O and 9; any other ideas? |
15:03 | Marion Questi | Do you know how to move the camera with the arrow keys? |
15:03 | Tali Rosca | Chording springs to mind; alt-clicking your target and moving the camera that way. |
15:04 | Ruth (moabite) | Using the mouse, that is. |
15:04 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | ctrl 0 and 9? |
15:05 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | nevermind, guess I will just try that |
15:05 | Larkylouz | I do use the arrow keys. Alt + click centers around where one clicks, which is bad for photography. I do try to work around that, by clicking to one side. |
15:05 | Larkylouz | Ctrl + 0 Moves in; Ctrl + 9 resets. |
15:06 | Dan (dan7x7) | i use alt left mouse key |
15:06 | Marion Questi | The mouse wheel also moves you in and out. |
15:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There's also the rotate and pan features |
15:06 | Tali Rosca | Yeah, especially if you use depth of field, alt-clicking is not suitable, but otherwise you can usually catch something else to latch on to and adjust the camera that way, |
15:06 | Larkylouz | I have a touchpad. |
15:06 | Tali Rosca | Oh, yeah, in that case, chording is a pain. |
15:06 | Ravelli Ormstein | i use ALT+LMB for quick camming, but ALT + Arrow Keys for more accurate camming when i already set a spot to look at |
15:07 | Larkylouz | Thank you. Doesn't sound like there's anything I haven't tried. LMB? |
15:07 | Tali Rosca | Can you strafe the camera? |
15:07 | Larkylouz | the letters in succession. |
15:07 | Ravelli Ormstein | Left Mouse Button = LMB |
15:07 | Larkylouz | ? |
15:07 | Larkylouz | Yes, thank you, Dean Ormstein. I'm not familiar with 'strafe' in this context. |
15:08 | Tali Rosca | Moving sideways while still looking the same way. |
15:08 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | ctrl+alt+LMB for rotating |
15:08 | Marion Questi | You need a Space Navigator for straffing |
15:08 | Tali Rosca | You can move your *avatar* that way, but I don't think you can move the *camera* that way with any button combinations. |
15:08 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | ctrl+alt+arrow keys also work. |
15:08 | Larkylouz | As my viewer crashes if I up the graphics slider past the the lowest, I've been using FS, but that is very lagger. |
15:08 | Larkylouz | Thank you, Dean Jarvinen. I will try that. |
15:09 | Larkylouz | *laggy. |
15:09 | Dan (dan7x7) | raises hand |
15:09 | Larkylouz | Thank you, all. |
15:09 | Marion Questi | Yes, Mr Dan? |
15:09 | Dan (dan7x7) | are their better land terraforming tools |
15:09 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | With a USB port, a wireless mouse can also be added, even to a laptop. |
15:09 | Dan (dan7x7) | i need more refined tools |
15:09 | Dan (dan7x7) | more detail |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | Your problem is probably not really the *tools* for that. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | The SL terrain is quite low-detail when it comes to control points. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | In fact, you only have a control point per meter. |
15:10 | Marion Questi | There is a limit to how much "detail" you can get. |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | Everything else is interpolated. |
15:10 | Dan (dan7x7) | is it a 1 meter square |
15:10 | Tali Rosca | Think of it as more of a point. |
15:11 | Tali Rosca | And the area between the points are interpolated to lead up to that point. |
15:11 | Dan (dan7x7) | aww that makes sense |
15:11 | Martini Discovolante | the best practice for detail is easy does it... tap-tap-tap! |
15:11 | Dan (dan7x7) | lol and a small brush |
15:11 | Dan (dan7x7) | ty |
15:11 | Tali Rosca | SL does some screwy waveform interpolation, so it often *looks* like you have more control points. |
15:12 | Tali Rosca | It's not a linear interpolation between the points. |
15:12 | Dan (dan7x7) | oh ok |
15:12 | Tali Rosca | So if you, say, raise a very sharp spike, the area around it may, in fact, dip into a moat. |
15:12 | Dan (dan7x7) | yes that kills me lol |
15:12 | Dan (dan7x7) | hard to get rid of those spikes |
15:13 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Points are not independent, since the interpolation connects them. Move one and adjacent ones move. |
15:13 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There are ways to adjust terrain with scripting. |
15:13 | Marion Questi | It is possible to get very sharp demarkations only at property boundaries. |
15:14 | Dan (dan7x7) | are the corners the points when you select the land to edit |
15:14 | Dan (dan7x7) | or the center of the square |
15:14 | Tali Rosca | I honestly can't remember. The control points are on every even meter. |
15:15 | Tali Rosca | (With some trickery on the 256th, which is also the 0th of the next sim) |
15:15 | Dan (dan7x7) | oh ever other one |
15:15 | Dan (dan7x7) | that could explain thing |
15:15 | Tali Rosca | Sorry, bad English. Every full meter. Not every even. |
15:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I do remember that the raw files for a sim are 256x256 not 257x257. |
15:16 | Tali Rosca | 0, 1, 2, 3... |
15:16 | Dan (dan7x7) | ok got it...thanks |
15:16 | Dan (dan7x7) | wish i could save a raw file lol |
15:17 | Tali Rosca | I *think* that when you upload a raw, the 256th belongs to the next sim, and you can't adjust it. |
15:17 | Dan (dan7x7) | ty |
15:17 | Tali Rosca | Though the connected-ness of the points Wordsmith mentioned will kick in. |
15:19 | Tali Rosca | By the way, on a different topic, last week I claimed that we had some 800 visitors weekly. That was, in fact, slightly misleading, as that is 800 *new residents*, i.e. people younger than one week. If we count all visitors, we're closer to 1400 or 1500, though I do not have the exact number. |
15:19 | Tali Rosca | Questi, do you have the full visitor number? |
15:20 | Marion Questi | I do not. We only count the newcomers. |
15:20 | Dan (dan7x7) | is flexprim cloths going away |
15:20 | Marion Questi | I also count the visitors to the Hall of Caledon but there is overlap with the newcomers. |
15:20 | Ravelli Ormstein | haven't heard about it |
15:20 | Dan (dan7x7) | mostly mesh out there now lol |
15:20 | Tali Rosca | As for flexis, they are one tool in the toolbox. |
15:20 | Tali Rosca | Some use for it has been superseded by mesh. |
15:20 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | They still fulfill a need not matched by mesh. |
15:21 | Tali Rosca | Others... well, say, people really need to learn how to include flexis in mesh hair! |
15:21 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Mesh does not float in a wind, but with joint movement. |
15:21 | Larkylouz | If you want prim clothing, check out the freebie boxes available at the Free Dove and elsewhere. |
15:21 | Dan (dan7x7) | kk |
15:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And mesh doesn't bend at all, unless it is a rigged attachment. |
15:22 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | I did see a flexi and mesh hair put together |
15:22 | Tali Rosca | With every new tool, we go through a phase where people use if for *everything*, and then slowly learn how to mix things up for best effect. |
15:22 | Dan (dan7x7) | what is the max inventory items you can have |
15:23 | Tali Rosca | A lot. |
15:23 | Dan (dan7x7) | lol |
15:23 | Meora (menchor) | If they had the clothes deformer out there would be more users of mesh clothes |
15:23 | Dan (dan7x7) | funny |
15:23 | Tali Rosca | https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits is a good page for such numbers. |
15:23 | Dan (dan7x7) | cool |
15:24 | Tali Rosca | I am not sure there is an actual limit on the whole inventory as such. |
15:24 | Dan (dan7x7) | just the time factor hehe |
15:25 | Tali Rosca | Yeah, it's one of those self-adjusting things. |
15:25 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | does your inventory, if there is a lot in it, lag you? |
15:25 | Tali Rosca | Generally speaking, no, not once it is loaded and cached on your machine. |
15:25 | Dan (dan7x7) | how is SSB working out for LL |
15:26 | Marion Questi | It can take time to load...but the listing is just text after all...and is much more compact than graphics. |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Last I'd read, SSB is working. |
15:26 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | I see> |
15:26 | Tali Rosca | All reports on SSB is that it's kickin'. |
15:26 | Tali Rosca | Performing to spec and with the expected server load. |
15:27 | Dan (dan7x7) | is it total arcoss the world now |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | No, it's still only on two release channels. |
15:27 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Not yet. |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | Le Tigre and... |
15:27 | Ravelli Ormstein | Magnum |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | I can't remember if it is Magnum or Blue Steel. |
15:27 | Dan (dan7x7) | how can i tell were my sim is |
15:27 | Tali Rosca | Magnum, then :-) |
15:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Help about SL |
15:28 | Ravelli Ormstein | open the About window in the Help menu |
15:28 | Dan (dan7x7) | and that tells you? |
15:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That will have the sim software version and also give the RC if it isn't the standard one. |
15:29 | Dan (dan7x7) | cool |
15:29 | Meora (menchor) | You are at 231,489.0, 261,518.0, 28.8 in Caledon Oxbridge located at sim8901.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.41.77:13022) Second Life Server 13.07.19.278836 Release Notes |
15:29 | Larkylouz | RC? |
15:29 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Release candidate. |
15:29 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | One of Le Tigre, Magnum, or Blue Steel. |
15:30 | Tali Rosca | Or possibly "Snack", but that is rare. |
15:31 | Dan (dan7x7) | got cha |
15:31 | Dan (dan7x7) | thanks |
15:32 | Tali Rosca | (Snack is not part of the normal cycle, but is used if a special project requires some extra eyes) |
15:32 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | Raises hand. |
15:33 | Marion Questi | Yes, Miss Anais? |
15:33 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | Is there a way to tell, where the most people are at any given time? Like a list of numbers of people on sims? |
15:34 | Marion Questi | You can look at your Map. |
15:34 | Marion Questi | Just mouse over a sim and it will tell you how many people are there at the moment. |
15:34 | Tali Rosca | It tends to correlate with the destination guide, though. |
15:35 | Tali Rosca | But that doesn't show you the "flash mobs" which gather at specific, limited events. |
15:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That lets you look at a region near where you are. |
15:35 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | YEs, I was wondering about world wide. |
15:35 | Marion Questi | No, It works anywhere on the Map. |
15:35 | Tali Rosca | I have seen some 3rd party stats on "most visited sim", but I can't remember the source. |
15:36 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | Ok, thank you. |
15:36 | Tali Rosca | But I do remember New World Notes sometimes highlighting them. |
15:36 | Tali Rosca | Are they pulled from Tyche's grid watch? |
15:36 | Larkylouz | http://secondlife.com/destinations/popular |
15:37 | Larkylouz | http://slpopularplaces.com/secondlife.php |
15:37 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | ah ok, good links |
15:37 | Tali Rosca | And Tyche Sherpherd runs http://www.gridsurvey.com/ but I think that's only for landmass. |
15:37 | Marion Questi | Miss FunnyJuli, you microphone is open. |
15:38 | Marion Questi | Who has a question for us? |
15:39 | Marion Questi | Welcome Miss Seriman. Do you have a question? :) |
15:39 | Gronk Seriman | No, I'm just late to the party. |
15:39 | Gronk Seriman smiles
15:39 | Codyhatescops | Is anyone okay here? |
15:39 | Tali Rosca | Questionssss.... musssst have questionssss... |
15:39 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | :) |
15:39 | Dan (dan7x7) | could use a coke lol |
15:40 | Martini Discovolante | i am okay.. are you okay? you seem to have issues. |
15:40 | Codyhatescops | hey dont make fun of my issues |
15:40 | Martini Discovolante | i was not , i was asking in allconcern. |
15:40 | Codyhatescops | makeing sure everyone is okay and safe here |
15:40 | Ravelli Ormstein | we are :-) |
15:41 | Codyhatescops | thats good |
15:41 | Dan (dan7x7) | why do we have roofs here lol it never rains |
15:41 | Codyhatescops | casue if there was a problem i could fix it |
15:41 | Gronk Seriman | I'n not just okay, I'm Prachy! |
15:41 | Ravelli Ormstein | as a sun protection |
15:41 | Gronk Seriman | Peachy! |
15:41 | Larkylouz | I dunno. New Toulouse is quite flooded at the moment. |
15:41 | Dan (dan7x7) | lol |
15:41 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | was gonna say |
15:41 | Marion Questi | For the same reason that there is a booming trade in fake food in the Marketplace...:) |
15:41 | Codyhatescops | im sorry |
15:42 | Tali Rosca | People are creatures of habit. |
15:42 | Codyhatescops | thats have a moment to think about the good people we lost |
15:42 | Tali Rosca | They tend to build cool versions of what they already know from RL. |
15:42 | Dan (dan7x7) | yea noticed that...lol |
15:42 | Tali Rosca | Given that we can do pretty much anything here, there are surprisingly few flights of pure fancy. |
15:42 | Dan (dan7x7) | but lots of new unseen stuff also |
15:42 | Martini Discovolante | and they like the rituals of things such as food. |
15:43 | Tali Rosca | Sometimes, people ask my why I have chosen to be a *cat*, and I usually answer by asking why they have chosen to be a human. |
15:43 | Larkylouz | :^) |
15:43 | Martini Discovolante | yes.. why oh why! |
15:43 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | you got to pick? |
15:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | You get to pick. |
15:44 | Dan (dan7x7) | i have heard that over 70% of women here area really men...is that tru |
15:44 | Tali Rosca | Not as such, but you get to customize our avatar as you see fit later. |
15:44 | Marion Questi | Who knows? |
15:44 | Martini Discovolante | there ios no way to know. |
15:44 | Dan (dan7x7) | so maybe a false rumor? |
15:44 | Martini Discovolante | so assume that you amy be surprised. |
15:45 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | sort of thrilling don't you think? |
15:45 | Marion Questi | This is a good place to learn that appearance and apparent gender are really pretty superficial. |
15:45 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | I doubt it is that high |
15:45 | Dan (dan7x7) | that is a good point |
15:45 | Tali Rosca | And that goes both ways, I should say. I think I have seen all possible combinations of RL and SL gender and sexuality. |
15:46 | Dan (dan7x7) | can anything tell if you have on a male or female avi |
15:46 | Tali Rosca | Statistics point to the users being *slightly* slanted towards female, and bit older than the "typical" gamer, but how reliable that is, I don't know. |
15:46 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | there's a lot more to do in Second Life that's a lot more interesting and challenging, to tell the truth |
15:47 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | The bigger bosom the female avatar has, the more likely it is that the person behind the avatar is a male... |
15:47 | Dan (dan7x7) | just wondering lol |
15:47 | Meora (menchor) | Ha ha ha hahahaaa |
15:47 | Dan (dan7x7) | lol that is true |
15:47 | Tali Rosca | And no, there is no way for, say, scripts to tell your gender. A *client* can, since it has to draw the appropriate base model. |
15:47 | Gronk Seriman | That's one of the things about SL. People need to learn that they deal with the avatar they see. If it's a robot, it's a robot. If it's a dragon, it's a dragon. Act accordingly. |
15:48 | Codyhatescops | pce otu homies |
15:48 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | what Seriman said ty |
15:48 | Marion Questi | Peace, Mr Cody |
15:48 | Ravelli Ormstein | if you don't get the gender that way, check the profile's About text |
15:49 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | or just ask? |
15:49 | Ravelli Ormstein | some write in their profile about their gender |
15:49 | Ravelli Ormstein | hmmm, asking, yes... could work too :-) |
15:49 | Dan (dan7x7) | wow slaps forhead... |
15:49 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | how do you tell about race though? |
15:49 | Marion Questi | Good luck with that...:) |
15:50 | Ravelli Ormstein | uh oh |
15:50 | Gronk Seriman | Wow! Ha! |
15:50 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, Klingons often think it's a good day to die. |
15:50 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Race? Like drow, dragon, automaton or plankton? |
15:50 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | or weight? |
15:50 | Tali Rosca | Weight, you can in fact get. |
15:50 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | :) |
15:50 | Martini Discovolante | feline, bovine, ursine? |
15:50 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | age of course is no problem at all |
15:50 | Tali Rosca | Because it keys in to the physics system in SL. |
15:50 | Marion Questi | We have biggies, tinies, dragons... |
15:51 | Ravelli Ormstein | and elephants |
15:51 | Gronk Seriman | It's the beauty of SL. Even the disabled can walk here. Don't go punching holes in their fun. |
15:51 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | the overwhelming majority seem to choose human or human like |
15:52 | Larkylouz | The rest are only limited by their imaginations. |
15:52 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Depends on the rgion you frequent... |
15:52 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | *region |
15:52 | Tali Rosca | Better clothes that way :-P |
15:52 | Codyhatescops | Excuse me miss funny plz take a seat |
15:52 | Codyhatescops | and no more running thats not safe |
15:52 | Funnyjuli | não sei como sentarf |
15:53 | Tali Rosca | I did, in fact, once have a more "primmy" feline look, but I chose the slimmer, more humanoid look to be able to use normal clothes (by and large). |
15:53 | Funnyjuli | como saio daqui? |
15:53 | Marion Questi | We have only a few minutes left in our hour. Time for one or two more questions. |
15:53 | Dan (dan7x7) | hate computers |
15:53 | Marion Questi | Anyone? |
15:54 | Gronk Seriman | How's the website doing? Is there a sitemeter to see how caledonoxbridge.org is being used? |
15:55 | Larkylouz | I use it all the time! |
15:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I check it now and again. I've got it tied with Google analytics. |
15:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Eu verificá-lo de vez em quando. Eu tenho ele amarrado com o Google Analytics. |
15:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Starting to have more people search for it. |
15:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Only a few links to it. |
15:56 | T.S. Elliot (tselliot) | looks great, thanks for mentioning it |
15:58 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The schedule images and notecards are now generated via the website. |
15:58 | Larkylouz | Thank you, Deans and all. I must go to another commitment. |
15:58 | Gronk Seriman | It's wonderful! I just hope it's being visited. |
15:58 | Gronk Seriman | Ooo! |
15:58 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Something like 280 visits |
15:59 | Gronk Seriman | Per what? |
15:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | 496 page views. |
15:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Since 4 July |
15:59 | Gronk Seriman | Ah. |
16:00 | Ravelli Ormstein | so 30 a day |
16:00 | Dan (dan7x7) | well i will visit it now that i know about it |
16:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | About 71% are returning visits. |
16:00 | Ravelli Ormstein | must be me |
16:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | ;) |
16:00 | Ravelli Ormstein | :-) |
16:00 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | :) |
16:00 | Tali Rosca | It makes sense that it's the regulars who know about it who hit it. |
16:00 | Meora (menchor) | makes the class schedule easy to check |
16:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | tc Miss Larky |
16:00 | Tali Rosca | I'd think that most "random" people use the inworld systems. |
16:00 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | really love your classes |
16:00 | Dan (dan7x7) | oh question |
16:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Quick one? |
16:01 | Dan (dan7x7) | im trying to watch video on a prim |
16:01 | Dan (dan7x7) | what do i kneed flash |
16:01 | Dan (dan7x7) | or what |
16:02 | Tali Rosca | Video on a prim is essentially launching a completely normal web browser. |
16:02 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Quicktime, as I recall. |
16:02 | Ravelli Ormstein | both ways work |
16:02 | Dan (dan7x7) | my main compuer can...my laptop no |
16:02 | Tali Rosca | Or, actually, there are two types. |
16:02 | Tali Rosca | The *parcel media* uses a dedicated stream, which uses Quicktime. |
16:02 | Dan (dan7x7) | kk |
16:02 | Tali Rosca | But the "show any youtube page" is likely the web-based version. |
16:03 | Tali Rosca | Which is a full browser. (A webkit, i.e. the same as Chrome). |
16:03 | Dan (dan7x7) | yea just viewisnsg my own videos on dropbox on a single cube |
16:03 | Marion Questi | My friends we are out of time so let us leave it that. |
16:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | Parcel Media vs. Media on a Prim |
16:03 | Marion Questi | We are adjourned. |
16:03 | Marion Questi | Thank you all for coming! |
16:03 | Dan (dan7x7) | thank you all |
16:03 | Anaïs (anaisboheme) | Thank you so much Professors :) |
16:04 | Dan (dan7x7) | clapping yea yea |
16:04 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you Deans! |
16:04 | Meora (menchor) | always learn soomething |
16:04 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thank you all. |
16:04 | Martini Discovolante | thank you all for coming, adn for the interesting questions |
16:04 | Ravelli Ormstein | many thanks to everyone |
16:04 | Tali Rosca | That was a pretty meaty evening. |
16:04 | Marion Questi | Indeed! |
