15:00 |
Marion Questi |
Shall we begin? |
15:00 |
Marion Questi |
Good evening everyone! And welcome. |
15:01 |
Marion Questi |
This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. |
15:01 |
Marion Questi |
On the Oxbridge website you can find a list of all the Deans with summaries of their respective areas of responsibility, : http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/qna_index.php |
15:01 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
hello |
15:01 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
may i start |
15:01 |
Marion Questi |
Certainly Miss Queen. |
15:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Nods. Go ahead. |
15:01 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
thank you |
15:02 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
recently Linden took 9000 Ls from my account |
15:02 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
and i dont know how to get it back |
15:02 |
EponineRyder |
oh dear! |
15:02 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
we cannot help with LL matters |
15:02 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
i dont think u can help me |
15:02 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
really all you can do is look at your transactions history and file a report |
15:02 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
i just need to know who to talk to |
15:03 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
how do i file a report i guess is the question then |
15:03 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
it shoudl describe the transaction |
15:03 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
nothing in the histopry or account etc |
15:03 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
its just gone after i updated |
15:04 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Grabbing/downloading your transaction history would be a good first step. That's only there for 30 days. |
15:04 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
are you down to only :$20? |
15:04 |
Tali Rosca |
"Updated"? |
15:04 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
no it took every thing |
15:04 |
Dave (techdave) |
May I mention there was a MAJOR policy change in L$ at first of May, LL is best to check with them, or blog. |
15:04 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
you can set the length of tiem you can see, up to 30 days ago |
15:04 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
and clicking on it doesnt bring it baclk |
15:05 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
ok so the blog is where i need to go |
15:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Your balance on the webpage (SL) is also gone? |
15:05 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
yes |
15:06 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
it all says O |
15:06 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
first look in your dashboard, on the website, ACCOUNT>Transactions, adn set date to before the date your money disappeared. |
15:06 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
you should see when oit moved and to whom |
15:06 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
4i looked and it doesnt show anything after my update |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It should show a balance up to some data, however. And then zero. |
15:07 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
yes it showed the last thing i purchased |
15:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's not a function of the viewer. |
15:07 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
but bal 0 after that |
15:08 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
htis is where you contact support:: https://support.secondlife.com/contact-support/ |
15:08 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
all i did was updated and came into sl and then it was gone |
15:08 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
thank you |
15:08 |
Tali Rosca |
"Update" what? |
15:08 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
i think thats where ill start |
15:08 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
you might try reinstalling the SL viewer again. |
15:09 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
you know how when u come into sl and they offer u an update |
15:09 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
i clicked yes and always have |
15:09 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
this time something went wrong |
15:10 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
yes... go to the bottom of any page and click on the Download Second Life and get yorself a fresh copy--- couldn't hurt. |
15:10 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
re[lacehte old one. |
15:10 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
replace* |
15:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Other than that, only Linden Lab can help. |
15:11 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
right |
15:11 |
Marion Questi |
Let us move along. |
15:11 |
Marion Questi |
Next question? |
15:11 |
Queen V (queenv11) |
thank you for ur help |
15:13 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
somebodyanybody? |
15:14 |
Dave (techdave) |
Any specific development/future plans in works for Caledon? |
15:15 |
Marion Questi |
None that I am privy to....:) |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
Well, being new in the team, I can say what I am up to. |
15:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perhaps including a few more classes. |
15:15 |
Tali Rosca |
I am. in fact, working on some updates, but it will likely not be visible to Caledon-at-large. |
15:16 |
EponineRyder |
I am wondering about alts |
15:16 |
Tali Rosca |
I am primarily inworld with some support programming to ease the running of Oxbridge. |
15:17 |
Marion Questi |
Remember that we are Deans of Oxbridge .we are just citizens of Independent State of Caledon. |
15:17 |
Tali Rosca |
*involved. Sheesh. Can't type. |
15:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Infrastructure of storing, communicating, and presenting information. |
15:18 |
Tali Rosca |
But what about alts? "Wondering" in general is a little wide... |
15:18 |
Marion Questi |
Is that a new class Dean Jarvinen? |
15:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
No, more on the support programming. |
15:19 |
EponineRyder |
oh well, I have just discovered making alts |
15:19 |
EponineRyder |
I just open a new account |
15:19 |
EponineRyder |
connected to the same email |
15:19 |
Marion Questi |
Many people have alts...they are quite common for various reasons. |
15:20 |
EponineRyder |
its that the only way to do it, to have an alt, separate account? |
15:20 |
Tali Rosca |
Yes; alts are entirely separate. SL has no way to connect accounts and consider one the "master". |
15:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Essentially. RL information is the same, but it's a new avatar account. |
15:20 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
i think you are allowed 5 on your email. |
15:20 |
Marion Questi |
As I recall there is some limit to how many avatars can share the same email address. |
15:20 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
^ |
15:20 |
EponineRyder |
yes I had heard 5 |
15:21 |
EponineRyder |
and you cannot be discovered? |
15:21 |
EponineRyder |
that is what makes me wonder |
15:21 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
not unless you rat on yourself :) |
15:21 |
EponineRyder |
chuckles |
15:22 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
adn we all have detectable speech patterns and typing habits that might tip our frineds off. |
15:22 |
Marion Questi |
Your peers in SL cannot discover your alts....of course LL will know. |
15:22 |
Tali Rosca |
Nothing in the SL system as such expose the connection, but there are way people can find out. Mostly, by correlating information you happen to give more or less knowingly. |
15:22 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Or, unless you are a Linden and check IP addresses. |
15:22 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
liek typing "frinds" all the time! |
15:22 |
EponineRyder |
yes I see |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
It should be noted that some connections, like, say, to a parcel music stream, goes to the origin server, and not to SL's servers. |
15:23 |
Tali Rosca |
So the people who control those servers can see your IP number and potentially correlate it with avatars on the parcel. |
15:24 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
that is interesting! i did not know that! |
15:24 |
EponineRyder |
was wondering if your IP address is somehow connected to your avi |
15:25 |
EponineRyder |
ah ok, so people who control the servers basically can figure it out |
15:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
For LL yes, but not for other avatars. |
15:25 |
Marion Questi |
There is an exploit involving an avatar wearing a prim with web media on it...but you can defeat the exploit by setting your preferences so that media are not automatically loaded. |
15:25 |
EponineRyder |
I ran into someone I know very well by pure chance, and it was quite strange lol |
15:26 |
EponineRyder |
ah ok |
15:26 |
EponineRyder |
media preferences |
15:26 |
Tali Rosca |
Media-on-a-prim is another type of connection which goes directly to a 3rd party server. |
15:27 |
Marion Questi |
"Allow Media to auto-play" is the setting...just uncheck it. |
15:27 |
EponineRyder |
all right |
15:27 |
Marion Questi |
and "Play Media attached to other avatars" |
15:28 |
Marion Questi |
But don't worry about it. The odds that someone is stalking you in SL is pretty slim, I should think. |
15:29 |
EponineRyder |
yes, I am not very worried, just wondered if that friend could possible know who I was |
15:30 |
Marion Questi |
Next question, anyone? |
15:30 |
Marion Questi |
Alas, no. |
15:30 |
Virgil Cane (virgilcane) |
There used to be new resident homes in Oxbridge a few years ago open to residents younger than 40 days or so. Can one still find them anywhere? |
15:31 |
Tali Rosca |
Victims of the homestead downgrade. |
15:31 |
Virgil Cane (virgilcane) |
Okay. Thanks |
15:31 |
Marion Questi |
Oxbridge converted from a full sim to a homestead...and we coulndn't spare the prims |
15:31 |
Dave (techdave) |
So... back a subject, quickly... change in L$ policy apparently had no effect on Caledon operations. (just to ask.. no issues at all!) |
15:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We went from 15,000 prims to 3750 and a limit of 20 avatars at a time. |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
The ToS change primarily impacts how you can *cash out* L$. |
15:32 |
Marion Questi |
Which policy are you referring to Mr Dave? |
15:32 |
Virgil Cane (virgilcane) |
Oh, I see. |
15:32 |
Dave (techdave) |
L$ exchangeing on 3party exchanges... no longer permited |
15:32 |
Tali Rosca |
To some extend, how you can *buy* L$ too, but LL is starting up a new program of L$ resellers to address that. |
15:33 |
Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) |
Some exchanges have restarted |
15:33 |
Marion Questi |
Mr Dave, you are confusing us with Desmond Shang who owns Caledon. If he has had issues, he hasn't shared them with us. We just run Oxbridge. |
15:33 |
Tali Rosca |
If it has any impact on Caledon, it is only indirectly, if any residents have trouble buying L$ to pay their rent, but, as Questi says, we do not know such specifics. |
15:33 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
Caledon is Nation of over 40 regions |
15:33 |
Dave (techdave) |
Yes.. that's part of it... major changes elsewheres. Just thjought I'd ask! |
15:34 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
we are just one small one :) |
15:34 |
Dave (techdave) |
I sounds like the Homestead changes were had more effect. |
15:34 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Apparently, LL is trying to address the multiple currencies issue. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/More-Options-for-Buying-Linden-Dollars/ba-p/2011355 |
15:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oh, no question the homestead change has had more affect on Oxbridge. |
15:36 |
Tali Rosca |
My personal impression, speaking entirely off the cuff and off the record, is that Caledon plots and sims are primarily owned by people who do not have any problems under the new rules for Exchanges, so I do not expect any impact at all. |
15:37 |
Dave (techdave) |
That's good, TY! |
15:37 |
Marion Questi |
Welcome Mr Teddy. Have a seat. This is a Q&A ..all are welcome. |
15:37 |
Marion Questi |
Next question? |
15:38 |
Meora (menchor) |
I have found the classes here to be wonderful, are there plans for more? |
15:39 |
Marion Questi |
Righ click |
15:39 |
UTeddy |
How do i sit? |
15:39 |
Marion Questi |
Right click on a bench. |
15:39 |
EponineRyder |
lol |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. I've had people speak to me about a steampunk traditions class, about a clock-making class, and the basic scripting is coming back. |
15:39 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
and choose SIT HERE |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
One seat to a bench, btw. |
15:39 |
Tali Rosca |
Who's doing Basic Scripting? |
15:39 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
HH Bookmite. |
15:40 |
Marion Questi |
Excellent! |
15:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Has a draft to me. |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Basically, we like our instructors to have a sense of Oxbridge and Caledon culture. |
15:41 |
Mac (mcjunkin) |
Do you know when server side baking will start? |
15:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Have clear student outcomes for a class, and some reason to expect them to be able to organize and present material. |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Not an extremely formal bit, but a decent notecard on the above. |
15:43 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And to be clear that teaching a class is not a merchandising opportunity. |
15:44 |
Dave (techdave) |
(I did see a 'tip jar' in a class... is that common?) |
15:44 |
EponineRyder |
Curious about server side baking as well |
15:44 |
Tali Rosca |
As for the server-side baking, not really, no. There has been no official timeline. It's in the viewer code and sim code by now, but when the switch if flipped is still up in the air. One issue is when enough people are running a compatible client. That's pretty much a wildcard, really. |
15:44 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
and we liek regular classes, consistency and word of mouth help our attendance a lot |
15:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Up to the instructor on the tip jar. We do give a small honorarium per class. And donations to the medallions are always welcome and help keep the place running. ... very literally. |
15:46 |
EponineRyder |
Why do they not make clear when server side baking will happen |
15:47 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
perhaps they do not know themselves ;-) |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Because they aren't clear when all the bugs will be ironed out. |
15:47 |
Mac (mcjunkin) |
And can we expect it to improve performance? |
15:47 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Consistency of avatar appearance at least. |
15:47 |
Tali Rosca |
LL generally never gives hard deadlines for any features. There are still some issues which may or may not be worked out, but even if LL knew the timeline for those, they do not know when enough users upgrade their viewer to a version which includes the support. |
15:48 |
Mac (mcjunkin) |
It would be nice if it would help speed up rezzing. |
15:48 |
Tali Rosca |
And no, it will not improve performance. The serverside baking is to cut down on rez failures. |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Realize that it affects only avatar appearance. |
15:48 |
Glorf Bulmer |
So, not faster, but more reliable, then? |
15:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That's the hope. |
15:49 |
Mac (mcjunkin) |
well, that's something, at least. |
15:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The other project that's in the works is the material projects -- normal mapping and specular reflection. |
15:49 |
Tali Rosca |
...must...have...normal maps.... |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
braiinnnssss! |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
*materials project |
15:50 |
EponineRyder |
I have wondered, why does LL limit prims so much? It seems to me it hurts the economy. If you have to worry about prim limits, they you are less likey to buy things, which is a shame. |
15:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Server load. |
15:50 |
Tali Rosca |
Tradeoff. You hear people complain enough about lag. |
15:51 |
Tali Rosca |
More things on the screen means less performance. (Though see above: Must... have... normal maps!) |
15:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The reason that a homestead only has 1/4 the prims is that it's sharing the cpu with other homesteads. |
15:52 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
prims = server space = cost. |
15:53 |
EponineRyder |
yes |
15:53 |
EponineRyder |
not good for people who make such nice things though |
15:54 |
EponineRyder |
I suppose its a technical problem that will be overcome eventually |
15:54 |
Tali Rosca |
Strictly speaking, it's not really the server space which is the issue. Hard disk space is cheap. It's more an abstraction to avoid that the average user's graphics card melts. |
15:54 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Well, if they sell enough nice things, then the $300/month for a full sim may be within reach. |
15:54 |
Marion Questi |
Every prim no matter how small requires a lot of data to describe it....shape textures, position, orientation, velocity.. Those data require real memory and must be continually updated. |
15:55 |
Marion Questi |
We are almost out of time this evening. Time for a couple more quick questions. |
15:55 |
Marion Questi |
Anyone? |
15:55 |
Tali Rosca |
That is, incidentally, a large part of the reason behind the switch to the "Land Impact" system, rather than just "prim count"; the land impact better reflects the actual performance requirements. |
15:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
BTW quick annoucments. Improved campus map. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/campus_map.php |
15:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And a concise catalog of the classes currently being taught here. http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/classes/catalog.php |
15:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Last question? |
15:59 |
Marion Questi |
Hearing none...we are adjourned. |
15:59 |
Marion Questi |
Thank you all for coming! |
15:59 |
EponineRyder |
Thank you very much panel. Was enlightening :) |
15:59 |
Mac (mcjunkin) |
Thanks very much. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
16:00 |
Meora (menchor) |
thank you |
16:00 |
Martini Tiberius Discovolante (martini.discovolante) |
thank you all |
16:00 |
Virgil Cane (virgilcane) |
Thank you. |
16:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Every Sunday (almost) at this place and time. |
