18:47 |
Marion Questi |
You are invited to join us. |
18:48 |
Red Quixote |
they are usually very informative |
18:48 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and / or entertaining. |
18:48 |
Red Quixote |
depending on the questions,.. of course ;D |
18:49 |
Red Quixote |
hello Miss Gronk |
18:49 |
gamelyn555 |
sounds every good. I will stay. There are no good documentaries on t.v. |
18:49 |
Marion Questi |
Evening Miss Seriman. |
18:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Greetings, Miss Gronk. |
18:49 |
Gronk Seriman |
Good evening, Red, Deans, everybody! |
18:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
/me Thinks of a ballet gesture for "you, and you, and all of you". |
18:51 |
Gronk Seriman |
heehee |
18:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
/me Leaps for the chair. |
18:51 |
Red Quixote |
I was going to promise not to ask any questions about the pope defecating in arboreal regions |
18:55 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Good eve, Miss Wendy. |
18:55 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
very! |
18:55 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
thank you,, |
18:55 |
Marion Questi |
Welcome back, Professor Charisma...:) |
18:57 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
Thank yoU! Good Evening to you both, Deans, is tonight "White" night? |
18:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Perhaps only by serendipity. |
18:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
and happenstance. |
18:58 |
Gronk Seriman |
Spring is in the air. Time for the lighter colors again. |
18:58 |
Marion Questi |
Providence? |
18:58 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Quite possibly |
19:00 |
Marion Questi |
It is 7 o'clock. Let us begin. |
19:01 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
For we shall never be able to finish unless we begin. |
19:01 |
Marion Questi |
We are a couple of Deans short, but Dean Jarvinen and I shall brave the questions alone! |
19:01 |
Marion Questi |
This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. |
19:01 |
Marion Questi |
Who would like to throw out the first question for us? |
19:02 |
Red Quixote |
... what is the airspeed of an unladen swallow? |
19:03 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
European or African? ;) |
19:03 |
Larkylouz |
Why would anyone want to swallow nothingness? |
19:03 |
Red Quixote |
I don't know that |
19:03 |
Gronk Seriman |
/me expects red to be ejected. |
19:04 |
Red Quixote |
:P |
19:04 |
Red Quixote |
I ws only trying to break 'the ice' |
19:04 |
dav2j |
Where is card 6.0.2 in the College of Avatars? |
19:05 |
Larkylouz |
/me is frozen in wonderment at his daring and bravado. |
19:05 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's really not a matter of how a swallow would hold a coconut but of the mass to wingspan ratio. |
19:06 |
Marion Questi |
Exhibit 6.02 is right where you expect it to be, but it is unnumbered. |
19:06 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
And unencumbered. |
19:07 |
Marion Questi |
All the original cards were unlabeled. Only the updates show the numbers. |
19:07 |
dav2j |
ty. I will look again. |
19:07 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
Good evening, May I ask a question? |
19:07 |
Marion Questi |
Please do! |
19:07 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You may, of course. |
19:07 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
I never managed to thank you all, for making the student dorms, which now undortunately ar gone, and I understand the prim shortage and other needs which were mentioned. Our Sl is so filled with places wanting money for everything, the free places being supported by advertising, or adult sims with other motives, it was so nice to see us offer a place to those who need it, in a venue such as ours. My question then is, might we offer dorm buildings in Oxbridge Village some time, or something like that? |
19:08 |
Marion Questi |
It would be great if we could. |
19:08 |
Marion Questi |
Alas...the prim situation forbids it. |
19:09 |
Marion Questi |
I should be glad to find another solution. |
19:09 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If essentially would be a matter of Oxbridge renting parcels there. Or having a noble benefactor to do so. |
19:09 |
Josain Zsun |
/me notices the synchronized movements in the bleachers. |
19:10 |
Marion Questi |
I recall that for some time, Fogwoman Gray Volare offered free apartments in SSC. |
19:10 |
Marion Questi |
It was her way of trying to ease newcomers into SL...and to Caledon |
19:10 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Oxbridge is not using contributions, sponsorhships, and other fund-raising for both tier and instructor stipends. |
19:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Sorry. Now using.... |
19:11 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We are doing well, but have to be cautious about commitments. |
19:12 |
Marion Questi |
It would be wonderful if another private party could step into her place as the sort of welcome wagon. |
19:12 |
Marion Questi |
Oh...perhaps some of you don't know that she only rarely visits SL these days. |
19:13 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
ohh my, is she well? |
19:13 |
Marion Questi |
Quite well....just not in SL! |
19:14 |
Marion Questi |
Next question? |
19:14 |
dav2j |
I have forgotten, is I ever knew, how to see if people are in Chat range on the Standard Viewer. |
19:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Her disengagement from SL also cost Oxbridge what might be termed our history department. |
19:15 |
Marion Questi |
Very true. |
19:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You can open the people window and look at nearby. |
19:15 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
That can be set to a range of 20m, which is chat range. |
19:16 |
dav2j |
And is there a fast way to see if a .sim. is overloaded, before entering? |
19:16 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
You can tell how many avatars it contains on the map. |
19:16 |
Marion Questi |
Open the big map...not the minimap...and mouse over a sim....a popup with tell you how many avatars it contains. |
19:17 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But that's only part of the story. |
19:17 |
dav2j |
Can I bookmark, or landmark, that part of the map? |
19:17 |
Marion Questi |
Right..it won't tell you the capacity of the sim. |
19:18 |
Marion Questi |
To make a LM you must actually be on the spot. |
19:18 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
If you have a landmark, you can search that up or go to the LM and then the map. |
19:18 |
dav2j |
Ah, ty. |
19:18 |
Marion Questi |
Next question? |
19:19 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The map has a "my landmarks" pulldown. |
19:20 |
dav2j |
Wow. Looking at in now. |
19:20 |
dav2j |
Wasn't covered in the Red Arrow walking Tutorial, iic. |
19:20 |
dav2j |
iirc |
19:20 |
dav2j |
thanks, again. |
19:20 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
From inventory, you can go to the LM, right click, select 'about landmark' and then 'map' |
19:21 |
Marion Questi |
You're welcome. |
19:21 |
Marion Questi |
Next question? |
19:21 |
Gronk Seriman |
I have an observation...I have not visited the ending point of the Tutorial for quite a while. But I have had some new people approach and ask "Now what do I do? How can I leave here?" |
19:22 |
Marion Questi |
I'm sure that does happen..:) |
19:22 |
Gronk Seriman |
Isn't there a big signboard of places to go there? |
19:22 |
Marion Questi |
But only when people don't read the exhibits! |
19:22 |
dav2j |
I have seen the signboards, excuse me but they |
19:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
The viewer itself now has a destination guide. |
19:23 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
As well as the signboards at the end. |
19:23 |
dav2j |
look like advertising billboards! And I haven't done anything than pick |
19:23 |
dav2j |
up a notecard. |
19:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
/me Thinks of the old stargate system.... |
19:24 |
Josain Zsun |
Maybe they could become proximity givers instead of waiting for a reader to click on them? |
19:24 |
Gronk Seriman |
That could be annoying. |
19:24 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. A little of that goes a long way. |
19:25 |
Gronk Seriman |
...and confusing to a new person. |
19:25 |
Josain Zsun |
I just give out the same notecards I got from the boards. |
19:25 |
Larkylouz |
Yes. IMNSHO, knowing how to read a notecard is a pretty basic skill in SL. |
19:25 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
But we often have a solution here .... live tutors to help. |
19:25 |
dav2j |
Wasn't to me, lol. |
19:26 |
dav2j |
The best thing I have found is Prof. Brentano's class on where to go next. |
19:26 |
Gronk Seriman |
It's just an observation I threw out. Some things never change...some people just don't GET SL. |
19:26 |
Marion Questi |
Good point. |
19:26 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. WE recently changed that from 10pm to 9pm, btw. |
19:27 |
dav2j |
I am looking at that now. Usually I get called away just before time to come here., hence I 'Park" |
19:28 |
Marion Questi |
The tutorial is not going to make anyone an expert. People will have to try things for themselves. |
19:28 |
dav2j |
Thank you Deans for being here, I have many questions. |
19:29 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
We have many answers ... some even match the questions. |
19:29 |
dav2j |
(There's always the follow question.) |
19:29 |
dav2j |
I am a troll - I do annoy people. |
19:30 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Dav, I'm glad you did not say "I am a troll - everything I say is false.". |
19:30 |
dav2j |
No, that was Spock |
19:31 |
dav2j |
Mudd's Women... |
19:31 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Dates much further back. |
19:32 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epimenides_paradox |
19:33 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Another question? |
19:34 |
dav2j |
Zoom isn't working well for me, either, I have to crab-walk - use the move the then the orbit, alternately. |
19:34 |
dav2j |
I just saw the class map outside, then can't zoom in past the last row of seats |
19:34 |
dav2j |
here in the Lecture Hall. |
19:34 |
dav2j |
Not sure what setting I monkeyed with... |
19:35 |
Josain Zsun |
You might need to disable viewer constraints |
19:35 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It does depend on draw distance, and if you have limit select distance set in preferences. |
19:35 |
Marion Questi |
Advanced > Disable Camera Constraints. |
19:37 |
gamelyn555 |
Limit select distance what is that for and is part of the last question |
19:37 |
dav2j |
Where is Draw Distance? (esp. in Phoenix Viewer) |
19:38 |
Marion Questi |
Select Distance refers to when you select an object for edit. |
19:38 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes. It limits the distance at which you can select objects, which can avoid unanticipated moving or deleting when you are building. |
19:38 |
Marion Questi |
Some times when you are building, you want to ignore stuff in the background when you click and drag a selection box. |
19:39 |
gamelyn555 |
ok |
19:39 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
I believe in Phoenix if you type in local, dd 128 it will set the draw distance to whatever integer you used? |
19:40 |
Gronk Seriman |
It should be in the Graphics tab of your Preferences. You may have to enable Advanced to make it appear. |
19:40 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
It's also in the advanced menu |
19:41 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
I have it in preferences under Move/View/Display. |
19:43 |
Gronk Seriman |
I hate to say it, but Phoenix is done for. Time to move on to Firestorm. |
19:45 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, it apparently has risen from the ashes for the last time. |
19:46 |
Gronk Seriman |
I still have SL V1.2.3 installed. It like to go back to it once in a while. |
19:46 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
SL code has moved onward: media on a prim (to be used for the new Caledon movie house), mesh, and server-side avatar baking. |
19:47 |
Gronk Seriman |
What is all that about server-side baking? I've heard agout it. |
19:48 |
Gronk Seriman |
about |
19:48 |
gamelyn555 |
Will residenyes i have question also |
19:49 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Basically, moving the avatar baking onto the sim software rather than the viewer software to gain more uniformity of appearance. |
19:49 |
Marion Questi |
Did you have a question Miss Gamelyn? |
19:49 |
gamelyn555 |
yes |
19:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
On the SS baking: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Project_Sunshine-Server_Side_Appearance |
19:50 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you! |
19:50 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Go ahead, Miss Gamelyn. |
19:50 |
gamelyn555 |
during the changes that will take place, will residents be able to log on |
19:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Yes, subject to normal SL borking |
19:51 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
They place the capability in the viewers before turning it on, and don't immediately turn off the old capability. |
19:51 |
Marion Questi |
Oh yes of course. The updates are posted to the servers and are usually invisible to us unless there is a glitch and a rollback...:) |
19:52 |
gamelyn555 |
ok |
19:52 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Look at forwards and backwards capability on the link I gave above. |
19:55 |
Marion Questi |
Our time is drawing to a close, ladies and gentlemen. Time for one or two more questions. Anyone? |
19:55 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
*holds up hand* |
19:56 |
Marion Questi |
Yes ma'am? |
19:56 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Miss Wendy? |
19:56 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
11 meters per Second, Sirs. |
19:56 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
Just,,, thoguht you should know. |
19:56 |
Red Quixote |
that should have been expressed in 'knots' |
19:56 |
Marion Questi |
I am now enlightened....:) |
19:56 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
http://style.org/unladenswallow/ |
19:56 |
Marion Questi |
May I quote you Professor Charisma? |
19:57 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
definnitely! |
19:57 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
(smiles) |
19:58 |
Wendyslippers Charisma |
You have to know these things, if you 're goingto be Dean,,, |
19:58 |
Red Quixote |
;D |
19:58 |
Marion Questi |
Alas, I am ignorant of so many many things...:) |
19:58 |
Marion Questi |
Probably unfit for my position. |
19:59 |
Marion Questi |
One last question? |
19:59 |
Marion Questi |
Anyone? |
20:00 |
Red Quixote |
I'm out of joke questions :P |
20:00 |
Marion Questi |
Then we are adjourned! |
20:00 |
Marion Questi |
Thank you all for coming. |
20:00 |
Larkylouz |
Thank you, Deans. |
20:00 |
gamelyn555 |
Thank you for your time |
20:00 |
Wordsmith Jarvinen |
Thank you all. |
20:00 |
Gronk Seriman |
Thank you, Deans!
|
