Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2013-07-21
14:58 | Marion Questi | Welcome everyone! We have a nice audience tonight. |
14:58 | Marion Questi | We will begin as soon as Dean Discovolante returns. |
14:58 | Marion Questi | Let us begin! |
14:58 | Kerhop Seattle | a nice audience, in that case I'd better leave... |
14:59 | Marion Questi | This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. On the Oxbridge website you can find a list of all the Deans with summaries of their respective areas of responsibility, : http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
14:59 | Marion Questi | Who would like to ask the first question? |
15:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Or the second question first? |
15:01 | Niki Listern raises hand
15:01 | Marion Questi | Yes..Miss Listern? |
15:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Miss Niki? |
15:01 | Niki Listern | yes I had an issue earlier yesterday I believe it was |
15:02 | Niki Listern | I was trying to talk to two people at the same time one spoke Portuguese |
15:02 | Niki Listern | and I was trying to help that newbie out |
15:03 | Niki Listern | the issue was I didn't have any land marks or anything to give to that person to send them to the right place |
15:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | i will share a package of note cards with you |
15:03 | Martini Discovolante | can you pass one to Miss Zsophia too, Ravelli? |
15:04 | Zsophia Innovia | Thank you |
15:04 | Martini Discovolante | she has just rejoined us after a long absence |
15:04 | Ravelli Ormstein | ah, ok. i will |
15:04 | Martini Discovolante | i was remiss in asking you to include her |
15:04 | Niki Listern | Thank you |
15:04 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | mm.. think there that you were trying to help was me... |
15:04 | Marion Questi | Yes...welcome back Miss Innovia! |
15:04 | Niki Listern | thank you thank you |
15:04 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | ...i asked what places were very nice to see? |
15:04 | Zsophia Innovia | Thank you very much I am very happy to be home |
15:05 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Depends on what you consider nice... |
15:05 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Dean Ormstein is our Information Officer, btw. |
15:05 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | ..i ment it in a 'must see' way |
15:06 | Larkylouz | May I pipe in here and make a suggestion to all? Calas Galadhon is a beautiful area, and is having difficulties. calasgaladhon.com The website has details. |
15:06 | Ravelli Ormstein | thank you for this hint, Larky! |
15:07 | Larkylouz nods. "It is my favorite place in SL."
15:07 | Marion Questi | Have you explored Caledon yet, Miss Maybe? If not you might try the Caledon Quest. |
15:08 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | i havent done the quest.. still having fun exploring |
15:08 | Marion Questi | Ourside Caledon, I would suggest New Babbage and Chakryn Forest. |
15:08 | Zsophia Innovia | the quest helps with that |
15:09 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | ..well its not that i wont find places to see, just realised i was thhere with the portugese speaking person |
15:10 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | ..i got a translater.. after seeing it work so well :) |
15:10 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Finnish results are still somewhat.... amusing.... |
15:11 | Larkylouz | I have heard that the Portuguese translations are not perfect, either, but I use it all the time. |
15:11 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There is also the destination guide in your viewer. |
15:11 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As well as search (for places) if you have a particular interest. |
15:12 | Marion Questi | The Destination Guide on the web is the most complete: https://secondlife.com/destinations/events |
15:13 | Meora (menchor) | question |
15:13 | Marion Questi | Yes Miss Meora? |
15:14 | Meora (menchor) | several weeks ago I was here and a griefer appeared, no one official was on the sim, so I put out a call in the group that there was a griefer, I got a response but I was wondering if there were any procedures for dealing with them |
15:15 | Marion Questi | You did exactly the right thing. |
15:15 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Abuse Report could also be a good idea |
15:15 | Meora (menchor) | I think I filed one |
15:15 | Zsophia Innovia | muting them makes your life better |
15:15 | Meora (menchor) | did that |
15:15 | Martini Discovolante | yes. those are always good to do. |
15:16 | Meora (menchor) | and used the anti spam in Firestorm |
15:16 | Ravelli Ormstein | sitting down and switching off particles at first will ensure, that you still can use your viewer |
15:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A note to the Deans (box here) may also bring one of us if we are offworlk but online. |
15:16 | Larkylouz | If you've not taken Professor Lindal Kidd's Avatar Safety class, I recommend it highly. |
15:17 | Meora (menchor) | I got a response and it was cleaned up in about 15 minutes as I explained to a newbie what a griefer was |
15:17 | Martini Discovolante | if you IM me and i am not on, i get the note via GMAIL |
15:18 | Martini Discovolante | it is pokey, but efective |
15:18 | Larkylouz raises her hand with a question for Dean Martini.
15:18 | Larkylouz | Is sending a notecard as effective for you, Dean? |
15:19 | Martini Discovolante | yes, but i only get it inworld. i will get an IM in full in email |
15:19 | Niki Listern | I am sorry I have to leave early take care |
15:19 | Martini Discovolante | i do not get a lot of messags, oso they rarely cap. |
15:19 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | tc Miss Niki. |
15:19 | Marion Questi | If you drop a text notecard in the postbox, a copy of the text will be forwarded to the all the Dean's email addresses. |
15:19 | Larkylouz | TY. |
15:20 | Marion Questi | But it must be short. |
15:20 | Meora (menchor) | good to know |
15:20 | Marion Questi | Long notes get truncated...:) |
15:20 | Martini Discovolante | that is true too. |
15:20 | Larkylouz | Unfortunately, when there is an emergency, I don't have the presence of mind to walk all the way to the postbox! |
15:20 | Marion Questi | Exactly. |
15:21 | Larkylouz frowns at her own lack of clear thinking
15:21 | Ravelli Ormstein | Larkylouz, search your inventory for a note card called "COU Dean's Post Box", it came with the Faculty Kit. |
15:21 | Marion Questi | The best thing is to get on COUG and ask for an EM. |
15:21 | Larkylouz | Oh, thank you, Dean. I will play with that. |
15:21 | Martini Discovolante | it is usually easier to IM someon on the faculty list that you know is IN, who can mome over. |
15:21 | Meora (menchor) | I asked on both that and the Caledon Chat |
15:21 | Martini Discovolante | come* |
15:22 | Larkylouz | I have asked various dignitaries and powerful sorts to be on my friend list so that I can see quickly who is around. |
15:22 | Larkylouz cams in on Dean Martini and decides the Dean's migraine must be feeling better!
15:23 | Martini Discovolante | fo r those of you on faculty-- clciking on the Group Info to see who is online is a good way. |
15:23 | Martini Discovolante | :) |
15:24 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
15:26 | Meora (menchor) | can I ask another? |
15:26 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | You may. ;) |
15:27 | Meora (menchor) | The Lindens have rolled out materials in their viewer and I assume the third parties will have it soon, is there going to be a class in how to do this? |
15:27 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I'll take that as a suggestion. |
15:28 | Martini Discovolante | we try to teach the basics here |
15:28 | Martini Discovolante | that is a rather advanced skill set |
15:28 | Meora (menchor) | I was thinking basic like sculpties and mesh |
15:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I will be adding some to my mesh class on it. |
15:28 | Red Quixote | I will also look into the subject |
15:28 | Martini Discovolante | i ahve changed my Texture class to address the new look ot the Texture picker window |
15:29 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Yes, the interface has changed slightly to accommodate the new options. |
15:30 | Martini Discovolante | it is a lot tidier |
15:30 | Martini Discovolante | it is a lot tidier |
15:31 | Phillys Maybe (phillysmaybe) | *silently sneaks out, thanks, bbye |
15:31 | Martini Discovolante | bye Miss Phillys |
15:31 | Ravelli Ormstein | bye bye Miss Maybe |
15:32 | Marion Questi | Who has another question for us? |
15:32 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | tc Miss Maybe |
15:35 | Martini Discovolante | any boddies? |
15:36 | Marion Questi | If no one asks a question, I am apt to sing a song and believe me you don't want that...:) |
15:36 | Meora (menchor) | uhoh! |
15:37 | Red Quixote | come on gang,... let's see if we can stump the deans ;P |
15:37 | Marion Questi clears his throat...
15:37 | Red Quixote | ruh roh |
15:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | “You are sad,” the Knight said in an anxious tone: “Let me sing you a song to comfort you.” “Is it very long?” Alice asked, for she had heard a good deal of poetry that day. “It's long,” said the Knight, “but it's very, very beautiful. Everybody that hears me sing it - either it brings the tears to their eyes, or else -” “Or else what?” said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause. “Or else it doesn't, you know. The name of the song is called ‘Haddocks' Eyes.’” “Oh, that's the name of the song, is it?" Alice said, trying to feel interested. “No, you don't understand,” the Knight said, looking a little vexed. “That's what the name is called. The name really is ‘The Aged Aged Man.’” “Then I ought to have said ‘That's what the song is called’?” Alice corrected herself. “No, you oughtn't: that's quite another thing! The song is called ‘Ways And Means’: but that's only what it's called, you know!” “Well, what is the song, then?” said |
15:37 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | *checks his inventory for the steampunk guitar* |
15:38 | Ruth (moabite) | What kinds of behavious (suspected recruiting) in the landing area should cause a call for help? |
15:38 | FIRE (opiorphin) | seriously |
15:38 | Ravelli Ormstein | e.g. a griefing attack with a particle bomb |
15:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, the rule card spells out expected behavior. |
15:39 | Ravelli Ormstein | or when a vampire is on hunt... |
15:39 | Marion Questi | Recruiting can be difficult to detect if it's done in IM. |
15:39 | Martini Discovolante | if you have a copy , you could pass itto them. |
15:39 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | New vampire recruiters seem to still appear occasionally. |
15:39 | Marion Questi | If it is in Chat...you can give a verbal warning. |
15:39 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The recruiting issue mostly comes up with those doing vampire role-playing. |
15:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Wearing the tags for that is also a violation (i.e. quart low on blood). |
15:40 | Martini Discovolante | if a vampire asks you if you would like a bite, ask them if they would like a stake in the heart. |
15:40 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | I tell them that biting is banned here and eject them. |
15:40 | Martini Discovolante | well there is that. |
15:41 | Larkylouz giggles
15:41 | James MacCloude (mac6572) | I tell them My blood is toxic |
15:43 | James MacCloude (mac6572) | of course I activated the garlic neckless |
15:43 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Another way to end up in Bloodlner lists |
15:43 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Beyond that, weapons in hand, running over people with vehicles, non-PG group role names..... |
15:43 | Larkylouz | I do note the names of suspected recruiters in case they escalate later. You know the type - the folks who just hang out in the welcome area for no discernible reasons. |
15:43 | Ruth (moabite) | zzzzzzme tries to imagine garlic with a neck |
15:43 | Marion Questi | One sign of possible recruiting is when an Oldbie hangs around for a long period. My strategy is to engage these folks in conversation, ask what brings them to Oxbridge. If they haven't a clear purpose, I tell them that we discourage loitering because of the sim limits.. Often they will move on of their own accord. |
15:44 | Larkylouz | Oh, I shall remember that. |
15:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Perhaps play music from a group named UV. |
15:44 | Martini Discovolante | I always ask "how may we help you today?" |
15:44 | Marion Questi | I don't mean you should harass people... |
15:45 | Martini Discovolante | adn if htey stand still long enough, i like to tell them the history of Caledon! |
15:45 | Marion Questi | Many people come here to socialize...and as long as the sim can bear the load, thats fine. |
15:46 | Marion Questi | It's the ones who do not engage in chat...but just camp here to IM that we want to move. |
15:46 | Martini Discovolante | but anyone who loiters during classes, when the sim is near capacity through several warnings will find themselves chatting with the fishes |
15:47 | Larkylouz | I find that most of the people who regularly hang out here will move to the chat circle if I ask them politely. |
15:47 | Meora (menchor) | I noticed we hit 20 earlier and we didn't get a notice to move to Village |
15:47 | Martini Discovolante | depends on where you were. |
15:48 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Depends on if the script boots out sleepers |
15:48 | Larkylouz wonders if adding a token piranha to the local ocean would be in order. . .
15:48 | Marion Questi | You are out of range of the warning. |
15:48 | Martini Discovolante | but honestly-- if you do not have any business here, and we are crowded.. just take the chatting elsewhere |
15:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | You don't get the message in here, since we don't tell class-takers to leave. |
15:48 | Martini Discovolante | or inside the cathedral. |
15:49 | Martini Discovolante | which is why we discourage congregating there... in addition to being distracting to new people trying to get their feet, |
15:50 | Marion Questi | We have about 10 minutes left; time for another question or two. Anyone? |
15:51 | James MacCloude (mac6572) | well I'm off to bed soon so good night everyone |
15:51 | Meora (menchor) | godnight |
15:51 | Meora (menchor) | goodnight |
15:51 | Ravelli Ormstein | Good night Mr MacCloude |
15:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Sleep well. |
15:51 | James MacCloude (mac6572) | I'll try too |
15:52 | Ruth (moabite) | Is this sim on SSB/Sunshine yet? |
15:52 | Ravelli Ormstein | so far i know only Magnum regions support SSB |
15:53 | Ravelli Ormstein | and Oxbridge isn't on SSB at the moment |
15:53 | Ruth (moabite) | Tigre went off? |
15:53 | Martini Discovolante | they switched it |
15:53 | Larkylouz | How do I figure out which regions are Magnum, Tigre or whatever? |
15:53 | Meora (menchor) | Caledon by the Sea is a Magnum |
15:53 | Larkylouz | Particularly the one I'm in at any given moment. |
15:53 | Ravelli Ormstein | in the About window (Help > About) |
15:54 | Ravelli Ormstein | currently it says "You are at 231,475.0, 261,512.0, 30.7 in Caledon Oxbridge located at sim9198.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.42.134:13029) Second Life Server 13.07.08.278357" |
15:54 | Larkylouz | Agni? |
15:54 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It includes the server version. |
15:54 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Agni is this grid. |
15:54 | Meora (menchor) | Agni is the main SL grid |
15:54 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As opposed to the test/beta grid, which is Aditi. |
15:54 | Ravelli Ormstein | some regions in Caledon are on Magnum already |
15:55 | Martini Discovolante | i canna find it, Ravelli |
15:55 | Larkylouz | Does the server number translate somehow; perhaps a list somewhere? |
15:55 | Martini Discovolante | seems it used ot be there. |
15:55 | Martini Discovolante | perhaps because we are a homestead |
15:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I believe there's an annotation with the server number, not the number itself. |
15:56 | Ravelli Ormstein | nope, it would say Magnum somewhere there, if the region is on it |
15:56 | Marion Questi | You can read the server release notes here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:Server_Release_Notes |
15:58 | Marion Questi | A final question, anyonej? |
15:58 | Ravelli Ormstein | here is an example for a magnum region: https://jira.secondlife.com/secure/attachment/70633/MaterialsViewerDeferredIndoorsKO.png |
15:58 | Martini Discovolante | yes.. that is what i remember seeing. |
15:59 | Larkylouz | Is Magnum a server name? And for whatever reason (homestead sim, perhaps?) it isn't on my help readout. |
15:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | RC Magnum before the number itself. |
16:00 | Ravelli Ormstein | Magnum is the name of a server channel, you can compare it with the Release Candidate of an upcoming server version |
16:00 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There are three release candidate versions: Magnum, Blue Steel, and Le Tigre. |
16:00 | Martini Discovolante | as a homestead, we share with other homesteads, adn when we re start the homestead, it changes. |
16:00 | Martini Discovolante | all names from the movie Zoolander |
16:01 | Larkylouz | Thank you - that clarifies a bit. |
16:01 | Ruth (moabite) | The other homesteads with which we share a server - they change regularly (randomly)? |
16:01 | Marion Questi | I'm afraid we are out of time. |
16:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | LL uses these for final testing of sim software before general release to all other sims. |
16:01 | Marion Questi | Thank you all for joining us! |
16:01 | Martini Discovolante | thanks everyone |
16:01 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you, Deans! |
16:02 | Ruth (moabite) | Thank you. |
16:02 | Ravelli Ormstein | yes, they change randomly. but LL wanted to move us permanently on a server with some more performance... |
16:02 | Meora (menchor) | thank you for answering questions |
16:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | thank you all for coming |
16:03 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Okay, bedtime for me.. |
16:03 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thanks all. |
16:03 | Marion Questi | Goodnight everyone! |
16:03 | Ravelli Ormstein | Good Night Elfbiter |
16:03 | Red Quixote | g'nite Elf |
16:03 | Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) | Be seeing you |
16:03 | Martini Discovolante | night Mr EB... thanks for staying up with us! |
16:03 | Larkylouz | Thank you, everyone. Take care. |
16:03 | Martini Discovolante | you too Ravelli! |
