Caledon Oxbridge Q&A for 2013-01-20
19:00 | Marion Questi | Good evening everyone! Thank you for coming. |
19:00 | Marion Questi | This is an "open mic" Q&A which we hold at this time every week. We, the Deans of Oxbridge, assemble to answer questions from the attendees about Oxbridge, it's mission and operation, or about SL in general. |
19:01 | Marion Questi | Is there a brave soul who will ask the first question? |
19:02 | Larkylouz | As the snow is melting, do please be gentle with me. Please, Deans, how do I adjust my Preferences so I don't think I'm going about half bald all the time? |
19:02 | dav2 (dav2b) | shouts: OK if I am in the observation balcony? |
19:02 | dav2 (dav2b) | Sorry, Deans. |
19:03 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | /me shrugs.... |
19:03 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Well, transitions can have delayed rezzing. |
19:03 | Martini Discovolante | i dunno Miss Louz |
19:03 | Gronk Seriman | Doesn't CTRL+ALT+R help? |
19:03 | Ravini T. Mephisto (thaumaturgist) | Elaborate on "half bald?" |
19:04 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Such as when TPing between sims. |
19:04 | Martini Discovolante | your hair seems to be all prims. |
19:04 | Larkylouz | Moving Objects to the medium setting seems to have done it. |
19:04 | Larkylouz | Yes, Dean, it is hair from the library. |
19:05 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | "Soon" LL will be shifting over to server-based baking. |
19:05 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Which hopefully will help with some of the vagaries of appearance. |
19:05 | Larkylouz | I was mostly poking fun; no need to spend a lot of time on this one. |
19:05 | Larkylouz | /me smiles |
19:05 | Marion Questi | Moving right along then.... |
19:06 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
19:06 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | However, it used to be that a teleport would shift hair attachment to the bustle. |
19:06 | Larkylouz | LOL. Bustles are my bane as it is! |
19:07 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | I have only been here a few days. How do I control movements like waving, smiling, bowing, etc.... |
19:07 | Marion Questi | These are called Gestures in SL... |
19:08 | Marion Questi | And there a a number of them built in. |
19:08 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Those are actually animations, which can be triggered as a gesture (which can be both animation and text) |
19:08 | Marion Questi | There should be a Gesture button on your screen |
19:09 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It has an icon like a waving hand. |
19:09 | Marion Questi | If it is not visible....right click on any button and select "Toolbar buttons..." |
19:09 | Marion Questi | Then drag the Gesture button to the side of your screen |
19:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Gestures can also have text triggers |
19:10 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Which are shown, if present, under the column headed with 'chat' |
19:11 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That's a column when the gesture window is opened by clicking on the gesture button. |
19:11 | Marion Questi | There are also a number of Gestures stored in the Library of your Inventory. These can be added to the Gesture menu. |
19:12 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | (floating yoga) |
19:12 | Marion Questi | Or they can be activated simply by a double click. |
19:13 | Marion Questi | Have we thrown enough at you for the present, Miss St Andrews? |
19:14 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | This has been very helplful. I thank you |
19:14 | Marion Questi | You're quite welcome. |
19:14 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
19:14 | kat (ekaterin) | Another hair question. If you look at the top of my head, you will see that there is prim hair sticking out the top of my hat. Is there a way to fix that using an invisiprim or some such trick? |
19:14 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | I will practice |
19:15 | Marion Questi | That is a persistent problem, Miss Kat. |
19:15 | Marion Questi | The solution most of us choose is to have customized hair prim for each hat. |
19:15 | kat (ekaterin) | :( OK. |
19:16 | Martini Discovolante | if your hat and hair are both COPIABLE-- go to a sand box, rezz them both |
19:16 | Gronk Seriman | ...or you can try to simply reposition the hat. |
19:16 | Marion Questi | Make a copy of your hair, and tweek it just enough so it doesn't poke through the hat. |
19:16 | Martini Discovolante | place together |
19:16 | Martini Discovolante | and edit out the offending hair. |
19:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Hair involves flexi-prims, and the flexi part isn't aware of anything else, so it floats through things. |
19:16 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Or tweak the hat. |
19:16 | Martini Discovolante | add a cnetering prim, adn link it all, centering prim LAST so it becomes the root prim |
19:17 | Marion Questi | The lesson, of course, is never buy hair that is not both copyable and modable. |
19:17 | Martini Discovolante | most good hair is copy mod |
19:18 | Martini Discovolante | but it is SL. peopel are used to it.. no one will think any the less for it |
19:18 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And that which isn't often results in a bad hair day. |
19:18 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Good eve, Miss Beth. Welcome. |
19:19 | Marion Questi | Next question, anyone? |
19:19 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | I have an SL culture question. A lot of estate sims change their ground texture during December and January to display snow. Are there any estates that you know of that have Southern Hemisphere seasons with snow in August or thereabouts? |
19:19 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | or if there ever were? |
19:20 | Martini Discovolante | therew are or were loads of Aussie sims |
19:20 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There's a mainland section that's in eternal snow, I believe. |
19:20 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Yes I know |
19:20 | Martini Discovolante | nad yus, the always snowy mainland sims. |
19:20 | Martini Discovolante | i was born on one :) |
19:20 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | But afaik none of the mainland sims have changing seasons |
19:21 | Marion Questi | I haven't any knowledge of what the other private estates do...but I would look for some Aussie sims. |
19:21 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Have you ever heard of an estate sim that did have changing seasons but that followed the weather in Argentina or something? |
19:21 | Rubi (rubicon.seetan) | im aussie |
19:21 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | That's a good idea |
19:21 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | I'd imagine an estate with a NZ or Oz theme would be a good bet for that. |
19:21 | Marion Questi | Although I'm not sure there is in fact any snow in Australia...:) |
19:22 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There is in NZ |
19:22 | Marion Questi | Yes...the Kiwis have snow. |
19:22 | Martini Discovolante | there used to be several Aussie sims. adn i bet they had an NZed ski slope or two! |
19:22 | Martini Discovolante | i would use your search :) |
19:22 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | thanks |
19:23 | Marion Questi | Next question? |
19:27 | Marion Questi | Anyone? |
19:27 | Marion Questi | You can ask pretty much anything, you know....:) I don't think we have ever refused to answer a question.... |
19:28 | kat (ekaterin) | What current or former SL designer do you most admire |
19:29 | Marion Questi | When I was a young avatar I was much enamored of Dame Ordinal Malaprop...:) |
19:29 | Martini Discovolante | oh -- i admire out Guv, for his vision adn exepdition in large builds.. adn CUtea Benelli for her detail in the very smallest of things : |
19:30 | Marion Questi | I also hold Miss Robin Sojourner in high esteem. |
19:30 | Martini Discovolante | oh yes! |
19:31 | Martini Discovolante | her skil and precision is non-pareil |
19:31 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Eloh Eliot for her work and sharing re skins. |
19:31 | Jessi StarBrite (crow.darkbyrd) | hel |
19:31 | Jessi StarBrite (crow.darkbyrd) | Hello* |
19:31 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Welcome ;) |
19:32 | Martini Discovolante | and superior name! :P |
19:32 | Marion Questi | Hello Miss Starbrite. Do take a seat...:) |
19:32 | Jessi StarBrite (crow.darkbyrd) | Alas, I cannot , I am on mobile you see. |
19:33 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Ahh. That does limit mobility, ironically. |
19:33 | Jessi StarBrite (crow.darkbyrd) | Haha indeed it does |
19:33 | Martini Discovolante | oh and toady nakamura and Flea Bussey, for their prodigious output , innovation and nurturing of other designers |
19:34 | Marion Questi | And it goes without saying that our own Dean Discovolante certainly ranks among the most accomplished. |
19:35 | Martini Discovolante | not at all, Dean Q |
19:36 | Marion Questi | Does that give you enough to work on Miss Kat? |
19:37 | kat (ekaterin) | Yes. |
19:37 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Or more specific categories? |
19:37 | kat (ekaterin) | /me has compiled a list. |
19:38 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There are also the design houses, such as BlakOpal or Bare@Rose |
19:39 | Martini Discovolante | houses? |
19:39 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Having multiple designers. |
19:39 | Martini Discovolante | oh. |
19:39 | Martini Discovolante | i did not know BlakOpal had more than her... but that plae has lovely things |
19:41 | Martini Discovolante | as does To-A-T, in vic city, and the designers in the Village.. Teaa Demina, adn astrof-- i fforget-- NW corner of Caledon Oxbridge village! i am poor at names |
19:41 | Marion Questi | I think her partner TiloByte Zanzabar. does a lot of the designing too. |
19:41 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Unfortunately, some amazing building designs have been lost. |
19:41 | Martini Discovolante | oh no doubt! |
19:42 | Martini Discovolante | Bare Rose is very reasonable ,adn can outfit to any genre! |
19:42 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Trilobyte |
19:42 | Marion Questi | Who has another question for us? |
19:43 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | What are the rules to purchasing property? |
19:44 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | In Caledon or in general? |
19:44 | Marion Questi | That's a sufficiently complex question that we have a class on it, Miss St Andrews. |
19:44 | Marion Questi | Friday at 5 pm. |
19:44 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | In Caledon |
19:44 | Martini Discovolante | you can choose Mainland-- where the Linden Lab is your landlord, or an estate liek Caledon, where one pays a private party for the use of land |
19:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | In Caledon, one contacts Desmond Shang (aka the Guvnah). |
19:45 | Marion Questi | In Caledon, it's pretty straightforward. You find a parcel that is vacant and pay the meter...:) |
19:45 | Martini Discovolante | in Caledon, you shold send our Guv, Desomnd Shang, a notecard, stating how much land you would like, adn if you knowm where, |
19:45 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Desmond keeps some available parcels listed in his profile. |
19:46 | Marion Questi | You can also often find vacant parcels when you explore Caledon. The meter will say Available is purple letters. |
19:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | The essential rule is you pay your tier so that the Guvnah can make tier payments to Linden Labs for the sims of Caledon. |
19:47 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | May I ask, do you all reside in Caledon? |
19:47 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | All land is essentially rental and ultimately involves tier being paid to Linden Lab. |
19:48 | Marion Questi | We do indeed. |
19:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Aye. |
19:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No ban lines. No security orbs below 500m, so free movement. |
19:48 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | No neon malls. |
19:49 | Martini Discovolante | that is an important part of our culture here |
19:49 | Martini Discovolante | /me waves to Mr Bachman! |
19:49 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | I have visited a few other places, but Caledon, is by far the most lovely and friendly. The tutorials are really helping me. |
19:49 | Marion Questi | Welcome Mr Bachman. It's been a very long time...:) |
19:49 | Bastillion Bachman | /me quietly waves to Dean Discovolante. |
19:49 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Caledon as a whole is very social and supportive. |
19:50 | Bastillion Bachman | Indeed it has. :) Nice to see you, but I did not want to interrupt. |
19:50 | Marion Questi | Have we answered your question, Miss St Andrews? |
19:51 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | Yes, once again, I thank you |
19:51 | Larkylouz | If I may add to the previous discussion, I will comment that I had a conversation with Inga Wind re: my complaint that their beautiful clothes always included an alpha that made me have huge breasts and a tiny waist. They said that they are designing a new line with more reasonable dimensions. I believe I am in esteemed company, as they are also designing a line for men with beer bellies! |
19:51 | Bastillion Bachman | /me chuckles. |
19:51 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Caledon does have a Victorian steampunk theme, but no one will be shocked if you are found otherwise. We have those who travel to many different lands and times. |
19:52 | Bastillion Bachman | Ah, the wonders of Second Life cultures. :) |
19:53 | Bastillion Bachman | My own experience with Caledon is proof enough that do indeed welcome all. :) |
19:53 | Marion Questi | Perhaps we should clarify that Miss Louz once complained to us about clothing not fitting properly for those with more robust physiques....:) |
19:54 | Martini Discovolante | syatem clothing never will |
19:54 | Martini Discovolante | it ihas its limits |
19:54 | Martini Discovolante | those triangles only stretch so far. |
19:53 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And then distort. |
19:53 | Martini Discovolante | hey-i come here only because i CAN be 6' tall with an ass you can bounce quarters off of. |
19:53 | Ravini T. Mephisto (thaumaturgist) | /me aims a quarter and tosses |
19:53 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Much of Caledon is about a set of shared ideas and ideals rather than a strict system of thou shalt do this and thou shalt not do that. |
19:53 | Bastillion Bachman | It takes the talented artisans to create clothing that can be adjusted properly.. much like in RL, your tailor makes the adjustments of store bought items.. |
19:54 | Martini Discovolante | hip-check! |
19:54 | Martini Discovolante | our avatars are economized to the point of distortion at default |
19:54 | Marion Questi | Five minutes left in our hour. Time for another question of two. Anyone? |
19:54 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Caledonians generally love politeness, modesty, and good grammar and vocabulary. |
19:55 | Martini Discovolante | designers have counters with prim shoes, adn now mesh |
19:55 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | And wild creativity! |
19:55 | Bastillion Bachman | Indeed! |
19:55 | kat (ekaterin) | What are the prospects in the near term to have mesh that stays outside of flesh? |
19:55 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | Do residents have professions? |
19:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That's currently handled with an alpha layer. |
19:55 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It makes the part of you inside the mesh invisible. |
19:56 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Some have SL businesses that make real money, some have RP businesses that are just for fun. |
19:56 | Martini Discovolante | i keep hearing ad eformer is in the works. most lately from the Vicerienne |
19:56 | Martini Discovolante | a "deformer" |
19:56 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | There is a deformer project, but it moves at a glacial pace. |
19:56 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | How do you pick a profession? |
19:57 | Martini Discovolante | liek Rl, via your aptitudes, adn your patience :) |
19:57 | kat (ekaterin) | Do you mean a role-play profession? |
19:57 | Marion Questi | Professions here can be real or role play. |
19:57 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Part of the problem is the need for multiple reference avatars, because, again, you can only deform so far from a base with good results. |
19:57 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | Yes, role play |
19:57 | Martini Discovolante | (you will notice "typist" is not on MY list) |
19:57 | Larkylouz | LOL |
19:57 | Marion Questi | Some people are genuinely frofessional at buidling, or designing or texturing...or speculating in land. |
19:58 | Larkylouz | And some at helping others! |
19:58 | Larkylouz | /me has experienced that often here. |
19:58 | Very old leather fireside chair w 3 fireside, 4 normal sits | whispers: (⇞PgUp or ⇟ PgDn ) change your pose. Touch for menu. |
19:58 | Marion Questi | A role play profession is entirely up to you. It's whatever you can play convincingly...:) |
19:58 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | I visited one land where they were poets, artists, etc..... Does Caledon have those too? |
19:59 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | Yes |
19:59 | kat (ekaterin) | And mad scientists as well. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Welcome all to Caledon Oxbridge and our land. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | A place to learn for real within this conjured world of man. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Follow ye well the red arrows drawn upon the floor, |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | for they shall lead you on from door to door. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | That you might learn the skills and craft you need, |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | to move and see and dress and in this virtual world succeed. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | For Second Life is far more environment than an idle game |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Though there be pleasantries and fun here all the same. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Ask questions as you will and learn as suits your mood. |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | And hopefully our displays will give your thoughts some food. |
19:59 | Marion Questi | We certainly have at one time or another.. Caledon is coming up on it's 7th Birthday. Many people have come and gone... |
19:59 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | trots out a poem. |
20:00 | Martini Discovolante | and you cann swing a Catgirl without hitting a Time Lord. |
20:00 | Martini Discovolante | canna* |
20:00 | Marion Questi | I think we have reached the end of our time. |
20:00 | Martini Discovolante | if i add "my dear " to that is makes a lovely haiku |
20:01 | Marion Questi | Thank you all for coming! |
20:01 | Bastillion Bachman | /applaud |
20:01 | Bastillion Bachman | /clap |
20:01 | Larkylouz | Thank you, Deans. |
20:01 | Lalyssia Helina St. Andrews (lalyssia) | Thank you for taking this time to help |
20:01 | Gronk Seriman | Thank you, Deans! |
20:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | Thanks you all. |
20:01 | Hannah Bluemood Utherwurldly (hannah.bluemood) | thank you |
20:01 | Wordsmith Jarvinen | It would be lonely up here (and rather dull) w/o you. |
