Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2013-04-28
19:01 | Marion Questi | Time to begin, I think. |
19:01 | Marion Questi | Welcome everyone! |
19:01 | Marion Questi | This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. |
19:01 | dragonwarrio | what up dav2 |
19:02 | Marion Questi | Who would like to ask the first question? |
19:02 | Josain Zsun | "Let's get this trial on the road and hang this horse thief" |
19:02 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | 1) What's a bridge, in SL terms, ofc. "[2013/04/28 16:11] Starting conversation with Caledon Oxbridge University Group |
16:16 | dav2k Resident [16:10:37] Entered Caledon Oxbridge at 72, 140, 32 [16:10:57] Bridge detached. |
|
16:16 | dav2k Resident "Bridge Detached" ? " 2) alt-option click 'focus on a billboard, but then how do I do the vernier tuning so that the sign isn't just slightly askew? |
|
19:02 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Mr. Zsun beat me to it. But did not include a question mark. |
19:02 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | I win. |
19:03 | Oxbridge Mint | http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bridge |
19:03 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | ty |
19:03 | Oxbridge Mint | If you have a "Bridge" you are most likely using a third party client. |
19:03 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Yes, both Phoenix and SLiteChat |
19:03 | Oxbridge Mint | The "Bridge" allows for some enhanced capabilties over the LL client. |
19:03 | Marion Questi | That's a new one on me. |
19:03 | Martini Discovolante | and if you have a third party client, do join their support group. |
19:03 | Martini Discovolante | nad ask your questions there |
19:03 | Oxbridge Mint | The URL I posted explains the Firestorm bridge and is a good example of what they do. |
19:03 | Martini Discovolante | thye are very very helpful. |
19:03 | Oxbridge Mint | http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bridge |
19:04 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Yes, ofc, Dean D. |
19:04 | Oxbridge Mint | As for the other question: 2) alt-option click 'focus on a billboard, but then how do I do the vernier tuning so that the sign isn't just slightly askew? |
19:04 | Oxbridge Mint | I haven't the slightest idea what "vernier tuning" is. Does sound quite steampunk, though. |
19:04 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | fine-tuning. |
19:05 | Martini Discovolante | it is also highly recommended that you bookmark their website,a dn keep up with announcements there. |
19:05 | dragonwarrio | I don,t you help |
19:05 | Marion Questi | I suggest you release camera controls...then you have complete control over your camera position. |
19:05 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | When I focus in on a billboard, the signs are askew. The best way to walk thru the Oxbridge Halls is to bump past them. |
19:05 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Remind me to make a video. |
19:05 | Oxbridge Mint | Do you mean the signs are blurry? Or at a strange angle? |
19:05 | Oxbridge Mint | If they are blurry, it means they have not completely loaded yet. |
19:06 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | No the billboards are at an angle. This really is at NCI, at the moment where I am doing a compare and contrat. |
19:06 | Oxbridge Mint | There is nothing you can do but wait. It used to be that right clicking and selecting a texture would make it load faster, but it doesn't seem to work anymore. |
19:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There are multiple camera controls.... On the PC, the involve ctrl and shift, so that you can zoom, pan, and rotate. |
19:06 | Oxbridge Mint | It is not my fault then. They've totally hosed up NCI's tutorials since I left! |
19:06 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | ty, Dean J. I do that. |
19:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The Mac equivalents are posted in the entrance to the cathedral. |
19:07 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Mac's have no mousewheel, lol. |
19:07 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No magic. |
19:07 | Martini Discovolante | we cannot answer anythign about NCI. |
19:07 | Marion Questi | Mac's have had a mouse wheel for years...:) |
19:07 | Oxbridge Mint bites tongue
19:07 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Not included on my macbook... |
19:08 | Josain Zsun | Macs hav mousewheels and trackballs. |
19:08 | Oxbridge Mint | As to how to use the camera controls have you tried the tutorial in our second building "College of Camera Control"? |
19:08 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | oh, you mean the squirrel cage inside that powers the whole thing. |
19:08 | Oxbridge Mint | But, not, as he pointed out, Mac Laptops |
19:08 | Oxbridge Mint | Or PC Laptops for that matter. |
19:08 | Oxbridge Mint | Not unless you buy one and plug it in. |
19:08 | Martini Discovolante | well we cannot address every hardware configuration either. |
19:09 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Will have to reread the Hall of Cameras... |
19:09 | Martini Discovolante | you are on your own there. |
19:09 | ArcasArendal | two fingers on the trackpad should work like a mouse wheel |
19:09 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | ty |
19:09 | Marion Questi | I can't imagine running SL without a mouse...or a SpaceNavigator for that matter... |
19:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | In general, alt-shift-lmb lets you pan, so you can center your view goal. |
19:10 | Oxbridge Mint | Well, we could address it, but we would probably be wrong, since there are so many and we each have only one :) |
19:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | then you can rotate that better. |
19:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | alt-ctrl-lmb for rotate, I believe. |
19:11 | Wendyslippers Charisma | 3d navigator mushroom controller is sooo kewl... |
19:11 | Marion Questi | Mr. Dav2, I think one of the tutors can help you better after the meeting. Let us move along. Next question? |
19:11 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | listens to the criickets. |
19:11 | Wendyslippers Charisma raises her hand slowly and wiggles her fingers
19:12 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | passes the gavel |
19:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Prof Wendy? |
19:12 | Marion Questi | Yes Prof Charisma? |
19:12 | Wendyslippers Charisma | Deans, Distinguished guests. Tonight I taught my Roleplay class, and was very ably assisted by Mister MichaelNeff Macbeth, and some Evil Sociopath, who shall remain nameless pending her upcoming trial. During the class they gave insights, clear experience, and witty examples, playing along. *clears her throat nervously* They showed in the opinion of this humble clockwork person, the characteristics of caring for others, a desire for benevolence and bettering themselves and their surroundings, and the technical abilities worthy of faculty of Oxbridge University, and,, |
19:13 | Wendyslippers Charisma | and I request the Staff consider them highly for tenured teaching positions... thank you. |
19:13 | Oxbridge Mint | Off with their heads! |
19:13 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | We love you too, Prof. Charisma |
19:13 | Marion Questi | Teaching positions for what class? Your class? |
19:13 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | and thanks for the class. I noted the change. |
19:13 | Oxbridge Mint | I think that's something you and they should talk to Wordsmith about. He's in charge of all the classes? |
19:13 | Martini Discovolante | heh-- never hold a meeting right after Game of Thrones :P |
19:14 | Wendyslippers Charisma | Truly the roleplay class, but they both seem very able to teach, and they listen. |
19:14 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Nods. And also depends if the have something they wish to teach. |
19:14 | Marion Questi is confused. "Are you tendering your resignation?"
19:15 | Wendyslippers Charisma | um,, it is not my wish to,, no? |
19:15 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I think she is just recommending them then. |
19:15 | Oxbridge Mint | She's recommending that Wordsmith work with them to find a class they would be good at, right? |
19:15 | Wendyslippers Charisma | um,, yes! |
19:15 | Wendyslippers Charisma | yes exactly! |
19:15 | Wendyslippers Charisma | *smiles smugly* |
19:15 | Marion Questi | Ah...very well. |
19:15 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And that is useful, in that is part of what I need to know if someone IS to teach. |
19:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Without kindness a a desire to help others ... it's not going to happen. |
19:16 | ArcasArendal | is this a teacher meeting? |
19:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No, an open meeting on Oxbridge. |
19:17 | Oxbridge Mint | That was just a question relating to teaching here. |
19:17 | ArcasArendal | ah, I see. |
19:17 | Oxbridge Mint | Next question? |
19:18 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Caledon Oxbridge (240,148,28) |
19:18 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | Wish it would work... |
19:20 | Oxbridge Mint | Who has the next question? |
19:20 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The main parcel has a landing point, dav2. Any TP into the parcel will locate there. |
19:21 | Automated Attendance System | Thank you for attending the Class: Intro to Role Playing at Caledon Oxbridge. We value your feedback! Please take a moment to complete the anonymous questionaire at: http://bit.ly/9UIm4A |
19:21 | Kerhop Seattle | speaking of role playing I just got a survey request for that class out of the blue |
19:22 | Oxbridge Mint | I got it too. That was probably meant to go off during that class. |
19:22 | Martini Discovolante | somethign is funky in Denmark, Kerhop! |
19:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | As did I. But just before this, I was logged off and coming back in the sim seemed to have backed up. |
19:22 | Marion Questi | It seems there is something odd going on with the attendance system.. I'll check into it. |
19:23 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | This was just before the 7pm. Miss Wendy's class material was back out and my chair had disappeared. |
19:24 | Automated Attendance System whispers | ClassAttendance 0.10 Initializing...Please wait. |
19:24 | MichaelNeff Macbeth | hm. Sounds like TheMatrix. |
19:24 | Automated Attendance System whispers | Initialization succeeded. The attendance system is now operational. |
19:24 | Automated Attendance System whispers | 19 class records found. |
19:24 | Automated Attendance System whispers | 33916 KiB of free memory available for allocation. |
19:24 | Automated Attendance System | GroupMan Pro activated for bot 59242a86-88da-471c-aab3-326f71af71bb |
19:25 | Marion Questi | SL IS the matrix...:) |
19:25 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
19:25 | Larkylouz | I got bumped about 6:45; assumed it was my computer being flaky, but... |
19:25 | Marion Questi | Anyone? |
19:25 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And sometimes does have time discontinuities. |
19:25 | Oxbridge Mint | And lag is our bullet time. |
19:25 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No, Miss Larky. I think it was the sim. |
19:26 | Josain Zsun | Sim ws full then also. |
19:27 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Another question? |
19:27 | Kerhop Seattle | with the sim being a homestead, any plans of moving classes to a neighboring sim so it isn't full as often? |
19:27 | Marion Questi | I wish our class attendance was high enough to warrant that...:) |
19:27 | Larkylouz | It acted like a full sim, 'tis true. |
19:27 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No. That would require paying for those resources. |
19:28 | Martini Discovolante | we would have to own the land |
19:28 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The reason Oxbridge is a homestead is the cost differential between a homestead and full sim. |
19:28 | Marion Questi | This class is by far the best attended; most have only a few students. So a full sim is rarely a problem |
19:29 | Kerhop Seattle | sounds like a chicken/egg question, is class attendance low because sim is full or is the sim full because of class attendance? :) |
19:29 | Marion Questi | We actually monitor the avatar population constantly and only rarely have a full sim issue. |
19:29 | Martini Discovolante | and we rarely have of full sim of people with actual business here. |
19:29 | Kerhop Seattle | ok |
19:29 | Oxbridge Mint | No. It's definitely egg first :) |
19:30 | Oxbridge Mint | Speaking of classes, if you ever get the urge to teach again, Kerhop... |
19:30 | Marion Questi | I plot the time spent at the limit every week...last week it was zero. The week before it was 22 minutes ..for the whole week. |
19:30 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Meaning, that we do at times have to have those just hanging about move next door. |
19:30 | dav2 -j- (dav2j) | If anyone is willing to copypaste to me the contents of this Dean's Q&A, then I don't have to be here in the, er, flesh, so to speak. |
19:31 | Josain Zsun | I'll do that 2x |
19:32 | Kerhop Seattle | that'd be interesting, to have a transcript of these or perhaps a FAQ on a website/notecard available |
19:33 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | nods... |
19:33 | Oxbridge Mint | That's a good idea. |
19:33 | Marion Questi | Hmm...I'm not sure we get any FAQs...seems to be different every week. |
19:34 | Larkylouz | I keep all the chat logs. I might could volunteer to create a notecard if someone can do the scripting to put it up somewhere. |
19:34 | Larkylouz | I think perhaps a disclaimer at the beginning of the Q&A, that it will be published, might be a good idea. |
19:35 | Oxbridge Mint | The scripting is easy. We could use another of the Kiosk.net systems that we use for the schedules. |
19:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There's a chat-log processor. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Content_Creation/Mesh_Import_User_Group |
19:35 | Marion Questi | Just be contrary...I'm not sure putting up a chat log is such a good idea. I think we ought to encourage attendance "in the flesh" so to speak...:) |
19:35 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Not that link. this one. http://www.dgp4sl.com/wikify.php5 |
19:36 | Oxbridge Mint | I was thinking more of the most common questions updated into a FAQ. |
19:36 | Josain Zsun | Log analysis over time, would probably yield valid data. |
19:37 | Oxbridge Mint | On the other hand, it would make this more work. A lot more. |
19:38 | Josain Zsun | Boiled down would probably only be a couple of points per meeting...but would require some editing. |
19:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Nods. |
19:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Worth considering. |
19:39 | Marion Questi | I once asked the Guv why he didn't have a web site with a BB where people could discuss things and interact online. His reply was that time spent on a website was time NOT spent in-world...:) |
19:39 | Martini Discovolante | and heaven knows, trying to keep after it as things change woudl be quite the job. |
19:39 | Oxbridge Mint | Then again, he also has a Caledon Minecraft server :) |
19:39 | Marion Questi laughs.
19:39 | Marion Questi | Yes he does. |
19:39 | Martini Discovolante | i am still finding bits and pieces that have not caught up to the homestead change |
19:40 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The directory on the east side, Dean D? |
19:41 | Oxbridge Mint | SL changes so much it's hard to keep anything up to date. |
19:41 | Marion Questi | Let us move along... |
19:41 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
19:44 | Marion Questi | Anyone at all? |
19:45 | Oxbridge Mint | If there are no more questions, we can break early, I guess? |
19:45 | Josain Zsun | Soo....How 'bout them Mets, eh? |
19:45 | Oxbridge Mint | I don't follow football, sorry. |
19:45 | Josain Zsun | A phrase I use whe there are long pauses. |
19:45 | Larkylouz giggles.
19:45 | Martini Discovolante | the opera or the art museum? |
19:45 | allison2489 | . . . |
19:46 | allison2489 | museums are fun :) |
19:46 | allison2489 | opera's loud |
19:46 | Oxbridge Mint | I used to have a museum of SL art (when I had disposable income) in Caledon. I thought about calling it the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but I was afraid people might take it seriously. |
19:46 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Or the rhythm of a metronome or yet other metric? ;) |
19:47 | Martini Discovolante | HOw abotu the Metropolitan Museum of Fancy Pictures? |
19:48 | Oxbridge Mint | I miss my museum, but it was 40US a month :( |
19:48 | allison2489 | O.O |
19:49 | Martini Discovolante | ergh. |
19:50 | Gronk Seriman | Any news on the Server Side Baking or the Materials fronts? |
19:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I haven't had a chance to look in the last week. |
19:51 | Oxbridge Mint | I can only suggest following the LL blog. |
19:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The main viewer hasn't had an update, however. |
19:51 | Gronk Seriman | I know the newest Firestorm version is supposedly ready. |
19:52 | Gronk Seriman | ...for SSB. |
19:52 | Larkylouz raises her hand.
19:53 | Marion Questi | Yes, Miss Louz? |
19:53 | Larkylouz | I have been looking and looking for a website I saw once, that told which video driver was best for SL. Haven't been able to find it again. LL viewer. |
19:53 | Larkylouz | Apparently, newest is not always best. |
19:54 | Oxbridge Mint | True. I've messed up my computer several times by downloading the video driver updates. |
19:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | When there's a problem, it generally shows up in forums, as happened with the "everything pink" problem. |
19:55 | Marion Questi | This is a year old list of video cards. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/What-video-card-do-I-need-for-SL/m-p/1546603/highlight/true#M14539 |
19:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I'll see what I can find on drivers. |
19:56 | Niki Listern | I am sorry I have to leave My daughter wants to play dolls with me |
19:56 | Oxbridge Mint | I missed the everything pink. |
19:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | But, such ilsts go rapidly out of date. |
19:56 | Oxbridge Mint | Good night Niki |
19:57 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Night, Miss Niki. |
19:57 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Here Carl. Pink or purple: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Controls/Everything-is-pink-and-purple/qaq-p/1746925 |
19:57 | Larkylouz | Thank you, Deans. I will check out said list. |
19:57 | Larkylouz | There is also a notecard on the pink issue in the latest COU faculty kit. |
19:58 | Oxbridge Mint | Thank you. |
19:58 | Martini Discovolante | the pink business os rare these days.. but we still get one once in awhile |
19:58 | Oxbridge Mint | That's a new one on me. |
19:58 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That one affected my laptop, before I updated the driver. But that is a months old problem. |
19:58 | Larkylouz | I've never seen it. |
19:58 | Martini Discovolante | plus.. it is the type of glitch that seems to crop up eveer so often |
19:59 | Martini Discovolante | liek the static skin, business |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | LL updates the viewer and some video card / driver combinations have a problem. |
20:01 | Marion Questi | Time flies, when you're having fun! It is 8:00 o'clock and we are out of time. |
20:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There was also a work around via debug settings. |
20:01 | Marion Questi | Thank you all for coming! |
20:01 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you, Deans! |
20:01 | MichaelNeff Macbeth | Thank You. |
20:01 | Oxbridge Mint | Thank you |
20:01 | Larkylouz | Thank you Deans. |
20:02 | allison2489 | thank you deans |
